On the classification of toric $2$-Fano manifolds: generic $\mathbb{P}^2$-bundles

In this paper, we advance the classification of toric 2-Fano manifolds by continuing the investigation of the minimal projective bundle dimension $m(X) \in \{1,\dots,\dim(X)\}$ introduced in our previous work. This invariant captures the minimal degree of a dominating family of rational curves on $X$ and admits a natural combinatorial interpretation in terms of centered primitive collections. We develop an approach that relates, via toric blowdowns and flips, a toric Fano manifold $X$ to a toric manifold $Y$ that admits a $\mathbb{P}^{m(X)}$-bundle structure on a big open subset. We then compare positivity of the second Chern characters of $X$ and $Y$, and show that the only toric 2-Fano manifold $X$ with $m(X) = 2$ is $X\cong \mathbb{P}^2$. In the example-driven Appendix B, we demonstrate that extending this strategy to the case $m(X)>2$ requires either a substantially more detailed analysis of the combinatorics of primitive collections or a fundamentally new approach.

Separable rational connectedness and $k$-plane sections of hypersurfaces

Let X be a smooth hypersurface of degree d in P^n over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p. We show that X must be separably rationally connected and must contain a free line if either p is at least d or if p is at least d-1 and the defining equation has some partial derivative that is not too singular. We also show that X must be separably rationally connected in any characteristic if d = 4 and n is sufficiently large. Along the way, we generalize results on the spaces of k-planes in X to characteristic p and connect some of these questions to the spaces of linear sections of X.

On the asymptotic enumerativity property for Fano manifolds

We study the enumerativity of Gromov-Witten invariants where the domain curve is fixed in moduli and required to pass through the maximum possible number of points. We say a Fano manifold satisfies asymptotic enumerativity if such invariants are enumerative whenever the degree of the curve is sufficiently large. Lian and Pandharipande speculate that every Fano manifold satisfies asymptotic enumerativity. We give the first counterexamples, as well as some new examples where asymptotic enumerativity holds. The negative examples include special hypersurfaces of low Fano index and certain projective bundles, and the new positive examples include many Fano threefolds and all smooth hypersurfaces of degree $d \leq (n+3)/3$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$.

The minimal projective bundle dimension and toric $2$-Fano manifolds

Motivated by the problem of classifying toric $2$-Fano manifolds, we introduce a new invariant for smooth projective toric varieties, the minimal projective bundle dimension. This invariant $m(X)\in\{1, \dots,\dim(X)\}$ captures the minimal degree of a dominating family of rational curves on $X$ or, equivalently, the minimal length of a centrally symmetric primitive relation for the fan of $X$. We classify smooth projective toric varieties with $m(X)\geq \dim(X)-2$, and show that projective spaces are the only $2$-Fano manifolds among smooth projective toric varieties with $m(X)\in\{1, \dim(X)-2,\dim(X)-1,\dim(X)\}$.

Rational curves on del Pezzo surfaces in positive characteristic

We study the space of rational curves on del Pezzo surfaces in positive characteristic. For most primes p we prove the irreducibility of the moduli space of rational curves of a given nef class, extending results of Testa in characteristic 0. We also investigate the principles of Geometric Manin's Conjecture for weak del Pezzo surfaces. In the course of this investigation, we give examples of weak del Pezzo surfaces defined over $\mathbb{F}_{2}(t)$ or $\mathbb{F}_{3}(t)$ such that the exceptional sets in Manin's Conjecture are Zariski dense.

Bounds on the Picard rank of toric Fano varieties with minimal curve constraints

We study the Picard rank of smooth toric Fano varieties possessing families of minimal rational curves of given degree. We discuss variants of a conjecture of Chen-Fu-Hwang and prove a version of their statement that recovers the original conjecture in sufficiently high dimension. We also prove new cases of the original conjecture for high degrees in all dimensions. Our main tools come from toric Mori theory and the combinatorics of Fano polytopes.

Moduli spaces of rational curves on Fano threefolds

We prove several classification results for the components of the moduli space of rational curves on a smooth Fano threefold. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Batyrev on the growth of the number of components as the degree increases. The key to our approach is Geometric Manin's Conjecture which predicts the number of components parameterizing free curves.

Restrictions on rational surfaces lying in very general hypersurfaces

We study rational surfaces on very general Fano hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^n$, with an eye toward unirationality. We prove that given any fixed family of rational surfaces, a very general hypersurface of degree $d$ sufficiently close to $n$ and $n$ sufficiently large will admit no maps from surfaces in that family. In particular, this shows that for such hypersurfaces, any rational curve in the space of rational curves must meet the boundary. We also prove that for any fixed ratio $α$, a very general hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^n$ of degree $d$ sufficiently close to $n$ will admit no maps from a surface satisfying $H^2 \geq αHK$, where $H$ is the pullback of the hyperplane class from $\mathbb{P}^n$ and $K$ is the canonical bundle on the surface.

