Robust Transport Signatures of Topological Superconductivity in Topological Insulator Nanowires

Finding a clear signature of topological superconductivity in transport experiments remains an outstanding challenge. In this work, we propose exploiting the unique properties of three-dimensional topological insulator nanowires to generate a normal-superconductor junction in the single-mode regime where an exactly quantized $2e^2/h$ zero-bias conductance can be observed over a wide range of realistic system parameters. This is achieved by inducing superconductivity in half of the wire, which can be tuned at will from trivial to topological with a parallel magnetic field, while a perpendicular field is used to gap out the normal part, except for two spatially separated chiral channels. The combination of chiral mode transport and perfect Andreev reflection makes the measurement robust to moderate disorder, and the quantization of conductance survives to much higher temperatures than in tunnel junction experiments. Our proposal may be understood as a variant of a Majorana interferometer which is easily realizable in experiments.

Detecting Perfect Transmission in Josephson Junctions on the Surface of Three Dimensional Topological Insulators

We consider Josephson junctions on surfaces of three dimensional topological insulator nanowires. We find that in the presence of a parallel magnetic field, short junctions on nanowires show signatures of a perfectly transmitted mode capable of supporting Majorana fermions. Such signatures appear in the current-phase relation in the presence or absence of the fermion parity anomaly, and are most striking when considering the critical current as a function of flux Φ, which exhibits a peak at Φ=h/2e. The peak sharpens in the presence of disorder at low but finite chemical potentials, and can be easily disentangled from weak-antilocalization effects. The peak also survives at small but finite temperatures, and represents a realistic and robust hallmark for perfect transmission and the emergence of Majorana physics inside the wire.

Non-Equilibrium Transport Through a Gate-Controlled Barrier on the Quantum Spin Hall Edge

The Quantum Spin Hall insulator is characterized by the presence of gapless helical edge states where the spin of the charge carriers is locked to their direction of motion. In order to probe the properties of the edge modes, we propose a design of a tunable quantum impurity realized by a local gate under an external magnetic field. Using the integrability of the impurity model, the conductance is computed for arbitrary interactions, temperatures and voltages, including the effect of Fermi liquid leads. The result can be used to infer the strength of interactions from transport experiments

Interference, Coulomb blockade, and the identification of non-abelian quantum Hall states

We examine the relation between different electronic transport phenomena in a Fabry-Perot interferometer in the fractional quantum Hall regime. In particular, we study the way these phenomena reflect the statistics of quantum Hall quasi-particles. For two series of states we examine, one abelian and one non-abelian, we show that the information that may be obtained from measurements of the lowest order interference pattern in an open Fabry-Perot interferometer is identical to the one that may be obtained from the temperature dependence of Coulomb blockade peaks in a closed interferometer. We argue that despite the similarity between the experimental signatures of the two series of states, interference and Coulomb blockade measurements are likely to be able to distinguish between abelian and non-abelian states, due to the sensitivity of the abelian states to local perturbations, to which the non-abelian states are insensitive.

Signatures of non-Abelian statistics in non-linear coulomb blockaded transport

Signatures of the non-Abelian statistics of quasi-particles in the $ν=5/2$ quantum Hall state are predicted to be present in the current-voltage characteristics of tunneling through one or two quantum Hall puddles of Landau filling $ν_a$ embedded in a bulk of filling $ν_b$ with $(ν_a,ν_b)=(2,5/2)$ and $(ν_a,ν_b)=(5/2,2)$.

Experimental signatures of non-Abelian statistics in clustered quantum Hall states

We discuss transport experiments for various non-Abelian quantum Hall states, including the Read-Rezayi series and a paired spin singlet state. We analyze the signatures of the unique characters of these states on Coulomb blockaded transport through large quantum dots. We show that the non-Abelian nature of the states manifests itself through modulations in the spacings between Coulomb blockade peaks as a function of the area of the dot. Even though the current flows only along the edge, these modulations vary with the number of quasiholes that are localized in the bulk of the dot. We discuss the effect of relaxation of edge states on the predicted Coulomb blockade patterns, and show that it may suppress the dependence on the number of bulk quasiholes. We predict the form of the lowest order interference term in a Fabry-Perot interferometer for the spin singlet state. The result indicates that this interference term is suppressed for certain values of the quantum numbers of the collective state of the bulk quasiholes, in agreement with previous findings for other clustered states belonging to the Read-Rezayi series.

Coulomb blockade as a probe for non-Abelian statistics in Read-Rezayi states

We consider a quantum dot in the regime of the quantum Hall effect, particularly in Laughlin states and non-Abelian Read-Rezayi states. We find the location of the Coulomb blockade peaks in the conductance as a function of the area of the dot and the magnetic field. When the magnetic field is fixed and the area of the dot is varied, the peaks are equally spaced for the Laughlin states. In contrast, non-Abelian statistics is reflected in modulations of the spacing which depend on the magnetic field.

Predicted signatures of p-wave superfluid phases and Majorana zero modes of fermionic atoms in RF absorption

We study the superfluid phases of quasi-2D atomic Fermi gases interacting via a p-wave Feshbach resonance. We calculate the absorption spectra of these phases under a hyperfine transition, for both non-rotating and rotating superfluids. We show that one can identify the different phases of the p-wave superfluid from the absorption spectrum. The absorption spectrum shows clear signatures of the existence of Majorana zero modes at the cores of vortices of the weakly-pairing $p_x+ip_y$ phase.

Electrons and Phonons on the Square Fibonacci Tiling

We study the Schroedinger equation for an off-diagonal tight-binding hamiltonian, as well as the equations of motion for out-of-plane vibrations, on the separable square Fibonacci quasicrystal. We discuss the nature of the spectra and wave functions of the solutions.
