Probing Topological Surface States and Conduction via Extended Defects in (Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_2$Te$_3$ Films

(Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_2$Te$_3$ alloys are non-degenerate topological insulators (TIs) whose Dirac point (DP) can be tuned within the bulk bandgap by varying the composition, effectively reducing bulk conduction while allowing surface carrier conduction. Magnetotransport measurements of a series of (Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_2$Te$_3$ thin films indicate electron-dominated conduction, with weak anti-localization attributed to topological surface states (TSSs). Due to the similarity of phase coherence lengths and twin boundary spacings ($\sim$100 nm), we consider the role of twin boundaries as additional conducting paths. Density functional theory calculations reveal an enhanced density of states near the Fermi level at $60^\circ$ twin boundaries, with 2D carrier concentration in excess of $3 \times 10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$. Furthermore, an analysis of the longitudinal magnetoconductivity yields an upper bound of $7.3 \times 10^{-4}$ S for twin boundary conductivity, resulting in a carrier mobility as high as $142$ cm$^2$/(V$\cdot$s). We discuss the role of twin boundaries in facilitating a transition from a massive Dirac cone dispersion to gapless, topologically protected surface states. Understanding the role of twin boundaries on carrier conduction in non-degenerate TIs is critical for the development of novel TI-based electronic devices.

Real-time MOKE microscopy made simple

We present a simple and effective instrument for simultaneous real-time imaging and hysteresis of the anisotropic magnetic domain dynamics in thin films using the Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE). We furthermore illustrate that magnetic imaging allows a more accurate interpretation of the magnetization reversal processes than the conventional hysteresis characterization. In particular, we present a case where the onset of a double-step reversal observed in imaging remains invisible in the spatially integrated hysteresis loops. When complemented by precise tuning of the external magnetic field orientation, our system reveals the singular anisotropic variations of the domain dynamics near the hard-axis in epitaxial thin films, thus shedding light on the reported, but as yet unexplained, hard axis coercivity behavior.

Presence of a (1x1) oxygen overlayer on bare ZnO(0001) surfaces and at Schottky interfaces

The atomic surface and interface structure of bare and metal-coated ZnO(0001) Zn-polar wafers were investigated via surface x-ray diffraction. All bare samples showed the presence of a (1x1) overlayer of oxygen atoms located at the on-top position above the terminating Zn atom, a structure predicted to be unstable by several density functional theory calculations. The same oxygen overlayer is clearly seen at the interface of ZnO with both elemental and oxidized metal contact layers. No significant atomic relaxations are observed at surfaces and interfaces processed under typical device fabrication conditions.

Fabrication of uniform half-shell magnetic nanoparticles and microspheres with applications as magnetically modulated optical nanoprobes

Magnetically Modulated Optical Nanoprobes (MagMOONs) are magnetic particles that indicate their angular orientation by emitting varying intensities of light for different orientations and have shown promise for a variety of applications. In this letter we describe a new method to fabricate uniform magnetic half-shell particles that can be used as MagMOONs. Cobalt was deposited onto commercially made polystyrene nanospheres and microspheres, using ultrahigh vacuum vapor deposition, producing particles with uniform size, shape and magnetic content. Additionally, the coercivity of the cobalt deposited on the nanospheres was enhanced compared to its bulk value.
