Photon transport in a dissipative chain of nonlinear cavities

We analyze a chain of coupled nonlinear optical cavities driven by a coherent source of light localized at one end and subject to uniform dissipation. We characterize photon transport by studying the populations and the photon correlations as a function of position. When complemented with input-output theory, these quantities provide direct information about photon transmission through the system. The position of single- and multi-photon resonances directly reflect the structure of the many-body energy levels. This shows how a study of transport along a coupled cavity array can provide rich information about the strongly correlated (many-body) states of light even in presence of dissipation. By means of a numerical algorithm based on the time-evolving block decimation scheme adapted to mixed states, we are able to simulate arrays up to sixty cavities.

All-optical non-Markovian stroboscopic quantum simulator

An all-optical scheme for simulating non-Markovian evolution of a quantum system is proposed. It uses only linear optics elements and by controlling the system parameters allows one to control the presence or absence of information backflow from the environment. A sufficient and necessary condition for the non-Markovianity of our channel based on Gaussian inputs is proved. Various criteria for detecting non-Markovianity are also investigated by checking the dynamical evolution of the channel.

Thermopower of three-terminal topological superconducting systems

We study the thermopower of a three-terminal setup composed of a quantum dot attached to three electrodes, one of which is a topological superconductor. In the model, superconductivity is explicitly taken into account. We compare the results for s-wave (trivial) and p-wave (topological) superconductors and observe that for small temperatures the thermopower has different sign in the two cases. This behavior is strongly dependent on temperature and we estimate an energy scale that controls the sign in the p-wave case, which results proportional to the square root of the gap and the coupling to superconductor. The analytical results obtained with a simple 1D model are confirmed by a more realistic tight-binding model.

Nonequilibrium fluctuations in quantum heat engines: Theory, example, and possible solid state experiments

We study the stochastic energetic exchanges in quantum heat engines. Due to microreversibility, these obey a fluctuation relation, called the heat engine fluctuation relation, which implies the Carnot bound: no machine can have an efficiency larger than Carnot's efficiency. The stochastic thermodynamics of a quantum heat engine (including the joint statistics of heat and work and the statistics of efficiency) is illustrated by means of an optimal two-qubit heat engine, where each qubit is coupled to a thermal bath and a two-qubit gate determines energy exchanges between the two qubits. We discuss possible solid state implementations with Cooper pair boxes and flux qubits, quantum gate operations, and fast calorimetric on-chip measurements of single stochastic events.

Multistability of a Josephson parametric amplifier coupled to a mechanical resonator

We study the dynamics of Josephson Parametric Amplifier (JPA) coupled to a mechanical oscillator, as realised with a dc Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) with an embedded movable arm. We analyse this system in the regime when the frequency of the mechanical oscillator is comparable in magnitude with the plasma oscillation of the SQUID. When the nano-mechanical resonator is driven, it strongly affects the dynamics of the JPA. We show that this coupling can considerably modify the dynamics of JPA and induce its multistability rather than common bistability. This analysis is relevant if one considers a JPA for detection of mechanical motion.

Geometric quantum pumping in the presence of dissipation

The charge transported when a quantum pump is adiabatically driven by time-dependent external forces in presence of dissipation is given by the line integral of a pumping field $\mathbf{F}$. We give a general expression of $\mathbf{F}$ in terms of quantum correlation functions evaluated at fixed external forces. Hence, an advantage of our method is that it transforms the original time-dependent problem into an autonomous one. Yet another advantage is that the curl of $\mathbf{F}$ gives immediate visual information about the geometric structures governing dissipative quantum pumping. This can be used in a wide range of experimental cases, including electron pumps based on quantum dots and Cooper-pair pumps based on superconducting devices. Applied to a Cooper-pair sluice, we find an intriguing dissipation-induced enhancement of charge pumping, reversals of current, and emergence of asymmetries. This geometric method thus enables one to unveil a plethora of beneficial, dissipation-assisted operation protocols.

