AI-Assisted ISAC Localization-as-a-Service for 6G UAV-IoT Networks

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) can enable sixth-generation (6G) unmanned aerial vehicle-assisted Internet of Things (UAV-IoT) networks to provide reliable Localization-as-a-Service (LaaS), but activating all aerial/terrestrial anchors and beams increases pilot overhead, energy use, and beam-training delay. This article proposes artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted ISAC resource selection for LaaS (AIRS-LaaS), an edge-intelligent framework that ranks candidate anchor--beam pairs using line-of-sight (LoS) likelihood, signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), sensing confidence, geometry, mobility risk, and resource cost. A lightweight selector then activates only a compact subset before localization. Simulations compare AIRS-LaaS with all-anchor, Fisher information matrix/Cramér--Rao lower bound (FIM/CRLB)-greedy, strongest-SINR, nearest-anchor, and random schemes under LoS/non-line-of-sight (NLoS) conditions and UAV mobility. Results show a balanced localization--communication--overhead tradeoff, while the discussion highlights standard-driven key performance indicators (KPIs), ISAC reporting, localization confidence, fallback operation, AI model management, and privacy-aware data exchange.

Common-Transmitter Multipath-Aware TDoA Localization for Acoustic Backscatter-Enabled IoUT Networks

Acoustic backscatter enables low-power Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) nodes, but localizing passive/semi-passive tags is difficult under weak returns and surface/seabed multipath. This letter proposes a clock-free common-transmitter time-difference-of-arrival (TDoA) framework, in which one anchor interrogates the tag and synchronized receivers measure the backscattered arrivals. Receiver-side differencing cancels the unknown interrogation time, forward anchor-to-tag delay, and tag switching delay. A weighted nonlinear least-squares estimator combines signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), timing variance, and root-mean-square (RMS) delay spread. Simulations against received signal strength indicator (RSSI)-only, unweighted, SNR-weighted, and robust TDoA baselines show that at $20$ dB SNR, the root-mean-square error (RMSE) decreases from $4.71$ m to $4.13$ m, and the $5$ m success probability improves from $0.793$ to $0.835$.

Resource-Aware Topology Management for ISAC-Enabled TDOA Localization in IoUT Networks

Reliable localization in the Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) is hindered by limited acoustic bandwidth, long propagation delays, multipath, Doppler shifts, and energy-constrained nodes. This letter proposes an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC)-enabled topology management and multi-stage adaptive estimation (ISAC-TM-MAE) framework for time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) localization in IoUT networks. In the proposed framework, heterogeneous underwater sensors, seabed anchors, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and surface buoys exploit acoustic ISAC packets for joint communication and localization. The IoUT network is modeled as a graph, in which informative node pairs are selected subject to acoustic bandwidth, computation, energy, and link-reliability constraints. A D-optimal criterion maximizes the Fisher information matrix (FIM) over the underwater region of interest, while the MAE stage refines the source estimate under acoustic noise and channel uncertainty. Numerical results show that the proposed ISAC-TM-MAE improves localization accuracy, resource efficiency, scalability, and robustness compared with centralized, distributed, and benchmark TDOA localization schemes.

AI-Empowered UAV-Assisted Backscatter Localization and ISAC for Zero-Energy IoT: A Comprehensive Survey

Zero-energy Internet of Things (IoT) enables passive or near-passive devices to operate on harvested energy rather than batteries. Backscatter communication (BackCom) supports this vision by enabling tags to transmit data via reflection and modulation of incident RF signals, but it suffers from weak reflections, double-path loss, limited coverage, direct-link interference, and dependence on external RF sources. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can mitigate these limitations by acting as mobile carrier emitters, data collectors, relays, aerial receivers, mobile anchors, sensing platforms, and edge-intelligence nodes. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) further enables the sharing of wireless resources for data transmission, localization, target sensing, and environmental awareness. This article surveys RF-based AI-empowered UAV-assisted backscatter localization and ISAC for zero-energy IoT. It reviews enabling technologies, presents a structured PRISMA-informed methodology, and develops a unified taxonomy covering network architectures, UAV roles, backscatter modes, RF sources, localization and sensing functions, AI techniques, and performance metrics. It also discusses UAV-assisted BackCom, passive localization, ISAC-enabled UAV-backscatter systems, and AI-driven optimization through comparative tables, quantitative trend analysis, coverage evaluation, and tutorial-style numerical illustrations. Finally, it identifies open challenges and future directions in realistic channel modeling, energy-neutral operation, benchmarking, reproducibility, scalable and trustworthy AI, security, privacy, hardware validation, and integration with RIS, MEC, digital twins, and 6G technologies.

However, IoUT communication is constrained by limited bandwidth, long propagation delay, time-varying underwater channels, intermittent connectivity, and strict energy budgets. Semantic Communication (SC) offers a promising alternative by transmitting task-relevant meaning rather than raw data, thereby improving communication efficiency in resource-constrained underwater networks. This paper presents a critical and feasibility-aware survey of SC for IoUT, focusing on opportunities, challenges, limitations, and future research directions. We first review the fundamentals of SC-enabled IoUT systems, including semantic representations, layered architectures, semantic channel modeling, and task-oriented evaluation metrics. We then examine learning-driven approaches based on machine learning (ML), knowledge graphs (KGs), vision-language models (VLMs), generative models, and federated learning (FL), with emphasis on their feasibility under underwater edge constraints. Representative applications, including environmental monitoring, marine ecology, subsea infrastructure inspection, disaster response, and autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) coordination, are analyzed from an SC perspective. Finally, we identify key research directions involving standardized semantic models, reproducible testbeds, compute--communication trade-offs, trustworthy reconstruction, hybrid underwater links, energy-aware edge intelligence, semantic security, digital twins (DTs), and cross-domain interoperability. This survey provides a structured foundation for developing reliable, efficient, and meaning-driven IoUT communication systems.

Bayesian Multidimensional Scaling for Location Awareness in Hybrid-Internet of Underwater Things

Localization of sensor nodes in the Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) is of considerable significance due to its various applications, such as navigation, data tagging, and detection of underwater objects. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a hybrid Bayesian multidimensional scaling (BMDS) based localization technique that can work on a fully hybrid IoUT network where the nodes can communicate using either optical, magnetic induction, and acoustic technologies. These technologies are already used for communication in the underwater environment; however, lacking localization solutions. Optical and magnetic induction communication achieves higher data rates for short communication. On the contrary, acoustic waves provide a low data rate for long-range underwater communication. The proposed method collectively uses optical, magnetic induction, and acoustic communication-based ranging to estimate the underwater sensor nodes' final locations. Moreover, we also analyze the proposed scheme by deriving the hybrid Cramer Rao lower bound (HCRLB). Simulation results provide a complete comparative analysis of the proposed method with the literature.
