Three-layer water flows: Dirichlet-Neumann operators and approximations

The object of investigation in this paper are the nonlinear equations of motion for two-dimensional inviscid water flows with piecewise constant density stratification in a three-layer fluid with a flat bottom, a free surface and two interfaces. We establish a Hamiltonian formulation for the nonlinear governing equations in this setup. The Hamiltonian of the system and the equations of motion of the surface and of the interfaces are expressed with the help of the Dirichlet-Neumann (DN) operators, which are introduced for each of the layers. Then, the linear equations for small amplitudes of the elevation of the surface and of the interfaces in the leading order are derived from which a bi-cubic equation for the dispersion relation is obtained, whose solutions are analysed. The six real solutions for the possible propagation speeds (three positive, related to right-moving waves and three negative, related to left-moving waves) have magnitudes of different order. Upper and lower bounds for the previously mentioned roots are also given in terms of the coefficients of the equation. Subsequently, approximate formulae for the propagation speeds are derived. The importance of the DN operators is further illustrated in a separate analysis of the three-layer model with flat surface (rigid lid). The full nonlinear evolution equations are expressed again in terms of the DN operators, and the equations in the linear regime and the weakly nonlinear propagation regime (the Boussinesq approximation) are derived by a proper expansion of the DN operators. Limits to the two-layer free surface model are obtained as well. The obtained results are applicable to internal waves in lakes and in the ocean as well as to laboratory experiments with three superimposed fluid layers.

Flow kinematics for equatorial coupled surface and internal waves

We study the propagation of coupled surface and internal equatorial internal waves. A model of two vertically stratified fluid layers with different constant densities is employed. Taking Coriolis forces into account, we derive explicit solutions to the linearized governing equations which assumes irrotational fluid motion in both layers separately, and further obtain the dispersion relation which determines the phase speeds of propagating surface and internal waves. We prove a result on solutions to the dispersion relations which greatly simplifies our subsequent analysis of the nonlinear dynamical systems which describe the motion of the fluid in the upper layer. Phase portraits for all possible streamlines in both fluid layers are presented, while furthermore a Lagrangian description of the fluid flow is obtained, and the particle trajectories of the fluid particles are determined.

Modelling intermediate internal waves with currents and variable bottom

A model for internal interfacial waves between two layers of fluid in the presence of current and variable bottom is studied in the flat-surface approximation. Fluids are assumed to be incompressible and inviscid. Another assumption is that the upper layer is considerably deeper with a lower density than the lower layer. The fluid dynamics is presented in Hamiltonian form with appropriate Dirichlet-Neumann operators for the two fluid domains, and the depth-dependent current is taken into account. The well known integrable Intermediate Long Wave Equation (ILWE) is derived as an asymptotic internal waves model in the case of flat bottom. For a non-flat bottom the ILWE is with variable coefficients. Two limits of the ILWE lead to the integrable Benjamin-Ono and Korteweg-de Vries equations. Higher-order ILWE is obtained as well.

Modelling surface waves on shear current with quadratic depth-dependence

The currents in the ocean have a serious impact on ocean dynamics, since they affect the transport of mass and thus the distribution of salinity, nutrients and pollutants. In many physically important situations the current depends quadratic-ally on the depth. We consider a single layer of fluid and study the propagation of the surface waves in the presence of depth-dependent current with quadratic profile. We select the scale of parameters and quantities, which are typical for the Boussinesq propagation regime (long wave and small amplitude limit) and we also derive the well known KdV model for the surface waves interacting with current.

Nonlinear two-dimensional water waves with arbitrary vorticity

We consider the two-dimensional water-wave problem with a general non-zero vorticity field in a fluid volume with a flat bed and a free surface. The nonlinear equations of motion for the chosen surface and volume variables are expressed with the aid of the Dirichlet-Neumann operator and the Green function of the Laplace operator in the fluid domain. Moreover, we provide new explicit expressions for both objects. The field of a point vortex and its interaction with the free surface is studied as an example. In the small-amplitude long-wave Boussinesq and KdV regimes, we obtain appropriate systems of coupled equations for the dynamics of the point vortex and the time evolution of the free surface variables.

