Electronic and magnetic properties of the RuX$_3$ (X=Cl, Br, I) family: Two siblings -- and a cousin?

Motivated by recent reports of metallic behavior in the recently synthesized RuI$_3$, in contrast to the Mott-insulating nature of the actively discussed $α$-RuCl$_3$, as well as RuBr$_3$, we present a detailed comparative analysis of the electronic and magnetic properties of this family of trihalides. Using a combination of first-principles calculations and effective-model considerations, we conclude that RuI$_3$, similarly to the other two members, is most probably on the verge of a Mott insulator, but with much smaller magnetic moments and a strong magnetic frustration. We predict the ideal pristine crystal of RuI$_3$ to have a nearly vanishing conventional nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interaction and to be a quantum spin liquid candidate of possibly different kind than the Kitaev spin liquid. In order to understand the apparent contradiction to the reported resistivity $ρ$, we analyze the experimental evidence for all three compounds and propose a scenario for the observed metallicity in existing samples of RuI$_3$. Furthermore, for the Mott insulator RuBr$_3$ we obtain a magnetic Hamiltonian of a similar form to that in the much discussed $α$-RuCl$_3$ and show that this Hamiltonian is in agreement with experimental evidence in RuBr$_3$.

Microscopic origin of magnetism in monolayer $3d$ transition metal dihalides

Motivated by the recent wealth of exotic magnetic phases emerging in two-dimensional frustrated lattices, we investigate the origin of possible magnetism in the monolayer family of triangular lattice materials $MX_2$ ($M$={V, Mn, Ni}, $X$={Cl, Br, I}). We first show that consideration of general properties such as filling and hybridization enables to formulate trends for the most relevant magnetic interaction parameters. In particular, we observe that the effects of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can be effectively tuned through the ligand elements as the considered 3$d$ transition metal ions do not strongly contribute to the anisotropic component of the inter-site exchange interaction. Consequently, we find that the corresponding SOC matrix-elements differ significantly from the atomic limit. In a next step and by using two complementary approaches based on first principles, we extract realistic effective spin models and find that in the case of heavy ligand elements, SOC effects manifest in anisotropic exchange and single-ion anisotropy only for specific fillings.

Role of disorder in the electronic and magnetic properties of Ag$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$

The nature of magnetism in the intercalated honeycomb iridate Ag$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ has been a subject of recent intensive debate, where the absence or presence of antiferromagnetic order has been reported to be related to possible structural disorder effects and, an enhanced Ir-O hybridization and itinerancy with respect to the parent Li$_2$IrO$_3$ has been suggested as the origin of distinct x-ray spectroscopy features. In the present work we investigate the microscopic nature of the electronic and magnetic properties of Ag$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ via a combination of density functional theory combined with exact diagonalization of ab initio-derived models for various experimental and theoretical structures. We evaluate two possible scenarios, the itinerant quasimolecular framework (QMO) on the one hand, and the localized relativistic $j_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ and $j_{\rm eff} = 3/2$ picture on the other hand, and find that the latter description is still viable for this system. We further calculate resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra and show that agreement with experimental observations can be obtained if the presence of Ag vacancies leading to changes in Ir filling and structural disorder is assumed. Finally, we show that the experimentally observed antiferromagnetic spiral magnetic order is reproduced by our ab-initio derived magnetic models.

Phase diagram of a distorted kagome antiferromagnet and application to Y-kapellasite

We investigate the magnetism of a previously unexplored distorted spin-1/2 kagome model consisting of three symmetry-inequivalent nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg couplings Jhexagon, J and J', and uncover a rich ground state phase diagram even at the classical level. Using analytical arguments and numerical techniques we identify a collinear Q = 0 magnetic phase, two unusual non-collinear coplanar Q = (1/3,1/3) phases and a classical spin liquid phase with a degenerate manifold of non-coplanar ground states, resembling the jammed spin liquid phase found in the context of a bond-disordered kagome antiferromagnet. We further show with density functional theory calculations that the recently synthesized Y-kapellasite Y3Cu9(OH)19Cl8 is a realization of this model and predict its ground state to lie in the region of Q = (1/3,1/3) order, which remains stable even after inclusion of quantum fluctuation effects within variational Monte Carlo and pseudofermion functional renormalization group. The presented model opens a new direction in the study of kagome antiferromagnets.

