Sublattice Interference in the Kagome Hubbard Model

We study the electronic phases of the kagome Hubbard model (KHM) in the weak coupling limit around van Hove filling. Through an analytic renormalization group analysis, we find that there exists a sublattice interference mechanism where the kagome sublattice structure affects the character of the Fermi surface instabilities. It leads to major suppression of Tc for d+id superconductivity in the KHM and causes an anomalous increase of Tc upon addition of longer-range Hubbard interactions. We conjecture that the suppression of conventional Fermi liquid instabilities makes the KHM a prototype candidate for hosting exotic electronic states of matter at intermediate coupling.

Generalizations of Perelomov's identity on the completeness of coherent states

We proof the Perelomov identity for arbitrary 2D lattices using Fourier transformation. We further generalize it to situations where the origin does not coincide with a lattice site, and where the form of the exponential factor is reminiscent of magnetic wave functions in uniaxial rather than symmetric gauge.

Exotic d-wave superconductivity in strongly hole doped K(x)Ba(1-x)Fe2As2

We investigate the superconducting phase in the K(x)Ba(1-x)Fe2As2 122 compounds from moderate to strong hole-doping regimes. Using functional renormalization group, we show that while the system develops a nodeless anisotropic s+- order parameter in the moderately doped regime, gapping out the electron pockets at strong hole doping drives the system into a nodal cos (kx) cos (ky) d-wave superconducting state. This is in agreement with recent experimental evidence from measurements on KFe2As2 which see a nodal order parameter in the extreme doping regime. The magnetic instability is strongly suppressed. The case of only hole pockets present is argued to be structurally similar to the case of only electron pockets present as indicated for KxFe2Se2.

Parent Hamiltonian for the non-Abelian chiral spin liquid

We construct a parent Hamiltonian for the family of non-Abelian chiral spin liquids proposed recently by two of us [PRL 102, 207203 (2009)], which includes the Abelian chiral spin liquid proposed by Kalmeyer and Laughlin, as the special case S=1/2. As we use a circular disk geometry with an open boundary, both the annihilation operators we identify and the Hamiltonians we construct from these are exact only in the thermodynamic limit.

Gaffnian holonomy through the coherent state method

We analyze the effect of exchanging quasiholes described by Gaffnian quantum Hall trial state wave functions. This exchange is carried out via adiabatic transport using the recently developed coherent state Ansatz. We argue that our Ansatz is justified if the Gaffnian parent Hamiltonian has a charge gap, even though it is gapless to neutral excitations, and may therefore properly describe the adiabatic transport of Gaffnian quasiholes. For nonunitary states such as the Gaffnian, the result of adiabatic transport cannot agree with the monodromies of the conformal block wave functions, and may or may not lead to well-defined anyon statistics. Using the coherent state Ansatz, we find two unitary solutions for the statistics, one of which agrees with the statistics of the non-Abelian spin-singlet state by Ardonne and Schoutens.

A family of spin-S chain representations of SU(2)_k Wess-Zumino-Witten models

We investigate a family of spin-S chain Hamiltonians recently introduced by one of us. For S=1/2, it corresponds to the Haldane-Shastry model. For general spin S, we find indication that the low-energy theory of these spin chains is described by the SU(2)_k Wess-Zumino-Witten model with coupling k=2S. In particular, we investigate the S=1 model whose ground state is given by a Pfaffian for even number of sites N. We reconcile aspects of the spectrum of the Hamiltonian for arbitrary N with trial states obtained by Schwinger projection of two Haldane-Shastry chains.

Competing many-body instabilities and unconventional superconductivity in graphene

The band structure of graphene exhibits van Hove singularities (VHS) at doping x=+- 1/8 away from the Dirac point. Near the VHS, interactions effects, enhanced due to the large density of states, can give rise to various many-body phases at experimentally accessible temperatures. We study the competition between different many-body instabilities in graphene using functional renormalization group (FRG). We predict a rich phase diagram, which, depending on long range hopping as well as screening strength and absolute scale of the Coulomb interaction, contains a d+id-wave superconducting (SC) phase, or a spin density wave phase at the VHS. The d+id state is expected to exhibit quantized charge and spin Hall response, as well as Majorana modes bound to vortices. In the vicinity of the VHS, we find singlet d+id-wave as well as triplet f-wave SC phases.

