Nanoscale electrometry based on a magnetic-field-resistant spin sensor

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center is a potential atomic-scale spin sensor for electric field sensing. However, its natural susceptibility to the magnetic field hinders effective detection of the electric field. Here we propose a robust electrometric method utilizing continuous dynamic decoupling (CDD) technique. During the CDD period, the NV center evolves in a dressed-state space, where the sensor is resistant to magnetic fields but remains sensitive to electric fields. As an example, we use this method to isolate the electric noise from a complex electro-magnetical environment near diamond surface via measuring the dephasing rate between dressed states. By reducing the surface electric noise with different covered liquids, we observe an unambiguous relation between the dephasing rate and the dielectric permittivity of the liquid, which enables a quantitative investigation of electric noise model near diamond surface.

Age of Processing: Age-driven Status Sampling and Processing Offloading for Edge Computing-enabled Real-time IoT Applications

The freshness of status information is of great importance for time-critical Internet of Things (IoT) applications. A metric measuring status freshness is the age-of-information (AoI), which captures the time elapsed from the status being generated at the source node (e.g., a sensor) to the latest status update. However, in intelligent IoT applications such as video surveillance, the status information is revealed after some computation intensive and time-consuming data processing operations, which would affect the status freshness. In this paper, we propose a novel metric, age-of-processing (AoP), to quantify such status freshness, which captures the time elapsed of the newest received processed status data since it is generated. Compared with AoI, AoP further takes the data processing time into account. Since an IoT device has limited computation and energy resource, the device can choose to offload the data processing to the nearby edge server under constrained status sampling frequency. We aim to minimize the average AoP in a long-term process by jointly optimizing the status sampling frequency and processing offloading policy. We formulate this online problem as an infinite-horizon constrained Markov decision process (CMDP) with average reward criterion. We then transform the CMDP problem into an unconstrained Markov decision process (MDP) by leveraging a Lagrangian method, and propose a Lagrangian transformation framework for the original CMDP problem. Furthermore, we integrate the framework with perturbation based refinement for achieving the optimal policy of the CMDP problem. Extensive numerical evaluations show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the benchmarks, with an average AoP reduction up to 30%.

G-Net: A Deep Learning Approach to G-computation for Counterfactual Outcome Prediction Under Dynamic Treatment Regimes

Counterfactual prediction is a fundamental task in decision-making. G-computation is a method for estimating expected counterfactual outcomes under dynamic time-varying treatment strategies. Existing G-computation implementations have mostly employed classical regression models with limited capacity to capture complex temporal and nonlinear dependence structures. This paper introduces G-Net, a novel sequential deep learning framework for G-computation that can handle complex time series data while imposing minimal modeling assumptions and provide estimates of individual or population-level time varying treatment effects. We evaluate alternative G-Net implementations using realistically complex temporal simulated data obtained from CVSim, a mechanistic model of the cardiovascular system.

Periodically-driven facilitated high-efficiency dissipative entanglement with Rydberg atoms

A time-dependent periodical field can be utilized to efficiently modify the Rabi coupling of system, exhibiting nontrivial dynamics. We propose a scheme to show that this feature can be applied for speeding up the formation of dissipative steady entanglement based on Rydberg anti-blockade mechanism in a simplified configuration, fundamentally stemming from a frequency match between the external-field modulation frequency and the systematic characteristic frequency. In the presence of an optimal modulation frequency that is exactly equal to the central frequency of driving field, it enables a sufficient residence time of the two-excitation Rydberg state for an irreversible spontaneous decay onto the target state, leading to an accelerated high-fidelity steady entanglement ~0.98, with a shorter formation time <400μs. We show that, a global maximal fidelity benefits from a consistence of microwave-field coupling and spontaneous decay strengths, by which the scheme promises a robust insensitivity to the initial population distributions. This simple approach to facilitate the generation of dissipative entangled two-qubit states by using periodic drivings may guide a new experimental direction in Rydberg quantum technology and quantum information.

