The Brauer group of $BG$ and gerbe structures of moduli spaces

We study the $\mu _N$-gerbe of curves of genus $g$ with an order $N$ automorphism, and explore what corresponding $H^2$-cohomology classes the components of this stack can have. In particular, we look at curves whose quotients by the order $N$ automorphism are genus 0, and completely determine the Brauer classes of these gerbes. The key technical input is the calculation of the Brauer group of $BG$, for $G$ a smooth connected semisimple linear algebraic group.

Chow Rings of Hurwitz Spaces with Marked Ramification

The Hurwitz space $\overline{\mathscr{H}}_{k,g}$ is a compactification of the space of smooth genus-$g$ curves with a simply-branched degree-$k$ map to $\mathbb{P}^1$. In this paper, we initiate a study of the Chow rings of these spaces, proving in particular that when $k=3$ (which is the first case in which the Chow ring is not already known), the codimension-2 Chow group is generated by the fundamental classes of codimension-2 boundary strata. The key tool is to realize the codimension-1 boundary strata of $\overline{\mathscr{H}}_{3,g}$ as the images of gluing maps whose domains are products of Hurwitz spaces $\mathscr{H}_{k',g'}(\mu)$ with a single marked fiber of prescribed (not necessarily simple) ramification profile $\mu$, and to prove that the spaces $\mathscr{H}_{k',g'}(\mu)$ with $k'=2,3$ have trivial Chow ring.

The Brauer Group of $\mathscr{Y}_0(2)$

We determine the Brauer group of the Deligne-Mumford stack $\mathscr{Y}_0(2)$, the moduli space of elliptic curves with a marked $2$-torsion subgroup over bases of arithmetic interest. Antieau and Meier determine the Brauer group for $\mathscr{M}_{1,1}$, the moduli stack of elliptic curves by exploiting the fact it is covered by the Legendre family and using the Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence. Over an algebraically closed field, Shin uses the coarse space map to determine the Brauer group of $\mathscr{M}_{1,1}$. We combine techniques from both papers to determine the Brauer group of $\mathscr{Y}_0(2)$.

Picard Groups of Stacky Curves

We describe the Picard group of a tame stacky curve as an extension of two groups, which depend on the gerbe class of the curve over its rigidification, a stacky curve with trivial generic stabilizer, and the residual gerbes of the rigidification. After presenting the general formulation, we compute some specific examples. In particular, we provide an example highlighting the fact that the extension of the groups truly depends on the class of the gerbe.
