Universal infrared scaling of gravitational wave background spectra

We study the general infrared behavior of the power spectrum of a stochastic gravitational wave background produced by stress tensor in the form bilinear in certain dynamical degrees of freedom. We find $Ω_{\text{GW}}\propto k^3$ for a very wide class of the sources which satisfy a set of reasonable conditions. Namely, the $k^3$ scaling is universally valid when the source term is bounded in both frequency and time, is effective in a radiation-dominated stage, and for $k$ smaller than all the physical scales associated with the source, like the peak frequency, peak width, and time duration, etc. We also discuss possible violations of these conditions and their physical implications.

Large anisotropies of the stochastic gravitational wave background from cosmic domain walls

We investigate the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) from cosmic domain walls (DWs) caused by quantum fluctuations of a light scalar field $ϕ$ during inflation. Perturbations of $ϕ$ remain almost constant after leaving the Hubble horizon. The probabilities of the two domains depend on the averaged value of $ϕ$ at each large scale region, leading to large scale perturbations of DW energy density and large anisotropies in the SGWB. We find that the angular power spectrum is scale-invariant and at least of the order of $10^{-2}$, which is expected to be detected by future gravitational-wave (GW) detectors. Since we have not detected primordial GWs yet, anisotropies of the SGWB could help us to verify the rationality of inflation and determine the energy scale of inflation.

A refined trans-Planckian censorship conjecture

We propose a refined version of trans-Planckian censorship conjecture (TCC), which could be elaborated from the strong scalar weak gravity conjecture combined with some entropy bounds. In particular, no fine-tuning on the inflation model-building is required in the refined TCC, and it automatically passes the tests from those stringy examples that support the original TCC. Furthermore, our refined TCC could be consistent with hilltop eternal inflation.

Merger rate distribution of primordial black hole binaries with electric charges

We consider gravitational radiation and electromagnetic radiation from point mass binary with electric charges in a Keplerian orbit, and calculate the merger rate distribution of primordial black hole binaries with charges and a general mass function by taking into account gravitational torque and electromagnetic torque by the nearest primordial black hole. We apply the formalism to the extremal charged case and find that $α=-(m_i+m_j)^2\partial^2 \ln {\cal R}(m_i,m_j)/\partial m_i \partial m_j=12/11$, which is independent of the mass function.

Revisit on holographic complexity in two-dimensional gravity

We revisit the late-time growth rate of various holographic complexity conjectures for neutral and charged AdS black holes with single or multiple horizons in two dimensional (2D) gravity like Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity and JT-like gravity. For complexity-action conjecture, we propose an alternative resolution to the vanishing growth rate at late-time for 2D neutral black hole with multiple horizons as found in the previous studies for JT gravity. For complexity-volume conjectures, we obtain the generic forms of late-time growth rates in the context of extremal volume and Wheeler-DeWitt volume.

Primordial black holes and gravitational waves from parametric amplification of curvature perturbations

We investigate a new mechanism to create large curvature perturbations on small scales due to parameter resonance in a single-field inflationary model with a small periodic structure upon the potential. After reentering the horizon, the amplified curvature perturbations can lead to observable primordial black holes as well as stochastic gravitational waves. The mass of primordial black holes and frequency of the induced gravitational waves depend on the model parameters. The resulted primordial black hole could constitute all dark matter or a fraction of dark matter in the universe, and corresponding stochastic gravitational waves fall in the frequency band measurable for the pulsar timing array and the space-based gravitational wave detectors.

Simulating quantum field theory in curved spacetime with quantum many-body systems

This paper proposes a new general framework to build a one-to-one correspondence between quantum field theories in static 1+1 dimensional curved spacetime and quantum many-body systems. We show that a massless scalar field in an arbitrary 2-dimensional static spacetime is always equivalent to a site-dependent bosonic hopping model, while a massless Dirac field is equivalent to a site-dependent free Hubbard model or a site-dependent isotropic XY model. A possible experimental realization for such a correspondence in trapped ions system is suggested. As applications of the analogue gravity model, we show that they can be used to simulate Hawking radiation of black hole and to study its entanglement. We also show in the analogue model that black holes are most chaotic systems and the fastest scramblers in nature. We also offer a concrete example about how to get some insights about quantum many-body systems from back hole physics.

