Arithmeticity and commensurability of links in thickened surfaces

The family of right-angled tiling links consists of links built from regular 4-valent tilings of constant-curvature surfaces that contain one or two types of tiles. The complements of these links admit complete hyperbolic structures and contain two totally geodesic checkerboard surfaces that meet at right angles. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of which right-angled tiling links are arithmetic, and which are pairwise commensurable. The arithmeticity classification exploits symmetry arguments and the combinatorial geometry of Coxeter polyhedra. The commensurability classification relies on identifying the canonical decompositions of the link complements, in addition to number-theoretic data from invariant trace fields.

Right-angled links in thickened surfaces

Traditionally, alternating links are studied with alternating diagrams on $S^2$ in $S^3$. In this paper, we consider links which are alternating on higher genus surfaces $S_g$ in $S_g \times I$. We define what it means for such a link to be right-angled generalized completely realizable (RGCR) and show that this property is equivalent to the link having two totally geodesic checkerboard surfaces, equivalent to each checkerboard surface consisting of one type of polygon, and equivalent to a set of restrictions on the link's alternating projection diagram. We then use these diagram restrictions to classify RGCR links according to the polygons in their checkerboard surfaces, provide a bound on the number of RGCR links for a given surface of genus $g$, and find an RGCR knot. Along the way, we answer a question posed by Champanerkar, Kofman, and Purcell about links with alternating projections on the torus.

Densities of Hyperbolic Cusp Invariants

We find that cusp densities of hyperbolic knots in the 3-sphere are dense in [0,0.6826...] and those of links are dense in [0,0.853...]. We define a new invariant associated with cusp volume, the cusp crossing density, as the ratio between the cusp volume and the crossing number of a link, and show that cusp crossing density for links is bounded above by 3.1263.... Moreover, there is a sequence of links with cusp crossing density approaching 3. The least upper bound for cusp crossing density remains an open question. For two-component hyperbolic links, cusp crossing density is shown to be dense in the interval [0,1.6923...] and for all hyperbolic links, cusp crossing density is shown to be dense in [0, 2.120...].
