The Hasse norm principle for $A_4$-quartic extensions of global function fields

For a finite extension of global fields $K/k$, the norm map $N_{K/k} : K^\times \to k^\times$ extends to a map on id\`ele groups. The Hasse norm principle holds if every element of $k^\times$ that is a norm everywhere locally is also a norm globally. In this paper, we study the statistics of the Hasse norm principle in a setting that is out of reach in the number field context, namely that of $A_4$-quartic extensions. We show that failures of the Hasse norm principle are generally rare for $A_4$-quartic extensions of global function fields $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. We achieve this by introducing a decorated Hurwitz space parametrising the failures of the Hasse norm principle and then using the Chebotarev density theorem to estimate their frequency.

Hilbert property for low-genus families and degree-one del Pezzo surfaces

We prove that the Hilbert property is satisfied by certain del Pezzo surfaces of degree one and Picard rank 1 over fields finitely generated over $\mathbb{Q}$. We generalize results of the first author on elliptic surfaces and employ constructions used by Desjardins and the third author to prove density of rational points. Our results are the first on the Hilbert property for minimal del Pezzo surfaces of degree one without a conic fibration.

Generalized Eckardt points on del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1

We study intersections of exceptional curves on del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1, motivated by questions in arithmetic geometry. Outside characteristics 2 and 3, at most 10 exceptional curves can intersect in a point. We classify the different ways in which 10 exceptional curves can intersect, construct a new family of surfaces with 10 exceptional curves intersecting in a point, and discuss strategies for finding more such examples.

Weak weak approximation and the Hilbert property for degree-two del Pezzo surfaces

We prove that del Pezzo surfaces of degree $2$ over a field $k$ satisfy weak weak approximation if $k$ is a number field and the Hilbert property if $k$ is Hilbertian of characteristic zero, provided that they contain a $k$-rational point lying neither on any $4$ of the $56$ exceptional curves nor on the ramification divisor of the anticanonical morphism. This builds upon results of Manin, Salgado--Testa--V\'arilly-Alvarado, and Festi--van Luijk on the unirationality of such surfaces, and upon work of the first two authors verifying weak weak approximation under the assumption of a conic fibration.

Campana points on diagonal hypersurfaces

We construct an integral model for counting Campana points of bounded height on diagonal hypersurfaces of degree greater than one, and give an asymptotic formula for their number, generalising work by Browning and Yamagishi. The paper also includes background material on the theory of Campana points on hyperplanes and previous results in the field.

Torsion points and concurrent exceptional curves on del Pezzo surfaces of degree one

The blow-up of the anticanonical base point on a del Pezzo surface $S$ of degree 1 gives rise to a rational elliptic surface $\mathscr{E}$ with only irreducible fibers. The sections of minimal height of $\mathscr{E}$ are in correspondence with the $240$ exceptional curves on $S$. A natural question arises when studying the configuration of these curves: if a point on $S$ is contained in 'many' exceptional curves, it is torsion on its fiber on $\mathscr{E}$? In 2005, Kuwata proved for the analogous question on del Pezzo surfaces of degree $2$, where there are 56 exceptional curves, that if 'many' equals $4$ or more, the answer is yes. In this paper, we prove that for del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1, the answer is yes if 'many' equals $9$ or more. Moreover, we give counterexamples where a \textsl{non}-torsion point lies in the intersection of $7$ exceptional curves. We give partial results for the still open case of 8 intersecting exceptional curves.

Concurrent lines on del Pezzo surfaces of degree one

Let $X$ be a del Pezzo surface of degree one over an algebraically closed field $k$, and let $K_X$ be its canonical divisor. The morphism $φ$ induced by the linear system $|-2K_X|$ realizes $X$ as a double cover of a cone in $\mathbb{P}^3$ that is ramified over a smooth curve of degree 6. The surface $X$ contains 240 curves with negative self-intersection, called exceptional curves. We prove that for a point~$P$ on the ramification curve of $φ$, at most sixteen exceptional curves go through~$P$ in characteristic $2$, and at most ten in all other characteristics. Moreover, we prove that for a point $Q$ outside the ramification curve of $φ$, at most twelve exceptional curves go through $Q$ in characteristic $3$, and at most ten in all other characteristics. We show that these upper bounds are sharp in all cases except possibly in characteristic 5 outside the ramification curve.

