FluentEditor: Text-based Speech Editing by Considering Acoustic and Prosody Consistency

Text-based speech editing (TSE) techniques are designed to enable users to edit the output audio by modifying the input text transcript instead of the audio itself. Despite much progress in neural network-based TSE techniques, the current techniques have focused on reducing the difference between the generated speech segment and the reference target in the editing region, ignoring its local and global fluency in the context and original utterance. To maintain the speech fluency, we propose a fluency speech editing model, termed \textit{FluentEditor}, by considering fluency-aware training criterion in the TSE training. Specifically, the \textit{acoustic consistency constraint} aims to smooth the transition between the edited region and its neighboring acoustic segments consistent with the ground truth, while the \textit{prosody consistency constraint} seeks to ensure that the prosody attributes within the edited regions remain consistent with the overall style of the original utterance. The subjective and objective experimental results on VCTK demonstrate that our \textit{FluentEditor} outperforms all advanced baselines in terms of naturalness and fluency. The audio samples and code are available at \url{https://github.com/Ai-S2-Lab/FluentEditor}.

Emotion-Aware Prosodic Phrasing for Expressive Text-to-Speech

Prosodic phrasing is crucial to the naturalness and intelligibility of end-to-end Text-to-Speech (TTS). There exist both linguistic and emotional prosody in natural speech. As the study of prosodic phrasing has been linguistically motivated, prosodic phrasing for expressive emotion rendering has not been well studied. In this paper, we propose an emotion-aware prosodic phrasing model, termed \textit{EmoPP}, to mine the emotional cues of utterance accurately and predict appropriate phrase breaks. We first conduct objective observations on the ESD dataset to validate the strong correlation between emotion and prosodic phrasing. Then the objective and subjective evaluations show that the EmoPP outperforms all baselines and achieves remarkable performance in terms of emotion expressiveness. The audio samples and the code are available at \url{https://github.com/AI-S2-Lab/EmoPP}.

Explainable AI for tool wear prediction in turning

This research aims develop an Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) framework to facilitate human-understandable solutions for tool wear prediction during turning. A random forest algorithm was used as the supervised Machine Learning (ML) classifier for training and binary classification using acceleration, acoustics, temperature, and spindle speed during the orthogonal tube turning process as input features. The ML classifier was used to predict the condition of the tool after the cutting process, which was determined in a binary class form indicating if the cutting tool was available or failed. After the training process, the Shapley criterion was used to explain the predictions of the trained ML classifier. Specifically, the significance of each input feature in the decision-making and classification was identified to explain the reasoning of the ML classifier predictions. After implementing the Shapley criterion on all testing datasets, the tool temperature was identified as the most significant feature in determining the classification of available versus failed cutting tools. Hence, this research demonstrates capability of XAI to provide machining operators the ability to diagnose and understand complex ML classifiers in prediction of tool wear.

Aggregating Intrinsic Information to Enhance BCI Performance through Federated Learning

Insufficient data is a long-standing challenge for Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) to build a high-performance deep learning model. Though numerous research groups and institutes collect a multitude of EEG datasets for the same BCI task, sharing EEG data from multiple sites is still challenging due to the heterogeneity of devices. The significance of this challenge cannot be overstated, given the critical role of data diversity in fostering model robustness. However, existing works rarely discuss this issue, predominantly centering their attention on model training within a single dataset, often in the context of inter-subject or inter-session settings. In this work, we propose a hierarchical personalized Federated Learning EEG decoding (FLEEG) framework to surmount this challenge. This innovative framework heralds a new learning paradigm for BCI, enabling datasets with disparate data formats to collaborate in the model training process. Each client is assigned a specific dataset and trains a hierarchical personalized model to manage diverse data formats and facilitate information exchange. Meanwhile, the server coordinates the training procedure to harness knowledge gleaned from all datasets, thus elevating overall performance. The framework has been evaluated in Motor Imagery (MI) classification with nine EEG datasets collected by different devices but implementing the same MI task. Results demonstrate that the proposed frame can boost classification performance up to 16.7% by enabling knowledge sharing between multiple datasets, especially for smaller datasets. Visualization results also indicate that the proposed framework can empower the local models to put a stable focus on task-related areas, yielding better performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first end-to-end solution to address this important challenge.