Hamiltonian description of internal ocean waves with Coriolis force

The interfacial internal waves are formed at the pycnocline or thermocline in the ocean and are influenced by the Coriolis force due to the Earth's rotation. A derivation of the model equations for the internal wave propagation taking into account the Coriolis effect is proposed. It is based on the Hamiltonian formulation of the internal wave dynamics in the irrotational case, appropriately extended to a {\it nearly} Hamiltonian formulation which incorporates the Coriolis forces. Two propagation regimes are examined, the long-wave and the intermediate long-wave propagation with a small amplitude approximation for certain geophysical scales of the physical variables. The obtained models are of the type of the well-known Ostrovsky equation and describe the wave propagation over the two spatial horizontal dimensions of the ocean surface.

On the intermediate long wave propagation for internal waves in the presence of currents

A model for the wave motion of an internal wave in the presence of current in the case of intermediate long wave approximation is studied. The lower layer is considerably deeper, with a higher density than the upper layer. The flat surface approximation is assumed. The fluids are incompressible and inviscid. The model equations are obtained from the Hamiltonian formulation of the dynamics in the presence of a depth-varying current. It is shown that an appropriate scaling leads to the integrable Intermediate Long Wave Equation (ILWE). Two limits of the ILWE leading to the integrable Benjamin-Ono and KdV equations are presented as well.

Camassa-Holm cuspons, solitons and their interactions via the dressing method

A dressing method is applied to a matrix Lax pair for the Camassa-Holm equation, thereby allowing for the construction of several global solutions of the system. In particular solutions of system of soliton and cuspon type are constructed explicitly. The interactions between soliton and cuspon solutions of the system are investigated. The geometric aspects of the Camassa-Holm equation ar re-examined in terms of quantities which can be explicitly constructed via the inverse scattering method.

Swirling fluid flow in flexible, expandable elastic tubes: variational approach, reductions and integrability

Many engineering and physiological applications deal with situations when a fluid is moving in flexible tubes with elastic walls. In the real-life applications like blood flow, there is often an additional complexity of vorticity being present in the fluid. We present a theory for the dynamics of interaction of fluids and structures. The equations are derived using the variational principle, with the incompressibility constraint of the fluid giving rise to a pressure-like term. In order to connect this work with the previous literature, we consider the case of inextensible and unshearable tube with a straight centerline. In the absence of vorticity, our model reduces to previous models considered in the literature, yielding the equations of conservation of fluid momentum, wall momentum and the fluid volume. We show that even when the vorticity is present, but is kept at a constant value, the case of an inextensible, unshearable and straight tube with elastics walls carrying a fluid allows an alternative formulation, reducing to a single compact equation for the back-to-labels map instead of three conservation equations. That single equation shows interesting instability in solutions when the vorticity exceeds a certain threshold. Furthermore, the equation in stable regime can be reduced to Boussinesq-type, KdV and Monge-Ampère equations equations in several appropriate limits, namely, the first two in the limit of long time and length scales and the third one in the additional limit of the small cross-sectional area. For the unstable regime, we numerical solutions demonstrate the spontaneous appearance of large oscillations in the cross-sectional area.

Hamiltonian model for coupled surface and internal waves in the presence of currents

We examine a two dimensional fluid system consisting of a lower medium bounded underneath by a flatbed and an upper medium with a free surface. The two media are separated by a free common interface. The gravity driven surface and internal water waves (at the common interface between the media) in the presence of a depth-dependent current are studied under certain physical assumptions. Both media are considered incompressible and with prescribed vorticities. Using the Hamiltonian approach the Hamiltonian of the system is constructed in terms of 'wave' variables and the equations of motion are calculated. The resultant equations of motion are then analysed to show that wave-current interaction is influenced only by the current profile in the 'strips' adjacent to the surface and the interface. Small amplitude and long-wave approximations are also presented.

