Unorientable supersymmetric compactifications of M-theory

We discuss orbifold compactifications of the type II string, where the orbifold combines a free action on a base manifold and the $(-1)^{\boldsymbol{F}_{\text{L}}}$ symmetry which acts by -1 on left-moving Ramond sectors. Such backgrounds can preserve minimal supersymmetry and lift to M-theory compactification on smooth unorientable manifolds.

Uniqueness of D=8 minimal supergravity with two vector multiplets

There exist only four known string theories with minimal supersymmetry in eight dimensions, whose low energy effective descriptions are given by minimal supergravity coupled to $l=18$, $10$, or $2$ vector multiplets. It has been argued that these numbers are uniquely fixed by consistency conditions of the effective theory. In this work, we investigate the protected couplings of minimal supergravity coupled to two vector multiplets under the assumption that the theory admits a duality symmetry of the form $\Gamma_0(N)\times \Gamma_0(N)\subset {\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z}) \times {\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ for some positive integer $N$. We show that consistency with anomaly cancellation, higher-dimensional uplifts, and gauge enhancement loci strongly constrains the allowed couplings and isolates a unique consistent theory in the BPS sector. In particular, we find that the Bianchi identity for the three-form flux cannot have gravitational contributions.

Modified Abelian Gauge Theories

The topological properties of field configurations in gauge theory contain important data about the (generalized) global symmetries of the theory as well as potential inconsistencies in the form of gauge anomalies. In this work we modify the topological classes of Abelian $p$-form fields, generating new global variants of gauge theories. These modifications implement constraints directly on the classifying space of the gauge field and its cohomology classes via homotopy fiber construction. This general approach allows us to investigate the universal effects of the constraints on the conserved global charges encoded in gauge characteristic classes. We further demonstrate that this procedure generically leads to new topological sectors introducing additional global charges and anomalies in the modified gauge theories.

Integral cubic form of 5D minimal supergravities and non-perturbative anomalies in 6D (1,0) theories

A five-dimensional minimal supergravity theory coupled to vector and hypermultiplets is specified by a set of trilinear couplings, given by an intersection form $C_{IJK}$, and gravitational couplings specified by an integer-valued vector $a_I$ and is consistent when these data define an integral cubic form. For every Calabi-Yau threefold reduction of M-theory, this condition is satisfied automatically. Via suitable redefinitions of the basis of 5D vectors, this is also shown to be the case for the circle reductions of six-dimensional anomaly-free (1,0) theories. When the 6D theory has a $\mathbb{Z}_k$ gauge symmetry, we point out that the consistency of the circle reduction with nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}_k$ holonomy is closely related to 6D constraints derived by Monnier and Moore. These constraints are extended to semidirect products with continuous gauge groups $\mathbb{Z}_k \ltimes G$ and CHL-like circle compactifications. When $\mathbb{Z}_k$ acts on anti-self-dual tensor fields of 6D supergravity, there should be a nontrivial action of holonomy on the topological Green-Schwarz terms.

SymTFT for Continuous Symmetries: Non-linear Realizations and Spontaneous Breaking

It is well known that continuous symmetries of quantum fields can be realized non-linearly, e.g. in the context of sigma models, and can also be spontaneously broken on non-compact spacetimes. In this note we study how these effects are realized in the context of the topological symmetry theory for continuous symmetries. In particular, we explain coset realizations and their higher $p$-form symmetry versions from this perspective, as well as uplifts to higher groups and non-invertible symmetries. Moreover, using a setup with boundaries and corners, we explore spontaneous symmetry breaking scenarios for higher $p$-form symmetries as well as non-Abelian $0$-form symmetries.

Type IIB at eight derivatives: Five-Point Axio-Dilaton Couplings

We study the Type IIB eight-derivative effective Lagrangian beyond the quartic level, focusing on interactions involving gravitons and axio-dilatons. We show how to translate five-point scattering amplitudes into genuine five-point contact terms and extract all perturbative contributions to the effective action. Our result is consistent with T-duality predictions at tree level in the NSNS sector. We find that couplings with an even/odd number of scalars are neutral/charged under $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$, and use this feature to deduce their non-perturbative completion. The mixed NSNS/RR structures that cannot be deduced from the pure NSNS sector allow us to unambiguously fix the kinematics, which turns out to be the same for tree level and one loop. In Type IIA, these structures are essential for establishing agreement of string-theoretic corrections with the circle reduction of M-theory higher-derivative couplings.

