Dynamical Generation of Topological Magnetic Lattices for Ultracold Atoms

We propose a scheme to dynamically synthesize a space-periodic effective magnetic field for neutral atoms by time-periodic magnetic field pulses. When atomic spin adiabatically follows the direction of the effective magnetic field, an adiabatic scalar potential together with a geometric vector potential emerges for the atomic center-of-mass motion, due to the Berry phase effect. While atoms hop between honeycomb lattice sites formed by the minima of the adiabatic potential, complex Peierls phase factors in the hopping coefficients are induced by the vector potential, which facilitate a topological Chern insulator. With further tuning of external parameters, both a topological phase transition and topological flat bands can be achieved, highlighting realistic prospects for studying strongly correlated phenomena in this system. Our Letter presents an alternative pathway towards creating and manipulating topological states of ultracold atoms by magnetic fields.

$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking for the scattering problem in a one-dimensional non-Hermitian lattice model

We study the $\mathcal{PT} $-symmetry breaking for the scattering problem in a one-dimensional (1D) non-Hermitian tight-binding lattice model with balanced gain and loss distributed on two adjacent sites. In the scattering process the system undergoes a transition from the exact $\mathcal{PT} $-symmetry phase to the phase with spontaneously breaking $\mathcal{PT} $-symmetry as the amplitude of complex potentials increases. Using the S-matrix method, we derive an exact discriminant, which can be used to distinguish different symmetry phases, and analytically determine the exceptional point for the symmetry breaking. In the $\mathcal{PT} $-symmetry breaking region, we also confirm the appearance of the unique feature, i.e., the coherent perfect absorption Laser, in this simple non-Hermitian lattice model. The study of the scattering problem of such a simple model provides an additional way to unveil the physical effect of non-Hermitian $\mathcal{PT} $-symmetric potentials.

Interplay between Fano resonance and $\mathcal{PT} $ symmetry in non-Hermitian discrete systems

We study the effect of PT-symmetric complex potentials on the transport properties of non-Hermitian systems, which consist of an infinite linear chain and two side-coupled defect points with PT-symmetric complex on-site potentials. By analytically solving the scattering problem of two typical models, which display standard Fano resonances in the absence of non-Hermitian terms, we find that the PT-symmetric imaginary potentials can lead to some pronounced effects on transport properties of our systems, including changes from the perfect reflection to perfect transmission, and rich behaviors for the absence or existence of the prefect reflection at one and two resonant frequencies. Our study can help us to understand the interplay between the Fano resonance and PT symmetry in non-Hermitian discrete systems, which may be realizable in optical waveguide experiments.

Macroscopic quantum coherence in spinor condensates confined in an anisotropic potential

We investigate the macroscopic quantum coherence of a spin-1 Rb condensate confined in an anisotropic potential. Under the single-mode approximation, we show that the system can be modeled as a biaxial quantum magnet due to the interplay between the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction and the anisotropic potential. By applying a magnetic field along the hard-axis, we show that the tunneling splitting oscillates as a function of the field strength. We also propose an experimental scheme to detect the oscillatory behavior of the tunneling splitting by employing the Landau-Zener tunneling.

Phonon-assisted Kondo Effect in a Single-Molecule Transistor out of Equilibrium

The joint effect of the electron-phonon interaction and Kondo effect on the nonequilibrium transport through the single molecule transistor is investigated by using the improved canonical transformation scheme and extended equation of motion approach. Two types of Kondo phonon-satellites with different asymmetric shapes are fully confirmed in the spectral function, and are related to the electron spin singlet or hole spin singlet, respectively. Moreover, when a moderate Zeeman splitting is caused by a local magnetic field, the Kondo satellites in the spin resolved spectral function are found disappeared on one side of the main peak, which is opposite for different spin component. All these peculiar signatures that manifest themselves in the nonlinear differential conductance, are explained with a clear physics picture.

