Stability analysis of stochastic second-order macroscopic continuum models and numerical simulations

Second-order macroscopic continuum models have been constantly improving for decades to reproduce the empirical observations. Recently, a series of experimental studies have suggested that the stochastic factors contribute significantly to destabilizing traffic flow. Nevertheless, the traffic flow stability of the stochastic second-order macroscopic continuum model hasn't received the attention it deserves in past studies. More importantly, we have found that the destabilizing aspect of stochasticity is still not correctly validated in the existing theoretical stability analysis. In this paper, we analytically study the impact of stochasticity on traffic flow stability for a general stochastic second-order macroscopic model by using the direct Lyapunov method. Numerical simulations have been carried out for different typical stochastic second-order macroscopic models. Our analytical stability analysis has been validated, and our methodology has been proved more efficient. Our study has theoretically revealed that the presence of stochasticity has a destabilizing effect in stochastic macroscopic models.

Oscillation growth in mixed traffic flow of human driven vehicles and automated vehicles: Experimental study and simulation

This paper reports an experimental study on oscillation growth in mixed traffic flow of automated vehicles (AVs) and human driven vehicles (HVs). The leading vehicle moves with constant speed in the experiment. The following vehicles consist of six developable AVs and different number of HVs. Thus, the market penetration rate (MPR) of AVs decreases with the increase of platoon size. The AVs are homogeneously distributed in the platoon. The constant time gap car-following policy is adopted for the AVs and the gap is set to 1.5 s. The experiment shows that in the 7-vehicle-platoon, the oscillations grow only slightly. In the 10-vehicle-platoon, the AVs could still significantly suppress the growth of oscillations. With the further decrease of MPR of AVs in the 13- and 20-vehicle-platoon, the AVs become having no significant impact on oscillation growth. On the other hand, with the decrease of MPR of AVs, average density of the vehicles and flow rate of the platoon increase, which demonstrates a trade-off between traffic stability and throughput under the given setup of AVs. The simulation study is also carried out, which exhibits good agreement with the experiment. Finally, sensitivity analysis of the parameters in the AV upper-level control algorithm has been performed, which is expected to guide future experiment design.

On the Effectiveness of Pinyin-Character Dual-Decoding for End-to-End Mandarin Chinese ASR

End-to-end automatic speech recognition (ASR) has achieved promising results. However, most existing end-to-end ASR methods neglect the use of specific language characteristics. For Mandarin Chinese ASR tasks, there exist mutual promotion relationship between Pinyin and Character where Chinese characters can be romanized by Pinyin. Based on the above intuition, we first investigate types of end-to-end encoder-decoder based models in the single-input dual-output (SIDO) multi-task framework, after which a novel asynchronous decoding with fuzzy Pinyin sampling method is proposed according to the one-to-one correspondence characteristics between Pinyin and Character. Furthermore, we proposed a two-stage training strategy to make training more stable and converge faster. The results on the test sets of AISHELL-1 dataset show that the proposed enhanced dual-decoder model without a language model is improved by a big margin compared to strong baseline models.

Hybrid Car-Following Strategy based on Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient and Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control

Deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG)-based car-following strategy can break through the constraints of the differential equation model due to the ability of exploration on complex environments. However, the car-following performance of DDPG is usually degraded by unreasonable reward function design, insufficient training, and low sampling efficiency. In order to solve this kind of problem, a hybrid car-following strategy based on DDPG and cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) is proposed. First, the car-following process is modeled as the Markov decision process to calculate CACC and DDPG simultaneously at each frame. Given a current state, two actions are obtained from CACC and DDPG, respectively. Then, an optimal action, corresponding to the one offering a larger reward, is chosen as the output of the hybrid strategy. Meanwhile, a rule is designed to ensure that the change rate of acceleration is smaller than the desired value. Therefore, the proposed strategy not only guarantees the basic performance of car-following through CACC but also makes full use of the advantages of exploration on complex environments via DDPG. Finally, simulation results show that the car-following performance of the proposed strategy is improved compared with that of DDPG and CACC.

