$β$-expansion: A Theoretical Framework for Fast and Recursive Construction of Polar Codes

In this work, we introduce $β$-expansion, a notion borrowed from number theory, as a theoretical framework to study fast construction of polar codes based on a recursive structure of universal partial order (UPO) and polarization weight (PW) algorithm. We show that polar codes can be recursively constructed from UPO by continuously solving several polynomial equations at each recursive step. From these polynomial equations, we can extract an interval for $β$, such that ranking the synthetic channels through a closed-form $β$-expansion preserves the property of nested frozen sets, which is a desired feature for low-complex construction. In an example of AWGN channels, we show that this interval for $β$ converges to a constant close to $1.1892 \approx 2^{1/4}$ when the code block-length trends to infinity. Both asymptotic analysis and simulation results validate our theoretical claims.

A quantitative description of Nernst effect in high-temperature superconductors

A quantitative vortex-fluid model for flux-flow resistivity $ρ$ and Nernst signal $e_N$ in high-temperature superconductors (HTSC) is proposed. Two kinds of vortices, magnetic and thermal, are considered, and the damping viscosity $η$ is modeled by extending the Bardeen-Stephen model to include the contributions of flux pinning at low temperature and in weak magnetic fields, and vortex-vortex collisions in strong magnetic fields. Remarkably accurate descriptions for both Nernst signal of six samples and flux flow resistivity are achieved over a wide range of temperature $T$ and magnetic field $B$. A discrepancy of three orders of magnitude between data and Anderson's model of Nernst signal is pointed out and revised using experimental values of $η$ from magnetoresistance. Furthermore, a two-step procedure is developed to reliably extract, from the Nernst signal, a set of physical parameters characterizing the vortex dynamics, which yields predictions of local superfluid density $n_s$, the Kosterlitz coefficient $b$ of thermal vortices, and upper critical field and temperature. Application of the model and systematic measurement of relevant physical quantities from Nernst signal in other HTSC samples are discussed.

Combined Analysis of the CP Properties of The Higgs Boson in Effective Higgs Lagrangian

CP violation effects of the Higgs stem from not only CP-violation interactions but also an ambiguous defined CP state. The two CPV sources are coherently studied based on an effective Higgs Lagrangian. The constraints from unitarity limits for $WW$ and $ZZ$ scatterings are proposed to restrict Higgs couplings to weak gauge bosons. Five interesting cases are classified in terms of CPV sources to investigate the Higgs CP properties. The allowed ranges are shown from fitting results to the signal strengths of the Higgs measured by ATLAS and CMS.

Impact of $η_c$ hadroproduction data on charmonium production and polarization within NRQCD framework

With the recent LHCb data on $η_c$ production and based on heavy quark spin symmetry, we obtain the long-distance matrix elements for both $η_c$ and $J/ψ$ productions, among which, the color-singlet one for $η_c$ is obtained directly by the fit of experiment for the first time. Using our long-distance matrix elements, we can provide good description of the $η_c$ and $J/ψ$ hadroproduction measurements. Our predictions on $J/ψ$ polarization are in good agreement with the LHCb data and pass through the two sets of CDF measurements in medium $p_t$ region. Considering all the possible uncertainties carefully, we obtained quite narrow bands of the $J/ψ$ polarization curves.

Rashbon condensation in a Bose gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling

We show that in a two-component Bose gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) two atoms can form bound states (Rashbons) with any intra-species scattering length. At zero center-of-mass momentum there are two degenerate Rashbons due to time-reversal symmetry, but the degeneracy is lifted at finite in-plane momentum with two different effective masses. A stable Rashbon condensation can be created in a dilute system with weakly attractive intra-species and repulsive inter-species interactions. The critical temperature of Rashbon condensation is about six times smaller than the BEC transition temperature of an ideal Bose gas. Due Rashba SOC, excitations in the Rashbon condensation phase are anisotropic in momentum space.

