Generating functions for some series of characters of classical Lie groups

There exist a number of well known multiplicative generating functions for series of Schur functions. Amongst these are some related to the dual Cauchy identity whose expansion coefficients are rather simple, and in some cases periodic in parameters specifying the Schur functions. More recently similar identities have been found involving expansions in terms of characters of the symplectic group. Here these results are extended and generalised to all classical Lie groups. This is done through the derivation of explicit recurrence relations for the expansion coefficients based on the action of the Weyl groups of both the symplectic and orthogonal groups. Copious results are tabulated in the form of explicit values of the expansion coefficients as functions of highest weight parameters. An alternative approach is then based on dual pairs of symplectic and/or orthogonal groups. A byproduct of this approach is that expansions in terms of spin orthogonal group characters can always be recovered from non-spin cases.

Factorial supersymmetric skew Schur functions and ninth variation determinantal identities

The determinantal identities of Hamel and Goulden have recently been shown to apply to a tableau-based ninth variation of skew Schur functions. Here we extend this approach and its results to the analogous tableau-based ninth variation of supersymmetric skew Schur functions. These tableaux are built on entries taken from an alphabet of unprimed and primed numbers and that may be ordered in a myriad of different ways, each leading to a determinantal identity. At the level of the ninth variation the corresponding determinantal identities are all distinct but the original notion of supersymmetry is lost. It is shown that this can be remedied at the level of the sixth variation involving a doubly infinite sequence of factorial parameters. Moreover it is shown that the resulting factorial supersymmetric skew Schur functions are independent of the ordering of the unprimed and primed entries in the alphabet.

Determinantal and Pfaffian identities for ninth variation skew Schur functions and Q-functions

Recently Okada defined algebraically ninth variation skew Q-functions, in parallel to Macdonald's ninth variation skew Schur functions. Here we introduce a skew shifted tableaux definition of these ninth variation skew Q-functions, and prove by means of a non-intersecting lattice path model a Pfaffian outside decomposition result in the form of a ninth variation version of Hamel's Pfaffian outside decomposition identity. As corollaries to this we derive Pfaffian identities generalizing those of Josefiak-Pragacz, Nimmo, and most recently Okada. As a preamble to this we present a parallel development based on (unshifted) semistandard tableaux that leads to a ninth variation version of the outside decomposition determinantal identity of Hamel and Goulden. In this case the corollaries we offer include determinantal identities generalizing the Schur and skew Schur function identities of Jacobi-Trudi, Giambelli, Lascoux-Pragacz, Stembridge, and Okada.

Factorial characters of classical Lie groups and their combinatorial realisations

Just as the definition of factorial Schur functions as a ratio of determinants allows one to show that they satisfy a Jacobi-Trudi-type identity and have an explicit combinatorial realisation in terms of semistandard tableaux, so we offer here definitions of factorial irreducible characters of the classical Lie groups as ratios of determinants that share these two features. These factorial characters are each specified by a partition, $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_n)$, and in each case a flagged Jacobi-Trudi identity is derived that expresses the factorial character as a determinant of corresponding factorial characters specified by one-part partitions, $(m)$, for which we supply generating functions. These identities are established by manipulating determinants through the use of certain recurrence relations derived from these generating functions. The transitions to combinatorial realisations of the factorial characters in terms of tableaux are then established by means of non-intersecting lattice path models. The results apply to $gl(n)$, $so(2n+1)$, $sp(2n)$ and $o(2n)$, and are extended to the case of $so(2n)$ by making use of newly defined factorial difference characters.

Tokuyama's Identity for Factorial Schur Functions

A recent paper of Bump, McNamara and Nakasuji introduced a factorial version of Tokuyama's identity, expressing the partition function of a six vertex model as the product of a t-deformed Vandermonde and a Schur function. Here we provide an extension of their result by exploiting the language of primed shifted tableaux, with its proof based on the use of non-intersecting lattice paths.

Half-turn symmetric alternating sign matrices and Tokuyama type factorisation for orthogonal group characters

Half turn symmetric alternating sign matrices (HTSASMs) are special variations of the well-known alternating sign matrices which have a long and fascinating history. HTSASMs are interesting combinatorial objects in their own right and have been the focus of recent study. Here we explore counting weighted HTSASMs with respect to a number of statistics to derive an orthogonal group version of Tokuyama's factorisation formula, which involves a deformation and expansion of Weyl's denominator formula multiplied by a general linear group character. Deformations of Weyl's original denominator formula to other root systems have been discovered by Okada and Simpson, and it is thus natural to ask for versions of Tokuyama's factorisation formula involving other root systems. Here we obtain such a formula involving a deformation of Weyl's denominator formula for the orthogonal group multiplied by a deformation of an orthogonal group character.

Hopf Algebras, Distributive (Laplace) Pairings and Hash Products: A unified approach to tensor product decompositions of group characters

We show for bicommutative graded connected Hopf algebras that a certain distributive (Laplace) subgroup of the convolution monoid of 2-cochains parameterizes certain well behaved Hopf algebra deformations. Using the Laplace group, or its Frobenius subgroup, we define higher derived hash products, and develop a general theory to study their main properties. Applying our results to the (universal) bicommutative graded connected Hopf algebra of symmetric functions, we show that classical tensor product and character decompositions, such as those for the general linear group, mixed co- and contravariant or rational characters, orthogonal and symplectic group characters, Thibon and reduced symmetric group characters, are special cases of higher derived hash products. In the Appendix we discuss a relation to formal group laws.

