O$^2$-Searcher: A Searching-based Agent Model for Open-Domain Open-Ended Question Answering

Large Language Models (LLMs), despite their advancements, are fundamentally limited by their static parametric knowledge, hindering performance on tasks requiring open-domain up-to-date information. While enabling LLMs to interact with external knowledge environments is a promising solution, current efforts primarily address closed-end problems. Open-ended questions, which characterized by lacking a standard answer or providing non-unique and diverse answers, remain underexplored. To bridge this gap, we present O$^2$-Searcher, a novel search agent leveraging reinforcement learning to effectively tackle both open-ended and closed-ended questions in the open domain. O$^2$-Searcher leverages an efficient, locally simulated search environment for dynamic knowledge acquisition, effectively decoupling the external world knowledge from model's sophisticated reasoning processes. It employs a unified training mechanism with meticulously designed reward functions, enabling the agent to identify problem types and adapt different answer generation strategies. Furthermore, to evaluate performance on complex open-ended tasks, we construct O$^2$-QA, a high-quality benchmark featuring 300 manually curated, multi-domain open-ended questions with associated web page caches. Extensive experiments show that O$^2$-Searcher, using only a 3B model, significantly surpasses leading LLM agents on O$^2$-QA. It also achieves SOTA results on various closed-ended QA benchmarks against similarly-sized models, while performing on par with much larger ones.

Borodin-Kostochka conjecture for a family of $P_6$-free graphs

Borodin and Kostochka conjectured that every graph $G$ with $Δ\ge9$ satisfies $χ\le$ max $\{ω, Δ-1\}$. Gupta and Pradhan proved the Borodin-Kostochka conjecture for ($P_5$, $C_4$)-free graphs [{\em J. Appl. Math. Comp.} \textbf{65} (2021) 877-884]. In this paper, we prove the Borodin-Kostochka conjecture for ($P_6$, apple, torch)-free graphs, that is, graphs with no induced $P_6$, no induced $C_5$ with a hanging edge, and no induced $C_5$ and $C_4$ sharing exactly an induced $P_3$. This generalizes the result of Gupta and Pradhan from the perspective of allowing the existence of $P_5$.

Nonlinear Sparse Generalized Canonical Correlation Analysis for Multi-view High-dimensional Data

Motivation: Biomedical studies increasingly produce multi-view high-dimensional datasets (e.g., multi-omics) that demand integrative analysis. Existing canonical correlation analysis (CCA) and generalized CCA methods address at most two of the following three key aspects simultaneously: (i) nonlinear dependence, (ii) sparsity for variable selection, and (iii) generalization to more than two data views. There is a pressing need for CCA methods that integrate all three aspects to effectively analyze multi-view high-dimensional data. Results: We propose three nonlinear, sparse, generalized CCA methods, HSIC-SGCCA, SA-KGCCA, and TS-KGCCA, for variable selection in multi-view high-dimensional data. These methods extend existing SCCA-HSIC, SA-KCCA, and TS-KCCA from two-view to multi-view settings. While SA-KGCCA and TS-KGCCA yield multi-convex optimization problems solved via block coordinate descent, HSIC-SGCCA introduces a necessary unit-variance constraint previously ignored in SCCA-HSIC, resulting in a nonconvex, non-multiconvex problem. We efficiently address this challenge by integrating the block prox-linear method with the linearized alternating direction method of multipliers. Simulations and TCGA-BRCA data analysis demonstrate that HSIC-SGCCA outperforms competing methods in multi-view variable selection.

Density Distribution of Plasmas Resembling Dark Matter Halo Due to Ionization lag and Ambipolar Electric Field

In a spherically symmetric plasma constrained by its own gravity, the ionization degree lags behind changes in temperature and density. The ambipolar electric field accelerates ions radially and cools electrons. Ions lose energy and angular momentum in collisions with low-temperature electrons. The angular momentum of ions decreases much faster than their energy in cycles. The trajectories of ions are close to radial, and the density distribution resembles pseudo-isothermal. The velocity distributions of baryons moving outward and inward in galaxies tend to approach independent Maxwell distributions. This characteristic suppresses small-angle scattering of ions, reducing the ion collision cross-section by three orders of magnitude. In the massive galaxies, baryons can replace all dark matter.

