Semiparametric integrative interaction analysis for non-small-cell lung cancer

In the genomic analysis, it is significant while challenging to identify markers associated with cancer outcomes or phenotypes. Based on the biological mechanisms of cancers and the characteristics of datasets as well, this paper proposes a novel integrative interaction approach under the semiparametric model, in which the genetic factors and environmental factors are included as the parametric and nonparametric components, respectively. The goal of this approach is to identify the genetic factors and gene-gene interactions associated with cancer outcomes, and meanwhile, estimate the nonlinear effects of environmental factors. The proposed approach is based on the threshold gradient directed regularization (TGDR) technique. Simulation studies indicate that the proposed approach outperforms in the identification of main effects and interactions, and has favorable estimation and prediction accuracy compared with the alternative methods. The analysis of non-small-cell lung carcinomas (NSCLC) datasets from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) are conducted, showing that the proposed approach can identify markers with important implications and have favorable performance in prediction accuracy, identification stability, and computation cost.

Reliable Extraction of Semantic Information and Rate of Innovation Estimation for Graph Signals

Semantic signal processing and communications are poised to play a central part in developing the next generation of sensor devices and networks. A crucial component of a semantic system is the extraction of semantic signals from the raw input signals, which has become increasingly tractable with the recent advances in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. The accurate extraction of semantic signals using the aforementioned ML and AI methods, and the detection of semantic innovation for scheduling transmission and/or storage events are critical tasks for reliable semantic signal processing and communications. In this work, we propose a reliable semantic information extraction framework based on our previous work on semantic signal representations in a hierarchical graph-based structure. The proposed framework includes a time integration method to increase fidelity of ML outputs in a class-aware manner, a graph-edit-distance based metric to detect innovation events at the graph-level and filter out sporadic errors, and a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) to produce smooth and reliable graph signals. The proposed methods within the framework are demonstrated individually and collectively through simulations and case studies based on real-world computer vision examples.

System-Level Evaluation of Beam Hopping in NR-Based LEO Satellite Communication System

Satellite communication by leveraging the use of low earth orbit (LEO) satellites is expected to play an essential role in future communication systems through providing ubiquitous and continuous wireless connectivity. This thus has motivated the work in the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) to ensure the operation of fifth generation (5G) New Radio (NR) protocols for non-terrestrial network (NTN). In this paper, we consider a NR-based LEO satellite communication system, where satellites equipped with phased array antennas are employed to serve user equipments (UEs) on the ground. To reduce payload weight and meet the time-varying traffic demands of UEs, an efficient beam hopping scheme considering both the traffic demands and inter-beam interference is proposed to jointly schedule beams and satellite transmit power. Then based on NR protocols, we present the first system-level evaluations of beam hopping scheme in LEO satellite system under different operating frequency bands and traffic models. Simulation results indicate that significant performance gains can be achieved by the proposed beam hopping scheme, especially under the distance limit constraint that avoids scheduling adjacent beams simultaneously, as compared to benchmark schemes.

COARSE3D: Class-Prototypes for Contrastive Learning in Weakly-Supervised 3D Point Cloud Segmentation

Annotation of large-scale 3D data is notoriously cumbersome and costly. As an alternative, weakly-supervised learning alleviates such a need by reducing the annotation by several order of magnitudes. We propose COARSE3D, a novel architecture-agnostic contrastive learning strategy for 3D segmentation. Since contrastive learning requires rich and diverse examples as keys and anchors, we leverage a prototype memory bank capturing class-wise global dataset information efficiently into a small number of prototypes acting as keys. An entropy-driven sampling technique then allows us to select good pixels from predictions as anchors. Experiments on three projection-based backbones show we outperform baselines on three challenging real-world outdoor datasets, working with as low as 0.001% annotations.

Myopia prediction for adolescents via time-aware deep learning

Background: Quantitative prediction of the adolescents' spherical equivalent based on their variable-length historical vision records. Methods: From October 2019 to March 2022, we examined binocular uncorrected visual acuity, axial length, corneal curvature, and axial of 75,172 eyes from 37,586 adolescents aged 6-20 years in Chengdu, China. 80\% samples consist of the training set and the remaining 20\% form the testing set. Time-Aware Long Short-Term Memory was used to quantitatively predict the adolescents' spherical equivalent within two and a half years. Result: The mean absolute prediction error on the testing set was 0.273-0.257 for spherical equivalent, ranging from 0.189-0.160 to 0.596-0.473 if we consider different lengths of historical records and different prediction durations. Conclusions: Time-Aware Long Short-Term Memory was applied to captured the temporal features in irregularly sampled time series, which is more in line with the characteristics of real data and thus has higher applicability, and helps to identify the progression of myopia earlier. The overall error 0.273 is much smaller than the criterion for clinically acceptable prediction, say 0.75.

