[Dispersion for the wave equation in the exterior of the torus]{Dispersion for the wave equation in the exterior of the torus in three dimensions}

We prove dispersive estimates for the wave equation in the exterior of a torus. Because no separation of variables into a basis of eigenfunctions and eigenvalues exists for the time harmonic problem, we introduce a related approximate operator for the Dirichlet Laplacian in the exterior of a torus. The approximate operator coincides with the Schrödinger operator with a Pöschl-Teller potential and agrees with the Dirichlet Laplacian to leading order. The operator here which we develop is related to the so-called Mehler-Fock kernel. Using the known solution to the eigenvector and eigenvalue problem of Pöschl-Teller, a high-frequency analysis of the approximate operator for the wave equation can be made accurately. The operator for this problem gives a close approximation to the $L^1\rightarrow L^{\infty}$ dispersive estimate at a suitable small distance from the torus for the corresponding exterior wave operator with Dirichlet Laplacian.

The defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with step-like oscillatory initial data

We study the Cauchy problem for the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation under the assumption that the solution vanishes as $x \to + \infty$ and approaches an oscillatory plane wave as $x \to -\infty$. We first develop an inverse scattering transform formalism for solutions satisfying such step-like boundary conditions. Using this formalism, we prove that there exists a global solution of the corresponding Cauchy problem and establish a representation for this solution in terms of the solution of a Riemann-Hilbert problem. By performing a steepest descent analysis of this Riemann-Hilbert problem, we identify three asymptotic sectors in the half-plane $t \geq 0$ of the $xt$-plane and derive asymptotic formulas for the solution in each of these sectors. Finally, by restricting the constructed solutions to the half-line $x \geq 0$, we find a class of solutions with asymptotically time-periodic boundary values previously sought for in the context of the NLS half-line problem.

Well-posedness of a highly nonlinear shallow water equation on the circle

We present a comprehensive introduction and overview of a recently derived model equation for waves of large amplitude in the context of shallow water waves and provide a literature review of all the available studies on this equation. Furthermore, we establish a novel result concerning the local well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem for space-periodic solutions with initial data from the Sobolev space $H^s$ on the circle for $s>3/2$.

Explicit and exact solutions concerning the Antarctic Circumpolar Current with variable density in spherical coordinates

We use spherical coordinates to devise a new exact solution to the governing equations of geophysical fluid dynamics for an inviscid and incompressible fluid with a general density distribution and subjected to forcing terms. The latter are of paramount importance for the modeling of realistic flows-that is, flows that are observed in some averaged sense in the ocean. Owing to the employment of spherical coordinates we do not need to resort to approximations (e.g. of $f$- and $β$-plane type) that simplify the geometry in the governing equations. Our explicit solution represents a steady purely-azimuthal stratified flow with a free surface, that---thanks to the inclusion of forcing terms and the consideration of the Earth's geometry via spherical coordinates---makes it suitable for describing the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and enables an in-depth analysis of the structure of this flow. In line with the latter aspect, we employ functional analytical techniques to prove that the free surface distortion is defined in a unique and implicit way by means of the pressure applied at the free surface. We conclude our discussion by setting out relations between the monotonicity of the surface pressure and the monotonicity of the surface distortion that concur with the physical expectations.

On the spectral problem associated with the time-periodic nonlinear Schrödinger equation

According to its Lax pair formulation, the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation can be expressed as the compatibility condition of two linear ordinary differential equations with an analytic dependence on a complex parameter. The first of these equations---often referred to as the \emph{$x$-part} of the Lax pair---can be rewritten as an eigenvalue problem for a Zakharov-Shabat operator. The spectral analysis of this operator is crucial for the solution of the initial value problem for the NLS equation via inverse scattering techniques. For space-periodic solutions, this leads to the existence of a Birkhoff normal form, which beautifully exhibits the structure of NLS as an infinite-dimensional completely integrable system. In this paper, we take the crucial steps towards developing an analogous picture for time-periodic solutions by performing a spectral analysis of the \emph{$t$-part} of the Lax pair with a periodic potential.

Shallow water models for stratified equatorial flows

Our aim is to study the effect of a continuous prescribed density variation on the propagation of ocean waves. More precisely, we derive KdV-type shallow water model equations for unidirectional flows along the Equator from the full governing equations by taking into account a prescribed but arbitrary depth-dependent density distribution. In contrast to the case of constant density, we obtain for each fixed water depth a different model equation for the horizontal component of the velocity field. We derive explicit formulas for traveling wave solutions of these model equations and perform a detailed analysis of the effect of a given density distribution on the depth-structure of the corresponding traveling waves.