The XYZ chain with Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions: from spin-orbit-coupled lattice bosons to interacting Kitaev chains

Using the density-matrix renormalization-group algorithm (DMRG) and a finite-size scaling analysis, we study the properties of the one-dimensional completely-anisotropic spin-1/2 XYZ model with Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. The model shows a rich phase diagram: depending on the value of the coupling constants, the system can display different kinds of ferromagnetic order and Luttinger-liquid behavior. Transitions from ferromagnetic to Luttinger-liquid phases are first order. We thoroughly discuss the transition between different ferromagnetic phases, which, in the absence of DM interactions, belongs to the XX universality class. We provide evidence that the DM exchange term turns out to split this critical line into two separated Ising-like transitions and that in between a disordered phase may appear. Our study sheds light on the general problem of strongly-interacting spin-orbit-coupled bosonic gases trapped in an optical lattice and can be used to characterize the topological properties of superconducting nanowires in the presence of an imposed supercurrent and of interactions.

Steady-state phase diagram of a driven QED-cavity array with cross-Kerr nonlinearities

We study the properties of an array of QED-cavities coupled by nonlinear elements in the presence of photon leakage and driven by a coherent source. The main effect of the nonlinear couplings is to provide an effective cross-Kerr interaction between nearest-neighbor cavities. Additionally, correlated photon hopping between neighboring cavities arises. We provide a detailed mean-field analysis of the steady-state phase diagram as a function of the system parameters, the leakage, and the external driving, and show the emergence of a number of different quantum phases. A photon crystal associated to a spatial modulation of the photon blockade appears. The steady state can also display oscillating behavior and bistability. In some regions the crystalline ordering may coexist with the oscillating behavior. Furthermore we study the effect of short-range quantum fluctuations by employing a cluster mean-field analysis. Focusing on the corrections to the photon crystal boundaries, we show that, apart for some quantitative differences, the cluster mean field supports the findings of the simple single-site analysis. In the last part of the paper we concentrate on the possibility to build up the class of arrays introduced here, by means of superconducting circuits of existing technology. We consider a realistic choice of the parameters for this specific implementation and discuss some properties of the steady-state phase diagram.

Thermoelectric efficiency of three-terminal quantum thermal machines

The efficiency of a thermal engine working in linear response regime in a multi-terminals configuration is discussed. For the generic three-terminal case, we provide a general definition of local and non-local transport coefficients: electrical and thermal conductances, and thermoelectric powers. Within the Onsager formalism, we derive analytical expressions for the efficiency at maximum power, which can be written in terms of generalized figures of merit. Also, using two examples, we investigate numerically how a third terminal could improve the performance of a quantum system, and under which conditions non-local thermoelectric effects can be observed.

Detecting two-site spin-entanglement in many-body systems with local particle-number fluctuations

We derive experimentally measurable lower bounds for the two-site entanglement of the spin-degrees of freedom of many-body systems with local particle-number fluctuations. Our method aims at enabling the spatially resolved detection of spin-entanglement in Hubbard systems using high-resolution imaging in optical lattices. A possible application is the observation of entanglement generation and spreading during spin impurity dynamics, for which we provide numerical simulations. More generally, the scheme can simplify the entanglement detection in ion chains, Rydberg atoms, or similar atomic systems.

Out-of-equilibrium dynamics and thermalization of string order

We investigate the equilibration dynamics of string order in one-dimensional quantum systems. After initializing a spin-1 chain in the Haldane phase, the time evolution of non-local correlations following a sudden quench is studied by means of matrix-product-state-based algorithms. Thermalization occurs only for scales up to a horizon growing at a well defined speed, due to the finite maximal velocity at which string correlations can propagate, related to a Lieb-Robinson bound. The persistence of string ordering at finite times is non-trivially related to symmetries of the quenched Hamiltonian. A qualitatively similar behavior is found for the string order of the Mott insulating phase in the Bose-Hubbard chain. This paves the way towards an experimental testing of our results in present cold-atom setups.

Quantum quenches, linear response and superfluidity out of equilibrium

By analysing the sensitivity to a twist in the boundary conditions of the stationary state attained by a many-body system long after a quantum quench, we extend the concepts of the helicity modulus and the stiffness to non-equilibrium situations. Using these generalised quantities, we characterise the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of hard-core bosons quenched to/from superfluid/insulating phases and show that qualitative new features emerge as compared to the equilibrium case. Our predictions can be tested in experiments with cold bosonic atoms confined in toroidal traps and subject to artificial gauge fields.