Construction of $A$-$B$ hetero-layer intermetallic crystals: case studies of the 1144-phase TM-phosphides \textit{AB}(TM)$_4$P$_4$ (TM=Fe, Ru, Co, Ni

The discovery of the 1144-phase, e.g. CaKFe$_4$As$_4$, creates opportunities to build novel intermetallics with alternative stacking of two parent compounds. Here we formalize the idea by defining a class of bulk crystalline solids with $A$-$B$ stacking (including 1144-phases and beyond), which is a generalization of hetero-structures from few-layer or thin-film semi-conductors to bulk intermetallics. Theoretically, four families of phosphides \textit{AB}(TM)$_4$P$_4$ (TM=Fe, Ru, Co, Ni) are investigated by first-principles calculations, wherein configurational, vibrational and electronic degrees of freedom are considered. It predicts a variety of stable 1144-phases (especially Ru- and Fe-phosphides). Stability rules are found and structural/electronic properties are discussed. Experimentally, we synthesize high-purity CaKRu$_4$P$_4$ as a proof of principle example. The synthetic method is simple and easily applied. Moreover, it alludes to a strategy to explore complex multi-component compounds, facilitated by a phase diagram coordinated by collective descriptors.

Pressure-induced ferromagnetism in the topological semimetal EuCd$_2$As$_2$

The antiferromagnet and semimetal EuCd$_2$As$_2$ has recently attracted a lot of attention due to a wealth of topological phases arising from the interplay of topology and magnetism. In particular, the presence of a single pair of Weyl points is predicted for a ferromagnetic configuration of Eu spins along the $c$-axis in EuCd$_2$As$_2$. In the search for such phases, we investigate here the effects of hydrostatic pressure in EuCd$_2$As$_2$. For that, we present specific heat, transport and $μ$SR measurements under hydrostatic pressure up to $\sim\,2.5\,$GPa, combined with {\it ab initio} density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Experimentally, we establish that the ground state of EuCd$_2$As$_2$ changes from in-plane antiferromagnetic (AFM$_{ab}$) to ferromagnetic at a critical pressure of $\,\approx\,$2\,GPa, which is likely characterized by the moments dominantly lying within the $ab$ plane (FM$_{ab}$). The AFM$_{ab}$-FM$_{ab}$ transition at such a relatively low pressure is supported by our DFT calculations. Furthermore, our experimental and theoretical results indicate that EuCd$_2$As$_2$ moves closer to the sought-for FM$_c$ state (moments $\parallel$ $c$) with increasing pressure further. We predict that a pressure of $\approx$\,23\,GPa will stabilize the FM$_c$ state, if Eu remains in a 2+ valence state. Thus, our work establishes hydrostatic pressure as a key tuning parameter that (i) allows for a continuous tuning between magnetic ground states in a single sample of EuCd$_2$As$_2$ and (ii) enables the exploration of the interplay between magnetism and topology and thereby motivates a series of future experiments on this magnetic Weyl semimetal.

Effects of spin-phonon coupling in frustrated Heisenberg models

The existence and stability of spin-liquid phases represent a central topic in the field of frustrated magnetism. While a few examples of spin-liquid ground states are well established in specific models (e.g. the Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice), recent investigations have suggested the possibility of their appearance in several Heisenberg-like models on frustrated lattices. An important related question concerns the stability of spin liquids in the presence of small perturbations in the Hamiltonian. In this respect, the magnetoelastic interaction between spins and phonons represents a relevant and physically motivated perturbation, which has been scarcely investigated so far. In this work, we study the effect of the spin-phonon coupling on prototypical models of frustrated magnetism. We adopt a variational framework based upon Gutzwiller-projected wave functions implemented with a spin-phonon Jastrow factor, providing a full quantum treatment of both spin and phonon degrees of freedom. The results on the frustrated $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model on one- and two-dimensional (square) lattices show that, while a valence-bond crystal is prone to lattice distortions, a gapless spin liquid is stable for small spin-phonon couplings. In view of the ubiquitous presence of lattice vibrations, our results are particularly important to demonstrate the possibility that gapless spin liquids may be realized in real materials.

Spin Vortex Crystal Order in Organic Triangular Lattice Compound

Organic salts represent an ideal experimental playground for studying the interplay between magnetic and charge degrees of freedom, which has culminated in the discovery of several spin-liquid candidates, such as $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ ($κ$-Cu). Recent theoretical studies indicate the possibility of chiral spin liquids stabilized by ring-exchange, but the parent states with chiral magnetic order have not been observed in this material family. In this work, we discuss the properties of the recently synthesized $κ$-(BETS)$_2$Mn[N(CN)$_2$]$_3$ ($κ$-Mn). Based on analysis of specific heat, magnetic torque, and NMR measurements combined with ab initio calculations, we identify a spin-vortex crystal order. These observations definitively confirm the importance of ring-exchange in these materials, and support the proposed chiral spin-liquid scenario for triangular lattice organics.