Superradiant instability of the Kerr-like black hole in Einstein-bumblebee gravity

An exact Kerr-like solution has been obtained recently in Einstein-bumblebee gravity model where Lorentz symmetry is spontaneously broken. In this paper, we investigate the superradiant instability of the Kerr-like black hole under the perturbation of a massive scalar field. We find the Lorentz breaking parameter $L$ does not affect the superradiance regime or the regime of the bound states. However, since $L$ appears in the metric and its effect cannot be erased by redefining the rotation parameter $\tilde{a}=\sqrt{1+L}a$, it indeed affects the bound state spectrum and the superradiance. We calculate the bound state spectrum via the continued-fraction method and show the influence of $L$ on the maximum binding energy and the damping rate. The superradiant instability could occur since the superradiance condition and the bound state condition could be both satisfied. Compared with Kerr black hole, the nature of the superradiant instability of this black hole depends non-monotonously not only on the rotation parameter of the black hole $\tilde{a}$ and the product of the black hole mass $M$ and the field mass $μ$, but also on the Lorentz breaking parameter $L$. Through the Monte Carlo method, we find that for $l=m=1$ state the most unstable mode occurs at $L=-0.79637$, $\tilde{a}/M=0.99884$ and $Mμ=0.43920$, with the maximum growth rate of the field $ω_{I}M=1.676\times10^{-6}$, which is about 10 times of that in Kerr black hole.

Identifying intracity freight trip ends from heavy truck GPS trajectories

Intracity heavy truck freight trips are basic data in city freight system planning and management. In the big data era, massive heavy truck GPS trajectories can be acquired cost effectively in real-time. Identifying freight trip ends (origins and destinations) from heavy truck GPS trajectories is an outstanding problem. Although previous studies proposed a variety of trip end identification methods from different perspectives, these studies subjectively defined key threshold parameters and ignored the complex intracity heavy truck travel characteristics. Here, we propose a data-driven trip end identification method in which the speed threshold for identifying truck stops and the multilevel time thresholds for distinguishing temporary stops and freight trip ends are objectively defined. Moreover, an appropriate time threshold level is dynamically selected by considering the intracity activity patterns of heavy trucks. Furthermore, we use urban road networks and point-of-interest (POI) data to eliminate misidentified trip ends to improve method accuracy. The validation results show that the accuracy of the method we propose is 87.45%. Our method incorporates the impact of the city freight context on truck trajectory characteristics, and its results can reflect the spatial distribution and chain patterns of intracity heavy truck freight trips, which have a wide range of practical applications.

A Natural Language Processing Pipeline of Chinese Free-text Radiology Reports for Liver Cancer Diagnosis

Despite the rapid development of natural language processing (NLP) implementation in electronic medical records (EMRs), Chinese EMRs processing remains challenging due to the limited corpus and specific grammatical characteristics, especially for radiology reports. In this study, we designed an NLP pipeline for the direct extraction of clinically relevant features from Chinese radiology reports, which is the first key step in computer-aided radiologic diagnosis. The pipeline was comprised of named entity recognition, synonyms normalization, and relationship extraction to finally derive the radiological features composed of one or more terms. In named entity recognition, we incorporated lexicon into deep learning model bidirectional long short-term memory-conditional random field (BiLSTM-CRF), and the model finally achieved an F1 score of 93.00%. With the extracted radiological features, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator and machine learning methods (support vector machine, random forest, decision tree, and logistic regression) were used to build the classifiers for liver cancer prediction. For liver cancer diagnosis, random forest had the highest predictive performance in liver cancer diagnosis (F1 score 86.97%, precision 87.71%, and recall 86.25%). This work was a comprehensive NLP study focusing on Chinese radiology reports and the application of NLP in cancer risk prediction. The proposed NLP pipeline for the radiological feature extraction could be easily implemented in other kinds of Chinese clinical texts and other disease predictive tasks.

