Curves defined by a class of discrete operators: approximation result and applications

In approximation theory classical discrete operators, like generalized sampling, Szász-Mirak'jan, Baskakov and Bernstein operators, have been extensively studied for scalar functions. In this paper, we look at the approximation of curves by a class of discrete operators and we exhibit graphical examples concerning several cases. The topic has useful implications about the computer graphics and the image processing: we discuss applications on the approximation and the reconstruction of curves in images.

Generalized frame operator, lower semi-frames and sequences of translates

Given an arbitrary sequence of elements $ξ=\{ξ_n\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ of a Hilbert space $(\mathcal{H},\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle)$, the operator $T_ξ$ is defined as the operator associated to the sesquilinear form $ Ω_ξ(f,g)=\sum_{n\in \mathbb{N}} \langle f,ξ_n\rangle\langleξ_n,g\rangle, $ for $f,g\in \{h\in \mathcal{H}: \sum_{n\in \mathbb{N}}|\langle h,ξ_n\rangle|^2<\infty\}$. This operator is in general different from the classical frame operator but possesses some remarkable properties. For instance, $T_ξ$ is always self-adjoint in regards to a particular space, unconditionally defined and, when $ξ$ is a lower semi-frame, $T_ξ$ gives a simple expression of a dual of $ξ$. The operator $T_ξ$ and lower semi-frames are studied in the context of sequences of integer translates of a function of $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. In particular, an explicit expression of $T_ξ$ is given in this context and a characterization of sequences of integer translates which are lower semi-frames is proved.

Weighted frames, weighted lower semi frames and unconditionally convergent multipliers

In this paper we ask when it is possible to transform a given sequence into a frame or a lower semi frame by multiplying the elements by numbers. In other words, we ask when a given sequence is a weighted frame or a weighted lower semi frame and for each case we formulate a conjecture. We determine several conditions under which these conjectures are true. Finally, we prove an equivalence between two older conjectures, the first one being that any unconditionally convergent multiplier can be written as a multiplier of Bessel sequences by shifting of weights, and the second one that every unconditionally convergent multiplier which is invertible can be written as a multiplier of frames by shifting of weights. We also show that these conjectures are also related to one of the newly posed conjectures.

Estimate of the spectral radii of Bessel multipliers and consequences

Bessel multipliers are operators defined from two Bessel sequences of elements of a Hilbert space and a complex sequence, and have frame multipliers as particular cases. In this paper an estimate of the spectral radius of a Bessel multiplier is provided involving the cross Gram operator of the two sequences. As an upshot, it is possible to individuate some regions of the complex plane where the spectrum of a multiplier of dual frames is contained.

Some perturbation results for quasi-bases and other sequences of vectors

We discuss some perturbation results concerning certain pairs of sequences of vectors in a Hilbert space $\Hil$ and producing new sequences which share, with the original ones, { reconstruction formulas on a dense subspace of $\Hil$ or on the whole space}. We also propose some preliminary results on the same issue, but in a distributional settings.

Non-existence of patterns for a class of weighted degenerate operators

A classical result by Casten-Holland and Matano asserts that constants are the only positive and stable solutions to semilinear elliptic PDEs subject to homogeneous Neumann boundary condition in bounded convex domains. In other terms, this result asserts that stable patterns do not exist in convex domains. In this paper we consider a weighted version of the Laplace operator, where the weight may be singular or degenerate at the origin, and prove the nonexistence of patterns, extending the results by Casten-Holland and Matano to general weak solutions (not necessarily stable) and under a suitable assumption on the nonlinearity and the domain. Our results exhibit some intriguing behaviour of the problem according to the weight and the geometry of the domain. Indeed, our main results follow from a geometric assumption on the second fundamental form of the boundary in terms of a parameter which describes the degeneracy of the operator. As a consequence, we provide some examples and show that nonexistence of patterns may occurs also for non convex domains whenever the weight is degenerate.

Localization of the spectra of dual frames multipliers

This paper concerns dual frames multipliers, i.e. operators in Hilbert spaces consisting of analysis, multiplication and synthesis processes, where the analysis and the synthesis are made by two dual frames, respectively. The goal of the paper is to give some results about the localization of the spectra of dual frames multipliers, i.e. to individuate regions of the complex plane containing the spectra using some information about the frames and the symbols.

On some dual frames multipliers with at most countable spectra

A dual frames multiplier is an operator consisting of analysis, multiplication and synthesis processes, where the analysis and the synthesis are made by two dual frames in a Hilbert space, respectively. In this paper we investigate the spectra of some dual frames multipliers giving, in particular, conditions to be at most countable. The contribution extends the results available in literature about the spectra of Bessel multipliers with symbol decaying to zero and of multipliers of dual Riesz bases.