Schwinger Effect in Near-extremal Charged Black Holes in High Dimensions

We study the Schwinger effect in near-extremal nonrotating black holes in an arbitrary $D(\geq 4)$-dimensional asymptotically flat and (A)dS space. Using the near-horizon geometry $\mathrm{AdS}_2 \times \mathrm{S}^{D-2}$ of near-extremal black holes with Myers-Perry metric, we find a universal expression of the emission formula for charges that is a multiplication of the Schwinger effects in an $\mathrm{AdS}_2$ space and in a two-dimensional Rindler space. The effective temperature of an accelerated charge for the Schwinger effect is determined by the radii of the effective $\mathrm{AdS}_2$ space and $\mathrm{S}^{D-2}$ as well as the mass, charge, angular momentum of the charge and the radius of the (A)dS space. The Schwinger effect in the asymptotically flat space is more efficient and persistent for a wide range of large black holes for dimensions higher than four. The AdS (dS) boundary enhances (suppresses) the Schwinger effect than the asymptotically flat space. The Schwinger effect persists for a wide range of black holes in the AdS space and has an upper bound in the dS space.

New probe of gravity: strongly lensed gravitational wave multi-messenger approach

Strong gravitational lensing by galaxies provides us with a unique opportunity to understand the nature of gravity on galactic and extra-galactic scales. In this paper, we propose a new multimessenger approach using data from both gravitational wave (GW) and the corresponding electromagnetic (EM) counterpart to infer the constraint of the modified gravity (MG) theory denoted by the scale dependent phenomenological parameter. To demonstrate the robustness of this approach, we calculate the time-delay predictions by choosing various values of the phenomenological parameters and then compare them with that from the general relativity (GR). For the third generation ground-based GW observatory, with one typical strongly lensed GW+EM event, and assuming that the dominated error from the stellar velocity dispersions is 5\%, the GW time-delay data can distinguish an 18\% MG effect on a scale of tens of kiloparsecs with a $68\%$ confidence level. Assuming GR and a Singular Isothermal Sphere mass model, there exists a simplified consistency relationship between time-delay and imaging data. This relationship does not require for the velocity dispersion measurement, and hence can avoid major uncertainties. By using this relationship, the multimessenger approach is able to distinguish an $8\%$ MG effect. Our results show that the GW multimessenger approach can play an important role in revealing the nature of gravity on the galactic and extra-galactic scales.

An analytical approximation of the scalar spectrum in the ultra-slow-roll inflationary models

The ultra-slow-roll (USR) inflationary models predict large-amplitude scalar perturbations at small scales which can lead to the primordial black hole production and scalar-induced gravitational waves. In general scalar perturbations in the USR models can only be obtained using numerical method because the usual slow-roll approximation breaks. In this work, we propose an analytical approach to estimate the scalar spectrum which is consistent with the numerical result. We find that the USR inflationary models predict a peak with power-law slopes in the scalar spectrum and energy spectrum of gravitational waves, and we derive the expression of the spectral indexes in terms of the inflationary potential. In turn, the inflationary potential near the USR regime can be reconstructed from the negative spectral index of the gravitational wave energy spectrum.

Mass bound for primordial black hole from trans-Planckian censorship conjecture

The recently proposed trans-Planckian censorship conjecture (TCC) imposes a strong constraint on the inflationary Hubble scale, of which the upper bound could be largely relaxed by considering a noninstantaneous reheating history. In this paper we will show that, if the primordial black holes (PBHs) are formed at reentry in the radiation-dominated era from the enhanced curvature perturbations at small scales, the TCC would impose a lower bound on the PBH mass $M_\mathrm{PBH}>γ(H_\mathrm{end}/10^9\,\mathrm{GeV})^2\,M_\odot$ regardless of the details for reheating history, where $γ$ is the collapse efficiency factor and $H_\mathrm{end}$ is the Hubble scale at the end of inflation. In particular, the current open window for PBHs to make up all the cold dark matter could be totally ruled out if the inflationary Hubble scale is larger than 10 TeV. For the case of PBHs formed in an early matter-dominated era, an upper mass bound is obtained.