Fano Effect through Parallel-coupled Double Coulomb Islands

By means of the non-equilibrium Green function and equation of motion method, the electronic transport is theoretically studied through a parallel-coupled double quantum dots(DQD) in the presence of the on-dot Coulomb correlation, with an emphasis put on the quantum interference. It has been found that in the Coulomb blockage regime, the quantum interference between the bonding and antiboding DQD states or that between their Coulomb blockade counterparts may result in the Fano resonance in the conductance spectra, and the Fano peak doublet may be observed under certain non-equilibrium condition. The possibility of manipulating the Fano lineshape is predicted by tuning the dot-lead coupling and magnetic flux threading the ring connecting the dots and leads. Similar to the case without Coulomb interaction, the direction of the asymmetric tail of Fano lineshape can be flipped by the external field. Most importantly, by tuning the magnetic flux, the function of four relevant states can be interchanged, giving rise to the swap effect, which might play a key role as a qubit in the quantum computation.

Effects of electron-phonon interaction on non-equilibrium transport through single-molecule transistor

On the basis of the nonequilibrium Green's function and nonperturbative canonical transformation for the local electron-phonon interaction (EPI), the quantum transport through a single-molecule transistor(SMT) has been investigated with a particular attention paid to the joint effect of the EPI and SMT-lead coupling on the spectral function and conductance. In addition to the usual EPI-induced renormalized effects (such as the red-shift, sharpening, and phonon-sidebands of the SMT level), owing to improved disentagling the electron-phonon system, it has been found that, the profile of the spectral function of the SMT electron is sensitive to lead chemical potentials, thus can readily be manipulated by tuning the bias as well as the SMT-gate voltage. As a consequence, the broken particle-hole symmetry in this system can be clearly recognized through the phonon sidebands in the spectral function. These EPI effects also manifest themselves in the nonequilibrium transport properties of the SMT, particularly at low temperature.

Tunable Fano effect in parallel-coupled double quantum dot system

With the help of the Green function technique and the equation of motion approach, the electronic transport through a parallel-coupled double quantum dot(DQD) is theoretically studied. Owing to the inter-dot coupling, the bonding and antibonding states of the artificial quantum-dot-molecule may constitute an appropriate basis set. Based on this picture, the Fano interference in the conductance spectra of the DQD system is readily explained. The possibility of manipulating the Fano lineshape in the tunnelling spectra of the DQD system is explored by tuning the dot-lead coupling, the inter-dot coupling, the magnetic flux threading the ring connecting dots and leads, and the flux difference between two sub-rings. It has been found that by making use of various tuning, the direction of the asymmetric tail of Fano lineshape may be flipped by external fields, and the continuous conductance spectra may be magnetically manipulated with lineshape retained. More importantly, by adjusting the magnetic flux, the function of two molecular states can be exchanged, giving rise to a swap effect, which might play a role as a qubit in the quantum computation.

Quantum coherence of double-well BEC: a SU(2)-coherent-state path-integral approach

Macroscopic quantum coherence of Bose gas in a double-well potential is studied based on SU(2)-coherent-state path-integral. The ground state and fluctuations around it can be obtained by this method. In this picture, one can obtain macroscopic quantum superposition states for attractive Bose gas. The coherent gap of degenerate ground states is obtained with the instanton technique. The phenomenon of macroscopic quantum self-trapping is also discussed.

Macroscopic quantum coherence in antiferromagnetic molecular magnets

The macroscopic quantum coherence in a biaxial antiferromagnetic molecular magnet in the presence of magnetic field acting parallel to its hard anisotropy axis is studied within the two-sublattice model. On the basis of instanton technique in the spin-coherent-state path-integral representation, both the rigorous Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin exponent and preexponential factor for the ground-state tunnel splitting are obtained. We find that the quantum fluctuations around the classical paths can not only induce a new quantum phase previously reported by Chiolero and Loss (Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 169 (1998)), but also have great influnence on the intensity of the ground-state tunnel splitting. Those features clearly have no analogue in the ferromagnetic molecular magnets. We suggest that they may be the universal behaviors in all antiferromagnetic molecular magnets. The analytical results are complemented by exact diagonalization calculation.