Topology change and heterotic flux vacua

We investigate the interrelation between topology and Narain T-duality of heterotic flux vacua. We present evidence that all 5 and 4-dimensional Minkowski space heterotic flux backgrounds with 8 supercharges have a locus in the moduli space with a T-dual description in terms of a compactification on the product of a K3 surface with a circle or a torus. A test of this equivalence is provided by calculating the new supersymmetric index on both sides of the duality. We examine the implications of these dualities for CHL-like orbifolds that reduce the rank of the gauge group, as well as those that lead to minimal supersymmetry in 4 dimensions. We also discuss properties of flux vacua that preserve minimal supersymmetry in 4 dimensions that cannot be related to conventional compactifications by Narain T-duality. Along the way we point out a number of properties of these vacua, including the role played by non-trivial flat gerbes, the appearance of rational worldsheet CFTs in decompactification limits, and the role of attractive K3 surfaces in backgrounds with minimal supersymmetry. Finally, we discuss the dual pairs from the perspective of M-theory/heterotic duality.

SymTFTs and Non-Invertible Symmetries of 6d (2,0) SCFTs of Type $D$ from M-theory

We revisit 6d (2,0) SCFTs of type $D_N$ and their realization in M-theory, focusing on absolute variants of these theories and on their global finite 0- and 2-form symmetries. We derive the 7d SymTFT capturing these global symmetries from M-theory, both from the point of view of the low-energy supergravity action on $AdS_7\times \mathbb{RP}^4$ and from M2- and M5-branes giving rise to its topological operators. Along the way, results by Gukov, Hsin, and Pei are extended by keeping track of an additional 7d $\mathbb Z_2$ gauge field, associated to the outer automorphism of the $D_N$ algebra. In particular, we find an interplay of non-invertible symmetries and mixed anomalies for absolute 6d (2,0) $D_{4k}$ SCFTs with $k\ge 1$. We highlight several subtle points related to the non-orientability of $\mathbb{RP}^4$, the half-integral $G_4$-flux that threads it, and the non-commutativity of fluxes. All these also play an essential role in a holographic derivation of the anomaly polynomial of 6d (2,0) $D_N$ SCFTs.

The stringy geometry of integral cohomology in mirror symmetry

We examine the physical significance of torsion co-cycles in the cohomology of a projective Calabi-Yau three-fold for the (2,2) superconformal field theory (SCFT) associated to the non-linear sigma model with such a manifold as a target space. There are two independent torsion subgroups in the cohomology. While one is associated to an orbifold construction of the SCFT, the other encodes the possibility of turning on a topologically non-trivial flat gerbe for the NS-NS B-field. Inclusion of these data enriches mirror symmetry by providing a refinement of the familiar structures and points to a generalization of the duality symmetry, where the topology of the flat gerbe enters on the same footing as the topology of the underlying manifold.

Consistency of eight-dimensional supergravities: Anomalies, Lattices and Counterterms

We reexamine the question of quantum consistency of supergravities in eight dimensions. Theories with 16 supercharges suffer from the anomalies under the action of its discrete modular groups. In minimally supersymmetric theory coupled to Yang-Mills multiples of rank $l$ with the moduli space given by $\text{SO}(2,l)/ (\text{U}(1) \times \text{SO}(l))$, the existence of a counterterm together with the requirement that its poles and zeros correspond to the gauge symmetry enhancement imposes nontrivial constraints on the lattice. The counterterms needed for anomaly cancellation for all cases, that are believed to lead to consistent theories of quantum gravity ($l = 2,10,18$), are discussed.

SymTFTs for Continuous non-Abelian Symmetries

Topological defects and operators give a far-reaching generalization of symmetries of quantum fields. An auxiliary topological field theory in one dimension higher than the QFT of interest, known as the SymTFT, provides a natural way for capturing such operators. This gives a new perspective on several applications of symmetries, but fails to capture continuous non-Abelian symmetries. The main aim of this work is to fill this gap. Guided by geometric engineering and holography, we recover various known features of representation theory of the non-Abelian symmetry from a SymTFT viewpoint. Central to our approach is a duality between (flat) free Yang-Mills and non-Abelian BF theories. Our results extend naturally to models without supersymmetry.

Flat F-theory and friends

We discuss F-theory backgrounds associated to flat torus bundles over Ricci-flat manifolds. In this setting the F-theory background can be understood as a IIB orientifold with a large radius limit described by a supersymmetric compactification of IIB supergravity on a smooth, Ricci flat, but in general non-spin geometry. When compactified on an additional circle these backgrounds are T-dual to IIA compactifications on smooth non-orientable manifolds with a Pin-minus structure.

Flat equivariant gerbes: holonomies and dualities

We examine the role of global topological data associated to choices of holonomy for flat gauge fields in string compactification. Our study begins with perturbative string compactification on compact flat manifolds preserving 8 supercharges in 5 dimensions. By including non-trivial holonomy for Wilson lines in the heterotic string and for the B-field gerbe in the type II string we find worldsheet dualities that relate these backgrounds to other string compactifications. While our simple examples allow for explicit analysis, the concepts and some of the methods extend to a broader class of compactifications and have implications for string dualities, perturbative and otherwise.

