Dual adjunctions between enriched algebraic categories

Working in the setting of enriched algebraic theories for a system of arities, we study several aspects of dual adjunctions between enriched algebraic categories, which we call algebraic dual adjunctions. Firstly, we generalize Freyd's theorem on contravariant algebra-valued right-adjoint functors to this setting. Secondly, we establish a biequivalence between a 2-category of algebraic dual adjunctions and a locally discrete 2-category of bifold algebras, in a sense defined in prior work of the author. Thirdly, we define special classes of algebraic dual adjunctions that we call (left- and right-)stable, in which certain free objects are reflexive, and we establish biequivalences between these and special classes of bifold algebras defined in terms of commutants in prior work of the author. Fourthly, we show that every algebra for an enriched algebraic theory canonically induces left- and right-stable algebraic dual adjunctions, and we establish a biequivalence between such algebras and left- (or right-)stable algebraic dual adjunctions, and also between saturated algebras and stable algebraic dual adjunctions. We also discuss examples of algebraic dual adjunctions, including dualization of internal modules, Pontryagin and Binz-Butzmann duality, dualization of internal affine spaces and convex spaces, dualization of semilattices, dualization of complete sup-lattices, and dualization of abelian groups with reference to a theorem of Ehrenfeucht and Łoś.

V-graded categories and V-W-bigraded categories: Functor categories and bifunctors over non-symmetric bases

In the well-known settings of category theory enriched in a monoidal category V, the use of V-enriched functor categories and bifunctors demands that V be equipped with a symmetry, braiding, or duoidal structure. In this paper, we establish a theory of functor categories and bifunctors that is applicable relative to an arbitrary monoidal category V and applies both to V-enriched categories and also to V-actegories. We accomplish this by working in the setting of (V-)graded categories, which generalize both V-enriched categories and V-actegories and were introduced by Wood under the name "large V-categories". We develop a general framework for graded functor categories and graded bifunctors taking values in bigraded categories, noting that V itself is canonically bigraded. We show that V-graded modules (or profunctors) are examples of graded bifunctors and that V-graded presheaf categories are examples of V-graded functor categories. In the special case where V is normal duoidal, we compare the above graded concepts with the enriched bifunctors and functor categories of Garner and López Franco. Along the way, we study several foundational aspects of graded categories, including a contravariant change of base process for graded categories and a formalism of commutative diagrams in graded categories that arises by freely embedding each V-graded category into a V-actegory.

Enriched structure-semantics adjunctions and monad-theory equivalences for subcategories of arities

Lawvere's algebraic theories, or Lawvere theories, underpin a categorical approach to general algebra, and Lawvere's adjunction between semantics and algebraic structure leads to an equivalence between Lawvere theories and finitary monads on the category of sets. Several authors have transported these ideas to a variety of settings, including contexts of category theory enriched in a symmetric monoidal closed category. In this paper, we develop a general axiomatic framework for enriched structure-semantics adjunctions and monad-theory equivalences for subcategories of arities. Not only do we establish a simultaneous generalization of the monad-theory equivalences previously developed in the settings of Lawvere (1963), Linton (1966), Dubuc (1970), Borceux-Day (1980), Power (1999), Nishizawa-Power (2009), Lack-Rosický (2011), Lucyshyn-Wright (2016), and Bourke-Garner (2019), but also we establish a structure-semantics theorem that generalizes those given in the first four of these works while applying also to the remaining five, for which such a result has not previously been developed. Furthermore, we employ our axiomatic framework to establish broad new classes of examples of enriched monad-theory equivalences and structure-semantics adjunctions for subcategories of arities enriched in locally bounded closed categories, including various convenient closed categories that are relevant in topology and analysis and need not be locally presentable.

