The Impact and Influence of Academic Genealogies

We introduce the concept of an academic genealogy, or AG, and illustrate how AG charts may be constructed and then demonstrate how this methodology can be used by applying it to create the partial or full AG charts to two scientists, Paul A. Samuelson and Ronald E. Mickens.

Construction and Analysis of a Discrete Heat Equation Using Dynamic Consistency: The Meso-scale Limit

We present and analyze a new derivation of the meso-level behavior of a discrete microscopic model of heat transfer. This construction is based on the principle of dynamic consistency. Our work reproduces and corrects, when needed, all the major previous expressions which provide modifications to the standard heat PDE. However, unlike earlier efforts, we do not allow the microscopic level parameters to have zero limiting values. We also give insight into the difficulties of constructing physically valid heat equations within the framework of the general mathematically inequivalent of difference and differential equations.

Dynamically Consistent Approximate Rational Solutions to the Thomas-Fermi Equation

We construct two rational approximate solutions to the Thomas-Fermi (TF) nonlinear differential equation. These expressions follow from an application of the principle of dynamic consistency. In addition to examining differences in the predicted numerical values of the two approximate solutions, we compare these values with an accurate numerical solution obtained using a fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. We also present several new integral relations satisfied by the bounded solutions of the TF equation

A note on exponential-type solutions for the linear, delayed heat partial differential equation

We construct a class of exponential type solutions for the linear, delayed heat equation. These representations may be used to provide a priori ansatzes for certain boundary and/or initial-value problems arising in heat transfer. Several of the important mathematical properties of the representations are examined, including a discussion of the dependence on the delay parameter.

The Imani Periodic Functions: Genesis and Preliminary Results

The Leah-Hamiltonian, $H(x,y)=y^2/2+3x^{4/3}/4$, is introduced as a functional equation for $x(t)$ and $y(t)$. By means of a nonlinear transformation to new independent variables, we show that this functional equation has a special class of periodic solutions which we designate the Imani functions. The explicit construction of these functions is done such that they possess many of the general properties of the standard trigonometric cosine and sine functions. We conclude by providing a listing of a number of currently unresolved issues relating to the Imani functions.

Investigation of Power-Law Damping/Dissipative Forces

The properties of a one space-dimension, one particle dynamical system under the influence of a purely dissipative force are investigated. Assuming this force depends only on the velocity, it is demonstrated, in contrast to the case of linear damping, that there exist dissipative forces for which the particle \textquotedblleft stops" in a finite time. It is also shown, by an explicit example, that other dissipative forces exist such that they produce dynamics in which the particle achieves zero velocity only after an infinite distance has been traveled. Possible applications of these results to more complex situations are discussed.

Nonlinear-damped Duffing oscillators having finite time dynamics

A class of modified Duffing oscillator differential equations, having nonlinear damping forces, are shown to have finite time dynamics, i.e., the solutions oscillate with only a finite number of cycles, and, thereafter, the motion is zero. The relevance of this feature is briefly discussed in relationship to the mathematical modeling, analysis, and estimation of parameters for the vibrations of carbon nano-tubes and graphene sheets, and macroscopic beams and plates.

A Note on an NSFD Scheme for a Mathematical Model of Respiratory Virus Transmission

We construct a nonstandard finite difference (NSFD) scheme for an SIRS mathematical model of respiratory virus transmission. This discretization is in full compliance with the NSFD methodology as formulated by R. E. Mickens. By use of an exact conservation law satisfied by the SIRS differential equations, we are able to determine the corresponding denominator function for the discrete first-order time derivatives. Our scheme is dynamically consistent with the SIRS differential equations since the conservation laws are preserved. Further, the scheme is shown to satisfy a positivity condition for its solutions for all values of the time step-size.