Geometric flows and supersymmetry

We study the relation between supersymmetry and geometric flows driven by the Bianchi identity for the three-form flux $H$ in heterotic supergravity. We describe how the flow equations can be derived from a functional that appears in a rewriting of the bosonic action in terms of squares of supersymmetry operators. On a complex threefold, the resulting equations match what is known in the mathematics literature as "anomaly flow". We generalise this to seven- and eight-manifolds with G$_2$ or Spin(7) structures and discuss examples where the manifold is a torus fibration over a K3 surface. In the latter cases, the flow simplifies to a single scalar equation, with the existence of the supergravity solution implied by the long-time existence and convergence of the flow. We also comment on the $α'$ expansion and highlight the importance of using the proper connection in the Bianchi identity to ensure that the flow's fixed points satisfy the supergravity equations of motion.

Consistent truncations from the geometry of sphere bundles

In this paper, we present a unified perspective on sphere consistent truncations based on the classical geometric properties of sphere bundles. The backbone of our approach is the global angular form for the sphere. A universal formula for the Kaluza-Klein ansatz of the flux threading the $n$-sphere captures the full nonabelian isometry group $SO(n+1)$ and scalar deformations associated to the coset $SL(n+1,\mathbb R)/SO(n+1)$. In all cases, the scalars enter the ansatz in a shift by an exact form. We find that the latter can be completely fixed by imposing mild conditions, motivated by supersymmetry, on the scalar potential arising from dimensional reduction of the higher dimensional theory. We comment on the role of the global angular form in the derivation of the topological couplings of the lower-dimensional theory, and on how this perspective could provide inroads into the study of consistent truncations with less supersymmetry.

Type IIB at eight derivatives: insights from Superstrings, Superfields and Superparticles

We study the non-linear structure of Type IIB eight-derivative couplings involving the metric and the complexified three-form $G_3$. We show that, at the level of five-point string amplitudes, the kinematics in the maximally R-symmetry-violating sector is fully matched by standard superspace integrals and by superparticle amplitudes in M-theory on a two-torus. The latter approach is used to determine the complete effective action in this sector and to verify its invariance under SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality. We further comment on the general structure of the higher-point kinematics. Compactifications to lower dimensions provide both tests for our results and the arena for their applications. We verify that K3 reductions are fully consistent with the constraints of six-dimensional supersymmetry, and derive the four-dimensional flux scalar potential and axion kinetic terms at order $(α^{\prime})^{3}$ in Calabi-Yau threefold reductions.

Anomalies and Supersymmetry

We revisit quantum field theory anomalies, emphasizing the interplay with diffeomorphisms and supersymmetry. The Ward identities of the latter induce Noether currents of all continuous symmetries, and we point out how these consistent currents are replaced by their covariant form through the appearance of the Bardeen-Zumino currents, which play a central role in our study. For supersymmetry Ward identities, two systematic methods for solving the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions are discussed: anomaly inflow and anomaly descent. The simplest inflows are from supersymmetric Chern-Simons actions in one dimension higher, which are used to supersymmetrize flavor anomalies in $d=4$ and, for $d=2$ $\mathcal{N}=(p,q)$, flavor anomalies with $p,q\leq 3$ and Lorentz-Weyl anomalies with $p,q\leq 6$. Finally, we extend the BRST algebra and the subsequent descent, a necessity for the diffeomorphism anomaly in retrospect. The same modification computes the supersymmetrized anomalies, and determines the above Chern-Simons actions when these exist.

M5-brane Sources, Holography, and Argyres-Douglas Theories

We initiate a study of the holographic duals of a class of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories that are engineered by wrapping M5-branes on a sphere with an irregular puncture. These notably include the strongly-coupled field theories of Argyres-Douglas type. Our solutions are obtained in 7d gauged supergravity, where they take the form of a warped product of $AdS_5$ and a "half-spindle." The irregular puncture is modeled by a localized M5-brane source in the internal space of the gravity duals. Our solutions feature a realization of supersymmetry that is distinct from the usual topological twist, as well as an interesting Stückelberg mechanism involving the gauge field associated to a generator of the isometry algebra of the internal space. We check the proposed duality by computing the holographic central charge, the flavor symmetry central charge, and the dimensions of various supersymmetric probe M2-branes, and matching these with the dual Argyres-Douglas field theories. Furthermore, we compute the large-$N$ 't Hooft anomalies of the field theories using anomaly inflow methods in M-theory, and find perfect agreement with the proposed duality.