Diagrammatic presentations of enriched monads and varieties for a subcategory of arities

The theory of presentations of enriched monads was developed by Kelly, Power, and Lack, following classic work of Lawvere, and has been generalized to apply to subcategories of arities in recent work of Bourke-Garner and the authors. We argue that, while theoretically elegant and structurally fundamental, such presentations of enriched monads can be inconvenient to construct directly in practice, as they do not directly match the definitional procedures used in constructing many categories of enriched algebraic structures via operations and equations. Retaining the above approach to presentations as a key technical underpinning, we establish a flexible formalism for directly describing enriched algebraic structure borne by an object of a $V$-category $C$ in terms of parametrized $J$-ary operations and diagrammatic equations for a suitable subcategory of arities $J \hookrightarrow C$. On this basis we introduce the notions of diagrammatic $J$-presentation and $J$-ary variety, and we show that the category of $J$-ary varieties is dually equivalent to the category of $J$-ary $V$-monads. We establish several examples of diagrammatic $J$-presentations and $J$-ary varieties relevant in both mathematics and theoretical computer science, and we define the sum and tensor product of diagrammatic $J$-presentations. We show that both $J$-relative monads and $J$-pretheories give rise to diagrammatic $J$-presentations that directly describe their algebras. Using diagrammatic $J$-presentations as a method of proof, we generalize the pretheories-monads adjunction of Bourke and Garner beyond the locally presentable setting. Lastly, we generalize Birkhoff's Galois connection between classes of algebras and sets of equations to the above setting.

Centralizer clones relative to a strong limit cardinal

The notion of commutation of operations in universal algebra leads to the concept of centralizer clone and gives rise to a well-known class of problems that we call centralizer problems, in which one seeks to determine whether a given set of operations arises as a centralizer or, equivalently, coincides with its own double centralizer. Centralizer clones and centralizer problems in universal algebra have been studied by several authors, with early contributions by Cohn, Kuznecov, Danil'čenko, and Harnau. In this paper, we work within a generalized setting of infinitary universal algebra relative to a regular cardinal $α$, thus allowing operations whose arities are sets of cardinality less than $α$, and we study a notion of centralizer clone that is defined relative to $α$. In this setting, we establish several new characterizations of centralizer clones and double centralizer clones, with special attention to the case in which $α$ is a strong limit cardinal, and we discuss how these results enable a novel method for treating centralizer problems. We apply these results to establish positive solutions to finitary and infinitary centralizer problems for several specific classes of algebraic structures, including vector spaces, free actions of a group, and free actions of a free monoid.

Bifold algebras and commutants for enriched algebraic theories

Commuting pairs of algebraic structures on a set have been studied by several authors and may be described equivalently as algebras for the tensor product of Lawvere theories, or more basically as certain bifunctors that here we call bifold algebras. The much less studied notion of commutant for Lawvere theories was first introduced by Wraith and generalizes the notion of centralizer clone in universal algebra. Working in the general setting of enriched algebraic theories for a system of arities, we study the interaction of the concepts of bifold algebra and commutant. We show that the notion of commutant arises via a universal construction in a two-sided fibration of bifold algebras over various theories. On this basis, we study special classes of bifold algebras that are related to commutants, introducing the notions of commutant bifold algebra and balanced bifold algebra. We establish several adjunctions and equivalences among these categories of bifold algebras and related categories of algebras over various theories, including commutative, contracommutative, saturated, and balanced algebras. We also survey and develop examples of commutant bifold algebras, including examples that employ Pontryagin duality and a theorem of Ehrenfeucht and Łoś on reflexive abelian groups. Along the way, we develop a functorial treatment of fundamental aspects of bifold algebras and commutants, including tensor products of theories and the equivalence of bifold algebras and commuting pairs of algebras. Because we work relative to a (possibly large) system of arities in a closed category $\mathcal{V}$, our main results are applicable to arbitrary $\mathcal{V}$-monads on a finitely complete $\mathcal{V}$, the enriched theories of Borceux and Day, the enriched Lawvere theories of Power relative to a regular cardinal, and other notions of algebraic theory.

Locally bounded enriched categories

We define and study the notion of a locally bounded enriched category over a (locally bounded) symmetric monoidal closed category, generalizing the locally bounded ordinary categories of Freyd and Kelly. In addition to proving several general results for constructing examples of locally bounded enriched categories and locally bounded closed categories, we demonstrate that locally bounded enriched categories admit fully enriched analogues of many of the convenient results enjoyed by locally bounded ordinary categories. In particular, we prove full enrichments of Freyd and Kelly's reflectivity and local boundedness results for orthogonal subcategories and categories of models for sketches and theories. We also provide characterization results for locally bounded enriched categories in terms of enriched presheaf categories, and we show that locally bounded enriched categories admit useful adjoint functor theorems and a representability theorem. We also define and study the notion of $α$-bounded-small weighted limit enriched in a locally $α$-bounded closed category, which parallels Kelly's notion of $α$-small weighted limit enriched in a locally $α$-presentable closed category, and we show that enriched categories of models of $α$-bounded-small weighted limit theories are locally $α$-bounded.

