We construct Eisenstein cocycles for arithmetic subgroups of GL_2 of imaginary quadratic fields valued in second K-groups of products of two CM elliptic curves. We use these to construct maps from the first homology groups of Bianchi spaces to corresponding second K-groups of ray class fields and to verify the Eisenstein property of these maps for prime-to-level Hecke operators.
Given a profinite group G of finite p-cohomological dimension and a pro-p quotient H of G by a closed normal subgroup N, we study the filtration on the Iwasawa cohomology of N by powers of the augmentation ideal in the group algebra of H. We show that the graded pieces are related to the cohomology of G via analogues of Bockstein maps for the powers of the augmentation ideal. For certain groups H, we relate the values of these generalized Bockstein maps to Massey products relative to a restricted class of defining systems depending on H. We apply our study to prove lower bounds on the p-ranks of class groups of certain nonabelian extensions of the rational numbers and to give a new proof of the vanishing of triple Massey products in Galois cohomology.
Several authors have studied homomorphisms from first homology groups of modular curves to the second K-group of a cyclotomic ring or a modular curve X. These maps send Manin symbols in the homology groups to Steinberg symbols of cyclotomic or Siegel units. We give a new construction of these maps and a direct proof of their Hecke equivariance, analogous to the construction of Siegel units using the universal elliptic curve. Our main tool is a 1-cocycle from GL_2(Z) to the second K-group of the function field of a suitable group scheme over X, from which the maps of interest arise by specialization.
We construct toroidal compactifications of the moduli spaces of Drinfeld $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$-modules of rank $d$ with level $N$ structure as moduli spaces of log Drinfeld modules of rank $d$ with level $N$ structure. The toroidal compactifications are log regular schemes associated to rational cone decompositions, and there are regular ones among them. To construct these toroidal compactifications, we blow up the Satake compactification of Pink and employ the theory of formal moduli and a process of iterated Tate uniformization.
Let F be a global field, and let S be a finite set of places of F containing all archimedean places. Consider the product X of the symmetric spaces and Bruhat-Tits buildings for PGL_d of the completions of F at archimedean and non-archimedean places in S, respectively. We construct compactifications of the quotient of X by S-arithmetic subgroups of PGL_d(F). The constructions make delicate use of reductive Borel-Serre spaces for archimedean places and polyhedral and seminorm compactifications at nonarchimedean places. We also briefly discuss a few potential applications of our compacifications.
We consider modifications of Manin symbols in first homology groups of modular curves with p-adic integer coefficients for an odd prime p. We show that these symbols generate homology in primitive eigenspaces for the action of diamond operators, with a certain condition on the eigenspace that can be removed on Eisenstein parts. We apply this to prove the integrality of maps taking compatible systems of Manin symbols to compatible systems of zeta elements. In the work of the first two authors on an Iwasawa-theoretic conjecture of the third author, these maps are constructed with certain bounded denominators. As a consequence, their main result on the conjecture was proven after inverting p, and the results of this paper allow one to remove this condition.
This survey paper is focused on a connection between the geometry of $\mathrm{GL}_d$ and the arithmetic of $\mathrm{GL}_{d-1}$ over global fields, for integers $d \ge 2$. For $d = 2$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, there is an explicit conjecture of the third author relating the geometry of modular curves and the arithmetic of cyclotomic fields, and it is proven in many instances by the work of the first two authors. The paper is divided into three parts: in the first, we explain the conjecture of the third author and the main result of the first two authors on it. In the second, we explain an analogous conjecture and result for $d = 2$ over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. In the third, we pose questions for general $d$ over the rationals, imaginary quadratic fields, and global function fields.
We consider certain Massey products in the cohomology of a Galois extension of fields with coefficients in p-power roots of unity. We prove formulas for these products both in general and in the special case that the Galois extension in question is the maximal extension of a number field unramified outside a set of primes S including those above p and any archimedean places. We then consider those Z_p-Kummer extensions L of the maximal p-cyclotomic extension K of a number field that are unramified outside S. We show that Massey products describe the structure of a certain "decomposition-free" quotient of a graded piece of the maximal unramified abelian pro-p extension of L in which all primes above those in S split completely, with the grading arising from the augmentation filtration on the group ring of the Galois group of L/K. We explicitly describe examples of the maximal unramified abelian pro-p extensions of unramified outside p Kummer extensions of the cyclotomic field of all p-power roots of unity, for irregular primes p.
We consider the family of CM-fields which are pro-p p-adic Lie extensions of number fields of dimension at least two, which contain the cyclotomic Z_p-extension, and which are ramified at only finitely many primes. We show that the Galois groups of the maximal unramified abelian pro-p extensions of these fields are not always pseudo-null as Iwasawa modules for the Iwasawa algebras of the given p-adic Lie groups. The proof uses Kida's formula for the growth of lambda-invariants in cyclotomic Z_p-extensions of CM-fields. In fact, we give a new proof of Kida's formula which includes a slight weakening of the usual assumption that mu is trivial. This proof uses certain exact sequences involving Iwasawa modules in procyclic extensions. These sequences are derived in an appendix by the second author.
