Research and Development for Near Detector Systems Towards Long Term Evolution of Ultra-precise Long-baseline Neutrino Experiments

With the discovery of non-zero value of $θ_{13}$ mixing angle, the next generation of long-baseline neutrino (LBN) experiments offers the possibility of obtaining statistically significant samples of muon and electron neutrinos and anti-neutrinos with large oscillation effects. In this document we intend to highlight the importance of Near Detector facilities in LBN experiments to both constrain the systematic uncertainties affecting oscillation analyses but also to perform, thanks to their close location, measurements of broad benefit for LBN physics goals. A strong European contribution to these efforts is possible.

Detection of Earth-skimming UHE tau neutrino with the JEM-EUSO detector

The ultra high energy cosmic neutrinos are powerful astrophysical probes for both astrophysical mechanisms of particle acceleration and fundamental interactions. They open a window into the very distant and high-energy Universe that is difficult to access by any human means and devices. The possibility of detecting them in large exposure space-based apparatus, like JEM-EUSO, is an experimental challenge. In this paper we present an estimation of the feasibility of detection of UHE tau neutrino by the JEM-EUSO telescope. The interactions of tau-neutrino in sea water and Earth's crust have been investigated. The estimation of the propagation length and energy of the outgoing tau-lepton shows that if its decay occurs in the atmosphere close enough to the Earth's surface, e.g. below $\sim$ $5 km$ altitude, the cascade is intensive enough and the generated light can be detected from space. We have evaluated the geometrical aperture of the JEM-EUSO detector for the Earth-skimming (horizontal and upward-going) tau-neutrinos by making specific modifications to the standard CORSIKA code and developing an interface to the existing ESAF (EUSO Simulation and Analysis Framework) software.

Sensitivity of the JEM-EUSO telescope to gravity effects in neutrino-induced air showers

We examine the JEM-EUSO sensitivity to gravity effects in the context of Randall-Sundrum (RS) model with a single extra dimension and small curvature of the metric. Exchanges of reggeized Kaluza-Klein gravitons in the $t$-channel contribute to the inelastic cross-section for scattering of ultra-high-energy neutrinos off nucleons. Such effects can be detected in deeply penetrating quasi-horizontal air showers induced by interactions of cosmic neutrinos with atmospheric nucleons. For this reason, we calculate the expected number of quasi-horizontal air showers at the JEM-EUSO observatory as a function of two parameters of the RS model.

Beam monitoring and Near detector requirements for a Neutrino factory or long baseline beams

Neutrino Factory is a facility for future precision studies of neutrino oscillations. A so called near detector is essential for reaching the aimed precision of neutrino oscillation analysis. Main task of the near detector is to measure the flux of the neutrino beam. Such brilliant neutrino source like Neutrino Factory provides also opportunity for precision studies of various neutrino interaction processes in the near detector. We discuss design concepts of such a detector. Results of simulations of a high resolution scintillating fiber tracker show that it is capable to measure the neutrino flux through pure leptonic interactions with an uncertainty of the order of 1%. A full set-up of the near detector consisting of high granularity vertex detector, high resolution tracker and muon catcher is also presented.

HARP Collaboration results on the proton-nuclei interactions at few GeV energies

Recent results obtained by the HARP collaboration on the measurements of the double-differential production cross-section of positive and negative pions in proton interactions with nuclear targets from Beryllium to Lead are presented. They cover production at small angles (30-210 mrad) and relatively large momenta up to 8 GeV/c as well as large angles (0.35 - 2.15 rad) and small momenta (0.1 - 0.8 GeV/c). These results are relevant for a detailed understanding of neutrino fluxes in accelerator neutrino experiments, better prediction of atmospheric neutrino fluxes, optimization of a future neutrino factory design and for improvement of hadronic generators widely used by the HEP community in the simulation of hadronic interactions.