Forward-backward multiplicity correlations of target fragments in nucleus-emulsion collisions at a few hundred MeV/nucleon

The forward-backward multiplicity and correlations of target evaporated fragment(black track particle) and target recoiled proton(grey track particle) emitted in 150 A MeV He-emulsion, 290 A MeV C-emulsion, 400 A MeV C-emulsion, 400 A MeV Ne-emulsion and 500 A MeV Fe-emulsion interactions are investigated. It is found that the forward and backward averaged multiplicity of grey, black and heavily ionized track particle increase with the increase of target size. Averaged multiplicity of forward black track particle, backward black track particle, and backward grey track particle do not depend on the projectile size and energy, but the averaged multiplicity of forward grey track particle increases with increase of projectile size and energy. The backward grey track particle multiplicity distribution follows an exponential decay law and the decay constant decreases with increase of target size. The backward-forward multiplicity correlations follow linear law which is independent of the projectile size and energy, and the saturation effect is observed in some heavy target data sets.

Next-to-Leading-Order study on the associate production of $J/ψ+γ$ at the LHC

The associate $J/ψ+γ$ production at the LHC is studied completely at next-to-leading-order (NLO) within the framework of nonrelativistic QCD. By using three sets of color-octet long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) obtained in previous prompt $J/ψ$ studies, we find that only one of them can result in a positive transverse momentum ($p_t$) distribution of $J/ψ$ production rate at large $p_t$ region. Based on reasonable consideration to cut down background, our estimation is measurable upto $p_t=50$GeV with present data sample collected at $8$TeV LHC. All the color-octet LDMEs in $J/ψ$ production could be fixed sensitively by including this proposed measurement and our calculation, and then confident conclusion on $J/ψ$ polarization puzzle could be achieved.

Testing the QCD fragmentation mechanism on heavy quarkonium production at LHC

We calculate the fragmentation function for charm quark into J/psi at the QCD next-to-leading-order (NLO) and find that the produced J/psi is of larger momentum fraction than it is at the leading-order. Based on the fragmentation function and partonic processes calculated at the NLO, the transverse momentum distribution on J/psi hadroproduction associated with a charm c (or \bar{c}) jet are predicted. We find that the distribution is enhanced by a factor of 2.0--3.3 at the NLO as p_t increased from 10 GeV to 100 GeV and it is measurable at the LHC with charm tagger. The measurement at the LHC will supply a first chance to directly test the QCD fragmentation mechanism on heavy quarkonium production where the fragmentation function is calculable in perturbative QCD. It is also applied to J/psi (Upsilon) production in the decay of Z^0 (top quark).

The next-to-leading-order QCD correction to inclusive J/ψ(Υ) production in Z^0 decay

In this paper, we study the $J/ψ(Υ)$ production in Z boson decay in color-singlet model(CSM). We calculate the next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD correction to $Z \to Quarkonium+Q\bar{Q}$, the dominant contribution in the CSM, with the vector and axial-vector parts in $ZQ\bar{Q}$ vertex being treated separately. The results show that the vector and axial-vector parts have the same K factor (the ratio of NLO result to leading-order result) 1.13 with the renormalization scale $μ$=2$m_c$ and $m_c=1.5GeV$, and the K factor falls to 0.918 when applying the Brodsky, Lepage, and Mackenzie(BLM) renormalization scale scheme with obtained $μ_{BLM}=2.28GeV$ and $m_c=1.5$GeV. By including the contributions from the next-dominant ones, the photon and gluon fragmentation processes, the branching ratio for $Z \to J/ψ_{prompt}+X$ is $(7.3 \sim 10.0)\times 10^{-5}$ with the uncertainty consideration for the renormalization scale and Charm quark mass. The results are about half of the central value of the experimental measurement 2.1$\times10^{-4}$. Furthermore, the $J/ψ$ energy distribution in our calculation is not well consistent with the experimental data. Therefore, even at QCD NLO, the contribution to $Z \to J/ψ_{prompt}+X$ from the CSM can not fully account for the experimental measurement. And there should be contributions from other mechanisms, such as the color-octet(COM) contributions. We define $R_{c\bar{c}}=\frac{Γ(Z \to J/ψc\bar{c}X)}{Γ(Z \to J/ψX)}$ and obtain $R_{cc}=0.84$ for only CSM contribution and $R_{cc}=0.49$ for COM and CSM contributions together. Then $R_{cc}$ measurement could be used to clarify the COM contributions.