Presentations and algebraic colimits of enriched monads for a subcategory of arities

We develop a general framework for studying signatures, presentations, and algebraic colimits of enriched monads for a subcategory of arities, even when the base of enrichment $\mathcal{V}$ is not locally presentable. When $\mathcal{V}$ satisfies the weaker requirement of local boundedness, the resulting framework is sufficiently general to apply to the $Φ$-accessible monads of Lack and Rosický and the $\mathcal{J}$-ary monads of the first author, while even without local boundedness our framework captures in full generality the presentations of strongly finitary monads of Lack and Kelly as well as Wolff's presentations of $\mathcal{V}$-categories by generators and relations. Given any small subcategory of arities $j : \mathcal{J} \hookrightarrow \mathcal{C}$ in an enriched category $\mathcal{C}$, satisfying certain assumptions, we prove results on the existence of free $\mathcal{J}$-ary monads, the monadicity of $\mathcal{J}$-ary monads over $\mathcal{J}$-signatures, and the existence of algebraic colimits of $\mathcal{J}$-ary monads. We study a notion of presentation for $\mathcal{J}$-ary monads and show that every such presentation presents a $\mathcal{J}$-ary monad. Certain of our results generalize earlier results of Kelly, Power, and Lack for finitary enriched monads in the locally finitely presentable setting, as well as analogous results of Kelly and Lack for strongly finitary monads on cartesian closed categories. Our main results hold for a wide class of subcategories of arities in locally bounded enriched categories.

Tangent Categories from the Coalgebras of Differential Categories

Following the pattern from linear logic, the coKleisli category of a differential category is a Cartesian differential category. What then is the coEilenberg-Moore category of a differential category? The answer is a tangent category! A key example arises from the opposite of the category of Abelian groups with the free exponential modality. The coEilenberg-Moore category, in this case, is the opposite of the category of commutative rings. That the latter is a tangent category captures a fundamental aspect of both algebraic geometry and Synthetic Differential Geometry. The general result applies when there are no negatives and thus encompasses examples arising from combinatorics and computer science. This is an extended version of a conference paper for CSL2020.

On the geometric notion of connection and its expression in tangent categories

Tangent categories provide an axiomatic approach to key structural aspects of differential geometry that exist not only in the classical category of smooth manifolds but also in algebraic geometry, homological algebra, computer science, and combinatorics. Generalizing the notion of (linear) connection on a smooth vector bundle, Cockett and Cruttwell have defined a notion of connection on a differential bundle in an arbitrary tangent category. Herein, we establish equivalent formulations of this notion of connection that reduce the amount of specified structure required. Further, one of our equivalent formulations substantially reduces the number of axioms imposed, and others provide useful abstract conceptualizations of connections. In particular, we show that a connection on a differential bundle E over M is equivalently given by a single morphism K that induces a suitable decomposition of TE as a biproduct. We also show that a connection is equivalently given by a vertical connection K for which a certain associated diagram is a limit diagram.

A simplicial foundation for differential and sector forms in tangent categories

Tangent categories provide an axiomatic framework for understanding various tangent bundles and differential operations that occur in differential geometry, algebraic geometry, abstract homotopy theory, and computer science. Previous work has shown that one can formulate and prove a wide variety of definitions and results from differential geometry in an arbitrary tangent category, including generalizations of vector fields and their Lie bracket, vector bundles, and connections. In this paper we investigate differential and sector forms in tangent categories. We show that sector forms in any tangent category have a rich structure: they form a symmetric cosimplicial object. This appears to be a new result in differential geometry, even for smooth manifolds. In the category of smooth manifolds, the resulting complex of sector forms has a subcomplex isomorphic to the de Rham complex of differential forms, which may be identified with alternating sector forms. Further, the symmetric cosimplicial structure on sector forms arises naturally through a new equational presentation of symmetric cosimplicial objects, which we develop herein.

