Massive and Massless Quantum Cosmos

The recent analysis of quantum cosmology by S. Gielen [1] is extended by discussing the case of dust (in the flat case). The dependence of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation on the operator ordering of the Hamiltonian in the case of a position dependent mass is explored, together with the Λ dependence. As a main result, it is shown that matter enforces a quantized wave function as a solution of the corresponding Wheeler-DeWitt equation in the anti-de Sitter case.

Ricci cosmology

We revisit spatially flat FLRW cosmology in light of recent advances in standard model relativistic fluid dynamics. Modern fluid dynamics requires the presence of curvature-matter terms in the energy-momentum tensor for consistency. These terms are linear in the Ricci scalar and tensor, such that the corresponding cosmological model is referred to as ``Ricci cosmology''. No cosmological constant is included, there are no inflaton fields, bulk viscosity is assumed to be zero and we only employ standard Einstein gravity. Analytic solutions to Ricci cosmology are discussed, and we find that it is possible to support an early-time inflationary universe using only well-known ingredients from the Standard Model of physics and geometric properties of space-time.

Comment on Hawking radiation and trapping horizons

We consider dynamical black hole formation from a collapsing fluid described by a symmetric and flat FRW metric. Using the Hamilton-Jacobi method the local Hawking temperature for the formed trapping/apparent horizon is calculated. The local Hawking temperature depends on the tunneling path, which we take to be along a null direction $(Δs=0)$. We find that the local Hawking temperature depends directly on the equation of state of the collapsing fluid. We argue that Hawking radiation by quantum tunnelling from future inner and future outer trapping horizons is possible. However, only radiation from a space-like dynamical horizon has a chance to be observed by an external observer. Some comparison to existing literature is made.

Critical scalar field collapse in AdS_3: an analytic approach

We present an analytical solution of a massless scalar field collapsing in a three dimensional space-time with a negative cosmological constant, i.e. asymptotically AdS_3. The Einstein and scalar field equations are formulated using double null Poincare coordinates. Trapping horizons form when a critical parameter is p > 1. There are indications that the horizon radius r_AH scales like r_AH ~ (p-1)^(1/4) and the black hole mass as M ~ r_AH^2 ~ (p-1)^(1/2), i.e. with a critical mass exponent of 1/2.

Production of Prompt Photons: Holographic Duality and Thermalization

We study the production of prompt photons in strongly coupled out-of-equilibrium Super Yang-Mills plasma using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Our goal is to determine the photon emission spectrum at different stages of a thermalization process, which is modeled via the gravitational collapse of a thin spherical shell in AdS$_5$ space. Particular emphasis is placed on the limit of large frequencies, which we are able to treat analytically.

Holographic dilepton production in a thermalizing plasma

We determine the out-of-equilibrium production rate of dileptons at rest in strongly coupled N=4 Super Yang-Mills plasma using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Thermalization is achieved via the gravitational collapse of a thin shell of matter in AdS_5 space and the subsequent formation of a black hole, which we describe in a quasistatic approximation. Prior to thermalization, the dilepton spectral function is observed to oscillate as a function of frequency, but the amplitude of the oscillations decreases when thermal equilibrium is approached. At the same time, we follow the flow of the quasinormal spectrum of the corresponding U(1) vector field towards its equilibrium limit.

R-charge thermodynamical spectral sum rule in N=4 Yang-Mills theory

A sum rule related to the R-current correlator at vanishing three-momentum is derived in the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills field theory at infinite 't Hooft coupling. For reference it is compared to the one in the free field theory, i.e. at the one loop perturbative approximation.

Causal Viscous Hydrodynamics for Central Heavy-Ion Collisions

We study causal viscous hydrodynamics in the context of central relativistic heavy-ion collisions and provide details of a straightforward numerical algorithm to solve the hydrodynamic equations. It is shown that correlation functions of fluctuations provide stringent test cases for any such numerical algorithm. Passing these tests, we study the effects of viscosity on the temperature profile in central heavy-ion collisions. Also, we find that it is possible to counter-act the effects of viscosity to some extent by re-adjusting the initial conditions. However, viscous corrections are strongest for high-mass particles, signaling the breakdown of hydrodynamic descriptions for large eta/s.

