$\gamma_5$ in Dimensional Regularization: a Novel Approach

A new Dimensional Regularization of $\gamma_5$ is proposed. Cyclicity and Lorentz covariance are enforced. The extension to generic dimension is based on the integral representation of the trace of gamma's, presented in a previous paper.

On effective Chern-Simons Term induced by a Local CPT-Violating Coupling using $γ_5$ in Dimensional Regularization

We resume a long-standing, yet not forgotten, debate on whether a Chern-Simons birefringence can be generated by a local term $b_μ\barψγ^μγ_5ψ$ in the Lagrangian (where $b_μ$ are constants). In the present paper we implement a new way of managing $γ_5$ in dimensional regularization. Gauge invariance in the underlying theory (QED) is enforced by this choice of defining divergent amplitudes. We investigate the singular behavior of the vector meson two-point-function around the $m^2=0$ and $p^2=0$ point. We find that the coefficient of the effective Chern-Simons can be finite or zero. It depends on how one takes the limits: they cannot be interchanged due to the associate change of symmetry. For $m^2=0$ we evaluate also the self-mass of the photon at the second orderin $b_μ$. We find zero.

Managing $γ_5$ in Dimensional Regularization II: the Trace with more $γ_5$

In the present paper we evaluate the anomaly for the abelian axial current in a non abelian chiral gauge theory, by using dimensional regularization. This amount to formulate a procedure for managing traces with more than one $γ_5$. \par The suggested procedure obeys Lorentz covariance and cyclicity, at variance with previous approaches (e.g. the celebrated 't Hooft and Veltman's where Lorentz is violated) \par The result of the present paper is a further step forward in the program initiated by a previous work on the traces involving a single $γ_5$. The final goal is an unconstrained definition of $γ_5$ in dimensional regularization. Here, in the evaluation of the anomaly, we profit of the axial current conservation equation, when radiative corrections are neglected. This kind of tool is not always exploited in field theories with $γ_5$, e.g. in the use of dimensional regularization of infrared and collinear divergences.

Managing gamma_5 in Dimensional Regularization and ABJ Anomaly

An integral representation is proposed for the trace involving gamma_5 in dimensional regularization. Lorentz covariance is preserved. ABJ anomaly naturally follows. The Local Functional Equation associated to x-dependent chiral transformations is verified.

On the Spectrum of Lattice Massive SU(2) Yang-Mills

On the basis of extended simulations we provide some results concerning the spectrum of Massive SU(2) Yang-Mills on the lattice. We study the "time" correlator of local gauge invariant operators integrated over the remaining three dimensions. The energy gaps are measured in the isospin I=0,1 and internal spin J=0,1 channels. No correlation is found in the I=1,J=0 channel. In the I=1, J=1 channel and far from the critical mass value $m_c$ the energy gap roughly follows the bare value $m$ (vector mesons). In approaching the critical value $m_c$ at $β$ fixed, there is a bifurcation of the energy gap: one branch follows the value $m$, while the new is much larger and it shows a more and more dominant weight. This phenomenon might be the sign of two important features: the long range correlation near the fixed point at $β\to \infty$ implied by the low energy gap and the screening (or confining) mechanisms across the $m=m_c$ associated to the larger gap. The I=0, J=0,1 gaps are of the same order of magnitude, typically larger than the I=1, J=1 gap (for $m>>m_c$). For $m\sim m_c$ both I=0 gaps have a dramatic drop with minima near the value $m$. This behavior might correspond to the formation of I=0 bound states both in the J=0 and J=1 channels.

On the Weak Coupling Limit for Massive Yang-Mills

For small values of the gauge coupling constant, we compare the densities of the energy of the vacuum and of the order parameter, evaluated in the lattice Monte Carlo simulation and in the perturbative field theory at two loop (Minkowski). The continuum calculation allows a very good fit of the simulation results, away from the phase transition line. This confirms the conjecture that the lattice provides a regularization of the (nonrenormalizable) massive Yang-Mills and moreover it shows the physical meaning of the parameters used in the simulation.