Unconstrained Tree Tensor Network: An adaptive gauge picture for enhanced performance

We introduce a variational algorithm to simulate quantum many-body states based on a tree tensor network ansatz which releases the isometry constraint usually imposed by the real-space renormalization coarse-graining: This additional numerical freedom, combined with the loop-free topology of the tree network, allows one to maximally exploit the internal gauge invariance of tensor networks, ultimately leading to a computationally flexible and efficient algorithm able to treat open and periodic boundary conditions on the same footing. We benchmark the novel approach against the 1D Ising model in transverse field with periodic boundary conditions and discuss the strategy to cope with the broken translational invariance generated by the network structure. We then perform investigations on a state-of-the-art problem, namely the bilinear-biquadratic model in the transition between dimer and ferromagnetic phases. Our results clearly display an exponentially diverging correlation length and thus support the most recent guesses on the peculiarity of the transition.

Steady-state entanglement activation in optomechanical cavities

Quantum discord, and a number of related indicators, are currently raising a relentless interest as a novel paradigm of non-classical correlations beyond entanglement. Beside merely fundamental aspects, various works have shown that discord is a valuable -- so far largely unexplored -- resource in quantum information processing. Along this line, quite a striking scheme is {entanglement activation}. An initial amount of discord between two disentangled parties of a multipartite system affects the dynamics so as to establish entanglement across a bipartition, which would not arise otherwise. To date, such a process was proven to be achievable only dynamically, i.e., with no guarantee of a stationary entanglement throughput in the presence of noise. Here, we discover a {\it discord-activated mechanism yielding steady-state entanglement} production in a realistic continuous-variable setup. This comprises two coupled optomechanical cavities, where the optical modes (OMs) communicate through a fiber. We first use a simplified model to highlight the creation of steady-state discord between the OMs. We show next that such discord improves the level of stationary optomechanical entanglement attainable in the system, making it more robust against temperature and thermal noise.

Theory of integer quantum Hall polaritons in graphene

We present a theory of the cavity quantum electrodynamics of the graphene cyclotron resonance. By employing a canonical transformation, we derive an effective Hamiltonian for the system comprised of two neighboring Landau levels dressed by the cavity electromagnetic field (integer quantum Hall polaritons). This generalized Dicke Hamiltonian, which contains terms that are quadratic in the electromagnetic field and respects gauge invariance, is then used to calculate thermodynamic properties of the quantum Hall polariton system. Finally, we demonstrate that the generalized Dicke description fails when the graphene sheet is heavily doped, i.e. when the Landau level spectrum of 2D massless Dirac fermions is approximately harmonic. In this case we `integrate out' the Landau levels in valence band and obtain an effective Hamiltonian for the entire stack of Landau levels in conduction band, as dressed by strong light-matter interactions.

Andreev levels spectroscopy of topological three-terminal junctions

We calculate the differential conductance at a probe inserted in the weak link of a topological Josephson junction, consisting of a semiconducting nanowire deposited on top of two separated superconductors. Our aim is to understand how the peculiar features in the spectrum of Andreev bound states, arising due to the presence of Majorana bound states at the ends of the two topological superconducting wires defining the junction, can be determined through a measurement of the differential conductance. We find that when the probe allows a single propagating mode, the differential conductance presents a dip at zero voltage of zero conductance close to the position where the spectrum exhibits the topologically protected crossing. This can be viewed as a signature of the presence of Majorana states, which does not require fermion parity conservation and is robust against parameters' changes, as well as disorder. On the contrary, when the probe allows two or more propagating modes the differential conductance resembles the spectrum of Andreev bound states. This has been established making use of both numerical and analytical methods.

We report on the theoretical analysis of bosonic and fermionic non-interacting systems in a discrete two-particle quantum walk affected by different kinds of disorder. We considered up to 100-step QWs with a spatial, temporal and space-temporal disorder observing how the randomness and the wavefunction symmetry non-trivially affect the final spatial probability distribution, the transport properties and the Shannon entropy of the walkers.

Topological pumping in class-D superconducting wires

We study adiabatic pumping at a normal metal/class-D superconductor hybrid interface when superconductivity is induced through the proximity effect in a spin-orbit coupled nanowire in the presence of a tilted Zeeman field. When the induced order parameter in the nanowire is non-uniform, the phase diagram has isolated trivial regions surrounded by topological ones. We show that in this case the pumped charge is quantized in units of the elementary charge $e$ and has a topological nature.