MODMA dataset: a Multi-modal Open Dataset for Mental-disorder Analysis

According to the World Health Organization, the number of mental disorder patients, especially depression patients, has grown rapidly and become a leading contributor to the global burden of disease. However, the present common practice of depression diagnosis is based on interviews and clinical scales carried out by doctors, which is not only labor-consuming but also time-consuming. One important reason is due to the lack of physiological indicators for mental disorders. With the rising of tools such as data mining and artificial intelligence, using physiological data to explore new possible physiological indicators of mental disorder and creating new applications for mental disorder diagnosis has become a new research hot topic. However, good quality physiological data for mental disorder patients are hard to acquire. We present a multi-modal open dataset for mental-disorder analysis. The dataset includes EEG and audio data from clinically depressed patients and matching normal controls. All our patients were carefully diagnosed and selected by professional psychiatrists in hospitals. The EEG dataset includes not only data collected using traditional 128-electrodes mounted elastic cap, but also a novel wearable 3-electrode EEG collector for pervasive applications. The 128-electrodes EEG signals of 53 subjects were recorded as both in resting state and under stimulation; the 3-electrode EEG signals of 55 subjects were recorded in resting state; the audio data of 52 subjects were recorded during interviewing, reading, and picture description. We encourage other researchers in the field to use it for testing their methods of mental-disorder analysis.

Robust Data Preprocessing for Machine-Learning-Based Disk Failure Prediction in Cloud Production Environments

To provide proactive fault tolerance for modern cloud data centers, extensive studies have proposed machine learning (ML) approaches to predict imminent disk failures for early remedy and evaluated their approaches directly on public datasets (e.g., Backblaze SMART logs). However, in real-world production environments, the data quality is imperfect (e.g., inaccurate labeling, missing data samples, and complex failure types), thereby degrading the prediction accuracy. We present RODMAN, a robust data preprocessing pipeline that refines data samples before feeding them into ML models. We start with a large-scale trace-driven study of over three million disks from Alibaba Cloud's data centers, and motivate the practical challenges in ML-based disk failure prediction. We then design RODMAN with three data preprocessing echniques, namely failure-type filtering, spline-based data filling, and automated pre-failure backtracking, that are applicable for general ML models. Evaluation on both the Alibaba and Backblaze datasets shows that RODMAN improves the prediction accuracy compared to without data preprocessing under various settings.

Strange metal behavior in a pure ferromagnetic Kondo lattice

The strange metal phases found to develop in a wide range of materials near a quantum critical point (QCP), have posed a long-standing mystery. The frequent association of strange metals with unconventional superconductivity and antiferromagnetic QCPs has led to a belief that they are highly entangled quantum states. Ferromagnets, by contrast are regarded as an unlikely setting for strange metals, for they are weakly entangled and their QCPs are often interrupted by competing phases or first order phase transitions. Here, we provide compelling evidence that the stoichiometric heavy fermion ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ becomes a strange metal at a pressure-induced QCP: specific heat and resistivity measurements demonstrate that the FM transition is continuously suppressed to zero temperature revealing a strange metal phase. We argue that strong magnetic anisotropy plays a key role in this process, injecting entanglement, in the form of triplet resonating valence bonds (tRVBs) into the ordered ferromagnet. We show that the singular transformation from tRVBs into Kondo singlets that occurs at the QCP causes a jump in the Fermi surface volume: a key driver of strange metallic behavior. Our results open up a new direction for research into FM quantum criticality, while also establishing an important new setting for the strange metal problem. Most importantly, strange metallic behavior at a FM quantum critical point suggests that it is quantum entanglement rather than the destruction of antiferromagnetism that is the common driver of the many varied examples of strange metallic behavior.

Room temperature test of the Continuous Spontaneous Localization model using a levitated micro-oscillator

The Continuous Spontaneous Localization (CSL) model predicts a tiny break of energy conservation via a weak stochastic force acting on physical systems, which triggers the collapse of the wave function. Mechanical oscillators are a natural way to test such a force; in particular levitated micro-mechanical oscillator has been recently proposed to be an ideal system. We report a proof-of-principle experiment with a micro-oscillator generated by a micro-sphere diamagnetically levitated in a magneto-gravitational trap under high vacuum. Due to the ultra-low mechanical dissipation, the oscillator provides a new upper bound on the CSL collapse rate, which gives an improvement of two orders of magnitude over the previous bounds in the same frequency range, and partially reaches the enhanced collapse rate suggested by Adler. Although being performed at room temperature, our experiment has already exhibits advantages over those operating at low temperatures previously reported. Our results experimentally show the potential of magneto-gravitational levitated mechanical oscillator as a promising method for testing collapse model. Further improvements in cryogenic experiments are discussed.