Mechanism for a Pairing State with Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking in Iron-Based Superconductors

The multipocket Fermi surfaces of iron-based superconductors promote pairing states with both s_{+-}-wave and d_{x^2-y^2}-wave symmetry. We argue that the competition between these two order parameters could lead to a time-reversal-symmetry breaking state with s+id-pairing symmetry in the iron-based superconductors, and propose serveral scenarios in which this phase may be found. To understand the emergence of such a pairing state on a more rigorous footing, we start from a microscopic 5-orbital description representative for the pnictides. Using a combined approach of functional renormalization group and mean-field analysis, we identify the microscopic parameters of the s+id-pairing state. There, we find the most promising region for s+id-pairing in the electron doped regime with an enhanced pnictogen height.

Fractional spin liquid hierarchy for spin S antiferromagnets

We propose a hierarchy of spin liquids with spin S, which are generated via a Schwinger boson projection from 2S (Abelian) chiral spin liquids with S=1/2. We argue that the P and T invariant liquids we construct for integer spin S support SU(2) level k=S non-Abelian statistics. We conjecture that these spin liquids serve as paradigms for antiferromagnets which are disordered through mobile charge carriers.

Finite-temperature phase diagram of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model

We discuss the finite-temperature phase diagram of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model on the hexagonal lattice, which has been suggested to describe the spin-orbital exchange of the effective spin-1/2 momenta in the Mott insulating Iridate Na2IrO3. At zero-temperature this model exhibits magnetically ordered states well beyond the isotropic Heisenberg limit as well as an extended gapless spin liquid phase around the highly anisotropic Kitaev limit. Using a pseudofermion functional renormalization group (RG) approach, we extract both the Curie-Weiss scale and the critical ordering scale (for the magnetically ordered states) from the RG flow of the magnetic susceptibility. The Curie-Weiss scale switches sign -- indicating a transition of the dominant exchange from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic -- deep in the magnetically ordered regime. For the latter we find no significant frustration, i.e. a substantial suppression of the ordering scale with regard to the Curie-Weiss scale. We discuss our results in light of recent experimental susceptibility measurements for Na2IrO3.

Robustness of s-wave Pairing in Electron-Overdoped $\text{A}_{1-y}\text{Fe}_{2-x}\text{Se}_2$

Using self consistent mean field and functional renormalization group approaches we show that s-wave pairing symmetry is robust in the heavily electron-doped iron chalcogenides $(\text{K, Cs}) \text{Fe}_{2-x}\text{Se}_2 $. This is because in these materials the leading antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange coupling is between next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) sites while the nearest neighbor (NN) magnetic exchange coupling is ferromagnetic (FM). This is different from the iron pnictides, where the NN magnetic exchange coupling is AFM and leads to strong competition between s-wave and d-wave pairing in the electron overdoped region. Our finding of a robust s-wave pairing in $(\text{K, Cs}) \text{Fe}_{2-x}\text{Se}_2$ differs from the d-wave pairing result obtained by other theories where non-local bare interaction terms and the NNN $J_2$ term are underestimated. Detecting the pairing symmetry in $(\text{K, Cs}) \text{Fe}_{2-x}\text{Se}_2 $ may hence provide important insights regarding the mechanism of superconducting pairing in iron based superconductors.

From density functional theory to the functional renormalization group: superconductivity in the iron pnictide LiFeAs

A combined density functional theory and functional renormalization group method is introduced which takes into account orbital-dependent interaction parameters to derive the effective low-energy theory of weakly to intermediately correlated Fermi systems. As an application, the competing fluctuations in LiFeAs are investigated, which is the main representative of the 111 class of iron pnictides displaying no magnetic order, but superconductivity, for the parent compound. The superconducting order parameter is found to be of s+- type driven by collinear antiferromagnetic fluctuations. They eventually exceed the ferromagnetic fluctuations stemming from the small hole pocket at the Gamma point, as the system flows to low energies.