Pulsar Timing Array Constraints on the Induced Gravitational Waves

If the black holes detected by LIGO/VIRGO are primordial black holes (PBHs) sourcing from a large primordial curvature perturbation on small scales, the corresponding induced gravitational waves (GWs) would peak at nanohertz that is detectable by the current and future observations of pulsar timing array (PTA). In this paper we show that with the mass function estimated from the merger rate of LIGO O1 and O2 events, the induced GWs from such a curvature perturbation with a Gaussian narrow peak at some small scale would be in a seemingly mild tension with current constraints from PTA. However, if the curvature perturbation is of local-type non-Gaussianity with a non-linear parameter $f_\text{NL}\gtrsim\mathcal{O}(10)$, the tension could be relieved. Nevertheless, such an induced GWs must be detectable by the Square Kilometer Array in a decade or less.

Holographic complexity growth in a FLRW universe

We investigate the holographic complexity growth rate of a conformal field theory in a FLRW universe. We consider two ways to realize a FLRW spacetime from an Anti-de Sitter Schwarzschild geometry. The first one is obtained by introducing a new foliation of the Schwarzschild geometry such that the conformal boundary takes the FLRW form. The other one is to consider a brane universe moving in the Schwarzschild background. For each case, we compute the complexity growth rate in a closed universe and a flat universe by using both the complexity-volume and complexity-action dualities. We find that there are two kinds of contributions to the growth rate: one is from the interaction among the degrees of freedom, while the other one from the change of the spatial volume of the universe. The behaviors of the growth rate depend on the details to realize the FLRW universe as well as the holographic conjecture for the complexity. For the realization of the FLRW universe on the asymptotic boundary, the leading divergent term for the complexity growth rate obeys a volume law which is natural from the field theory viewpoint. For the brane universe scenario, the complexity-volume and complexity-action conjectures give different results for the closed universe case. A possible explanation of the inconsistency when the brane crosses the black hole horizon is given based on the Lloyd bound.

The LISA-Taiji network: precision localization of massive black hole binaries

A space-based gravitational-wave detector, LISA, consists of a triangle of three spacecrafts with a separation distance of 2.5 million kilometers in a heliocentric orbit behind the Earth. Like LISA, Taiji is compose of a triangle of three spacecrafts with a separation distance of 3 million kilometers in a heliocentric orbit ahead of the Earth. They are expected to launch in 2030-2035. Assuming a one-year overlap, we propose the LISA-Taiji network in space to fast and accurately localize the gravitational-wave sources. We use the Fisher information matrix approach to analyze the sky localization for coalescing massive black hole binaries. For an equal-mass black hole binary located at redshift of 1 with a total intrinsic mass of $10^5 M_{\odot}$, the LISA-Taiji network may achieves about four orders of magnitude improvement on the event localization region compared to an individual detector. The precision measurement of sky location from the gravitational-wave signal may completely identify the host galaxy with low redshifts prior to the final black hole merger. Such the identification of the host galaxy is helpful for the follow-up change in electromagnetic emissions of the accretion disk when the massive black hole binary merges to a single massive black hole, and enables the coalescing massive black hole binaries to be used as a standard siren.

Effects of the merger history on the merger rate density of primordial black hole binaries

We develop a formalism to calculate the merger rate density of primordial black hole binaries with a general mass function, by taking into account the merger history of primordial black holes. We apply the formalism to three specific mass functions, monochromatic, power-law and log-normal cases. In the former case, the merger rate density is dominated by the single-merger events, while in the latter two cases, the contribution of the multiple-merger events on the merger rate density can not be ignored. The effects of the merger history on the merger rate density depend on the mass function.

Probing cosmic anisotropy with GW/FRB as upgraded standard sirens

Recently it was shown that cosmic anisotropy can be well tested using either standard siren measurement of luminosity distance $d_\mathrm{L}(z)$ from gravitational-wave (GW) observation or dispersion measure ($\mathrm{DM}(z)$) from fast radio burst (FRB). It was also observed that the combined measurement of $d_\mathrm{L}(z)\cdot\mathrm{DM}(z)$ from the GW/FRB association system as suggested in some of FRB models is more effective to constrain cosmological parameters than $d_\mathrm{L}(z)$ or $\mathrm{DM}(z)$ separately due to its independence from Hubble constant. In this paper, we will show both theoretically and with simulation that, this upgraded sirens from combined GW/FRB observations could test cosmic anisotropy with a double relative sensitivity compared to the usual standard siren from GW observation alone.