Manipulation of a Micro-object Using Topological Hydrodynamic Tweezers

Manipulating micro-scale object plays paramount roles in a wide range of fundamental researches and applications. At micro-scale, various methods have been developed in the past decades, including optical, electric, magnetic, aerodynamic and acoustic methods. However, these non-contact forces are susceptible to external disturbance, and so finding a way to make micro-scale object manipulation immune to external perturbations is challenging and remains elusive. Here we demonstrate a method based on new trapping mechanism to manipulate micro-scale object in a gas flow at ambient conditions. We first show that the micro-droplet is entrapped into a trapping ring constructed by a particular toroidal vortex. The vortex works as tweezers to control the position of the micro-droplet. We then show that the micro-droplet can be transported along the trapping ring. By virtue of the topological character of the gas flow, the transport path is able to bypass external strong perturbations automatically. We further demonstrate a topological transfer process of the micro-droplet between two hydrodynamic tweezers. Our method provides an integrated toolbox to manipulate a micro-scale object, with an intrinsic mechanism that protects the target object from external disturbances.

Charge noise induced spin dephasing in a nanowire double quantum dot with spin-orbit coupling

Unexpected fluctuating charge field near a semiconductor quantum dot has severely limited the coherence time of the localized spin qubit. It is the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling and the asymmetrical confining potential in a quantum dot, that mediates the longitudinal interaction between the spin qubit and the fluctuating charge field. Here, we study the $1/f$ charge noise induced spin dephasing in a nanowire double quantum dot via exactly solving its eigen-energies and eigenfunctions. Our calculations demonstrate that the spin dephasing has a nonmonotonic dependence on the asymmetry of the double quantum dot confining potential. With the increase of the potential asymmetry, the dephasing rate first becomes stronger very sharply before reaching to a maximum, after that it becomes weaker softly. Also, we find that the applied external magnetic field contributes to the spin dephasing, the dephasing rate is strongest at the anti-crossing point $B_{0}$ in the double quantum dot.

Fast Symbolic 3D Registration Solution

3D registration has always been performed invoking singular value decomposition (SVD) or eigenvalue decomposition (EIG) in real engineering practices. However, these numerical algorithms suffer from uncertainty of convergence in many cases. A novel fast symbolic solution is proposed in this paper by following our recent publication in this journal. The equivalence analysis shows that our previous solver can be converted to deal with the 3D registration problem. Rather, the computation procedure is studied for further simplification of computing without complex-number support. Experimental results show that the proposed solver does not loose accuracy and robustness but improves the execution speed to a large extent by almost %50 to %80, on both personal computer and embedded processor.

Automated Artery Localization and Vessel Wall Segmentation of Magnetic Resonance Vessel Wall Images using Tracklet Refinement and Polar Conversion

Quantitative analysis of vessel wall structures by automated vessel wall segmentation provides useful imaging biomarkers in evaluating atherosclerotic lesions and plaque progression time-efficiently. To quantify vessel wall features, drawing lumen and outer wall contours of the artery of interest is required. To alleviate manual labor in contour drawing, some computer-assisted tools exist, but manual preprocessing steps, such as region of interest identification and boundary initialization are needed. In addition, the prior knowledge of the ring shape of vessel wall is not taken into consideration in designing the segmentation method. In this work, trained on manual vessel wall contours, a fully automated artery localization and vessel wall segmentation system is proposed. A tracklet refinement algorithm is used to robustly identify the centerlines of arteries of interest from a neural network localization architecture. Image patches are extracted from the centerlines and segmented in a polar coordinate system to use 3D information and to overcome problems such as contour discontinuity and interference from neighboring vessels. From a carotid artery dataset with 116 subjects (3406 slices) and a popliteal artery dataset with 5 subjects (289 slices), the proposed system is shown to robustly identify the artery of interest and segment the vessel wall. The proposed system demonstrates better performance on the carotid dataset with a Dice similarity coefficient of 0.824, compared with traditional vessel wall segmentation methods, Dice of 0.576, and traditional convolutional neural network approaches, Dice of 0.747. This vessel wall segmentation system will facilitate research on atherosclerosis and assist radiologists in image review.

Correlation-based Initialization Algorithm for Tensor-based HSI Compression Methods

Tensor decomposition (TD) is widely used in hyperspectral image (HSI) compression. The initialization of factor matrix in tensor decomposition can determine the HSI compression performance. It is worth noting that HSI is highly correlated in bands. However, this phenomenon is ignored by the previous TD method. Aiming at improving the HSI compression performance, we propose a method called correlation-based TD initialization algorithm. As HSI is well approximated by means of a reference band. In accordance with the SVD result of the reference band, the initialized factor matrices of TD are produced. We compare our methods with random and SVD-based initialization methods. The experimental results reveal that our correlation-based TD initialization method is capable of significantly reducing the computational cost of TD while keeping the initialization quality and compression performance.