The Dynamics of Flat Surface Internal Geophysical Waves with Currents

A two-dimensional water wave system is examined consisting of two discrete incompressible fluid domains separated by a free common interface. In a geophysical context this is a model of an internal wave, formed at a pycnocline or thermocline in the ocean. The system is considered as being bounded at the bottom and top by a flatbed and wave-free surface respectively. A current profile with depth-dependent currents in each domain is considered. The Hamiltonian of the system is determined and expressed in terms of canonical wave-related variables. Limiting behaviour is examined and compared to that of other known models. The linearised equations as well as long-wave approximations are presented.

The soliton solutions of the Degasperis-Procesi equations are constructed by the implementation of the dressing method. The form of the one and two soliton solutions coincides with the form obtained by Hirota's method.

Hamiltonian Approach to Internal Wave-Current Interactions in a Two-Media Fluid with a Rigid Lid

We examine a two-media 2-dimensional fluid system consisting of a lower medium bounded underneath by a flatbed and an upper medium with a free surface with wind generated surface waves but considered bounded above by a lid by an assumption that surface waves have negligible amplitude. An internal wave driven by gravity which propagates in the positive $x$-direction acts as a free common interface between the media. The current is such that it is zero at the flatbed but a negative constant, due to an assumption that surface winds blow in the negative $x$-direction, at the lid. We are concerned with the layers adjacent to the internal wave in which there exists a depth dependent current for which there is a greater underlying than overlying current. Both media are considered incompressible and having non-zero constant vorticities. The governing equations are written in canonical Hamiltonian form in terms of the variables, associated to the wave (in a presence of a constant current). The resultant equations of motion show that wave-current interaction is influenced only by the current profile in the 'strip' adjacent to the internal wave.

On the dynamics of internal waves interacting with the equatorial undercurrent

The interaction of the nonlinear internal waves with a nonuniform current with a specific form, characteristic for the equatorial undercurrent, is studied. The current has no vorticity in the layer, where the internal wave motion takes place. We show that the nonzero vorticity that might be occuring in other layers of the current does not affect the wave motion. The equations of motion are formulated as a Hamiltonian system.

One-dimensional weakly nonlinear model equations for Rossby waves

In this study we explore several possibilities for modelling weakly nonlinear Rossby waves in fluid of constant depth, which propagate predominantly in one direction. The model equations obtained include the BBM equation, as well as the integrable KdV and Degasperis-Procesi equations.

Dark solitons of the Qiao's hierarchy

We obtain a class of soliton solutions of the integrable hierarchy which has been put forward in a series of works by Z. Qiao. The soliton solutions are in the class of real functions approaching constant value fast enough at infinity, the so-called 'dark solitons'.

Waltzing peakons and compacton pairs in a cross-coupled Camassa-Holm equation

We consider singular solutions of a system of two cross-coupled Camassa-Holm (CCCH) equations. This CCCH system admits peakon solutions, but it is not in the two-component CH integrable hierarchy. The system is a pair of coupled Hamiltonian partial differential equations for two types of solutions on the real line, each of which separately possesses exp(-|x|) peakon solutions with a discontinuity in the first derivative at the peak. However, there are no self-interactions, so each of the two types of peakon solutions moves only under the induced velocity of the other type. We analyse the `waltzing' solution behaviour of the cases with a single bound peakon pair (a peakon couple), as well as the over-taking collisions of peakon couples and the antisymmetric case of the head-on collision of a peakon couple and a peakon anti-couple. We then present numerical solutions of these collisions, which are inelastic because the waltzing peakon couples each possess an internal degree of freedom corresponding to their `tempo' -- that is, the period at which the two peakons of opposite type in the couple cycle around each other in phase space. Finally, we discuss compacton couple solutions of the cross-coupled Euler-Poincaré (CCEP) equations and illustrate the same types of collisions as for peakon couples, with triangular and parabolic compacton couples. We finish with a number of outstanding questions and challenges remaining for understanding couple dynamics of the CCCH and CCEP equations.