The Complete SC-invariant Affine Automorphisms of Polar Codes

Automorphism ensemble (AE) decoding for polar codes was proposed by decoding permuted codewords with successive cancellation (SC) decoders in parallel and hence has lower latency compared to that of successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding. However, some automorphisms are SC-invariant, thus are redundant in AE decoding. In this paper, we find a necessary and sufficient condition related to the block lower-triangular structure of transformation matrices to identify SC-invariant automorphisms. Furthermore, we provide an algorithm to determine the complete SC-invariant affine automorphisms under a specific polar code construction.

Distributed Learning for Time-varying Networks: A Scalable Design

The wireless network is undergoing a trend from "onnection of things" to "connection of intelligence". With data spread over the communication networks and computing capability enhanced on the devices, distributed learning becomes a hot topic in both industrial and academic communities. Many frameworks, such as federated learning and federated distillation, have been proposed. However, few of them takes good care of obstacles such as the time-varying topology resulted by the characteristics of wireless networks. In this paper, we propose a distributed learning framework based on a scalable deep neural network (DNN) design. By exploiting the permutation equivalence and invariance properties of the learning tasks, the DNNs with different scales for different clients can be built up based on two basic parameter sub-matrices. Further, model aggregation can also be conducted based on these two sub-matrices to improve the learning convergence and performance. Finally, simulation results verify the benefits of the proposed framework by compared with some baselines.

Fast polar codes for terabits-per-second throughput communications

Targeting high-throughput and low-power communications, we implement two successive cancellation (SC) decoders for polar codes. With $16nm$ ASIC technology, the area efficiency and energy efficiency are $4Tbps/mm^2$ and $0.63pJ/bit$, respectively, for the unrolled decoder, and $561Gbps/mm^2$ and $1.21pJ/bit$, respectively, for the recursive decoder. To achieve such a high throughput, a novel code construction, coined as fast polar codes, is proposed and jointly optimized with a highly-parallel SC decoding architecture. First, we reuse existing modules to fast decode more outer code blocks, and then modify code construction to facilitate faster decoding for all outer code blocks up to a degree of parallelism of $16$. Furthermore, parallel comparison circuits and bit quantization schemes are customized for hardware implementation. Collectively, they contribute to an $2.66\times$ area efficiency improvement and $33\%$ energy saving over the state of the art.

A unified polar decoder platform for low-power and low-cost devices

In this paper, we design a polar decoding platform for diverse application scenarios that require low-cost and low-power communications. Specifically, prevalent polar decoders such as successive cancellation (SC), SC-list (SCL) and Fano decoders are all supported under the same architecture. Unlike high-throughput or low-latency decoders that promote parallelism, this architecture promotes serialization by repeatedly calling a ``sub-process'' that is executed by a core module. The resulting serial SCL-8 decoder is only 3 times as big as an SC decoder. Cost and power are minimized through resource sharing and adaptive decoding techniques, etc. We carried out performance simulation and hardware implementation to evaluate the actual chip area and energy consumption.

Integrated Communication and Navigation for Ultra-Dense LEO Satellite Networks: Vision, Challenges and Solutions

Next generation beyond 5G networks are expected to provide both Terabits per second data rate communication services and centimeter-level accuracy localization services in an efficient, seamless and cost-effective manner. However, most of the current communication and localization systems are separately designed, leading to an under-utilization of radio resources and network performance degradation. In this paper, we propose an integrated communication and navigation (ICAN) framework to fully unleash the potential of ultra-dense LEO satellite networks for optimal provisioning of differentiated services. The specific benefits, feasibility analysis and challenges for ICAN enabled satellite system are explicitly discussed. In particular, a novel beam hopping based ICAN satellite system solution is devised to adaptively tune the network beam layout for dual functional communication and positioning purposes. Furthermore, a thorough experimental platform is built following the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) defined non-terrestrial network simulation parameters to validate the performance gain of the ICAN satellite system

On the Weight Spectrum of Pre-Transformed Polar Codes

Polar codes are the first class of channel codes achieving the symmetric capacity of the binary-input discrete memoryless channels with efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. But the weight spectrum of Polar codes is relatively poor compared to RM codes, which degrades their ML performance. Pre-transformation with an upper-triangular matrix (including cyclic redundancy check (CRC), parity-check (PC) and polarization-adjusted convolutional (PAC) codes), improves weight spectrum while retaining polarization. In this paper, the weight spectrum of upper-triangular pre-transformed Polar Codes is mathematically analyzed. In particular, we focus on calculating the number of low-weight codewords due to their impact on error-correction performance. Simulation results verify the accuracy of the analysis.

Cooperative Beam Hopping for Accurate Positioning in Ultra-Dense LEO Satellite Networks

In ultra-dense LEO satellite networks, conventional communication-oriented beam pattern design cannot provide multiple favorable signals from different satellites simultaneously, and thus leads to poor positioning performance. To tackle this issue, in this paper, we propose a novel cooperative beam hopping (BH) framework to adaptively tune beam layouts suitable for multi-satellite coordinated positioning. On this basis, a joint user association, BH design and power allocation optimization problem is formulated to minimize average Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB). An efficient flexible BH control algorithm (FBHCA) is then proposed to solve the problem. Finally, a thorough experimental platform is built following the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) defined non-terrestrial network (NTN) simulation parameters to validate the performance gain of the devised algorithm. The numerical results demonstrate that FBHCA can significantly improve CRLB performance over the benchmark scheme.