Nonlinear Realization of the SU(5) Georgi-Glashow Model

The formulation of a grand unified field theory based on the nonlinearly realized SU(5) gauge group is presented. The tree-level action is constructed by requiring invariance under local left SU(5) gauge transformations, the existence of a weak power-counting bound and by imposing also an additional invariance under local right SU_C(3) X U_Q(1) transformations. The local functional equation associated to this latter invariance allows one to prove the absence of physical scalar modes with the quantum numbers of massless gauge bosons from the perturbative spectrum. Two independent mass invariants for the electroweak gauge bosons exist, although the gauge group of our model is simple. The flavour sector of the model is analyzed and compared with the one of the minimal Georgi-Glashow grand unified theory.

On the Phase Diagram of Massive Yang-Mills

The phases of a lattice gauge model for the massive Yang-Mills are investigated. The phase diagram supports the recent conjecture on the large energy behavior of nonlinearly realized massive gauge theories (i.e. mass a` la Stueckelberg, no Higgs mechanism), envisaging a Phase Transition (PT) to an asymptotically free massless Yang-Mills theory.

One-loop Self-energy and Counterterms in a Massive Yang-Mills Theory based on the Nonlinearly Realized Gauge Group

In this paper we evaluate the self-energy of the vector mesons at one loop in our recently proposed subtraction scheme for massive nonlinearly realized SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. We check the fulfillment of physical unitarity. The resulting self-mass can be compared with the value obtained in the massive Yang-Mills theory based on the Higgs mechanism, consisting in extra terms due to the presence of the Higgs boson (tadpoles included). Moreover we evaluate all the one-loop counterterms necessary for the next order calculations. By construction they satisfy all the equations of the model (Slavnov-Taylor, local functional equation and Landau gauge equation). They are sufficient to make all the one-loop amplitudes finite through the hierarchy encoded in the local functional equation.

Metamorphosis versus Decoupling in Nonabelian Gauge Theories at Very High Energies

In the present paper we study the limit of zero mass in nonabelian gauge theories both with Higgs mechanism and in the nonlinear realization of the gauge group (Stueckelberg mass). We argue that in the first case the longitudinal modes undergo a metamorphosis process to the Goldstone scalar modes, while in the second we guess a decoupling process associated to a phase transformation. The two scenarios yield strikingly different behaviors at high energy, mainly ascribed to the presence of a massless Higgs doublet among the physical modes in the case of Higgs mechanism (i.e. not only the Higgs boson). The aim of this work is to show that the problem of unitarity at high energy in nonabelian gauge theory with no Higgs boson can open new perspectives in quantum field theory.

The SU(2) X U(1) Electroweak Model based on the Nonlinearly Realized Gauge Group. II. Functional Equations and the Weak Power-Counting

In the present paper, that is the second part devoted to the construction of an electroweak model based on a nonlinear realization of the gauge group SU(2) X U(1), we study the tree-level vertex functional with all the sources necessary for the functional formulation of the relevant symmetries (Local Functional Equation, Slavnov-Taylor identity, Landau Gauge Equation) and for the symmetric removal of the divergences. The Weak Power Counting criterion is proven in the presence of the novel sources. The local invariant solutions of the functional equations are constructed in order to represent the counterterms for the one-loop subtractions. The bleaching technique is fully extended to the fermion sector. The neutral sector of the vector mesons is analyzed in detail in order to identify the physical fields for the photon and the Z boson. The identities necessary for the decoupling of the unphysical modes are fully analyzed. These latter results are crucially bound to the Landau gauge used throughout the paper.

One-loop Self-energies in the Electroweak Model with Nonlinearly Realized Gauge Group

We evaluate at one loop the self-energies in generic D dimensions for the W,Z mesons in the Electroweak model where the gauge group is nonlinearly realized. In this model the Higgs boson parameters are absent, while a second mass parameter appears together with a scale for the radiative corrections. We estimate these parameters in a simplified fit on leptons and gauge bosons data. We check physical unitarity and the absence of infrared divergences. Landau gauge is used.

The SU(2) X U(1) Electroweak Model based on the Nonlinearly Realized Gauge Group

The electroweak model is formulated on the nonlinearly realized gauge group SU(2) X U(1). This implies that in perturbation theory no Higgs field is present. The paper provides the effective action at the tree level, the Slavnov Taylor identity (necessary for the proof of unitarity), the local functional equation (used for the control of the amplitudes involving the Goldstone bosons) and the subtraction procedure (nonstandard, since the theory is not power-counting renormalizable). Particular attention is devoted to the number of independent parameters relevant for the vector mesons; in fact there is the possibility of introducing two mass parameters. With this choice the relation between the ratio of the intermediate vector meson masses and the Weinberg angle depends on an extra free parameter. We briefly outline a method for dealing with γ_5 in dimensional regularization. The model is formulated in the Landau gauge for sake of simplicity and conciseness: the QED Ward identity has a simple and intriguing form.

