Remarks on criteria for achieving the optimal diversity-multiplexing gain trade-off

In this short note we will prove that non-vanishing determinant (NVD) criterion is not enough for an asymmetric space-time block code (STBC) to achieve the optimal diversity-multiplexing gain trade-off (DMT). This result is in contrast to the recent result made by Srinath and Rajan. In order to clarify the issue further the approximately universality criterion by Tavildar and Viswanath is translated into language of lattice theory and some conjectures are given.

Inverse Determinant Sums and Connections Between Fading Channel Information Theory and Algebra

This work concentrates on the study of inverse determinant sums, which arise from the union bound on the error probability, as a tool for designing and analyzing algebraic space-time block codes. A general framework to study these sums is established, and the connection between asymptotic growth of inverse determinant sums and the diversity-multiplexing gain trade-off is investigated. It is proven that the growth of the inverse determinant sum of a division algebra-based space-time code is completely determined by the growth of the unit group. This reduces the inverse determinant sum analysis to studying certain asymptotic integrals in Lie groups. Using recent methods from ergodic theory, a complete classification of the inverse determinant sums of the most well known algebraic space-time codes is provided. The approach reveals an interesting and tight relation between diversity-multiplexing gain trade-off and point counting in Lie groups.

Construction of MIMO MAC Codes Achieving the Pigeon Hole Bound

This paper provides a general construction method for multiple-input multiple-output multiple access channel codes (MIMO MAC codes) that have so called generalized full rank property. The achieved constructions give a positive answer to the question whether it is generally possible to reach the so called pigeon hole bound, that is an upper bound for the decay of determinants of MIMO-MAC channel codes.

An algebraic look into MAC-DMT of lattice space-time codes

In this paper we are concentrating on the diversity-multiplexing gain trade-off (DMT) of some space-time lattice codes. First we give a DMT bound for lattice codes having restricted dimension. We then recover the well known results of the DMT of algebraic number field codes and the Alamouti code by using the union bound and see that these codes do achieve the previously mentioned bound. During our analysis interesting connections to the Dedekind's zeta-function and to the unit group of algebraic number fields are revealed. Finally we prove that both the number field codes and Alamouti code are in some sense optimal codes in the multiple access channel (MAC).

Diversity-multiplexing Gain Tradeoff: a Tool in Algebra?

Since the invention of space-time coding numerous algebraic methods have been applied in code design. In particular algebraic number theory and central simple algebras have been on the forefront of the research. In this paper we are turning the table and asking whether information theory can be used as a tool in algebra. We will first derive some corollaries from diversity-multiplexing gain (DMT) bounds by Zheng and Tse and later show how these results can be used to analyze the unit group of orders of certain division algebras. The authors do not claim that the algebraic results are new, but we do find that this interesting relation between algebra and information theory is quite surprising and worth pointing out.

Algebraic Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Space-Time Codes for Digital Broadcasting in SFN

Lately, different methods for broadcasting future digital TV in a single frequency network (SFN) have been under an intensive study. To improve the transmission to also cover suburban and rural areas, a hybrid scheme may be used. In hybrid transmission, the signal is transmitted both from a satellite and from a terrestrial site. In 2008, Y. Nasser et al. proposed to use a double layer 3D space-time (ST) code in the hybrid 4 x 2 MIMO transmission of digital TV. In this paper, alternative codes with simpler structure are proposed for the 4 x 2 hybrid system, and new codes are constructed for the 3 x 2 system. The performance of the proposed codes is analyzed through computer simulations, showing a significant improvement over simple repetition schemes. The proposed codes prove in addition to be very robust in the presence of power imbalance between the two sites.

Fast-Decodable Asymmetric Space-Time Codes from Division Algebras

Multiple-input double-output (MIDO) codes are important in the near-future wireless communications, where the portable end-user device is physically small and will typically contain at most two receive antennas. Especially tempting is the 4 x 2 channel due to its immediate applicability in the digital video broadcasting (DVB). Such channels optimally employ rate-two space-time (ST) codes consisting of (4 x 4) matrices. Unfortunately, such codes are in general very complex to decode, hence setting forth a call for constructions with reduced complexity. Recently, some reduced complexity constructions have been proposed, but they have mainly been based on different ad hoc methods and have resulted in isolated examples rather than in a more general class of codes. In this paper, it will be shown that a family of division algebra based MIDO codes will always result in at least 37.5% worst-case complexity reduction, while maintaining full diversity and, for the first time, the non-vanishing determinant (NVD) property. The reduction follows from the fact that, similarly to the Alamouti code, the codes will be subsets of matrix rings of the Hamiltonian quaternions, hence allowing simplified decoding. At the moment, such reductions are among the best known for rate-two MIDO codes. Several explicit constructions are presented and shown to have excellent performance through computer simulations.

Remarks on the Criteria of Constructing MIMO-MAC DMT Optimal Codes

In this paper we investigate the criteria proposed by Coronel et al. for constructing MIMO MAC-DMT optimal codes over several classes of fading channels. We first give a counterexample showing their DMT result is not correct when the channel is frequency-selective. For the case of symmetric MIMO-MAC flat fading channels, their DMT result reduces to exactly the same as that derived by Tse et al., and we therefore focus on their criteria for constructing MAC-DMT optimal codes, especially when the number of receive antennas is sufficiently large. In such case, we show their criterion is equivalent to requiring the codes of any subset of users to satisfy a joint non-vanishing determinant criterion when the system operates in the antenna pooling regime. Finally an upper bound on the product of minimum eigenvalues of the difference matrices is provided, and is used to show any MIMO-MAC codes satisfying their criterion can possibly exist only when the target multiplexing gain is small.

On the Decay of the Determinants of Multiuser MIMO Lattice Codes

In a recent work, Coronel et al. initiated the study of the relation between the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) performance of a multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) lattice code and the rate of the decay of the determinants of the code matrix as a function of the size of the signal constellation. In this note, we state a simple general upper bound on the decay function and study the promising code proposed by Badr and Belfiore in close detail. We derive a lower bound to its decay function based on a classical theorem due to Liouville. The resulting bound is applicable also to other codes with constructions based on algebraic number theory. Further, we study an example sequence of small determinants within the Badr-Belfiore code and derive a tighter upper bound to its decay function. The upper bound has certain conjectural asymptotic uncertainties, whence we also list the exact bound for several finite data rates.
