Hyperscaling in the Domany-Kinzel Cellular Automaton

An apparent violation of hyperscaling at the endpoint of the critical line in the Domany-Kinzel stochastic cellular automaton finds an elementary resolution upon noting that the order parameter is discontinuous at this point. We derive a hyperscaling relation for such transitions and discuss applications to related examples.

Critical Behavior of the Widom-Rowlinson Lattice Model

We report extensive Monte Carlo simulations of the Widom-Rowlinson lattice model in two and three dimensions. Our results yield precise values for the critical activities and densities, and clearly place the critical behavior in the Ising universality class.

Numerical Study of a Field Theory for Directed Percolation

A numerical method is devised for study of stochastic partial differential equations describing directed percolation, the contact process, and other models with a continuous transition to an absorbing state. Owing to the heightened sensitivity to fluctuationsattending multiplicative noise in the vicinity of an absorbing state, a useful method requires discretization of the field variable as well as of space and time. When applied to the field theory for directed percolation in 1+1 dimensions, the method yields critical exponents which compare well against accepted values.

Lattice on Lattice in Two Dimensions

We study a harmonic triangular lattice, which relaxes in the presence of a weak, short-wavelength periodic potential. Monte Carlo simulations reveal that the elastic lattice has only short-ranged positional correlations, despite the absence of defects in either lattice. Long-range orientational order, however, persists in the presence of the background. Our results provide an alternative explanation for the hexatic glassphase observed in high-temperature superconductors, magnetic bubble lattices, and charge density waves in semiconductors.

Generalized Scaling for Models with Multiple Absorbing States

At a continuous transition into a nonunique absorbing state, particle systems may exhibit nonuniversal critical behavior, in apparent violation of hyperscaling. We propose a generalized scaling theory for dynamic critical behavior at a transition into an absorbing state, which is capable of describing exponents which vary according to the initial configuration. The resulting hyperscaling relation is supported by simulations of two lattice models.
