BASS XXVIII: Near-infrared Data Release 2, High-Ionization and Broad Lines in Active Galactic Nuclei

We present the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) Near-infrared Data Release 2 (DR2), a study of 168 nearby ($\bar z$ = 0.04, $z$ < 0.6) active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the all-sky Swift Burst Array Telescope X-ray survey observed with Very Large Telescope (VLT)/X-shooter in the near-infrared (NIR; 0.8 - 2.4 $μ$m). We find that 49/109 (45%) Seyfert 2 and 35/58 (60%) Seyfert 1 galaxies observed with VLT/X-shooter show at least one NIR high-ionization coronal line (CL, ionization potential $χ$ > 100 eV). Comparing the emission of the [Si vi] $λ$1.9640 CL with the X-ray emission for the DR2 AGN, we find a significantly tighter correlation, with a lower scatter (0.37 dex) than for the optical [O iii] $λ$5007 line (0.71 dex). We do not find any correlation between CL emission and the X-ray photon index $Γ$. We find a clear trend of line blueshifts with increasing ionization potential in several CLs, such as [Si vi] $λ$1.9640, [Si x] $λ$1.4300, [S viii] $λ$0.9915, and [S ix] $λ$1.2520, indicating the radial structure of the CL region. Finally, we find a strong underestimation bias in black hole mass measurements of Sy 1.9 using broad H$α$ due to the presence of significant dust obscuration. In contrast, the broad Pa$α$ and Pa$β$ emission lines are in agreement with the $M$-$σ$ relation. Based on the combined DR1 and DR2 X-shooter sample, the NIR BASS sample now comprises 266 AGN with rest-frame NIR spectroscopic observations, the largest set assembled to date.

A Small Satellite Version of a Broad-band Soft X-ray Polarimeter

We describe a new implementation of a broad-band soft X-ray polarimeter, substantially based on a previous design. This implementation, the Pioneer Soft X-ray Polarimeter (PiSoX) is a SmallSat, designed for NASA's call for Astrophysics Pioneers, small missions that could be CubeSats, balloon experiments, or SmallSats. As in the REDSoX Polarimeter, the grating arrangement is designed optimally for the purpose of polarimetry with broad-band focussing optics by matching the dispersion of the spectrometer channels to laterally graded multilayers (LGMLs). The system can achieve polarization modulation factors over 90%. For PiSoX, the optics are lightweight Si mirrors in a one-bounce parabolic configuration. High efficiency, blazed gratings from opposite sectors are oriented to disperse to a LGML forming a channel covering the wavelength range from 35 to 75 Angstroms (165 - 350 eV). Upon satellite rotation, the intensities of the dispersed spectra, after reflection and polarizing by the LGMLs, give the three Stokes parameters needed to determine a source's linear polarization fraction and orientation. The design can be extended to higher energies as LGMLs are developed further. We describe examples of the potential scientific return from instruments based on this design.

Relativistic components of the Ultra-Fast Outflow in the Quasar PDS 456 from Chandra/HETGS, NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observations

We present the spectral analysis of Chandra/HETGS and NuSTAR observations of the quasar PDS 456 from 2015, and XMM-Newton and NuSTAR archival data from 2013-2014, together with Chandra/HETGS data from 2003. We analyzed these three different epochs in a consistent way, looking for absorption features corresponding to highly ionized blueshifted absorption lines from H-like and He-like ions of iron (and nickel), as well as of other elements (O, Ne, Si, and S) in the soft band. We confirm the presence of a persistent ultra-fast outflow (UFO) with a velocity of v_out=-0.24 - -0.29c, previously detected. We also report the detection of an additional faster component of the UFO with a relativistic velocity of v_out=-0.48c. We implemented photoionization modeling, using XSTAR analytic model warmabs, to characterize the physical properties of the different kinematic components of the ultra-fast outflow and of the partial covering absorber detected in PDS 456. These two relativistic components of the ultra-fast outflow observed in the three epochs analyzed in this paper are powerful enough to impact the host galaxy of PDS 456 through AGN feedback.