A Convolutional Neural Network with Mapping Layers for Hyperspectral Image Classification

In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network with mapping layers (MCNN) for hyperspectral image (HSI) classification. The proposed mapping layers map the input patch into a low dimensional subspace by multilinear algebra. We use our mapping layers to reduce the spectral and spatial redundancy and maintain most energy of the input. The feature extracted by our mapping layers can also reduce the number of following convolutional layers for feature extraction. Our MCNN architecture avoids the declining accuracy with increasing layers phenomenon of deep learning models for HSI classification and also saves the training time for its effective mapping layers. Furthermore, we impose the 3-D convolutional kernel on convolutional layer to extract the spectral-spatial features for HSI. We tested our MCNN on three datasets of Indian Pines, University of Pavia and Salinas, and we achieved the classification accuracy of 98.3%, 99.5% and 99.3%, respectively. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed MCNN can significantly improve the classification accuracy and save much time consumption.

Deterministic facilitated excitation of the weakly-driven atom in heteronuclear Rydberg atom pairs beyond antiblockade

Due to the intrinsic strong blockaded interaction shifting the energy level of Rydberg state, the steady Rydberg probability may be substantially restrained to a low level, especially for atoms suffering from weak drivings. We report an exotic excitation facilitation using strong blockaded energy shifting the double excitation state, leading to the weakly-driven atom deterministically excited by a significantly improved fraction even at far off-resonant regimes. This phenomenon is attributed to the effective induction of a reduced detuning to the weakly-driven atom by optimizing parameters of an auxiliary strongly-driven atom, arising a modified large probability preserved for a broadening range of detunings. The influence from breaking blockade condition on the excitation probability is also discussed. In contrast to previous approaches, our excitation facilitation mechanism does not rely on antiblockade effect to the compensation of Rydberg energy, serving as a fresh way to a deterministic single-atom excitation of the target atom in a pair of heteronuclear Rydberg atoms, where a strong interatomic interaction is required.

Slowing-down reduction and Possible Reversal Trend of Tropospheric NO2 over China during 2016 to 2019

Atmospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) over China at national level has been kept reducing since 2011 as seen from both satellite observations, ground-based measurements and bottom-up emission inventory (Liu et al., 2016; Irie et al., 2016; Krotkov et al., 2016; Foy et al., 2016; Liu et al 2017). These studies used data before 2015-2016. After 2016, however, a significant slowing-down of the reduction trend and/or even a reversal trend were found in numerous provinces, particularly in those with heavy NO2 level, based on satellite observations. Error analysis on satellite data excluded cloud contamination, instrument anomalies from the main reasons of this change. Ground-based measurements show strong positive correlations with satellite observations and similar patterns of year-to-year changes of NO2 in 2018 and 2019 winter time. The temporal variations of Satellite NO2 over China are believed largely determined by surface emission from power plant and transportation. The reason for the recent change from emission perspective cannot be traced down since the national emission inventory was not updated since 2015. We therefore call on immediate attentions from both scientist community and policy makers to this phenomenon. Further efforts should be made to understand the reasons causing this change and to make associated air pollution controlling actions.

Neural Embedding for Physical Manipulations

In common real-world robotic operations, action and state spaces can be vast and sometimes unknown, and observations are often relatively sparse. How do we learn the full topology of action and state spaces when given only few and sparse observations? Inspired by the properties of grid cells in mammalian brains, we build a generative model that enforces a normalized pairwise distance constraint between the latent space and output space to achieve data-efficient discovery of output spaces. This method achieves substantially better results than prior generative models, such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Variational Auto-Encoders (VAEs). Prior models have the common issue of mode collapse and thus fail to explore the full topology of output space. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our model on various datasets both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Use of OWL and Semantic Web Technologies at Pinterest

Pinterest is a popular Web application that has over 250 million active users. It is a visual discovery engine for finding ideas for recipes, fashion, weddings, home decoration, and much more. In the last year, the company adopted Semantic Web technologies to create a knowledge graph that aims to represent the vast amount of content and users on Pinterest, to help both content recommendation and ads targeting. In this paper, we present the engineering of an OWL ontology---the Pinterest Taxonomy---that forms the core of Pinterest's knowledge graph, the Pinterest Taste Graph. We describe modeling choices and enhancements to WebProtégé that we used for the creation of the ontology. In two months, eight Pinterest engineers, without prior experience of OWL and WebProtégé, revamped an existing taxonomy of noisy terms into an OWL ontology. We share our experience and present the key aspects of our work that we believe will be useful for others working in this area.