Symmetry for positive critical points of Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities

We consider positive critical points of Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities and prove a Liouville type result which allows us to give a complete classification of the solutions in a certain range of parameters, providing a symmetry result for positive solutions. The governing operator is a weighted $p$-Laplace operator, which we consider for a general $p \in (1,d)$. For $p=2$, the symmetry breaking region for extremals of Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities was completely characterized in [J. Dolbeault, M. Esteban, M. Loss, Invent. Math. 44 (2016)]. Our results extend this result to a general $p$ and are optimal in some cases.

Orbits of bounded bijective operators and Gabor frames

This paper is a contribution to frame theory. Frames in a Hilbert space are generalizations of orthonormal bases. In particular, Gabor frames of $L^2(\mathbb{R})$, which are made of translations and modulations of one or more windows, are often used in applications. More precisely, the paper deals with a question posed in the last years by Christensen and Hasannasab about the existence of overcomplete Gabor frames, with some ordering over $\mathbb{Z}$, which are orbits of bounded operators on $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. Two classes of overcomplete Gabor frames which cannot be ordered over $\mathbb{Z}$ and represented by orbits of operators in $GL(L^2(\mathbb{R}))$ are given. Some results about operator representation are stated in a general context for arbitrary frames, covering also certain wavelet frames.

Classification and non-existence results for weak solutions to quasilinear elliptic equations with Neumann or Robin boundary conditions

We classify positive solutions to a class of quasilinear equations with Neumann or Robin boundary conditions in convex domains. Our main tool is an integral formula involving the trace of some relevant quantities for the problem. Under a suitable condition on the nonlinearity, a relevant consequence of our results is that we can extend to weak solutions a celebrated result obtained for stable solutions by Casten and Holland and by Matano.

Frames and weak frames for unbounded operators

In 2012 Găvruţa introduced the notions of $K$-frame and of atomic system for a linear bounded operator $K$ in a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, in order to decompose its range $\mathcal{R}(K)$ with a frame-like expansion. In this article we revisit these concepts for an unbounded and densely defined operator $A:\mathcal{D}(A)\to\mathcal{H}$ in two different ways. In one case we consider a non-Bessel sequence where the coefficient sequence depends continuously on $f\in\mathcal{D}(A)$ with respect to the norm of $\mathcal{H}$. In the other case we consider a Bessel sequence and the coefficient sequence depends continuously on $f\in\mathcal{D}(A)$ with respect to the graph norm of $A$.

Some notes about distribution frame multipliers

Inspired by a recent work about distribution frames, the definition of multiplier operator is extended in the rigged Hilbert spaces setting and a study of its main properties is carried on. In particular, conditions for the density of domain and boundedness are given. The case of Riesz distribution bases is examined in order to develop a symbolic calculus.

A Lebesgue-type decomposition on one side for sesquilinear forms

Sesquilinear forms which are not necessarily positive may have a different behavior, with respect to a positive form, on each side. For this reason a Lebesgue-type decomposition on one side is provided for generic forms satisfying a boundedness condition.

Sesquilinear forms associated to sequences on Hilbert spaces

The possibility of defining sesquilinear forms starting from one or two sequences of elements of a Hilbert space is investigated. One can associate operators to these forms and in particular look for conditions to apply representation theorems of sesquilinear forms, such as Kato's theorems. The associated operators correspond to classical frame operators or weakly-defined multipliers in the bounded context. In general some properties of them, such as the invertibility and the resolvent set, are related to properties of the sesquilinear forms. As an upshot of this approach new features of sequences (or pairs of sequences) which are semi-frames (or reproducing pairs) are obtained.

Maximal operators with respect to the numerical range

Let $\mathfrak{n}$ be a nonempty, proper, convex subset of $\mathbb{C}$. The $\mathfrak{n}$-maximal operators are defined as the operators having numerical ranges in $\mathfrak{n}$ and are maximal with this property. Typical examples of these are the maximal symmetric (or accretive or dissipative) operators, the associated to some sesquilinear forms (for instance, to closed sectorial forms), and the generators of some strongly continuous semi-groups of bounded operators. In this paper the $\mathfrak{n}$-maximal operators are studied and some characterizations of these in terms of the resolvent set are given.

A Lebesgue-type decomposition for non-positive sesquilinear forms

A Lebesgue-type decomposition of a (non necessarily non-negative) sesquilinear form with respect to a non-negative one is studied. This decomposition consists of a sum of three parts: two are dominated by an absolutely continuous form and a singular non-negative one, respectively, and the latter is majorized by the product of an absolutely continuous and a singular non-negative forms. The Lebesgue decomposition of a complex measure is given as application.

A Kato's second type representation theorem for solvable sesquilinear forms

Kato's second representation theorem is generalized to solvable sesquilinear forms. These forms need not be non-negative nor symmetric. The representation considered holds for a subclass of solvable forms (called hyper-solvable), precisely for those whose domain is exactly the domain of the square root of the modulus of the associated operator. This condition always holds for closed semibounded forms, and it is also considered by several authors for symmetric sign-indefinite forms. As a consequence, a one-to-one correspondence between hyper-solvable forms and operators, which generalizes those already known, is established.