Commutants for enriched algebraic theories and monads

We define and study a notion of $\textit{commutant}$ for $\mathcal{V}$-enriched $\mathcal{J}$-algebraic theories for a system of arities $\mathcal{J}$, recovering the usual notion of commutant or centralizer of a subring as a special case alongside Wraith's notion of commutant for Lawvere theories as well as a notion of commutant for $\mathcal{V}$-monads on a symmetric monoidal closed category $\mathcal{V}$. This entails a thorough study of commutation and Kronecker products of operations in $\mathcal{J}$-theories. In view of the equivalence between $\mathcal{J}$-theories and $\mathcal{J}$-ary monads we reconcile this notion of commutation with Kock's notion of commutation of cospans of monads and, in particular, the notion of commutative monad. We obtain notions of $\mathcal{J}$-$\textit{ary commutant}$ and $\textit{absolute commutant}$ for $\mathcal{J}$-ary monads, and we show that for finitary monads on Set the resulting notions of finitary commutant and absolute commutant coincide. We examine the relation of the notion of commutant to both the notion of $\textit{codensity monad}$ and the notion of $\textit{algebraic structure}$ in the sense of Lawvere.

Functional distribution monads in functional-analytic contexts

We give a general categorical construction that yields several monads of measures and distributions as special cases, alongside several monads of filters. The construction takes place within a categorical setting for generalized functional analysis, called a $\textit{functional-analytic context}$, formulated in terms of a given monad or algebraic theory $\mathcal{T}$ enriched in a closed category $\mathcal{V}$. By employing the notion of $\textit{commutant}$ for enriched algebraic theories and monads, we define the $\textit{functional distribution monad}$ associated to a given functional-analytic context. We establish certain general classes of examples of functional-analytic contexts in cartesian closed categories $\mathcal{V}$, wherein $\mathcal{T}$ is the theory of $R$-modules or $R$-affine spaces for a given ring or rig $R$ in $\mathcal{V}$, or the theory of $\textit{$R$-convex spaces}$ for a given preordered ring $R$ in $\mathcal{V}$. We prove theorems characterizing the functional distribution monads in these contexts, and on this basis we establish several specific examples of functional distribution monads.

Convex spaces, affine spaces, and commutants for algebraic theories

Certain axiomatic notions of $\textit{affine space}$ over a ring and $\textit{convex space}$ over a preordered ring are examples of the notion of $\mathcal{T}$-algebra for an algebraic theory $\mathcal{T}$ in the sense of Lawvere. Herein we study the notion of $\textit{commutant}$ for Lawvere theories that was defined by Wraith and generalizes the notion of $\textit{centralizer clone}$. We focus on the Lawvere theory of $\textit{left $R$-affine spaces}$ for a ring or rig $R$, proving that this theory can be described as a commutant of the theory of pointed right $R$-modules. Further, we show that for a wide class of rigs $R$ that includes all rings, these theories are commutants of one another in the full finitary theory of $R$ in the category of sets. We define $\textit{left $R$-convex spaces}$ for a preordered ring $R$ as left affine spaces over the positive part $R_+$ of $R$. We show that for any $\textit{firmly archimedean}$ preordered algebra $R$ over the dyadic rationals, the theories of left $R$-convex spaces and pointed right $R_+$-modules are commutants of one another within the full finitary theory of $R_+$ in the category of sets. Applied to the ring of real numbers $\mathbb{R}$, this result shows that the connection between convex spaces and pointed $\mathbb{R}_+$-modules that is implicit in the integral representation of probability measures is a perfect `duality' of algebraic theories.

