Artinian Gorenstein algebras with Macaulay dual generator with fixed Waring rank

In this paper, we prove that the Artinian Gorenstein $\mathbb{K}$-algebra $A_{F_s}$ of codimension $n$, socle degree $d$ and Macaulay dual generator $F_s := \ell_1^d + \dots + \ell_s^d \in \mathbb{K}[X_1, \dots, X_n]$ where $\ell _1, \cdots , \ell_s$ are general linear forms satisfies the strong Lefschetz property (SLP). This result allows us to study whether the Waring rank of $F_s$ is exactly $s$. Furthermore, we show that $A_{F_s}$ is the doubling of a suitable 0-dimensional scheme $Z_{F_s}$ in $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$, the so-called tight annihilating scheme of $A_{F_s}$, and we compute the minimal free resolution of $A_{F_s}$ in terms of the minimal free $R$-resolution of $I(Z_{F_s})$. Finally, we determine the linear general Jordan type of $A_{F_s}$.

Stability of syzygy bundles of Ulrich bundles

Let X be either a smooth K3 surface or a smooth Fano variety (i.e. $-K_X$ is ample) of dimension $n$ and index $i_X> n-3$ and let E be an initialized Ulrich bundle on X. In this paper, we show that the syzygy bundle $S(E)$, defined as the kernel of the evaluation map $H^0(X,E)\otimes O_{X}\rightarrow E$, is semistable.

Jordan type of full Perazzo algebras

In this paper, we compute all possible Jordan types of linear forms $\ell$ in any full Perazzo algebra $A$. In some cases we are also able to compute the corresponding Jordan degree type, which is a finer invariant.

Smoothings of lci proper schemes

We give criteria for the existence of geometric smoothings of a proper lci scheme or a DM stack $X$ as well as for a polarized lci scheme $(X,L)$, without assuming that $X$ is reduced. As applications, we give criteria for the smoothability of polarized K3 surfaces and of stable varieties.

Schur powers of the cokernel of a graded morphism

Let $φ: F\longrightarrow G$ be a graded morphism between free $R$-modules of rank $t$ and $t+c-1$, respectively, and let $I_j(φ)$ be the ideal generated by the $j \times j$ minors of a matrix representing $φ$. In this short note: (1) We show that the canonical module of $R/I_j(φ)$ is up to twist equal to a suitable Schur power $Σ^I M$ of $M=\coker (φ^*)$; thus equal to $\wedge ^{t+1-j}M$ if $c=2$ in which case we find a minimal free $R$-resolution of $\wedge ^{t+1-j}M$ for any $j$, (2) For $c = 3$, we construct a free $R$-resolution of $\wedge ^2M$ which starts almost minimally (i.e. the first three terms are minimal up to a precise summand), and (3) For $c \ge 4$, we construct under a certain depth condition the first three terms of a free $R$-resolution of $\wedge ^2M$ which are minimal up to a precise summand. As a byproduct we answer the first open case of a question posed by Buchsbaum and Eisenbud.

Quasi-homogeneous singularities of projective hypersurfaces and Jacobian syzygies

We prove an unexpected general relation between the Jacobian syzygies of a projective hypersurface $V\subset \mathbb{P}^n$ with only isolated singularities and the nature of its singularities. This allows to establish a new method for the identification of quasi-homogeneous hypersurface isolated singularities. The result gives an insight on how the geometry is reflected in the Jacobian syzygies and extends previous results of the first, second and last author for free and nearly free plane curves [1].

Artinian Gorenstein algebras with binomial Macaulay dual generator

This paper initiates a systematic study for key properties of Artinian Gorenstein \(K\)-algebras having binomial Macaulay dual generators. In codimension 3, we demonstrate that all such algebras satisfy the strong Lefschetz property, can be constructed as a doubling of an appropriate 0-dimensional scheme in \(\mathbb{P}^2\), and we provide an explicit characterization of when they form a complete intersection. For arbitrary codimension, we establish sufficient conditions under which the weak Lefschetz property holds and show that these conditions are optimal.

New families of Artinian Gorenstein algebras with the weak Lefschetz property

We construct new families of Artinian Gorenstein graded $K$-algebras of arbitrary codimension having binomial Macaulay dual generators and satisfying the weak or the strong Lefschetz property. This is a companion paper to \cite{ADFMMSV}, which studies codimension three algebras having binomial Macaulay dual generators in great depth, establishing in particular that they enjoy the strong Lefschetz property.