The Hopf Algebra Structure of the Character Rings of Classical Groups

The character ring \CGL of covariant irreducible tensor representations of the general linear group admits a Hopf algebra structure isomorphic to the Hopf algebra \Sym$ of symmetric functions. Here we study the character rings \CO and \CSp of the orthogonal and symplectic subgroups of the general linear group within the same framework of symmetric functions. We show that \CO and \CSp also admit natural Hopf algebra structures that are isomorphic to that of \CGL, and hence to \Sym. The isomorphisms are determined explicitly, along with the specification of standard bases for \CO and \CSp analogous to those used for \Sym. A major structural change arising from the adoption of these bases is the introduction of new orthogonal and symplectic Schur-Hall scalar products. Significantly, the adjoint with respect to multiplication no longer coincides, as it does in the \CGL case, with a Foulkes derivative or skew operation. The adjoint and Foulkes derivative now require separate definitions, and their properties are explored here in the orthogonal and symplectic cases. Moreover, the Hopf algebras \CO and \CSp are not self-dual. The dual Hopf algebras \CO^* and \CSp^* are identified. Finally, the Hopf algebra of the universal rational character ring \CGLrat of mixed irreducible tensor representations of the general linear group is introduced and its structure maps identified.

Ribbon Hopf algebras from group character rings

We study the diagram alphabet of knot moves associated with the character rings of certain matrix groups. The primary object is the Hopf algebra Char-GL of characters of the finite dimensional polynomial representations of the complex group GL(n) in the inductive limit, realised as the ring of symmetric functions Λ(X) on countably many variables X = {x_1,x_2, ...}. Isomorphic as spaces are the character rings Char-O and Char-Sp of the classical matrix subgroups of GL(n), the orthogonal and symplectic groups. We also analyse the formal character rings Char-H_π of algebraic subgroups of GL(n), comprised of matrix transformations leaving invariant a fixed but arbitrary tensor of Young symmetry type π, which have been introduced in [5] (these include the orthogonal and symplectic groups as special cases). The set of tangle diagrams encoding manipulations of the group and subgroup characters has many elements deriving from products, coproducts, units and counits as well as different types of branching operators. From these elements we assemble for each π a crossing tangle which satisfies the braid relation and which is nontrivial, in spite of the commutative and co-commutative setting. We identify structural elements and verify the axioms to establish that each Char-H_π ring is a ribbon Hopf algebra. The corresponding knot invariant operators are rather weak, giving merely a measure of the writhe.

Enumeration of standard Young tableaux of certain truncated shapes

Unexpected product formulas for the number of standard Young tableaux of certain truncated shapes are found and proved. These include shifted staircase shapes minus a square in the NE corner, rectangular shapes minus a square in the NE corner, and some variations.

A hive model determination of multiplicity-free Schur function products and skew Schur functions

The hive model is a combinatorial device that may be used to determine Littlewood-Richardson coefficients and study their properties. It represents an alternative to the use of the Littlewood-Richardson rule. Here properties of hives are used to determine all possible multiplicity-free Schur function products and skew Schur function expansions. This confirms the results of Stembridge, Gutschwager, and Thomas and Yong, and sheds light on the combinatorial origin of the conditions for being multiplicity-free, as well as illustrating some of the key features and power of the hive model.

Schur positivity of skew Schur function differences and applications to ribbons and Schubert classes

Some new relations on skew Schur function differences are established both combinatorially using Schützenberger's jeu de taquin, and algebraically using Jacobi-Trudi determinants. These relations lead to the conclusion that certain differences of skew Schur functions are Schur positive. Applying these results to a basis of symmetric functions involving ribbon Schur functions confirms the validity of a Schur positivity conjecture due to McNamara. A further application reveals that certain differences of products of Schubert classes are Schubert positive.

Hopf algebras and characters of classical groups

Schur functions provide an integral basis of the ring of symmetric functions. It is shown that this ring has a natural Hopf algebra structure by identifying the appropriate product, coproduct, unit, counit and antipode, and their properties. Characters of covariant tensor irreducible representations of the classical groups GL(n), O(n) and Sp(n) are then expressed in terms of Schur functions, and the Hopf algebra is exploited in the determination of group-subgroup branching rules and the decomposition of tensor products. The analysis is carried out in terms of n-independent universal characters. The corresponding rings, CharGL, CharO and CharSp, of universal characters each have their own natural Hopf algebra structure. The appropriate product, coproduct, unit, counit and antipode are identified in each case.

A Hopf algebraic approach to the theory of group branchings

We describe a Hopf algebraic approach to the Grothendieck ring of representations of subgroups $H_π$ of the general linear group GL(n) which stabilize a tensor of Young symmetry $\{π\}$. It turns out that the representation ring of the subgroup can be described as a Hopf algebra twist, with a 2-cocycle derived from the Cauchy kernel 2-cocycle using plethysms. Due to Schur-Weyl duality we also need to employ the coproduct of the inner multiplication. A detailed analysis including combinatorial proofs for our results can be found in math-ph/0505037. In this paper we focus on the Hopf algebraic treatment, and a more formal approach to representation rings and symmetric functions.