Deciphering the properties of the medium produced in heavy ion collisions at RHIC by a pQCD analysis of quenched large $p_{\perp}$ $π^0$ spectra

We discuss the question of the relevance of perturbative QCD calculations for analyzing the properties of the dense medium produced in heavy ion collisions. Up to now leading order perturbative estimates have been worked out and confronted with data for quenched large $p_{\perp}$ hadron spectra. Some of them are giving paradoxical results, contradicting the perturbative framework and leading to speculations such as the formation of a strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma. Trying to bypass some drawbacks of these leading order analysis and without performing detailed numerical investigations, we collect evidence in favour of a consistent description of quenching and of the characteristics of the produced medium within the pQCD framework.

Transverse flow in relativistic viscous hydrodynamics

Hydrodynamic model simulations of Au-Au collisions at RHIC have indicated recently, that with improved simulations in the coming years, it may be feasible to quantify the viscosity of the matter produced in heavy ion collisions. To this end, a consistent fluid dynamic description of viscous effects is clearly needed. In this note, we observe that a recently used, approximate form of the 2nd order Israel-Stewart viscous hydrodynamic equations of motion cannot account consistently for the transverse flow fields, which are expected to develop in heavy ion collisions. We identify the appropriate equations of motion.

Dissipative Hydrodynamics and Heavy Ion Collisions

Recent discussions of RHIC data emphasized the exciting possibility that the matter produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions shows properties of a near-perfect fluid. Here, we aim at delineating the applicability of fluid dynamics, which is needed to quantify the size of corresponding dissipative effects. We start from the equations for dissipative fluid dynamics, which we derive from kinetic theory up to second order (Israel-Stewart theory) in a systematic gradient expansion. In model studies, we then establish that for too early initialization of the hydrodynamic evolution ($τ_0 \lsim 1$ fm/c) or for too high transverse momentum ($p_T \gsim 1$ GeV) in the final state, the expected dissipative corrections are too large for a fluid description to be reliable. Moreover, viscosity-induced modifications of hadronic transverse momentum spectra can be accommodated to a significant degree in an ideal fluid description by modifications of the decoupling stage. We argue that these conclusions, drawn from model studies, can also be expected to arise in significantly more complex, realistic fluid dynamics simulations of heavy ion collisions.

Has saturation physics been observed in deuteron-gold collisions at RHIC?

In the framework of the recently proposed saturation picture, we examine in a systematic way whether the nuclear modification factor measured for d-Au collisions at RHIC may be simply explained. The Cronin peak which is obtained at mid-rapidity around $k_{\bot}\simeq 3$ GeV may be reproduced at the proper height only by boosting the saturation momentum by an additional nuclear component as already shown in the literature. In this respect, mid-rapidity RHIC data cannot necessarily be seen as a probe of the saturation picture. The large rapidity ($η\simeq 3$) region allows us to test the shape of the unintegrated gluon distribution in the nucleus, investigating various parameterizations inspired by large rapidity solutions (of the BFKL and) of the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation. A satisfactory description of $R_{CP}$ at RHIC is obtained in the BK picture.

Particle Correlations in Saturated QCD Matter

We study quantitatively angular correlations in the two-particle spectrum produced by an energetic probe scattering off a dense hadronic target with sizeable saturation momentum. To this end, two parton inclusive cross sections for arbitrary projectiles with small color charge density are derived in the eikonal formalism. Our results are the following: For large momenta of the observed particles, the perturbative limit with characteristic back-to-back correlation is recovered. As the trigger momenta get closer to the saturation scale Q_s, the angular distribution broadens. When the momenta are significantly smaller than Q_s, the azimuthal distribution is broad but still peaked back-to-back. However, in a narrow momentum range (0.5 - 1.5) Q_s, we observe that the azimuthal correlation splits into a double peak with maxima displaced away from 180 degree. We argue that it is the soft multiple scattering physics that is responsible for the appearance of this shift in the angle of maximal correlation. We also point out that when the physical size of the projectile is particularly small, the double peak structure persists in a significantly wider range of final state momenta.

Saturation and parton level Cronin effect: enhancement vs suppression of gluon production in p-A and A-A collisions

We note that the phenomenon of perturbative saturation leads to transverse momentum broadening in the spectrum of partons produced in hadronic collisions. This broadening has a simple interpretation as parton level Cronin effect for systems in which saturation is generated by the "tree level" Glauber-Mueller mechanism. For systems where the broadening results form the nonlinear QCD evolution to high energy, the presence or absence of Cronin effect depends crucially on the quantitative behavior of the gluon distribution functions at transverse momenta kt outside the so called scaling window. We discuss the relation of this phenomenon to the recent analysis by Kharzeev-Levin-McLerran of the momentum and centrality dependence of particle production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC.
