Recombination of Shower Partons at High $p_T$ in Heavy-Ion Collisions

A formalism for hadron production at high \pt in heavy-ion collisions has been developed such that all partons hadronize by recombination. The fragmentation of a hard parton is accounted for by the recombination of shower partons that it creates. Such shower partons can also recombine with the thermal partons to form particles that dominate over all other possible modes of hadronization in the $3<p_T<8$ GeV range. The results for the high \pt spectra of pion, kaon, and proton agree well with experiments. Energy loss of partons in the dense medium is taken into account on the average by an effective parameter by fitting data, and is found to be universal independent of the type of particles produced, as it should. Due to the recombination of thermal and shower partons, the structure of jets produced in nuclear collisions is different from that in $pp$ collisions. The consequence on same-side correlations is discussed.

Proton Production in d+Au Collisions and the Cronin Effect

Proton production in the intermediate p_T region in d+Au collisions is studied in the parton recombination model. The recombination of soft and shower partons is shown to be important in central collisions, but negligible in peripheral collisions. It is found that the large nuclear modification factor for proton production can be well reproduced by a calculation of the 3-quark recombination process.

Critical Fluctuation of Wind Reversals in Convective Turbulence

The irregular reversals of wind direction in convective turbulence are found to have fluctuating intervals that can be related to critical behavior. It is shown that the net magnetization of a 2D Ising lattice of finite size fluctuates in the same way. Detrended fluctuation analysis of the wind reversal time series results in a scaling behavior that agrees with that of the Ising problem. The properties found suggest that the wind reversal phenomenon exhibits signs of self-organized criticality.

Fragmentation or Recombination at High p_T?

All hadronization processes, including fragmentation, are shown to proceed through recombination. The shower partons in a jet turn out to play an important role in describing the p_T spectra of hadrons produced in heavy-ion collisions. Due to the recombination of the shower partons with the soft thermal partons, the structure of jets produced in AA collisions is not the same as that of jets produced in pp collisions.

Fractional Energy Loss and Centrality Scaling

The phenomenon of centrality scaling in the high-\pt spectra of $π^0$ produced in Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt s=200$ GeV is examined in the framework of relating fractional energy loss to fractional centrality increase. A new scaling behavior is found where the scaling variable is given a power-law dependence on $N_{\rm part}$. The exponent $γ$ specifies the fractional proportionality relationship between energy loss and centrality, and is a phenomenologically determined number that characterizes the nuclear suppression effect. The implication on the parton energy loss in the context of recombination is discussed.

Comparison of Nuclear Suppression Effects on Meson Production at High p_T and p_L

The medium effect on the pion distribution at high $p_T$ in $AA$ collisions is compared to that of the pion distribution at high $p_L$ in $pA$ collisions. Both the suppression of the spectra and the energy losses of the measured pions are studied. Although the medium effect on $p_T$ is larger than on $p_L$, the difference is found surprisingly to be not as big as one would naively expect.

Scaling Distributions of Quarks, Mesons and Proton for all $p_T$, Energy and Centrality

We present the evidences for the existence of a universal scaling behavior of the production of $π^0$ at all transverse momenta in heavy-ion collisions at all centralities and all collision energies. The corresponding scaling behavior of the quarks is then derived just before the quarks recombine with antiquarks to form the pions. The degradation effect of the dense medium on the quark $p_T$ is derived from the scaling distribution. In the recombination model it is then possible to calculate the $p_T$ distributions of the produced proton and kaon, which are scaling also. Experimentally verifiable predictions are made. Implications of the existence of the scaling behavior are discussed.

Scaling behavior at high p_T and the p/pi ratio

We first show that the pions produced at high $p_T$ in heavy-ion collisions over a wide range of high energies exhibit a scaling behavior when the distributions are plotted in terms of a scaling variable. We then use the recombination model to calculate the scaling quark distribution just before hadronization. From the quark distribution it is then possible to calculate the proton distribution at high $p_T$, also in the framework of the recombination model. The resultant $p/π$ ratio exceeds one in the intermediate $p_T$ region where data exist, but the scaling result for the proton distribution is not reliable unless $p_T$ is high enough to be insensitive to the scale-breaking mass effects.

Centrality Scaling of the $p_T$ Distribution of Pions

From the preliminary data of PHENIX on the centrality dependence of the $π^0$ spectrum in $p_T$ at midrapidity in heavy-ion collisions, we show that a scaling behavior exists that is independent of the centrality. It is then shown that $ $ degrades with increasing $N_{\rm part}$ exponentially with a decay constant that can be quantified. A scaling distribution in terms of an intuitive scaling variable is derived that is analogous to the KNO scaling. No theoretical models are used in any part of this phenomenological analysis.