Temperature Separation in a Vortex Tube and convection driven by vorticity

Why the temperature gradient in the vortex tube deviates significantly from the adiabatic gradient is a very important but unresolved issue in vortex tube research. In compressible fluids, the vorticity of a fluid parcel that is different from its environment can affect its own pressure or density, just like temperature. Gases near the wall have very high vorticity, and when they detach from the wall, their higher vorticity compared to the environment makes their density lower than the environment. Driven by vorticity, some fluid parcels undergo multiple collisions near the axis, achieving temperature separation.

The Interaction between Solar Convection and Rotation

The rotational energy of a fluid parcel changes during isotropic expansion or compression. In solar convection, rotation absorbs energy from convection and inhibits it, causing the motion of fluid parcels larger than a critical size to become vibration. Turbulence and inertial oscillations can cause the deformation of fluid parcels to deviate from isotropic, altering the equilibrium position of the vibration and forming motion larger than the critical size, respectively, the large granules within the granules and probably the mesogranulation. The change in rotational energy of granules during convection causes their rotation speed to differ from the local speed, forming a statistically significant solar radial differential rotation. The meridional circulation driven by radial differential rotation transports angular momentum towards the equator, forming the latitudinal differential rotation. A model constructed by combining mixing length theory explains why granule size and temperature distribution are independent of latitude, and the structure produced by this mechanism is similar to the characteristics of supergranules.

Semi-supervised Medical Image Segmentation via Query Distribution Consistency

Semi-supervised learning is increasingly popular in medical image segmentation due to its ability to leverage large amounts of unlabeled data to extract additional information. However, most existing semi-supervised segmentation methods focus only on extracting information from unlabeled data. In this paper, we propose a novel Dual KMax UX-Net framework that leverages labeled data to guide the extraction of information from unlabeled data. Our approach is based on a mutual learning strategy that incorporates two modules: 3D UX-Net as our backbone meta-architecture and KMax decoder to enhance the segmentation performance. Extensive experiments on the Atrial Segmentation Challenge dataset have shown that our method can significantly improve performance by merging unlabeled data. Meanwhile, our framework outperforms state-of-the-art semi-supervised learning methods on 10\% and 20\% labeled settings. Code located at: https://github.com/Rows21/DK-UXNet.

Graphs with girth 9 and without longer odd holes are 3-colorable

For a number $l\geq 2$, let ${\cal{G}}_l$ denote the family of graphs which have girth $2l+1$ and have no odd hole with length greater than $2l+1$. Wu, Xu and Xu conjectured that every graph in $\bigcup_{l\geq 2} {\cal{G}}_{l}$ is $3$-colorable. Chudnovsky et al., Wu et al., and Chen showed that every graph in ${\cal{G}}_2$, ${\cal{G}}_3$ and $\bigcup_{l\geq 5} {\cal{G}}_{l}$ is $3$-colorable respectively. In this paper, we prove that every graph in ${\cal{G}}_4$ is $3$-colorable. This confirms Wu, Xu and Xu's conjecture.

How Dose Rotation Effect Convection Criterion and Solar Granule Size

The rotation of granules shows thermal properties similar to the thermal motion of molecules, which effects convection criterion and solar granule size. The granular rotation generates the rotational additional pressure and corresponding rotational equivalent temperature in the spherically symmetric expansion of the granule. The rotation equivalent temperature represented by the rotational speed and the granular size is combined with the Schwarzschild criterion to obtain a new convection criterion determined jointly by the granular size, temperature gradient, and rotational speed gradient. In most of the solar convection zone, the convection is driven by the temperature gradient and suppressed by the rotational speed gradient. In the solar quiet region, the larger the granular size, the weaker the convection. The small granules with the sizes smaller than the critical size are in natural convection, while the large granules with the sizes larger than the critical size are in forced convection. In the solar active region, the larger the rotational speed, the smaller the critical size and the temperature. So sunspots have smaller granules and lower temperatures.

Rotating Turbulent Thermal Convection and Solar Differential Rotation

The expansion of the rotating fluid will change the vorticity and rotational speed of the expanding region. In turbulent thermal convection, this microscopic effect is preserved. Tracking the fluid micelles shows that the average vorticity varies with density, producing vorticity transport and angular momentum transport from the low-density area to the high-density area, forming a macroscopic vorticity difference and rotational speed difference. Taking the axial thermal convection model of the solar polar region, it can generate axial differential rotation, and the centrifugal force difference generated by the axial differential rotation drives the meridional circulation, transporting angular momentum away from the axis of rotation, forming latitudinal differential rotation. The rotation of the fluid cell generates additional pressure and change the convection criterion. The temperature gradient in the solar troposphere is higher than in the non-rotating fluid model, It's the energy source of the differential rotating.