Density of rational points on a family of del Pezzo surfaces of degree one

Let $k$ be an infinite field of characteristic 0, and $X$ a del Pezzo surface of degree $d$ with at least one $k$-rational point. Various methods from algebraic geometry and arithmetic statistics have shown the Zariski density of the set $X(k)$ of $k$-rational points in $X$ for $d\geq2$ (under an extra condition for $d=2$), but fail to work in generality when the degree of $X$ is 1, leaving a large class of del Pezzo surfaces for which the question of density of rational points is still open. In this paper, we prove the Zariski density of $X(k)$ when $X$ has degree 1 and is represented in the weighted projective space $\mathbb{P}(2,3,1,1)$ with coordinates $x,y,z,w$ by an equation of the form $y^2=x^3+az^6+bz^3w^3+cw^6$ for $a,b,c\in k$ with $a,c$ non-zero, under the condition that the elliptic surface obtained by blowing up the base point of the anticanonical linear system $|-K_X|$ contains a smooth fiber above a point in $\mathbb{P}^1\setminus\{(1:0),(0:1)\}$ with positive rank over $k$. When $k$ is of finite type over $\mathbb{Q}$, this condition is sufficient and necessary.

The action of the Weyl group on the $E_8$ root system

Let $Γ$ be the graph on the roots of the $E_8$ root system, where any two distinct vertices $e$ and $f$ are connected by an edge with color equal to the inner product of $e$ and $f$. For any set $c$ of colors, let $Γ_c$ be the subgraph of $Γ$ consisting of all the $240$ vertices, and all the edges whose color lies in $c$. We consider cliques, i.e., complete subgraphs, of $Γ$ that are either monochromatic, or of size at most $3$, or a maximal clique in $Γ_c$ for some color set $c$, or whose vertices are the vertices of a face of the $E_8$ root polytope. We prove that, apart from two exceptions, two such cliques are conjugate under the automorphism group of $Γ$ if and only if they are isomorphic as colored graphs. Moreover, for an isomorphism $f$ from one such clique $K$ to another, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for $f$ to extend to an automorphism of $Γ$, in terms of the restrictions of $f$ to certain special subgraphs of $K$ of size at most 7.

Recovery from Power Sums

We study the problem of recovering a collection of $n$ numbers from the evaluation of $m$ power sums. This yields a system of polynomial equations, which can be underconstrained ($m < n$), square ($m = n$), or overconstrained ($m > n$). Fibers and images of power sum maps are explored in all three regimes, and in settings that range from complex and projective to real and positive. This involves surprising deviations from the Bézout bound, and the recovery of vectors from length measurements by $p$-norms.

Linear Spaces of Symmetric Matrices with Non-Maximal Maximum Likelihood Degree

We study the maximum likelihood degree of linear concentration models in algebraic statistics. We relate the geometry of the reciprocal variety to that of semidefinite programming. We show that the Zariski closure in the Grassmanian of the set of linear spaces that do not attain their maximal possible maximum likelihood degree coincides with the Zariski closure of the set of linear spaces defining a projection with non-closed image of the positive semidefinite cone. In particular, this shows that this closure is a union of coisotropic hypersurfaces.

Fields of definition of elliptic fibrations on covers of certain extremal rational elliptic surfaces

We study K3 surfaces over a number field $k$ which are double covers of extremal rational elliptic surfaces. We provide a list of all elliptic fibrations on certain K3 surfaces together with the degree of a field extension over which each genus one fibration is defined and admits a section. We show that the latter depends, in general, on the action of the cover involution on the fibers of the genus 1 fibration.