Higher Fano Manifolds

In this paper we address Fano manifolds with positive higher Chern characters. They are expected to enjoy stronger versions of several of the nice properties of Fano manifolds. For instance, they should be covered by higher dimensional rational varieties, and families of higher Fano manifolds over higher dimensional bases should admit meromorphic sections (modulo the Brauer obstruction). Aiming at finding new examples of higher Fano manifolds, we investigate positivity of higher Chern characters of rational homogeneous spaces. We determine which rational homogeneous spaces of Picard rank $1$ have positive second Chern character, and show that the only rational homogeneous spaces of Picard rank $1$ having positive second and third Chern characters are projective spaces and quadric hypersurfaces. We also classify Fano manifolds of large index having positive second and third Chern characters. We conclude by discussing conjectural characterizations of projective spaces and complete intersections in terms of these higher Fano conditions.

Linear subspaces of hypersurfaces

Let $X$ be an arbitrary smooth hypersurface in $\mathbb{C} \mathbb{P}^n$ of degree $d$. We prove the de Jong-Debarre Conjecture for $n \geq 2d-4$: the space of lines in $X$ has dimension $2n-d-3$. We also prove an analogous result for $k$-planes: if $n \geq 2 \binom{d+k-1}{k} + k$, then the space of $k$-planes on $X$ will be irreducible of the expected dimension. As applications, we prove that an arbitrary smooth hypersurface satisfying $n \geq 2^{d!}$ is unirational, and we prove that the space of degree $e$ curves on $X$ will be irreducible of the expected dimension provided that $d \leq \frac{e+n}{e+1}$.

Positivity Results for spaces of rational curves

Let $X$ be a very general hypersurface of degree $d$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$. We investigate positivity properties of the spaces $R_e(X)$ of degree $e$ rational curves in $X$. We show that for small $e$, $R_e(X)$ has no rational curves meeting the locus of smooth embedded curves. We show that for $n \leq d$, there are no rational curves in the locus $Y \subset X$ swept out by lines. And we exhibit differential forms on a smooth compactification of $R_e(X)$ for every $e$ and $n-2 \geq d \geq \frac{n+1}{2}$.

Spaces of rational curves in complete intersections

We prove that the space of smooth rational curves of degree $e$ in a general complete intersection of multidegree $(d_1, ..., d_m)$ in $\PP^n$ is irreducible of the expected dimension if $\sum_{i=1}^m d_i <\frac{2n}{3}$ and $n$ is large enough. This generalizes the results of Harris, Roth and Starr \cite{hrs}, and is achieved by proving that the space of conics passing through any point of a general complete intersection has constant dimension if $\sum_{i=1}^m d_i$ is small compared to $n$.

Fibers of Projections and Submodules of Deformations

We bound the complexity of the fibers of the generic linear projection of a smooth variety in terms of a new family of invariants. These invariants are closely related to ideas of John Mather, and we give a simple proof of his bound on the Thom-Boardman invariants of a generic projection as an application.

Non-uniruledness results for spaces of rational curves in hypersurfaces

We prove that the sweeping components of the space of smooth rational curves in a smooth hypersurface of degree $d$ in $P^n$ are not uniruled if $(n+1)/2 \leq d \leq n-3$. We also show that for any positive integer $e$, the space of smooth rational curves of degree $e$ in a general hypersurface of degree $d$ in $P^n$ is not uniruled when $d \geq e \sqrt{n}$.

Fibers of Generic Projections

Let X be a smooth projective variety of dimension n in P^r. We study the fibers of a general linear projection pi: X --> P^{n+c}, with c > 0. When n is small it is classical that the degree of any fiber is bounded by n/c+1, but this fails for n >> 0. We describe a new invariant of the fiber that agrees with the degree in many cases and is always bounded by n/c+1. This implies, for example, that if we write a fiber as the disjoint union of schemes Y' and Y'' such that Y' is the union of the locally complete intersection components of Y, then deg Y'+deg Y''_red <= n/c+1 and this formula can be strengthened a little further. Our method also gives a sharp bound on the subvariety of P^r swept out by the l-secant lines of X for any positive integer l, and we discuss a corresponding bound for highly secant linear spaces of higher dimension. These results extend Ziv Ran's "Dimension+2 Secant Lemma".

Rational surfaces in index-one Fano hypersurfaces

We give the first evidence for a conjecture that a general, index-one, Fano hypersurface is not unirational: (i) a general point of the hypersurface is contained in no rational surface ruled, roughly, by low-degree rational curves, and (ii) a general point is contained in no image of a Del Pezzo surface.