Hybrid Representation Learning for Cognitive Diagnosis in Late-Life Depression Over 5 Years with Structural MRI

Late-life depression (LLD) is a highly prevalent mood disorder occurring in older adults and is frequently accompanied by cognitive impairment (CI). Studies have shown that LLD may increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the heterogeneity of presentation of geriatric depression suggests that multiple biological mechanisms may underlie it. Current biological research on LLD progression incorporates machine learning that combines neuroimaging data with clinical observations. There are few studies on incident cognitive diagnostic outcomes in LLD based on structural MRI (sMRI). In this paper, we describe the development of a hybrid representation learning (HRL) framework for predicting cognitive diagnosis over 5 years based on T1-weighted sMRI data. Specifically, we first extract prediction-oriented MRI features via a deep neural network, and then integrate them with handcrafted MRI features via a Transformer encoder for cognitive diagnosis prediction. Two tasks are investigated in this work, including (1) identifying cognitively normal subjects with LLD and never-depressed older healthy subjects, and (2) identifying LLD subjects who developed CI (or even AD) and those who stayed cognitively normal over five years. To the best of our knowledge, this is among the first attempts to study the complex heterogeneous progression of LLD based on task-oriented and handcrafted MRI features. We validate the proposed HRL on 294 subjects with T1-weighted MRIs from two clinically harmonized studies. Experimental results suggest that the HRL outperforms several classical machine learning and state-of-the-art deep learning methods in LLD identification and prediction tasks.

Variation of Vorticity Gradient and Formation of Sunspots

Based on the rotating turbulent thermal convection model and using the rotating equivalent temperature assumption and new convection criterion, this paper analyzed the repression of the vorticity gradient on the heat transport and explained that the formation of sunspots originated from the variation of the vorticity gradient in the solar troposphere.

Enhancing Non-mass Breast Ultrasound Cancer Classification With Knowledge Transfer

Much progress has been made in the deep neural network (DNN) based diagnosis of mass lesions breast ultrasound (BUS) images. However, the non-mass lesion is less investigated because of the limited data. Based on the insight that mass data is sufficient and shares the same knowledge structure with non-mass data of identifying the malignancy of a lesion based on the ultrasound image, we propose a novel transfer learning framework to enhance the generalizability of the DNN model for non-mass BUS with the help of mass BUS. Specifically, we train a shared DNN with combined non-mass and mass data. With the prior of different marginal distributions in input and output space, we employ two domain alignment strategies in the proposed transfer learning framework with the insight of capturing domain-specific distribution to address the issue of domain shift. Moreover, we propose a cross-domain semantic-preserve data generation module called CrossMix to recover the missing distribution between non-mass and mass data that is not presented in training data. Experimental results on an in-house dataset demonstrate that the DNN model trained with combined data by our framework achieves a 10% improvement in AUC on the malignancy prediction task of non-mass BUS compared to training directly on non-mass data.

In situ resonant photoemission and X-ray absorption study of the BiFeO3 thin film

Multiferroic bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Electronic structures of the film have been studied by in situ photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Both the Fe 2p PES and XAS spectra show that Fe ion is formally in +3 valence state. The Fe 2p and O K edge XAS spectra indicate that the oxygen octahedral crystal ligand field splits the unoccupied Fe 3d state to t2g and eg states. Valence band Fe 2p-3d resonant photoemission results indicate that hybridization between Fe 3d and O 2p plays important role in the multiferroic BiFeO3 thin films.

Controllability of open quantum systems with Kraus-map dynamics

This paper presents a constructive proof of complete kinematic state controllability of finite-dimensional open quantum systems whose dynamics are represented by Kraus maps. For any pair of states (pure or mixed) on the Hilbert space of the system, we explicitly show how to construct a Kraus map that transforms one state into another. Moreover, we prove by construction the existence of a Kraus map that transforms all initial states into a predefined target state (such a process may be used, for example, in quantum information dilution). Thus, in sharp contrast to unitary control, Kraus-map dynamics allows for the design of controls which are robust to variations in the initial state of the system. The general formalism is illustrated with examples of state-to-state Kraus transformations in a two-level system. In particular, we construct a family of non-unitary Kraus maps, which transform one pure state into another. The problem of dynamic state controllability of open quantum systems (i.e., controllability of state-to-state transformations, given a set of available dynamical resources such as coherent controls, incoherent interactions with the environment, and measurements) is also discussed.
