The Standard Interpretable Model: A general theory of interpretable machine learning to deductively design interpretable methods using Lagrangian mechanics

As Artificial Intelligence models grow in complexity, interpretability has become an indispensable tool for understanding, debugging, and controlling their computations. However, interpretability lacks general theories to deductively design interpretable methods. This gap between theories and methods results in a fragmented literature and inconsistent evaluation protocols. To fill this gap, we introduce the Standard Interpretable Model (SIM), a general theory grounded in Lagrangian mechanics that enables the deductive design of interpretable methods. Specifically, the SIM summarises, in a set of premises, what interpretability is for a target user. From these premises, the SIM systematically derives interpretability symmetries and corresponding constraints, which shape the landscape of a Lagrangian whose minima correspond to optimal interpretable models. To reach the minima, one can either update the parameter values of an opaque model to make it more interpretable or compile constraints into an interpretable architecture. We empirically show that the SIM identifies and solves limitations of existing methods (including traditional, concept-based, and mechanistic interpretability), highlights underexplored research directions, and informs the design of core programming interfaces. Beyond being a research method, the deductive nature of the SIM offers pedagogical grounding for interpretability curricula and may shift the scientific community's perspective of a discipline that has long been fragmented.

Deforming ${\rm AdS}_3\times S^3\times T^4$ in Type IIB Supergravity

We discuss some new results on the construction of supersymmetric solutions of Type IIB supergravity of the form ${\rm WAdS}_3\times{\rm WS}^3\times T^4$, ${\rm WAdS}_3$ and ${\rm WS}^3$ denoting \emph{warped} anti-de Sitter spacetime and sphere, respectively. The distinctive feature of these backgrounds is that, in spite of them being supersymmetric, the warpings of the two factors are described by independent parameters. We illustrate how some of these geometries, characterised by a lightlike warping of the anti-de Sitter factor, arise in the near-horizon limit of a regular, asymptotically locally flat configuration of D-branes and fluxes. Central to the construction of the latter solutions is the use of two independent TsT transformations. We also give a new class of supersymmetric solutions of the general form ${\rm WAdS}_3\times{\rm WS}^3\times T^4$, which has not been published yet. They feature warpings of the anti-de Sitter factor of the lightlike, spacelike and timelike types. We discuss their properties.

On U-Folds and Their Construction

We review a general paradigm for constructing U-fold backgrounds in (dimensionally reduced) Type IIB superstring theory, of the form ${\rm AdS}_{d-1}\times S^1\times S^d$, with a monodromy along $S^1$ in the string-duality group. We also consider a special instance with $d=3$ in Type IIB superstring theory, discuss its ten-dimensional uplift and assess its supersymmetry.

Critical reassessment of the restricted Weyl symmetry

A class of globally scale-invariant scalar-tensor theories have been proposed to be invariant under a larger class of transformations that take the form of local Weyl transformations supplemented by a restriction that the conformal factor satisfies a covariant Klein-Gordon equation. The action of these theories indeed seems to be invariant under such transformations up to boundary terms, this property being referred to as ``restricted Weyl symmetry''. However, we find that corresponding equations of motion are not invariant under these transformations. This is a paradox, that is explained by realizing that the restriction condition on the conformal factor forces the restricted Weyl transformation to be a nonlocal transformation. For nonlocal transformations would-be boundary terms cannot in general be discarded from the action. Moreover, variations of trajectories cannot be assumed to vanish at boundaries of the action when deriving equations of motion. We illustrate both of these less known properties by considering a series of simple examples. Finally, we apply these observations to the case of globally scale-invariant scalar-tensor theories to demonstrate that restricted Weyl transformations are, in fact, not symmetries of the full system.

BPS states in AdS$_3$ Supergravity with Chiral Torsion

In this letter, we construct a supersymmetric model, obtained by deforming $\mathcal N=2$ AdS$_3$ supergravity through a chiral vector component of the torsion. Moreover, we study the existence of BPS states of such theory, by inspecting the presence of Killing spinors on a specific bosonic solution.

New Torsional Deformations of Locally AdS$_3$ Space

We consider general torsion components in three-dimensional Einstein-Cartan gravity, providing a geometrical interpretation for matter, and find new solutions of the corresponding equations for the Riemann curvature and torsion. These geometries involve a peculiar interplay between the vector $(\beta_i)$ and the singlet $(\tau)$ irreducible components of the torsion which, under general conditions, feature a formal analogy with the equation for a Beltrami fluid. Interestingly, we find that the local AdS$_3$ geometry is now deformed by effect of the "Beltrami-torsion" $\beta_i$. Some of these new solutions describe deformations of the BTZ black hole due to the presence of torsion. The latter acts as a geometric flux which, in some cases, removes the causal singularity.

Gauged D=4 N=4 Supergravity

We present the full Lagrangian and supersymmetry transformation rules for the gauged D=4, N=4 (half-maximal) supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of vector multiplets. Using the embedding tensor formulation, the final results are universal and valid in arbitrary symplectic frames. We also analyze the conditions for the critical points of the scalar potential and specify the full spectrum of the quadratic fluctuations about Minkowski vacua. This allows us also to exclude the appearance of quadratic divergences in the 1-loop corrections to the scalar potential for any Minkowski vacuum fully breaking supersymmetry. We also provide some interesting byproducts of our analysis, like the field equations and the quadratic constraints for the fermion shifts characterizing the gauging (also known as T-tensor identities).

Taming boundary condition changing operator anomalies with the tachyon vacuum

Motivated by the appearance of associativity anomalies in the context of superstring field theory, we give a generalized solution built from boundary condition changing operators which can be associated to a generic tachyon vacuum in the $KBc$ subalgebra of the Okawa form. We articulate sufficient conditions on the choice of tachyon vacuum to ensure that ambiguous products do not appear in the equations of motion.