J/ψpolarization in photo-production up-to the next-to-leading order of QCD

We investigate the J/psi polarization in photoproduction at the Hadron Electron Ring Accelerator(HERA) up to the next-to-leading order of QCD. The results show that the transverse momentum p_t and energy fraction z distributions of J/psi production do not agree with the observed ones very well. The theoretical uncertainties for the z distributions of the J/psi polarization parameters with respect to various choices of the renormalization and factorization scales are too large to give an accurate prediction. The uncertainties for the p_t distributions of these parameters are small when p_t>3GeV and the obtained p_t distributions can not describe the experimental data even in this region.

QED contribution to the production of J/ψ+c\bar{c}+X at the Tevatron and LHC

We calculate α^{2}α_{s}^{2} order QED contribution to J/ψproduction in pp(\bar{p})\to J/ψ+c\bar{c} color-singlet process at the Tevatron and LHC in the framework of non-relativistic QCD. The contribution of the interference between the α^{2}α_{s}^{2} QED and α_{s}^{4} QCD is also taken into account. The J/ψproduction associated with a charm quark pair could be a measurable signal at hadron collider experiment. Our calculations show that by including the QED contribution, the p_{t} distribution is enhanced by a factor of 1.5 (1.9) at the Tevatron (LHC) at p_{t}=50 (100) GeV. In addition, the polarization of J/ψturns from unpolarized in all region to increasingly transverse when p_{t} becomes larger.

Photoproduction of $J/ψ$ in association with a $c\bar{c}$ pair

Based on the color-singlet model, we investigate the photoproduction of $J/ψ$ associated with a $c \bar{c}$ pair with all subprocesses including the direct, single-resolved, and double-resolved channels. The amplitude squared of these subprocesses are obtained analytically. By choosing corresponding parameters, we give theoretical predictions for the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum distributions both at the LEPII and at the future photon colliders for these subprocesses. The numerical results show that at the LEPII these processes can not give enough contributions to account for the experimental data, and it indicates that the color-octet mechanism may still be needed. At the photon collider with the laser back scattering photons, the resolved photon channe will dominate over the direct one in small and moderate $p_t$ regions with large $\sqrt{s}$. By measuring the $J/ψ$ production associated with a $c\bar{c}$ pair, this process can be separated from the inclusive $J/ψ$ production and may provide a new chance to test the color-singlet contributions.

J/ψProduction Via Photon Fragmentation at Hadron Colliders

The transverse momentum ($p_t$) distributions of production and polarization for $J/ψ$ measured by CDF Collaboration are still challenging our understanding of the heavy quarkonium production mechanism even with recent significant theoretical progresses on the next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD calculation. We suggest a new mechanism for $J/ψ$ production at hadron collider, $pp(\bar p)\to γ^{\ast}(J/ψ)+X$ with $J/ψ$ from a virtual photon $γ^{\ast}$ fragmentation. Our calculations show it's $p_t$ distribution at NLO will be larger than that of the conventional $J/ψ$ production from the color-singlet mechanism at NLO when $p_{t}>26$ (35) GeV at the Tevatron (LHC) and reach about 6 (10) times of the conventional one when $p_t=50$ (100) GeV at the Tevatron (LHC), in spite of a suppression factor $(α/α_s)^2$ that is associated with the QED and QCD coupling constants. In addition, it also has large impact on the $p_{t}$ distribution of $J/ψ$ polarization in large $p_{t}$ region. Therefore, it is a important mechanism for $J/ψ$ production at large $p_t$ region especially for the LHC.