On the moduli space of simple sheaves on singular K3 surfaces

Mukai proved that the moduli space of simple sheaves on a smooth projective K3 surface is symplectic, and in \cite{FM2} we gave two constructions allowing one to construct new locally closed Lagrangian/isotropic subspaces of the moduli from old ones. In this paper, we extend both Mukai's result and our construction to reduced projective K3 surfaces; for the former we need to restrict our attention to perfect sheaves. There are two key points where we cannot get a straightforward generalization. In each, we need to prove that a certain differential form on the moduli space of simple, perfect sheaves vanishes, and we introduce a smoothability condition to complete the proof.

Perazzo $n$-folds and the weak Lefschetz property

In this paper, we determine the maximum $h_{max}$ and the minimum $h_{min}$ of the Hilbert vectors of Perazzo algebras $A_F$, where $F$ is a Perazzo polynomial of degree $d$ in $n+m+1$ variables. These algebras always fail the Strong Lefschetz Property. We determine the integers $n,m,d$ such that $h_{max}$ (resp. $h_{min}$) is unimodal, and we prove that $A_F$ always fails the Weak Lefschetz Property if its Hilbert vector is maximum, while it satisfies the Weak Lefschetz Property if it is minimum, unimodal, and satisfies an additional mild condition. We determine the minimal free resolution of Perazzo algebras associated to Perazzo threefolds in $\mathbb P^4$ with minimum Hilbert vectors. Finally we pose some open problems in this context. Dedicated to Enrique Arrondo on the occasion of his $60^{th}$ birthday.

List of Problems

The study of the Lefschetz properties of Artinian graded algebras was motivated by the hard Lefschetz theorem for a smooth complex projective variety, a breakthrough in algebraic topology and geometry. Over the last few years, this topic has attracted increasing attention from mathematicians in various areas. Here, we suggest some important open problems about or related to Lefschetz properties of Artinian graded algebras with the ultimate aim to attract the attention of young researchers from different areas.

Deformation and Unobstructedness of Determinantal Schemes

Let $Hilb ^{p(t)}(P^n)$ be the Hilbert scheme of closed subschemes of $P^n$ with Hilbert polynomial $p(t) \in Q[t]$, and let $W:= \overline{W(\underline{b};\underline{a};r)}$ be the closure of the locus in $Hilb ^{p(t)}(P^n)$ of determinantal schemes defined by the vanishing of the $(t-r+1)\times (t - r+1)$ minors of some matrix $\mathcal A$ of size $t\times (t+c-1)$ with $ij$-enty a homogeneous form of degree $a_j-b_i$ and with $r$ satisfying $\max\{1,2-c\} \le r < t$. $W$ is an irreducible algebraic set. First of all, we compute an upper $r$-independent bound for the dimension of $W$ in terms of $a_j$ and $b_i$ which is sharp for $r=1$. In the linear case ($a_j = 1, b_i=0$) and cases sufficiently close, we conjecture and to a certain degree prove that this bound is achieved for all $r$. Then, we study to what extent $W$ is a generically smooth component of $Hilb ^{p(t)}(P^n)$. Under some weak numerical assumptions on the integers $a_j$ and $b_i$ (or under some depth conditions) we conjecture and often prove that $W$ is a generically smooth component. Moreover, we also study the depth of the normal module of the homogeneous coordinate ring of $(X)\in W$ and of a closely related module. We conjecture, and in some cases prove, that their codepth is often 1 (resp. $r$). These results extend previous results on standard determinantal schemes to determinantal schemes; i.e. previous results of the authors on $W(\underline{b};\underline{a};1)$ to $W$ with $1\le r < t$ and $c\ge 2-r$. Finally, deformations of exterior powers of the cokernel of the map determined by $\mathcal A$ are studied and proven to be given as deformations of $X \subset P^n$ if $\dim X \ge 3$. The work contains many examples which illustrate the results obtained and a considerable number of open problems; some of them are collected as conjectures in the final section.