Electron-Phonon Coupling and Electron-Phonon Scattering in SrVO$_3$

Understanding the physics of strongly correlated electronic systems has been a central issue in condensed matter physics for decades. In transition metal oxides, strong correlations characteristic of narrow $d$ bands is at the origin of such remarkable properties as the Mott gap opening, enhanced effective mass, and anomalous vibronic coupling, to mention a few. SrVO$_3$, with V$^{4+}$ in a $3d^1$ electronic configuration is the simplest example of a 3D correlated metallic electronic system. Here, we focus on the observation of a (roughly) quadratic temperature dependence of the inverse electron mobility of this seemingly simple system, which is an intriguing property shared by other metallic oxides. The systematic analysis of electronic transport in SrVO$_3$ thin films discloses the limitations of the simplest picture of e-e correlations in a Fermi liquid; instead, we show that the quasi-2D topology of the Fermi surface and a strong electron-phonon coupling, contributing to dress carriers with a phonon cloud, play a pivotal role on the reported electron spectroscopic, optical, thermodynamic and transport data. The picture that emerges is not restricted to SrVO$_3$ but can be shared with other $3d$ and $4d$ metallic oxides.

Magnetoelastic coupling and effects of uniaxial strain in $α$-RuCl$_3$ from first principles

We present first-principles results on the magnetoelastic coupling in $α$-RuCl$_3$ and uncover a striking dependence of the magnetic coupling constants on strain effects. Different magnetic interactions are found to respond very unequally to variations in the lattice, with the Kitaev interaction being the most sensitive. Exact diagonalization results on our magnetoelastic model reproduce recent measurements of the structural Grüneisen parameter and explain the origin of the negative magnetostriction of $α$-RuCl$_3$, disentangling contributions related to different anisotropic interactions and g factors. Uniaxial strain perpendicular to the honeycomb planes is predicted to reorganize the relative coupling strengths, strongly enhancing the Kitaev interaction while simultaneously weakening the other anisotropic exchanges under compression. Uniaxial strain may therefore pose a fruitful route to experimentally tune $α$-RuCl$_3$ nearer to the Kitaev limit.

Anomalous Quantum Oscillations in a Heterostructure of Graphene on a Proximate Quantum Spin Liquid

The quasi two-dimensional Mott insulator $α$-RuCl$_3$ is proximate to the sought-after Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). In a layer of $α$-RuCl$_3$ on graphene the dominant Kitaev exchange is further enhanced by strain. Recently, quantum oscillation (QO) measurements of such $α$-RuCl$_3$ / graphene heterostructures showed an anomalous temperature dependence beyond the standard Lifshitz-Kosevich (LK) description. Here, we develop a theory of anomalous QO in an effective Kitaev-Kondo lattice model in which the itinerant electrons of the graphene layer interact with the correlated magnetic layer via spin interactions. At low temperatures a heavy Fermi liquid emerges such that the neutral Majorana fermion excitations of the Kitaev QSL acquire charge by hybridising with the graphene Dirac band. Using ab-initio calculations to determine the parameters of our low energy model we provide a microscopic theory of anomalous QOs with a non-LK temperature dependence consistent with our measurements. We show how remnants of fractionalized spin excitations can give rise to characteristic signatures in QO experiments.

Modified Curie-Weiss Law for $j_{\rm eff}$ Magnets

In spin-orbit-coupled magnetic materials, the usually applied Curie-Weiss law can break down. This is due to potentially sharp temperature-dependence of the local magnetic moments. We therefore propose a modified Curie-Weiss formula suitable for analysis of experimental susceptibility. We show for octahedrally coordinated materials of $d^5$ filling that the Weiss constant obtained from the improved formula is in excellent agreement with the calculated Weiss constant from microscopic exchange interactions. Reanalyzing the measured susceptibility of several Kitaev candidate materials with the modified formula resolves apparent discrepancies between various experiments regarding the magnitude and anisotropies of the underlying magnetic couplings.

Containment efficiency and control strategies for the Corona pandemic costs

The rapid spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) confronts policy makers with the problem of measuring the effectiveness of containment strategies, balancing public health considerations with the economic costs of social distancing measures. We introduce a modified epidemic model that we name the controlled-SIR model, in which the disease reproduction rate evolves dynamically in response to political and societal reactions. An analytic solution is presented. The model reproduces official COVID-19 cases counts of a large number of regions and countries that surpassed the first peak of the outbreak. A single unbiased feedback parameter is extracted from field data and used to formulate an index that measures the efficiency of containment strategies (the CEI index). CEI values for a range of countries are given. For two variants of the controlled-SIR model, detailed estimates of the total medical and socio-economic costs are evaluated over the entire course of the epidemic. Costs comprise medical care cost, the economic cost of social distancing, as well as the economic value of lives saved. Under plausible parameters, strict measures fare better than a hands-off policy. Strategies based on current case numbers lead to substantially higher total costs than strategies based on the overall history of the epidemic.