Pair Production of Heavy Quarkonium and $B_c(^*)$ Mesons at Hadron Colliders

We investigate the pair production of S-wave heavy quarkonium at the LHC in the color-singlet mechanism (CSM) and estimate the contribution from the gluon fragmentation process in the color-octet mechanism (COM) for comparison. With the matrix elements extracted previously in the leading order calculations, the numerical results show that the production rates are quite large for the pair production processes at the LHC. The $p_t$ distribution of double $J/ψ$ production in the CSM is dominant over that in the COM when $p_t$ is smaller than about 8GeV. For the production of double $Υ$, the contribution of the COM is always larger than that in the CSM. The large differences in the theoretical predictions between the CSM and COM for the $p_t$ distributions in the large $p_t$ region are useful in clarifying the effects of COM on the quarkonium production. We also investigate the pair production of S-wave $B_c$ and $B_c^*$ mesons, and the measurement of these processes is useful to test the CSM and extract the LDMEs for the $B_c$ and $B_c^*$ mesons.

Next-to-Leading-Order QCD corrections to J/ψ(Υ)+γproduction at the LHC

In this work, we calculate the next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD corrections to the process $p+p \to J/ψ+ γ$ via the color-singlet mechanism at the LHC. The results show that the partial cross section ($p_t^{J/ψ}>$3GeV and $|y^{J/ψ,γ}|<$3) is enhanced by a factor of about 2.0, and the differential cross section can be enhanced by two orders of magnitude in the large transverse momentum region of $J/ψ$. Furthermore, the polarization of $J/ψ$ changes from transverse polarization at leading-order to longitudinal polarization at NLO. For the inclusive $J/ψ$ hadroproduction, it is known that the color-octet contributions are one order of magnitude larger than the color-singlet contribution, and the polarization distribution is dominated by the color-octet behavior at NLO. In contrast, for $J/ψ+γ$ production the color-singlet contribution is of the same order as the color-octet contribution, and the polarization distribution arises from both the color-singlet and color-octet. Therefore, measurements of $J/ψ$ production associated with a direct photon at the hadron collider could be an important supplement to testify the theoretical framework treating with the heavy quarkonium. In addition, an NLO QCD correction to $Υ+γ$ production at the LHC is also presented in this paper.

Cost and Effects of Pinning Control for Network Synchronization

In this paper, the problem of pinning control for synchronization of complex dynamical networks is discussed. A cost function of the controlled network is defined by the feedback gain and the coupling strength of the network. An interesting result is that lower cost is achieved by the control scheme of pinning nodes with smaller degrees. Some rigorous mathematical analysis is presented for achieving lower cost in the synchronization of different star-shaped networks. Numerical simulations on some non-regular complex networks generated by the Barabasi-Albert model and various star-shaped networks are shown for verification and illustration.

Band Edge Effects and Normal Mode Propagation in Waveguide Magnetophotonic Crystals

A study of band edge phenomena in ridge waveguide magnetophotonic crystals is presented. Normal mode analysis is used to examine the near-band edge and Bragg center-wavelength group velocities and their relation to the polarization. Large polarization departures from the input are observed in Bragg gratings patterned by focused-ion-beam milling on liquid-phase-epitaxial (LPE) BiLuIG films on (111) gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) substrates. Transfer matrix analysis of the spectral response in the photonic crystals allows the determination of the phase of the elliptically polarized normal modes from measured transmittances and polarization rotation. Unlike non-birefringent Faraday rotators a non-linear-relation exists between polarization rotation and the normal mode phase difference. Large phase differences between right- and left-elliptically polarized normal modes and optical slow-down are found near the band edges and at the resonant cavity center-wavelength. Standing-wave photon trapping and optical slow-down are analyzed and compared for these systems.

Polarization rotation enhancement by high-order waveguide mode coupling in magnetophotonic crystals

Inter-modal coupling in photonic bandgap optical channels in magnetic films is used to leverage the transverse-electric (TE) to transverse-magnetic (TM) mode conversion due to the Faraday Effect. The underlying mechanism is traced to the dependence of the grating coupling-constant on the modal refractive index and the mode profile of the propagating beam, a feature that arises in waveguide propagation and is not present in normal-incidence stack magnetophotonic crystals. Large changes in polarization near the band edges are observed in first and second orders as a result of the photonic bandgap structure. Extreme sensitivity to linear birefringence exists in second order.
