Random Latin squares and 2-dimensional expanders

Let X be a 2-dimensional simplicial complex. The degree of an edge e is the number of 2-faces of X containing e. The complex X is an ε-expander if the coboundary d_1(ϕ) of every Z_2-valued 1-cochain ϕ\in C^1(X;Z_2) satisfies |support(d_1(ϕ))| \geq ε|\supp(ϕ+d_0(ψ))| for some 0-cochain ψ. Using a new model of random 2-complexes we show the existence of an infinite family of 2-dimensional ε-expanders with maximum edge degree d, for some fixed ε>0 and d.

Sum Complexes and Uncertainty Numbers

Let p be a prime and let A be a subset of F_p. For k<p let X_{A,k} be the (k-1)-dimensional complex on the vertex set F_p with a full (k-2)-skeleton whose (k-1)-faces are k-subsets S of F_p such that the sum of the elements of S belongs to A. The homology groups of X_{A,k} with field coefficients are determined. In particular it is shown that if |A| \leq k then H_{k-1}(X_{A,k};F_p)=0. This implies a homological characterization of uncertainty numbers of subsets of F_p.

Homology of balanced complexes via the Fourier transform

Let G_0,...,G_k be finite abelian groups and let G_0*...*G_k be the join of the 0-dimensional complexes G_i. We give a characterization of the integral k-coboundaries of subcomplexes of G_0*...*G_k in terms of the Fourier transform on the group G_0 \times ... \times G_k. This leads to an extension of a recent result of Musiker and Reiner on a topological interpretation of the cyclotomic polynomial.

Sum complexes - a new family of hypertrees

A k-dimensional hypertree X is a k-dimensional complex on n vertices with a full (k-1)-dimensional skeleton and \binom{n-1}{k} facets such that H_k(X;Q)=0. Here we introduce the following family of simplicial complexes. Let n,k be integers with k+1 and n relatively prime, and let A be a (k+1)-element subset of the cyclic group Z_n. The sum complex X_A is the pure k-dimensional complex on the vertex set Z_n whose facets are subsets σof Z_n such that |σ|=k+1 and \sum_{x \in σ}x \in A. It is shown that if n is prime then the complex X_A is a k-hypertree for every choice of A. On the other hand, for n prime X_A is k-collapsible iff A is an arithmetic progression in Z_n.

Inverse Conjecture for the Gowers norm is false

Let $p$ be a fixed prime number, and $N$ be a large integer. The 'Inverse Conjecture for the Gowers norm' states that if the "$d$-th Gowers norm" of a function $f:\F_p^N \to \F_p$ is non-negligible, that is larger than a constant independent of $N$, then $f$ can be non-trivially approximated by a degree $d-1$ polynomial. The conjecture is known to hold for $d=2,3$ and for any prime $p$. In this paper we show the conjecture to be false for $p=2$ and for $d = 4$, by presenting an explicit function whose 4-th Gowers norm is non-negligible, but whose correlation any polynomial of degree 3 is exponentially small. Essentially the same result (with different correlation bounds) was independently obtained by Green and Tao \cite{gt07}. Their analysis uses a modification of a Ramsey-type argument of Alon and Beigel \cite{ab} to show inapproximability of certain functions by low-degree polynomials. We observe that a combination of our results with the argument of Alon and Beigel implies the inverse conjecture to be false for any prime $p$, for $d = p^2$.

Leray numbers of projections and a topological Helly type theorem

Let X be a simplicial complex on the vertex set V. The rational Leray number L(X) of X is the minimal d such that the rational reduced homology of any induced subcomplex of X vanishes in dimensions d and above. Let πbe a simplicial map from X to a simplex Y, such that the cardinality of the preimage of any point in |Y| is at most r. It is shown that L(π(X)) \leq r L(X)+r-1. One consequence is a topological extension of a Helly type result of Amenta.

Intersections of Leray complexes and regularity of monomial ideals

For a simplicial complex X and a field K, let h_i(X)=\dim \tilde{H}_i(X;K). It is shown that if X,Y are complexes on the same vertex set, then for all k h_{k-1}(X\cap Y) \leq \sum_{σ\in Y} \sum_{i+j=k} h_{i-1}(X[σ])\cdot h_{j-1}(\lk(Y,σ)) . A simplicial complex X is d-Leray over K, if h_i(Y)=0 for all induced subcomplexes Y \subset X and i \geq d. Let L_K(X) denote the minimal d such that X is d-Leray over K. The above theorem implies that if X,Y are simplicial complexes on the same vertex set then L_K(X \cap Y) \leq L_K(X) +L_K(Y). Reformulating this inequality in commutative algebra terms, we obtain the following result conjectured by Terai: If I,J are square-free monomial ideals in S=K[x_1,...,x_n], then reg(I+J) \leq reg(I)+reg(J)-1 where reg(I) denotes the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of I.

An uncertainty inequality for finite abelian groups

Let G be a finite abelian group of order n. For a complex valued function f on G, let \fht denote the Fourier transform of f. The uncertainty inequality asserts that if f \neq 0 then |supp(f)| |supp(\fht)| \geq n. Answering a question of Terence Tao, the following improvement of the classical inequality is shown: Let d_1<d_2 be two consecutive divisors of n. If d_1 \leq k=|supp(f)| \leq d_2 then: |supp(\fht)| \geq \frac{n(d_1+d_2-k)}{d_1 d_2}
