Structure and Dynamics of the Sun's Interior Revealed by Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager

High-resolution helioseismology observations with the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) provide a unique three-dimensional view of the solar interior structure and dynamics, revealing a tremendous complexity of the physical processes inside the Sun. We present an overview of the results of the HMI helioseismology program and discuss their implications for modern theoretical models and simulations of the solar interior.

Probing the Sun's Near Surface Shear Layer using HMI Spherical Harmonic Coefficients

We have measured zonal and meridional components of subsurface flows up to a depth of 30 Mm below the solar surface by applying the technique of ring diagram on Dopplergrams which are constructed from the spherical harmonic (SH) coefficients. The SH coefficients are obtained from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) full-disk Dopplergrams. We find a good agreement and some differences between the flows obtained in this study with those from the traditional methods using direct Dopplergrams.

Subsurface flows associated with rotating sunspots

In this paper, we compare components of the horizontal flow below the solar surface in and around regions consisting of rotating and non-rotating sunspots. Our analysis suggests that there is a significant variation in both components of the horizontal flow at the beginning of sunspot rotation as compared to the non-rotating sunspot. In most cases, the flows in surrounding areas are relatively small. However, there is a significant influence of the motion on flows in an area closest to the sunspot rotation.