Magnetic order and paramagnetic phases in the quantum J1-J2-J3 honeycomb model

Recent work shows that a quantum spin liquid can arise in realistic fermionic models on a honeycomb lattice. We study the quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg honeycomb model, considering couplings J1, J2, and J3 up to third nearest neighbors. We use an unbiased pseudofermion functional renormalization group method to compute the magnetic susceptibility and determine the ordered and disordered states of the model. Aside from antiferromagnetic, collinear, and spiral order domains, we find a large paramagnetic region at intermediate J2 coupling. For larger J2 within this domain, we find a strong tendency to staggered dimer ordering, while the remaining paramagnetic regime for low J2 shows only weak plaquet and staggered dimer response. We suggest this regime to be a promising region to look for quantum spin liquid states when charge fluctuations would be included.

Thermodynamic signatures of a fractionalized Fermi liquid

Several heavy-fermion metals display a quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic metal to a heavy Fermi liquid. In some materials, however, recent experiments seem to find that the heavy Fermi liquid phase can be directly tuned into a non-Fermi liquid phase without apparent magnetic order. We analyze a candidate state for this scenario where the local moment system forms a spin liquid with gapless fermionic excitations. We discuss the thermal conductivity and spin susceptibility of this fractionalized state both in two and, in particular, three spatial dimensions for different temperature regimes. We derive a variational functional for the thermal conductivity and solve it with a variational ansatz dictated by Keldysh formalism. In sufficiently clean samples and for an appropriate temperature window, we find that thermal transport is dominated by the spinon contribution which can be detected by a characteristic maximum in the Wiedemann-Franz ratio. For the spin susceptibility, the conduction electron Pauli paramagnetism is much smaller than the spinon contribution whose temperature dependence in three dimensions is logarithmically enhanced as compared to the Fermi liquid result.

Order-Parameter Anisotropies in the Pnictides - An Optimization Principle for Multi-Band Superconductivity

Using general arguments of an optimization taking place between the pair wave function and the repulsive part of the electron-electron interaction, we analyze the superconducting gap in materials with multiple Fermi-surface (FS) pockets, with exemplary application to two proto-type ferropnictide setups. On the basis of functional renormalization group (FRG) calculations for a wide parameter span of the bare interactions, we show that the symmetry of the gap and the nodal versus nodeless behavior is driven by this optimization requirement.

Decomposition of fractional quantum Hall states: New symmetries and approximations

We provide a detailed description of a new symmetry structure of the monomial (Slater) expansion coefficients of bosonic (fermionic) fractional quantum Hall states first obtained in Ref. 1, which we now extend to spin-singlet states. We show that the Haldane-Rezayi spin-singlet state can be obtained without exact diagonalization through a differential equation method that we conjecture to be generic to other FQH model states. The symmetry rules in Ref. 1 as well as the ones we obtain for the spin singlet states allow us to build approximations of FQH states that exhibit increasing overlap with the exact state (as a function of system size). We show that these overlaps reach unity in the thermodynamic limit even though our approximation omits more than half of the Hilbert space. We show that the product rule is valid for any FQH state which can be written as an expectation value of parafermionic operators.

Functional renormalization group for the anisotropic triangular antiferromagnet

We present a functional renormalization group scheme that allows us to calculate frustrated magnetic systems of arbitrary lattice geometry beyond O(200) sites from first principles. We study the magnetic susceptibility of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin-1/2 Heisenberg model ground state on the spatially anisotropic triangular lattice, where J' denotes the coupling strength of the intrachain bonds along one lattice direction and J the coupling strength of the interchain bonds. We identify three distinct phases of the Heisenberg model. Increasing xi=J'/J from the effective square lattice xi=0, we find an AFM Neel order to spiral order transition at xi_{c1} = 0.6-0.7, with indication to be of second order. In addition, above the isotropic point at xi_{c2} = 1.1, we find a first order transition to a magnetically disordered phase with collinear AFM stripe fluctuations.

A minimal model of quantized conductance in interacting ballistic quantum wires

We review what we consider to be the minimal model of quantized conductance in a finite interacting quantum wire. Our approach utilizes the simplicity of the equation of motion description to both deal with general spatially dependent interactions and finite wire geometry. We emphasize the role of two different kinds of boundary conditions, one associated with local "chemical" equilibrium in the sense of Landauer, the other associated with screening in the proximity of the Fermi liquid metallic leads. The relation of our analysis to other approaches to this problem is clarified. We then use our formalism to derive a Drude type expression for the low frequency AC-conductance of the finite wire with general interaction profile.