A Symmetric Approach to the Massive Nonlinear Sigma Model

In the present paper we extend to the massive case the procedure of divergences subtraction, previously introduced for the massless nonlinear sigma model (D=4). Perturbative expansion in the number of loops is successfully constructed. The resulting theory depends on the Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking parameter v, on the mass m and on the radiative correction parameter Λ. Fermions are not considered in the present work. SU(2) X SU(2) is the group used.

The Electroweak Model based on the Nonlinearly realized Gauge Group. Theoretical Foundations and Phenomenological Prospects

A consistent strategy for the subtraction of the divergences in the nonlinearly realized Electroweak Model in the loop expansion is presented. No Higgs field enters into the perturbative spectrum. The local functional equation (LFE), encoding the invariance of the SU(2) Haar measure under local left SU(2) transformations, the Slavnov-Taylor identity, required in order to fulfill physical unitarity, and the Landau gauge equation hold in the nonlinearly realized theory. The quantization is performed in the Landau gauge for the sake of simplicity and elegance. The constraints on the admissible interactions arising from the Weak Power-Counting (WPC) are discussed. The same symmetric pattern of the couplings as in the Standard Model is shown to arise, as a consequence of the defining functional identities and the WPC. However, two independent mass invariants in the vector meson sector are possible, i.e. no tree-level Weinberg relation holds between the Z and W mass. Majorana neutrino masses can be implemented in the nonlinearly realized Electroweak Model in a way compatible with the WPC and all the symmetries of the theory.

Endowing the Nonlinear Sigma Model with a Flat Connection Structure: a Way to Renormalization

We discuss the quantized theory of a pure-gauge non-abelian vector field (flat connection) as it would appear in a mass term a` la Stueckelberg. However the paper is limited to the case where only the flat connection is present (no field strength term). The perturbative solution is constructed by using only the functional equations and by expanding in the number of loops. In particular we do not use a perturbative approach based on the path integral or on a canonical quantization. It is shown that there is no solution with trivial S-matrix. Then the model is embedded in a nonlinear sigma model. The solution is constructed by exploiting a natural hierarchy in the functional equations given by the number of insertions of the flat connection and of the constrained component of the sigma field. The amplitudes with the sigma field are simply derived from those of the flat connection and of the constraint component. Unitarity is enforced by hand by using Feynman rules. We demonstrate the remarkable fact that in generic dimensions the naive Feynman rules yield amplitudes that satisfy the functional equations. This allows a dimensional renormalization of the theory in D=4 by recursive subtractions of the poles in the Laurent expansion. Thus one gets a finite theory depending only on two parameters. The novelty of the paper is the use of the functional equation associated to the local left multiplication introduced by Faddeev and Slavnov, here improved by adding the external source coupled to the constrained component. It gives a powerful tool to renormalize the nonlinear sigma model.

A Massive Yang-Mills Theory based on the Nonlinearly Realized Gauge Group

We propose a subtraction scheme for a massive Yang-Mills theory realized via a nonlinear representation of the gauge group (here SU(2)). It is based on the subtraction of the poles in D-4 of the amplitudes, in dimensional regularization, after a suitable normalization has been performed. Perturbation theory is in the number of loops and the procedure is stable under iterative subtraction of the poles. The unphysical Goldstone bosons, the Faddeev-Popov ghosts and the unphysical mode of the gauge field are expected to cancel out in the unitarity equation. The spontaneous symmetry breaking parameter is not a physical variable. We use the tools already tested in the nonlinear sigma model: hierarchy in the number of Goldstone boson legs and weak power-counting property (finite number of independent divergent amplitudes at each order). It is intriguing that the model is naturally based on the symmetry SU(2)_L local times SU(2)_R global. By construction the physical amplitudes depend on the mass and on the self-coupling constant of the gauge particle and moreover on the scale parameter of the radiative corrections. The Feynman rules are in the Landau gauge.
