Quantile Vector Autoregression without Crossing

This paper considers estimation and model selection of quantile vector autoregression (QVAR). Conventional quantile regression often yields undesirable crossing quantile curves, violating the monotonicity of quantiles. To address this issue, we propose a simplex quantile vector autoregression (SQVAR) framework, which transforms the autoregressive (AR) structure of the original QVAR model into a simplex, ensuring that the estimated quantile curves remain monotonic across all quantile levels. In addition, we impose the smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) penalty on the SQVAR model to mitigate the explosive nature of the parameter space. We further develop a Bayesian information criterion (BIC)-based procedure for selecting the optimal penalty parameter and introduce new frameworks for impulse response analysis of QVAR models. Finally, we establish asymptotic properties of the proposed method, including the convergence rate and asymptotic normality of the estimator, the consistency of AR order selection, and the validity of the BIC-based penalty selection. For illustration, we apply the proposed method to U.S. stock market data, highlighting the usefulness of our SQVAR method.

Improving Estimation of Portfolio Risk Using New Statistical Factors

Searching for new effective risk factors on stock returns is an important research topic in asset pricing. Factor modeling is an active research topic in statistics and econometrics, with many new advances. However, these new methods have not been fully utilized in asset pricing application. In this paper, we adopt the factor models, especially matrix factor models in various forms, to construct new statistical factors that explain the variation of stock returns. Furthermore, we evaluate the contribution of these statistical factors beyond the existing factors available in the asset pricing literature. To demonstrate the power of the new factors, U.S. monthly stock data are analyzed and the partial F test and double selection LASSO method are conducted. The results show that the new statistical factors bring additional information and add explanatory power in asset pricing. Our method opens a new direction for portfolio managers to seek additional risk factors to improve the estimation of portfolio returns.

High-Dimensional Vector Autoregression with Common Response and Predictor Factors

The reduced-rank vector autoregressive (VAR) model can be interpreted as a supervised factor model, where two factor modelings are simultaneously applied to response and predictor spaces. This article introduces a new model, called vector autoregression with common response and predictor factors, to explore further the common structure between the response and predictors in the VAR framework. The new model can provide better physical interpretations and improve estimation efficiency. In conjunction with the tensor operation, the model can easily be extended to any finite-order VAR model. A regularization-based method is considered for the high-dimensional estimation with the gradient descent algorithm, and its computational and statistical convergence guarantees are established. For data with pervasive cross-sectional dependence, a transformation for responses is developed to alleviate the diverging eigenvalue effect. Moreover, we consider additional sparsity structure in factor loading for the case of ultra-high dimension. Simulation experiments confirm our theoretical findings and a macroeconomic application showcases the appealing properties of the proposed model in structural analysis and forecasting.