Roundtrip: A Deep Generative Neural Density Estimator

Density estimation is a fundamental problem in both statistics and machine learning. In this study, we proposed Roundtrip as a general-purpose neural density estimator based on deep generative models. Roundtrip retains the generative power of generative adversarial networks (GANs) but also provides estimates of density values. Unlike previous neural density estimators that put stringent conditions on the transformation from the latent space to the data space, Roundtrip enables the use of much more general mappings. In a series of experiments, Roundtrip achieves state-of-the-art performance in a diverse range of density estimation tasks.

Few shot domain adaptation for in situ macromolecule structural classification in cryo-electron tomograms

Motivation: Cryo-Electron Tomography (cryo-ET) visualizes structure and spatial organization of macromolecules and their interactions with other subcellular components inside single cells in the close-to-native state at sub-molecular resolution. Such information is critical for the accurate understanding of cellular processes. However, subtomogram classification remains one of the major challenges for the systematic recognition and recovery of the macromolecule structures in cryo-ET because of imaging limits and data quantity. Recently, deep learning has significantly improved the throughput and accuracy of large-scale subtomogram classification. However often it is difficult to get enough high-quality annotated subtomogram data for supervised training due to the enormous expense of labeling. To tackle this problem, it is beneficial to utilize another already annotated dataset to assist the training process. However, due to the discrepancy of image intensity distribution between source domain and target domain, the model trained on subtomograms in source domainmay perform poorly in predicting subtomogram classes in the target domain. Results: In this paper, we adapt a few shot domain adaptation method for deep learning based cross-domain subtomogram classification. The essential idea of our method consists of two parts: 1) take full advantage of the distribution of plentiful unlabeled target domain data, and 2) exploit the correlation between the whole source domain dataset and few labeled target domain data. Experiments conducted on simulated and real datasets show that our method achieves significant improvement on cross domain subtomogram classification compared with baseline methods.

Probing the conformal invariance around the nonsingular static spherical black holes with waves

Conformal invariance can ameliorate or eliminate the singularities residing in the black holes, and may still exist in the strong gravity regimes close to these black holes. In this paper, we try to probe this conformal invariance by looking into the wave absorption and scattering by the nonsingular static spherical black holes. The partial and total absorption cross section, as well as the differential scattering cross section, are presented for black holes with different choices of conformal parameters. Although the photon trajectories are unchanged from the Schwarzschild case since the spacetimes are conformally related, the wave optics are affected by the conformal parameters. As a result, the absorption of waves generally increases with the conformal parameters, while the shadow of the black holes remains the same as the Schwarzschild case. Moreover, the peaks in the oscillatory pattern of scattering shift towards smaller observing angles as the conformal parameters grows, while the widths of the glory peaks do not show sensitive dependence. The unique signature of the wave absorption and scattering by the nonsingular static spherical black holes in conformal gravity thus can serve to distinguish themselves from the Schwarzschild in the low frequency regime, and from other spherical black holes of alternative gravities in the high frequency limit and glory peaks.

A comparison study on the growth pattern of traffic oscillations in car-following experiments

The evolution of oscillations is a very important issue in traffic flow studies. A recent car-following experiment (Experiment-I) showed that the speed standard deviation grows in a concave way along a platoon of vehicles following one another. This finding indicates that the traditional traffic instability mechanism is debatable, in which the speed standard deviation initially grows in a convex way. This paper has investigated the growth pattern of traffic oscillations in another car-following experiment (Experiment-II) and compared it with that in Experiment-I. It is shown that the speed standard deviation also exhibits concave growth characteristics in Experiment-II. The paired-sample t-test and the Mann-Kendall (MK) trend test showed that there is no significant difference between the two datasets. However, the acceleration standard deviation was remarkably larger in Experiment-II since drivers were asked to follow closely. Furthermore, a comparison experiment has been performed which indicates that the set of experiments on a circular track can be considered equivalent to that on a straight track. Our study is expected to shed light not only on traffic flow dynamics itself but also on the future design of the experiment scheme.