Enriched algebraic theories and monads for a system of arities

Under a minimum of assumptions, we develop in generality the basic theory of universal algebra in a symmetric monoidal closed category $\mathcal{V}$ with respect to a specified system of arities $j:\mathcal{J} \hookrightarrow \mathcal{V}$. Lawvere's notion of algebraic theory generalizes to this context, resulting in the notion of single-sorted $\mathcal{V}$-enriched $\mathcal{J}$-cotensor theory, or $\mathcal{J}$-theory for short. For suitable choices of $\mathcal{V}$ and $\mathcal{J}$, such $\mathcal{J}$-theories include the enriched algebraic theories of Borceux and Day, the enriched Lawvere theories of Power, the equational theories of Linton's 1965 work, and the $\mathcal{V}$-theories of Dubuc, which are recovered by taking $\mathcal{J} = \mathcal{V}$ and correspond to arbitrary $\mathcal{V}$-monads on $\mathcal{V}$. We identify a modest condition on $j$ that entails that the $\mathcal{V}$-category of $\mathcal{T}$-algebras exists and is monadic over $\mathcal{V}$ for every $\mathcal{J}$-theory $\mathcal{T}$, even when $\mathcal{T}$ is not small and $\mathcal{V}$ is neither complete nor cocomplete. We show that $j$ satisfies this condition if and only if $j$ presents $\mathcal{V}$ as a free cocompletion of $\mathcal{J}$ with respect to the weights for left Kan extensions along $j$, and so we call such systems of arities eleutheric. We show that $\mathcal{J}$-theories for an eleutheric system may be equivalently described as (i) monads in a certain one-object bicategory of profunctors on $\mathcal{J}$, and (ii) $\mathcal{V}$-monads on $\mathcal{V}$ satisfying a certain condition. We prove a characterization theorem for the categories of algebras of $\mathcal{J}$-theories, considered as $\mathcal{V}$-categories $\mathcal{A}$ equipped with a specified $\mathcal{V}$-functor $\mathcal{A} \rightarrow \mathcal{V}$.

Relative symmetric monoidal closed categories I: Autoenrichment and change of base

Symmetric monoidal closed categories may be related to one another not only by the functors between them but also by enrichment of one in another, and it was known to G. M. Kelly in the 1960s that there is a very close connection between these phenomena. In this first part of a two-part series on this subject, we show that the assignment to each symmetric monoidal closed category $V$ its associated $V$-enriched category $\underline{V}$ extends to a 2-functor valued in an op-2-fibred 2-category of symmetric monoidal closed categories enriched over various bases. For a fixed $V$, we show that this induces a 2-functorial passage from symmetric monoidal closed categories $\textit{over}$ $V$ (i.e., equipped with a morphism to $V$) to symmetric monoidal closed $V$-categories over $\underline{V}$. As a consequence, we find that the enriched adjunction determined a symmetric monoidal closed adjunction can be obtained by applying a 2-functor and, consequently, is an adjunction in the 2-category of symmetric monoidal closed $V$-categories.

Derivations in Codifferential Categories

Derivations provide a way of transporting ideas from the calculus of manifolds to algebraic settings where there is no sensible notion of limit. In this paper, we consider derivations in certain monoidal categories, called codifferential categories. Differential categories were introduced as the categorical framework for modelling differential linear logic. The deriving transform of a differential category, which models the differentiation inference rule, is a derivation in the dual category. We here explore that derivation's universality. One of the key structures associated to a codifferential category is an algebra modality. This is a monad $T$ such that each object of the form $TC$ is canonically an associative, commutative algebra. Consequently, every $T$-algebra has a canonical commutative algebra structure, and we show that universal derivations for these algebras can be constructed quite generally. It is a standard result that there is a bijection between derivations from an associative algebra $A$ to an $A$-module $M$ and algebra homomorphisms over $A$ from $A$ to $A\oplus M$, with $A\oplus M$ being considered as an infinitesimal extension of $A$. We lift this correspondence to our setting by showing that in a codifferential category there is a canonical $T$-algebra structure on $A\oplus M$. We call $T$-algebra morphisms from $TA$ to this $T$-algebra structure Beck $T$-derivations. This yields a novel, generalized notion of derivation. The remainder of the paper is devoted to exploring consequences of that definition. Along the way, we prove that the symmetric algebra construction in any suitable symmetric monoidal category provides an example of codifferential structure, and using this, we give an alternative definition for differential and codifferential categories.

Completion, closure, and density relative to a monad, with examples in functional analysis and sheaf theory

Given a monad T on a suitable enriched category B equipped with a proper factorization system (E,M), we define notions of T-completion, T-closure, and T-density. We show that not only the familiar notions of completion, closure, and density in normed vector spaces, but also the notions of sheafification, closure, and density with respect to a Lawvere-Tierney topology, are instances of the given abstract notions. The process of T-completion is equally the enriched idempotent monad associated to T (which we call the idempotent core of T), and we show that it exists as soon as every morphism in B factors as a T-dense morphism followed by a T-closed M-embedding. The latter hypothesis is satisfied as soon as B has certain pullbacks as well as wide intersections of M-embeddings. Hence the resulting theorem on the existence of the idempotent core of an enriched monad entails Fakir's existence result in the non-enriched case, as well as adjoint functor factorization results of Applegate-Tierney and Day.