Syzygy bundles of non-complete linear systems: stability and rigidness

Let $(X,L)$ be a polarized smooth projective variety. For any basepoint-free linear system $\mathcal{L}_{V}$ with $V\subset H^{0}(X,\mathcal{O}_{X}(L))$ we consider the syzygy bundle $M_{V}$ as the kernel of the evaluation map $V\otimes \mathcal{O}_{X}\rightarrow \mathcal{O}_{X}(L)$. The purpose of this article is twofold. First, we assume that $M_{V}$ is $L$-stable and prove that, in a wide family of projective varieties, it represents a smooth point $[M_{V}]$ in the corresponding moduli space $\mathcal{M}$. We compute the dimension of the irreducible component of $\mathcal{M}$ passing through $[M_{V}]$ and whether it is an isolated point. It turns out that the rigidness of $[M_{V}]$ is closely related to the completeness of the linear system $\mathcal{L}_{V}$. In the second part of the paper, we address a question posed by Brenner regarding the stability of $M_{V}$ when $V$ is general enough. We answer this question for a large family of polarizations of $X=\mathbb{P}^{m}\times\mathbb{P}^{n}$.

Lagrangian subspaces of the moduli space of simple sheaves on K3 surfaces

Let $X$ be a K3 surface and let $\text{Spl}(r;c_1,c_2)$ be the moduli space of simple sheaves on $X$ of fixed rank $r$ and Chern classes $c_1$ and $c_2$. Under suitable assumptions, to a pair $(F,W)$ (respectively, $(F,V)$) where $F\in \text{Spl}(r;c_1,c_2)$ and $W\subset H^0(F)$ (resp.~$V^*\subset H^1(F^*)$) is a vector subspace, we associate a simple syzygy bundle (resp.~extension bundle) on $X$. We show that both syzygy bundles and extension bundles can be constructed in families and that the induced morphism to a different component of the moduli of simple sheaves is a locally closed embedding. We show that this construction associates to every Lagrangian (resp.~isotropic) algebraic subspace of $\text{Spl}(r;c_1,c_2)$ an induced Lagrangian (resp.~isotropic) algebraic subspace of a different component of the moduli of simple sheaves.

Moduli of generalized syzygy bundles

Given a vector bundle $F$ on a variety $X$ and $W\subset H^0(F)$ such that the evaluation map $W\otimes \mathcal{O}_X\to F$ is surjective, its kernel $S_{F,W}$ is called generalized syzygy bundle. Under mild assumptions, we construct a moduli space $\mathcal{G}^0_U$ of simple generalized syzygy bundles, and show that the natural morphism $α$ to the moduli of simple sheaves is a locally closed embedding. If moreover $H^1(X,\mathcal{O}_X)=0$, we find an explicit open subspace $\mathcal{G}^0_V$ of $\mathcal{G}^0_U$ where the restriction of $α$ is an open embedding. In particular, if $\dim X\ge 3$ and $H^1(\mathcal{O}_X)=0$, starting from an ample line bundle (or a simple rigid vector bundle) on $X$ we construct recursively open subspaces of moduli spaces of simple sheaves on $X$ that are smooth, rational, quasiprojective varieties.

On the Weak Lefschetz Property for height four equigenerated complete intersections

We consider the conjecture that all artinian height 4 complete intersections of forms of the same degree $d$ have the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). We translate this problem to one of studying the general hyperplane section of a certain smooth curve in $\mathbb P^3$, and our main tools are the Socle Lemma of Huneke and Ulrich together with a careful liaison argument. Our main results are (i) a proof that the property holds for $d=3,4$ and 5; (ii) a partial result showing maximal rank in a non-trivial but incomplete range, cutting in half the previous unknown range; and (iii) a proof that maximal rank holds in a different range, even without assuming that all the generators have the same degree. We furthermore conjecture that if there were to exist any height 4 complete intersection generated by forms of the same degree and failing WLP then there must exist one (not necessarily the same one) failing by exactly one (in a sense that we make precise). Based on this conjecture we outline an approach to proving WLP for all equigenerated complete intersections in four variables. Finally, we apply our results to the Jacobian ideal of a smooth surface in~$\mathbb P^3$.

Hilbert functions and Jordan type of Perazzo Artinian algebras

We study Hilbert functions, Lefschetz properties, and Jordan type of Artinian Gorenstein algebras associated to Perazzo hypersurfaces in projective space. The main focus lies on Perazzo threefolds, for which we prove that the Hilbert functions are always unimodal. Further we prove that the Hilbert function determines whether the algebra is weak Lefschetz, and we characterize those Hilbert functions for which the weak Lefschetz property holds. By example, we verify that the Hilbert functions of Perazzo fourfolds are not always unimodal. In the particular case of Perazzo threefolds with the smallest possible Hilbert function, we give a description of the possible Jordan types for multiplication by any linear form.