Study on departure time choice behavior in commute problem with stochastic bottleneck capacity: Experiments and modeling

Uncertainty is inevitable in transportation system due to the stochastic change of demand and supply. It is one of the most important factors affecting travelers' choice behavior. Based on the framework of Vickrey's bottleneck model, we designed and conducted laboratory experiment to investigate the effects of stochastic bottleneck capacity on commuter departure time choice behavior. Two different scenarios with different information feedback are investigated. The experimental results show that the relationship between the mean cost (E(C)) and the standard deviation of cost (σ) can all be fitted approximately linearly with a positive slope σ=E(C)/λ^*-m (λ^*>0). This suggests that under the uncertain environment, travelers are likely to minimize their travel cost budget, defined as E(C)-λ^* σ, and λ^*>0 indicates that the travelers behave risk preferring. The experiments also found that providing the cost information of all departure times to the commuters lowered the commuters' risk preference coefficient (i.e., λ^* decreases). We propose a reinforcement learning model, which is shown to reproduce the main experimental findings well.

Go left or right? Explore the side preference behavior with circle antipode experiments

Side preference is a critical behavior in conflict handling, and here the behavior is investigated with pedestrian trajectories in circle antipode experiments that own both conflicting and symmetrical participant situations. In the series of experiments, more participants(around 70\%) prefer to walk on the right side, and the statistical analyses reveal that factors such as handedness, gender, and height have no significant impacts. Further investigations show that most pedestrians actually make the side choices at the very beginning, and empirical results suggest that selecting the dominate side preference (right side in our experiments) can benefit the individual movement efficiency. To reflect the realistic side preference characteristics in simulations, a Voronoi diagram based model is introduced as well as a side preference parameter with normal distribution is formulated and calibrated. Further simulations prove that the modified model is able to reproduce realistic side preference behaviors in circle antipode experiments and other common situations.

Car following behavioral stochasticity analysis and modelling: Perspective from wave travel time

This paper analyzes the car following behavioral stochasticity based on two sets of field experimental trajectory data by measuring the wave travel time series of vehicle n. The analysis shows that (i) No matter the speed of leading vehicle oscillates significantly or slightly, wave travel time might change significantly; (ii) A follower's wave travel time can vary from run to run even the leader travels at the same stable speed; (iii) Sometimes, even if the leader speed fluctuates significantly, the follower can keep a nearly constant value of wave travel time. The Augmented Dickey-Fuller test indicates that the time series the changing rate of wave travel time follows a mean reversion process, no matter the oscillations fully developed or not. Based on the finding, a simple stochastic Newell model is proposed. The concave growth pattern of traffic oscillations has been derived analytically. Furthermore, simulation results demonstrate that the new model well captures both macroscopic characteristic of traffic flow evolution and microscopic characteristic of car following.

Bicycle flow dynamics on wide roads: Experiment and modeling

Cycling is a green transportation mode, and is promoted by many governments to mitigate traffic congestion. However, studies concerning the traffic dynamics of bicycle flow are very limited. This study experimentally investigated bicycle flow dynamics on a wide road, modeled using a 3-m-wide track. The results showed that the bicycle flow rate remained nearly constant across a wide range of densities, in marked contrast to single-file bicycle flow, which exhibits a unimodal fundamental diagram. By studying the weight density of the radial locations of cyclists, we argue that this behavior arises from the formation of more lanes with the increase of global density. The extra lanes prevent the longitudinal density from increasing as quickly as in single-file bicycle flow. When the density is larger than 0.5 bicycles/m2, the flow rate begins to decrease, and stop-and-go traffic emerges. A cognitive-science-based model to reproduce bicycle dynamics is proposed, in which cyclists apply simple cognitive procedures to adapt their target directions and desired riding speeds. To incorporate differences in acceleration, deceleration, and turning, different relaxation times are used. The model can reproduce the experimental results acceptably well and may also provide guidance on infrastructure design.