The Complete Affine Automorphism Group of Polar Codes

Recently, a permutation-based successive cancellation (PSC) decoding framework for polar codes attaches much attention. It decodes several permuted codewords with independent successive cancellation (SC) decoders. Its latency thus can be reduced to that of SC decoding. However, the PSC framework is ineffective for permutations falling into the lower-triangular affine (LTA) automorphism group, as they are invariant under SC decoding. As such, a larger block lower-triangular affine (BLTA) group that contains SC-variant permutations was discovered for decreasing polar codes. But it was unknown whether BLTA equals the complete automorphism group. In this paper, we prove that BLTA equals the complete automorphisms of decreasing polar codes that can be formulated as affine trasformations.

Smart Scheduling based on Deep Reinforcement Learning for Cellular Networks

To improve the system performance towards the Shannon limit, advanced radio resource management mechanisms play a fundamental role. In particular, scheduling should receive much attention, because it allocates radio resources among different users in terms of their channel conditions and QoS requirements. The difficulties of scheduling algorithms are the tradeoffs need to be made among multiple objectives, such as throughput, fairness and packet drop rate. We propose a smart scheduling scheme based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL). We not only verify the performance gain achieved, but also provide implementation-friend designs, i.e., a scalable neural network design for the agent and a virtual environment training framework. With the scalable neural network design, the DRL agent can easily handle the cases when the number of active users is time-varying without the need to redesign and retrain the DRL agent. Training the DRL agent in a virtual environment offline first and using it as the initial version in the practical usage helps to prevent the system from suffering from performance and robustness degradation due to the time-consuming training. Through both simulations and field tests, we show that the DRL-based smart scheduling outperforms the conventional scheduling method and can be adopted in practical systems.

On the Transcriptomic Signature and General Stress State Associated with Aneuploidy

Whether aneuploid cells with diverse karyotypes have any properties in common has a been a subject of intense interest. A recent study by Terhorst et al. (1) reinvestigated the common aneuploidy gene expression (CAGE), disputing the conclusion of our recent work (2). In this short article, which has been submitted to PNAS as a Letter to the Editor, we explain our major concerns about Terhorst et al. and why we believe that our previous conclusion stands valid.

A Soft Cancellation Decoder for Parity-Check Polar Codes

Polar codes has been selected as the channel coding scheme for 5G new radio (NR) control channel. Specifically, a special type of parity-check polar (PC-Polar) codes was adopted in uplink control information (UCI). In this paper, we propose a parity-check soft-cancellation (PC-SCAN) algorithm and its simplified version to decode PC-Polar codes. The potential benefits are two-fold. First, PC-SCAN can provide soft output for PC-Polar codes, which is essential for advanced turbo receivers. Second, the decoding performance is better than that of successive cancellation (SC). This is due to the fact that parity-check constraints can be exploited by PC-SCAN to enhance the reliability of other information bits over the iterations. Moreover, we describe a cyclic-shift-register (CSR) based implementation "CSR-SCAN" to reduce both hardware cost and latency with minimum performance loss.

Exclusive quarkonium production or decay in soft gluon factorization

In this paper, we study the application of the recently proposed soft gluon factorization (SGF) to exclusive quarkonium production or decay. We find that in the nonrelativistic QCD factorization framework there are too many nonperturbative parameters. Thanks to the factorization of kinematical physics from dynamical physics, the SGF significantly reduces the number of nonperturbative parameters. Therefore, the SGF can improve our predictive power of exclusive quarkonium production or decay. By applying to $η_c+γ$ production at B-factories, our result is the closest one to data among all theoretical calculations.

Toward Terabits-per-second Communications: A High-Throughput Hardware Implementation of $G_N$-Coset Codes

Recently, a parallel decoding algorithm of $G_N$-coset codes was proposed. The algorithm exploits two equivalent decoding graphs. For each graph, the inner code part, which consists of independent component codes, is decoded in parallel. The extrinsic information of the code bits is obtained and iteratively exchanged between the graphs until convergence. This algorithm enjoys a higher decoding parallelism than the previous successive cancellation algorithms, due to the avoidance of serial outer code processing. In this work, we present a hardware implementation of the parallel decoding algorithm, it can support maximum $N=16384$. We complete the decoder's physical layout in TSMC $16nm$ process and the size is $999.936μm\times 999.936μm, \,\approx 1.00mm^2$. The decoder's area efficiency and power consumption are evaluated for the cases of $N=16384,K=13225$ and $N=16384, K=14161$. Scaled to $7nm$ process, the decoder's throughput is higher than $477Gbps/mm^2$ and $533Gbps/mm^2$ with five iterations.
