Electrostatic interaction of neutral semipermeable membranes

We consider an osmotic equilibrium between bulk solutions of polyelectrolyte bounded by semipermeable membranes and separated by a thin film of salt-free liquid. Although the membranes are neutral, the counter-ions of the polyelectrolyte molecules permeate into the gap and lead to a steric charge separation. This gives rise to a distance-dependent membrane potential, which translates into a repulsive electrostatic disjoining pressure. From the solution of the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann equation we obtain the distribution of the potential and of ions. We then derive an explicit formula for the pressure exerted on the membranes and show that it deviates from the classical van't Hoff expression for the osmotic pressure. This difference is interpreted in terms of a repulsive electrostatic disjoining pressure originating from the overlap of counterion clouds inside the gap. We also develop a simplified theory based on a linearized Poisson-Boltzmann approach. A comparison with simulation of a primitive model for the electrolyte is provided and does confirm the validity of the theoretical predictions Beyond the fundamental result that the neutral surfaces can repel, this mechanism not only helps to control the adhesion and long-range interactions of living cells, bacteria, and vesicles, but also allows us to argue that electrostatic interactions should play enormous role in determining behavior and functions of systems bounded by semipermeable membranes.

Quantum diffusion

Quantum diffusion is studied via dissipative Madelung hydrodynamics. Initially the wave packet spreads ballistically, than passes for an instant through normal diffusion and later tends asymptotically to a sub-diffusive law. It is shown that the apparent quantum diffusion coefficient is not a universal physical parameter since it depends on the initial wave packet preparation. The overdamped quantum diffusion of an electron in the field of a periodic potential is also investigated; in this case the wave packet spreads logarithmically in time. Thermo-quantum diffusion of heavier particles as hydrogen, deuterium and tritium atoms in periodic potentials is studied and a simple estimate of the tunneling effect is obtained in the frames of a quasi-equilibrium semiclassical approach. The effective thermo-quantum temperature is also discussed in relation to the known temperature dependence of muon diffusivity in solids.

Quantum hydrodynamics of electron gases

Electron gases in metals are described as quantum charged Newtonian viscous fluids experiencing Ohmic Darcy friction on the solid lattice ions as well. The dispersion relation of the electron acoustic waves is derived, which shows the existence of new quantum diffusion processes. The electric double layer near a metal surface is studied, which exhibits a quantum oscillatory-decaying behavior different from the Friedel oscillations.

Towards nonlinear quantum Fokker-Planck equations

It is demonstrated how the equilibrium semiclassical approach of Coffey et al. can be improved to describe more correctly the evolution. As a result a new semiclassical Klein-Kramers equation for the Wigner function is derived, which remains quantum for a free quantum Brownian particle as well. It is transformed to a semiclassical Smoluchowski equation, which leads to our semiclassical generalization of the classical Einstein law of Brownian motion derived before. A possibility is discussed how to extend these semiclassical equations to nonlinear quantum Fokker-Planck equations based on the Fisher information.

Thermo-quantum diffusion

A new approach to thermo-quantum diffusion is proposed and a nonlinear quantum Smoluchowski equation is derived, which describes classical diffusion in the field of the Bohm quantum potential. A nonlinear thermo-quantum expression for the diffusion front is obtained, being a quantum generalization of the classical Einstein law. The quantum diffusion at zero temperature is also described and a new dependence of the position dispersion on time is derived. A stochastic Bohm-Langevin equation is also proposed.

Nonlinear theory of quantum Brownian motion

A nonlinear theory of quantum Brownian motion in classical environment is developed based on a thermodynamically enhanced nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The latter is transformed via the Madelung transformation into a nonlinear quantum Smoluchowski-like equation, which is proven to reproduce key results from quantum and classical physics. The application of the theory to a free quantum Brownian particle results in a nonlinear dependence of the position dispersion on time, being quantum generalization of the Einstein law of Brownian motion. It is shown that the time of decoherence for the transition from quantum to classical diffusion is proportional to the square of the thermal de Broglie wavelength divided by the Einstein diffusion constant.

On the rheology of a liquid-vapor interface

The mass and momentum balances are theoretically studied in heterogeneous two-component systems. Following Gibbs the system is presented as two bulk and a single surface phases. Comparing the equations derived with some typical rheological models, useful information about the location of the interface is obtained. It was demonstrated that the surface phase for insoluble surfactants coincides with the equimolecular interface, while for soluble ones it is placed on the surface of total mass density zero excess. In both cases the surface phase is close to the surface of tension and kinematic surface.

Drainage of foam films

A brief review of the classical theory of foam film drainage is presented as well as a new theory accounting for the effect of thickness non-homogeneities in the film developed by the film drainage.

Resonant diffusion on solid surfaces

A new approach to Brownian motion of atomic clusters on solid surfaces is developed. The main topic discussed is the dependence of the diffusion coefficient on the fit between the surface static potential and the internal cluster configuration. It is shown this dependence is non-monotonous, which is the essence of the so-called resonant diffusion. Assuming quicker inner motion of the cluster than its translation, adiabatic separation of these variables is possible and a relatively simple expression for the diffusion coefficient is obtained. In this way, the role of cluster vibrations is accounted for, thus leading to a more complex resonance in the cluster surface mobility.

Is Einstein's relation D = kTU always true?

The validity of Einstein's fluctuation-dissipation relation is discussed in respect to the type of relaxation in an isothermal system. The first model, presuming isothermic fluctuations, leads to the Einstein formula. The second model supposes adiabatic fluctuations and yields another relation between the diffusion coefficient and mobility of a Brownian particle. A new approach to relaxations in quantum systems is also proposed that demonstrates applicability only of the adiabatic model for description of the quantum Brownian dynamics.

Brownian motion of molecules: the classical theory

A short review of the classical theory of Brownian motion is presented. A new method is proposed for derivation of the Fokker-Planck equations, describing the probability density evolution, from stochastic differential equations. It is also proven via the central limit theorem that the white noise is only Gaussian.
