A linear rotor trapped and coupled to the vibrational modes of an ion crystal

When molecular ions are trapped together with atomic ions in a Paul trap, their dipole moment couples the molecular rotation to the joint vibrational motion of the particles in the trap. To leverage this coupling for quantum control, a rotational transition in the molecule should be resonant with one of the ion crystal vibrational modes. Focusing on the example of singly charged thorium fluoride molecular ions, cotrapped with two ytterbium ions, we determine the conditions for resonant dipole-phonon coupling, fully accounting for the molecular hyperfine structure. We identify several choices for resonant coupling and discuss its detection using sideband-resolved laser spectroscopy and measurements of decoherence.

Ultralong-range Cs-RbCs Rydberg molecules: non-adiabaticity of dipole moments

We consider ultralong-range polyatomic Rydberg molecules formed by combining a Rydberg cesium atom and a ground-state RbCs molecule. We explore the regime where the charge-dipole interaction due to the Rydberg electron with the diatomic polar molecule couples the quantum defect Rydberg states Cs(ns) to the nearest degenerate hydrogenic manifold. We consider polyatomic Rydberg molecules in states which are amenable to production in optical tweezers and study the influence of nonadiabatic coupling on the likelihood of their formation. The decay rates of the vibrational states reflect the interference signature of wave function spread in different coupled potential wells.

Coherent optical creation of a single molecule

We report coherent association of atoms into a single weakly bound NaCs molecule in an optical tweezer through an optical Raman transition. The Raman technique uses a deeply bound electronic excited intermediate state to achieve a large transition dipole moment while reducing photon scattering. Starting from two atoms in their relative motional ground state, we achieve an optical transfer efficiency of 69%. The molecules have a binding energy of 770.2MHz at 8.83(2)G. This technique does not rely on Feshbach resonances or narrow excited-state lines and may allow a wide range of molecular species to be assembled atom-by-atom.

Ultralong-range Rydberg bi-molecules

We predict that ultralong-range Rydberg bi-molecules form in collisions between polar molecules in cold and ultracold settings. The collision of $Λ$-doublet nitric oxide (NO) with long-lived Rydberg NO($nf$, $ng$) molecules forms ultralong-range Rydberg bi-molecules with GHz energies and kilo-Debye permanent electric dipole moments. The Hamiltonian includes both the anisotropic charge-molecular dipole interaction and the electron-NO scattering. The rotational constant for the Rydberg bi-molecules is in the MHz range, allowing for microwave spectroscopy of rotational transitions in Rydberg bi-molecules. Considerable orientation of NO dipole can be achieved. The Rydberg molecules described here hold promise for studies of a special class of long-range bi-molecular interactions.

A protocol to realize triatomic ultralong range Rydberg molecules in an ultracold KRb gas

We propose an experimentally realizable scheme to produce triatomic ultralong-range Rydberg molecules (TURM), formed in ultracold KRb traps. A near resonant coupling of the non-zero quantum defect Rydberg levels with the KRb molecule in N=0 and N=2 rotational levels, is engineered which exploits the unique Rydberg electron-molecule anisotropic dipole interaction. This near resonant coupling enhances the TURM binding and produces favorable Franck-Condon factors. Schemes for both postassium and rubidium excitations are demonstrated.

Impact of Electric Fields on Highly Excited Rovibrational States of Polar Dimers

We study the effect of a strong static homogeneous electric field on the highly excited rovibrational levels of the LiCs dimer in its electronic ground state. Our full rovibrational investigation of the system includes the interaction with the field due to the permanent electric dipole moment and the polarizability of the molecule. We explore the evolution of the states next to the dissociation threshold as the field strength is increased. The rotational and vibrational dynamics are influenced by the field; effects such as orientation, angular motion hybridization and squeezing of the vibrational motion are demonstrated and analyzed. The field also induces avoided crossings causing a strong mixing of the electrically dressed rovibrational states. Importantly, we show how some of these highly excited levels can be shifted to the continuum as the field strength is increased, and reversely how two atoms in the continuum can be brought into a bound state by lowering the electric field strength.