Strangeness Enhancement in the Parton Model

Strangeness enhancement in heavy-ion collisions is studied at the parton level by examining the partition of the new sea quarks generated by gluon conversion into the strange and non-strange sectors. The CTEQ parton distribution functions are used as a baseline for the quiescent sea before gluon conversion. By quark counting simple constraints are placed on the hadron yields in different channels. The experimental values of particle ratios are fitted to determine the strangeness enhancement factor. A quantitative measure of Pauli blocking is determined. Energy dependence between SPS and RHIC energies is well described. No thermal equilibrium or statistical model is assumed.

Inclusive Distributions for Hadronic Collisions in the Valon-Recombination Model

Inclusive distributions of soft production of mesons in hadronic collisions are calculated in the valon-recombination model. The new determination of the valon distributions from hard scattering data makes possible a tightly interrelated treatment of pion and kaon production in the fragmentation regions of proton, pion and kaon. Only one free parameter is used in the determination of the valon distribution in the kaon. No other adjustable parameter is needed to fit the $x$-distributions of the data on inclusive cross sections, except for the normalizations since the data are at fixed $p_T$. The success of the model in reproducing seven inclusive distributions suggests that there are two important mechanisms at work in soft production. One is that the structure of the hadron that fragments is highly relevant. The other is that the produced particles are formed by the recombination of quarks and antiquarks. These two aspects about hadrons in soft processes can be well described in the framework of the valon-recombination model.

Fluctuation of Gaps in Hadronization at Phase Transition

Event-by-event fluctuations of hadronic patterns in heavy-ion collisions are studied in search for signatures of quark-hadron phase transition. Attention is focused on a narrow strip in the azimuthal angle with small $Δy$. The fluctuations in the gaps between particles are quantified by simple measures. A scaling exponent $α$ is shown to exist around $T_c$. An index $ξ$ is shown to characterize the critical fluctuation; it is a numerical constant $ξ=0.05\pm0.01$. All the measures considered in this gap analysis are experimentally observable. Whether or not the theoretical predictions, based on simulations using 2-dimensional Ising model, are realistic for heavy-ion collisions, analysis of the experimental data suggested here should be carried out, since the existence of a scaling behavior is of interest in its own right.

Charge Fluctuations at Disoriented Chiral Transition

The signatures of the creation of a disoriented chiral condensate in heavy-ion collisions are studied in the Ginzburg-Landau description of chiral phase transition. Scaling properties are found that characterize the fluctuations of charged particles. There exists also an explicitly calculable measure that can directly be measured. Experimental procedures needed to find the signatures are discussed.

Parton Distributions in the Valon Model

The parton distribution functions determined by CTEQ at low $Q^2$ are used as inputs to test the validity of the valon model. The valon distributions in a nucleon are first found to be nearly $Q$ independent. The parton distribution in a valon are shown to be consistent with being universal, independent of the valon type. The momentum fractions of the partons in the valon add up separately to one. These properties affirm the validity of the valon model. The various distributions are parameterized for convenient application of the model.

Fluctuation Analysis of Human Electroencephalogram

The scaling behaviors of the human electroencephalogram (EEG) time series are studied using detrended fluctuation analysis. Two scaling regions are found in nearly every channel for all subjects examined. The scatter plot of the scaling exponents for all channels (up to 129) reveals the complicated structure of a subject's brain activity. Moment analyses are performed to extract the gross features of all the scaling exponents, and another universal scaling behavior is identified. A one-parameter description is found to characterize the fluctuation properties of the nonlinear behaviors of the brain dynamics.

Void Analysis of Hadronic Density Fluctuations at Phase Transition

The event-to-event fluctuations of hadron multiplicities are studied for a quark system undergoing second-order phase transition to hadrons. Emphasis is placed on the search for an observable signature that is realistic for heavy-ion collisions. It is suggested that in the 2-dimensional y-phi space the produced particles selected in a very narrow p_T window may exhibit clustering patterns even when integrated over the entire emission time. Using the Ising model to simulate the critical phenomenon and taking into account a p_T distribution that depends on the emission time, we study in the framework of the void analysis proposed earlier and find scaling behavior. The scaling exponents turn out to be larger than the ones found before for pure configurations without mixing. The signature is robust in that it is insensitive to the precise scheme of simulating time evolution. Thus it should reveal whether or not the dense matter created in heavy-ion collisions is a quark-gluon plasma before hadronization.