Variational wave functions for the spin-Peierls transition in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with quantum phonons

We introduce variational wave functions to evaluate the ground-state properties of spin-phonon coupled systems described by the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Quantum spins and phonons are treated on equal footing within a Monte Carlo sampling, and different regimes are investigated. We show that the proposed variational Ansatz yields good agreement with previous density-matrix renormalization group results in one dimension and is able to accurately describe the spin-Peierls transition. This variational approach is neither constrained by the magnetoelastic-coupling strength nor by the dimensionality of the systems considered, thus allowing future investigations in more general cases, which are relevant to spin-liquid and topological phases in two spatial dimensions.

Analytic continuation of the self-energy via Machine Learning techniques

We develop a novel analytic continuation method for self-energies on the Matsubara domain as computed by quantum Monte Carlo simulations within dynamical mean field theory (QMC+DMFT). Unlike a maximum entropy (maxEn) procedure employed for the last thirty years, our approach is based on a machine learning (ML) technique in combination with the iterative perturbative theory impurity solver of the dynamical mean field theory self-consistent process (IPT+DMFT). The input and output training datasets for ML are simultaneously obtained from IPT+DMFT calculations on Matsubara and real frequency domains, respectively. The QMC+DMFT self-energy on real frequencies is determined from the -- usually noisy -- input QMC+DMFT self-energy on the Matsubara domain and the trained ML kernel. Our approach is free from both, bias of ML training datasets and from fitting parameters present in the maxEn method. We demonstrate the efficiency of the method on the testbed frustrated Hubbard model on the square lattice.

Soft and anisotropic local moments in 4$d$ and 5$d$ mixed-valence M$_2$O$_9$ dimers

We investigate via exact diagonalization of finite clusters the electronic structure and magnetism of M$_2$O$_9$ dimers in the mixed-valence hexagonal perovskites A$_3$B'M$_2$O$_9$ for various different fillings of 4$d$ and 5$d$ transition-metal M ions. We find that the magnetic moments of such dimers are determined by a subtle interplay of spin-orbit coupling, Hund's coupling, and Coulomb repulsion, as well as the electron filling of the M ions. Most importantly, the magnetic moments are anisotropic and temperature-dependent. This behavior is a result of spin-orbit coupling, magnetic field effects, and the existence of several nearly-degenerate electronic configurations whose proximity allows occupation of excited states already at room temperature. This analysis is consistent with experimental susceptibility measurements for a variety of dimer-based materials. Furthermore, we perform a survey of A$_3$B'M$_2$O$_9$ materials and propose ground-state phase diagrams for the experimentally relevant M fillings of $d^{4.5}$, $d^{3.5}$ and $d^{2.5}$. Finally, our results show that the usually applied Curie-Weiss law with a constant magnetic moment cannot be used in these spin-orbit-coupled materials.

Lattice dynamics in the spin-1/2 frustrated kagome compound herbertsmithite

We investigate the lattice dynamics in the spin-1/2 frustrated kagome compound herbertsmithite ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$ by a combination of infrared spectroscopy measurements and ab initio density functional theory calculations, and provide an unambiguous assignment of infrared-active lattice vibrations involving in-plane and out-of-plane atom displacements in the kagome layers. Upon cooling, non-thermal red-shifts and broadening appear specifically for modes that deform the kagome layer or affect the Cu-O-Cu bond angles, thus creating pronounced modifications of the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling. Our results indicate the presence of a strong magnetoelastic coupling to the spin system. We discuss the effects of this coupling and its relation to recent experiments reporting a global symmetry reduction of the kagome lattice symmetry.

Electronic properties of α-RuCl3 in proximity to graphene

In the pursuit of developing routes to enhance magnetic Kitaev interactions in α-RuCl3, as well as probing doping effects, we investigate the electronic properties of α-RuCl3 in proximity to graphene. We study α-RuCl3/graphene heterostructures via ab initio density functional theory calculations, Wannier projection and non-perturbative exact diagonalization methods. We show that α-RuCl3 becomes strained when placed on graphene and charge transfer occurs between the two layers, making α-RuCl3 (graphene) lightly electron-doped (hole-doped). This gives rise to an insulator to metal transition in α-RuCl3 with the Fermi energy located close to the bottom of the upper Hubbard band of the t2g manifold. These results suggest the possibility of realizing metallic and even exotic superconducting states. Moreover, we show that in the strained α-RuCl3 monolayer the Kitaev interactions are enhanced by more than 50% compared to the unstrained bulk structure. Finally, we discuss scenarios related to transport experiments in α-RuCl3/graphene heterostructures.
