Stability of piecewise flat Ricci flow

The stability of a recently developed piecewise flat Ricci flow is investigated, using a linear stability analysis and numerical simulations, and a class of piecewise flat approximations of smooth manifolds is adapted to avoid an inherent numerical instability. These adaptations have also been used in a related paper to show the convergence of the piecewise flat Ricci flow to known smooth Ricci flow solutions for a variety of manifolds.

Piecewise flat approximations of local extrinsic curvature for non-Euclidean embeddings

Discrete forms of the mean and directed curvature are constructed on piecewise flat manifolds, providing local curvature approximations for smooth manifolds embedded in both Euclidean and non-Euclidean spaces. The resulting expressions take the particularly simple form of a weighted scalar sum of hinge angles, the angles between the normals of neighbouring piecewise flat segments, with the weights depending only on the intrinsic piecewise flat geometry and a choice of dual tessellation. The constructions are based on a new piecewise flat analogue of the curvature integral along and tangent to a geodesic segment, with integrals of these analogues then taken over carefully defined regions to give spatial averages of the curvature. Computations for surfaces in both Euclidean and non-Euclidean spaces indicate a clear convergence to the corresponding smooth curvature values as the piecewise flat mesh is refined, with the former comparing favourably with other discrete curvature approaches.

Piecewise flat Ricci flow of compact without boundary three-manifolds

Using a recently developed piecewise flat method, numerical evolutions of the Ricci flow are computed for a number of manifolds, using a number of different mesh types, and shown to converge to the expected smooth behaviour as the mesh resolution is increased. The manifolds were chosen to have varying degrees of homogeneity, and include Nil and Gowdy manifolds, a three-torus initially embedded in Euclidean four-space, and a perturbation of a flat three-torus. The piecewise flat Ricci flow of the first two are shown to converge to known smooth Ricci flow solutions, with the remaining two flowing asymptotically to flat metrics.

Piecewise Flat Extrinsic Curvature

Discretizations of the mean curvature and extrinsic curvature components are constructed on piecewise flat simplicial manifolds, giving approximations for smooth curvature values in a mostly mesh-independent way. These constructions are given in combinatoric form in terms of the extrinsic hinge angles, the intrinsic structure of the piecewise flat manifold and a choice of dual tessellation, and can be viewed as the average of $n$-volume integrals. The constructions are also independent of the manifold dimension.

Piecewise Flat Curvature and Ricci Flow in Three Dimensions

Discrete forms of the scalar, sectional and Ricci curvatures are constructed on simplicial piecewise flat triangulations of smooth manifolds, depending directly on the simplicial structure and a choice of dual tessellation. This is done by integrating over volumes which include appropriate samplings of hinges for each type of curvature, with the integrals based on the parallel transport of vectors around hinges. Computations for triangulations of a diverse set of manifolds show these piecewise flat curvatures to converge to their smooth values. The Ricci curvature also gives a piecewise flat Ricci flow as a fractional rate of change of edge-lengths, again converging to the smooth Ricci flow for the manifolds tested.

Coordinate independent expression for transverse trace-free tensors

The transverse and trace-free (TT) part of the extrinsic curvature represents half of the dynamical degrees of freedom of the gravitational field in the $3 + 1$ formalism. As such, it is part of the freely specifiable initial data for numerical relativity. Though TT tensors in 3-space possess only two component degrees of freedom, they cannot ordinarily be given solely by two scalar potentials. Such expressions have been derived however, in coordinate form, for all TT tensors in flat space which are also translationally or axially symmetric (Conboye and \'O Murchadha 2014 \emph{Class. Quantum Grav.} {\bf 31} 085019). Since TT tensors are conformally covariant, these also give TT tensors in conformally-flat space. In this article, the work above has been extended by giving a coordinate-\emph{independent} expression for these TT tensors. The translational and axial symmetry conditions have also been generalized to invariance along any hypersurface orthogonal Killing vector.

Distributed mean curvature on a discrete manifold for Regge calculus

The integrated mean curvature of a simplicial manifold is well understood in both Regge Calculus and Discrete Differential Geometry. However, a well motivated pointwise definition of curvature requires a careful choice of volume over which to uniformly distribute the local integrated curvature. We show that hybrid cells formed using both the simplicial lattice and its circumcentric dual emerge as a remarkably natural structure for the distribution of this local integrated curvature. These hybrid cells form a complete tessellation of the simplicial manifold, contain a geometric orthonormal basis, and are also shown to give a pointwise mean curvature with a natural interpretation as a fractional rate of change of the normal vector.

Potentials for transverse trace-free tensors

In the initial conditions of the $3 + 1$ formalism for numerical relativity, the transverse and trace-free (TT) part of the extrinsic curvature plays a key role. We know that TT tensors possess two degrees of freedom per space point. However, finding an expression for a TT tensor depending on only two scalar functions is a non-trivial task. Assuming either axial or translational symmetry, expressions depending on two scalar potentials alone are derived here for \emph{all} TT tensors in flat $3$-space. In a more general spatial slice, only one of these potentials is found, the same potential given in \cite{BakerPuzio} and \cite{Dain}, with the remaining equations reduced to a partial differential equation, depending on boundary conditions for a solution. As an exercise, we also derive the potentials which give the Bowen-York curvature tensor in flat space.
