Exploring strange nucleon form factors on the lattice

We discuss techniques for evaluating sea quark contributions to hadronic form factors on the lattice and apply these to an exploratory calculation of the strange electromagnetic, axial, and scalar form factors of the nucleon. We employ the Wilson gauge and fermion actions on an anisotropic 24^3 x 64 lattice, probing a range of momentum transfer with Q^2 < 1 GeV^2. The strange electric and magnetic form factors, G_E^s(Q^2) and G_M^s(Q^2), are found to be small and consistent with zero within the statistics of our calculation. The lattice data favor a small negative value for the strange axial form factor G_A^s(Q^2) and exhibit a strong signal for the bare strange scalar matrix element _0. We discuss the unique systematic uncertainties affecting the latter quantity relative to the continuum, as well as prospects for improving future determinations with Wilson-like fermions.

Parallelizing the QUDA Library for Multi-GPU Calculations in Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics

Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are having a transformational effect on numerical lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD) calculations of importance in nuclear and particle physics. The QUDA library provides a package of mixed precision sparse matrix linear solvers for LQCD applications, supporting single GPUs based on NVIDIA's Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA). This library, interfaced to the QDP++/Chroma framework for LQCD calculations, is currently in production use on the "9g" cluster at the Jefferson Laboratory, enabling unprecedented price/performance for a range of problems in LQCD. Nevertheless, memory constraints on current GPU devices limit the problem sizes that can be tackled. In this contribution we describe the parallelization of the QUDA library onto multiple GPUs using MPI, including strategies for the overlapping of communication and computation. We report on both weak and strong scaling for up to 32 GPUs interconnected by InfiniBand, on which we sustain in excess of 4 Tflops.

The role of multigrid algorithms for LQCD

We report on the first successful QCD multigrid algorithm which demonstrates constant convergence rates independent of quark mass and lattice volume for the Wilson Dirac operator. The new ingredient is the adaptive method for constructing the near null space on which the coarse grid multigrid Dirac operator acts. In addition we speculate on future prospects for extending this algorithm to the Domain Wall and Staggered discretizations, its exceptional suitability for high performance GPU code and its potential impact on simulations at the physical pion mass.

Moebius Algorithm for Domain Wall and GapDW Fermions

The Möbius domain wall action \cite{Brower:2004xi} is a generalization of Shamir's action, which gives exactly the same overlap fermion lattice action as the separation ($L_s$) between the domain walls is taken to infinity. The performance advantages of the algorithm are presented for small ensembles of quenched, full QCD domain wall and Gap domain wall lattices \cite{Vranas:2006zk}. In particular, it is shown that at the larger lattice spacings relevant to current dynamical simulations Möbius fermions work well together with GapDWF, reducing $L_s$ by more than a factor of two. It is noted that there is a precise map between the domain wall and effective overlap action at finite quark mass including finite $L_s$ chiral violations so that the Ward-Takahashi identities for the axial and vector currents are exactly equivalent in the two formulations.

Strange quark content of the nucleon

We discuss the calculation of disconnected diagrams needed for determining the strange quark content of the nucleon on the lattice. We present results for the strange scalar form factor and the related parameter f_Ts, which enters into the cross-section for the scattering of dark matter off nuclei in supersymmetric extensions of the standard model. In addition, we present results for the strange contribution to the nucleon's axial and electromagnetic form factors. The calculations were performed with two dynamical flavors of Wilson fermions on a 24^3 x 64 anisotropic lattice with a_s = 3a_t = 0.11 fm and M_pi ~ 400 MeV.

Blasting through lattice calculations using CUDA

Modern graphics hardware is designed for highly parallel numerical tasks and provides significant cost and performance benefits. Graphics hardware vendors are now making available development tools to support general purpose high performance computing. Nvidia's CUDA platform, in particular, offers direct access to graphics hardware through a programming language similar to C. Using the CUDA platform we have implemented a Wilson-Dirac operator which runs at an effective 68 Gflops on the Tesla C870. The recently released GeForce GTX 280 runs this same code at 92 Gflops, and we expect further improvement pending code optimization.

Strange quark contribution to nucleon form factors

We discuss methods for the calculation of disconnected diagrams and their application to various form factors of the nucleon. In particular, we present preliminary results for the strange contribution to the scalar and axial form factors, calculated with N_f=2 dynamical flavors of Wilson fermions on an anisotropic lattice.

Diquark correlations in baryons on the lattice with overlap quarks

We evaluate baryon wave functions in both the Coulomb and Landau gauge in lattice QCD. These are constructed from quark propagators calculated with the overlap Dirac operator on quenched gauge configurations at beta = 6. By comparing baryon states that differ in their diquark content, we find evidence for enhanced correlation in the scalar diquark channel, as favored by quark models. We also summarize earlier results for diquark masses in the Landau gauge, casting them in a form more easily compared with subsequent studies.

Light hadron and diquark spectroscopy in quenched QCD with overlap quarks on a large lattice

A simulation of quenched QCD with the overlap Dirac operator has been completed using 100 Wilson gauge configurations at beta = 6 on an 18^3 x 64 lattice and at beta = 5.85 on a 14^3 x 48 lattice, both in Landau gauge. We present results for light meson and baryon masses, meson final state "wave functions," and other observables, as well as some details on the numerical techniques that were used. Our results indicate that scaling violations, if any, are small. We also present an analysis of diquark correlations using the quark propagators generated in our simulation.

K^0-\bar K^0 mixing beyond the standard model and CP-violating electroweak penguins in quenched QCD with exact chiral symmetry

We present results for the ΔS=2 matrix elements which are required to study neutral kaon mixing in the standard model (SM) and beyond (BSM). We also provide leading chiral order results for the matrix elements of the electroweak penguin operators which give the dominant ΔI=3/2 contribution to direct CP violation in K->ππdecays. Our calculations were performed with Neuberger fermions on two sets of quenched Wilson gauge configurations at inverse lattice spacings of approximately 2.2 GeV and 1.5 GeV. All renormalizations were implemented non-perturbatively in the RI/MOM scheme, where we accounted for sub-leading operator product expansion corrections and discretization errors. We find ratios of non-SM to SM matrix elements which are roughly twice as large as in the only other dedicated lattice study of these amplitudes. On the other hand, our results for the electroweak penguin matrix elements are in good agreement with two recent domain-wall fermion calculations. As a by-product of our study, we determine the strange quark mass. Our main results are summarized and discussed in Sec. VII. Within our statistics, we find no evidence for scaling violations.

Light hadron spectroscopy in quenched QCD with overlap fermions

A simulation of quenched QCD with the overlap Dirac operator has been carried out using 100 Wilson gauge configurations at beta = 6 on an 18^3 x 64 lattice and at beta = 5.85 on a 14^3 x 48 lattice. Here we present results for meson masses, meson final state "wave functions," decay constants, and other observables, as well as details on our algorithmic and data analysis techniques. We also summarize results for baryon masses and quark and diquark propagators in the Landau gauge.