On the role of speed adaptation and spacing indifference in traffic instability: evidence from car-following experiments and its stochastic modeling

Understanding the mechanisms responsible for the emergence and evolution of oscillations in traffic flow has been subject to intensive research by the traffic flow theory community. In our previous work, we proposed a new mechanism to explain the generation of traffic oscillations: traffic instability caused by the competition between speed adaptation and the cumulative effect of stochastic factors. In this paper, by conducting a closer examination of car following data obtained in a 25-car platoon experiment, we discovered that the speed difference plays a more important role on car-following dynamics than the spacing, and when its amplitude is small, the growth of oscillations is mainly determined by the stochastic factors that follow the mean reversion process; when its amplitude increases, the growth of the oscillations is determined by the competition between the stochastic factors and the speed difference. An explanation is then provided, based on the above findings, to why the speed variance in the oscillatory traffic grows in a concave way along the platoon. Finally, we proposed a mode-switching stochastic car-following model that incorporates the speed adaptation and spacing indifference behaviors of drivers, which captures the observed characteristics of oscillation and discharge rate. Sensitivity analysis shows that reaction delay only has slight effect but indifference region boundary has significant on oscillation growth rate and discharge rate.

Speed dependent stochasticity capacitates Newell model for synchronized flow and oscillation growth pattern

This paper has incorporated the stochasticity into the Newell car following model. Three stochastic driving factors have been considered: (i) Driver's acceleration is bounded. (ii) Driver's deceleration includes stochastic component, which is depicted by a deceleration with the randomization probability that is assumed to increase with the speed. (iii) Vehicles in the jam state have a larger randomization probability. Two simulation scenarios are conducted to test the model. In the first scenario, traffic flow on a circular road is investigated. In the second scenario, empirical traffic flow patterns in the NGSIM data induced by a rubberneck bottleneck is studied, and the simulated traffic oscillations and synchronized traffic flow are consistent with the empirical patterns. Moreover, two experiments of model calibration and validation are conducted. The first is to calibrate and validate using experimental data, which illustrates that the concave growth pattern has been quantitatively simulated. The second is to calibrate and cross validate vehicles' trajectories using NGSIM data, which exhibits that the car following behaviors of single vehicles can be well described. Therefore, our study highlights the importance of speed dependent stochasticity in traffic flow modeling, which cannot be ignored as in most car-following studies.

Theoretical investigation, simulation and empirical analysis of the growth pattern of traffic oscillations in the Euler coordinates

The formation and development of oscillations is an important traffic flow phenomenon. Recent studies found that along a vehicle platoon described in the Lagrangian specification, traffic oscillations grow in a concave way. Since stationary bottlenecks are more intuitively described in the Eulerian framework, this paper investigates whether the concave growth pattern of traffic oscillations in the Lagrangian coordinates can be transferred to the Euler coordinates (i.e. the concave increase in standard deviation is no longer measured across the vehicle indices but as a function of the road location). To this end, we theoretically unify these two ways of measuring oscillations by revealing their mapping relationship. We show that the growth pattern measured in the Lagrangian coordinates can be transferred to the Euler coordinates. We believe this finding is nontrivial since the scenarios are significantly different: while in vehicle platoons (Lagrangian view, non-penetrable moving bottleneck), the speed variance for a given vehicle is ideally constant, the drivers in the Eulerian setting (penetrable stationary bottleneck triggering the waves) experience all amplitudes, first the big ones and then the small ones. To test this proposition, we performed simulation using two different kinds of car-following models. Simulation results validate the theoretical analysis. Finally, we performed empirical analysis using the NGSIM data, which also validates the theoretical analysis.