Bird's-Eye-View Scene Graph for Vision-Language Navigation

Vision-language navigation (VLN), which entails an agent to navigate 3D environments following human instructions, has shown great advances. However, current agents are built upon panoramic observations, which hinders their ability to perceive 3D scene geometry and easily leads to ambiguous selection of panoramic view. To address these limitations, we present a BEV Scene Graph (BSG), which leverages multi-step BEV representations to encode scene layouts and geometric cues of indoor environment under the supervision of 3D detection. During navigation, BSG builds a local BEV representation at each step and maintains a BEV-based global scene map, which stores and organizes all the online collected local BEV representations according to their topological relations. Based on BSG, the agent predicts a local BEV grid-level decision score and a global graph-level decision score, combined with a sub-view selection score on panoramic views, for more accurate action prediction. Our approach significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods on REVERIE, R2R, and R4R, showing the potential of BEV perception in VLN.

Sequential Flipping: A Donor-Acceptor Exchange Mechanism in Water Trimer

The donor-acceptor exchange (DAE) is a significant hydrogen bond network rearrangement (HBNR) mechanism because it can lead to the change of hydrogen bond direction. In this work, we report a new DAE mechanism found in water trimer that is realized by sequential flipping (SF) of all molecules rather than the well-known proton transfer (PT) process. Meanwhile, the SF process has a much smaller potential barrier (0.262 eV) than the previously predicted collective rotation process (about 1.7 eV), implying that SF process is a main flipping process that can lead to DAE. Importantly, high-precision ab initio calculations show that SF-DAE can make the water ring to show a clear chiral difference from PT-DAE, which brings the prospect of distinguishing the two confusing processes based on circular dichroism spectra. The reaction rate analysis including the quantum tunneling indicates an obvious temperature-dependent competitive relationship between SF and PT processes, specifically, the SF process dominates above 65 K, while the PT process dominates below 65 K. Therefore, in most cases, the contribution for DAE mainly comes from the flipping process, rather than the PT process as previously thought. Our work enriches the understanding of the DAE mechanism in water trimer and provides a piece of the jigsaw that has been sought to the HBNR mechanism.

Fairness-Sensitive Policy-Gradient Reinforcement Learning for Reducing Bias in Robotic Assistance

Robots assist humans in various activities, from daily living public service (e.g., airports and restaurants), and to collaborative manufacturing. However, it is risky to assume that the knowledge and strategies robots learned from one group of people can apply to other groups. The discriminatory performance of robots will undermine their service quality for some people, ignore their service requests, and even offend them. Therefore, it is critically important to mitigate bias in robot decision-making for more fair services. In this paper, we designed a self-reflective mechanism -- Fairness-Sensitive Policy Gradient Reinforcement Learning (FSPGRL), to help robots to self-identify biased behaviors during interactions with humans. FSPGRL identifies bias by examining the abnormal update along particular gradients and updates the policy network to support fair decision-making for robots. To validate FSPGRL's effectiveness, a human-centered service scenario, "A robot is serving people in a restaurant," was designed. A user study was conducted; 24 human subjects participated in generating 1,000 service demonstrations. Four commonly-seen issues "Willingness Issue," "Priority Issue," "Quality Issue," "Risk Issue" were observed from robot behaviors. By using FSPGRL to improve robot decisions, robots were proven to have a self-bias detection capability for a more fair service. We have achieved the suppression of bias and improved the quality during the process of robot learning to realize a relatively fair model.

A Spatial-channel-temporal-fused Attention for Spiking Neural Networks

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) mimic brain computational strategies, and exhibit substantial capabilities in spatiotemporal information processing. As an essential factor for human perception, visual attention refers to the dynamic process for selecting salient regions in biological vision systems. Although visual attention mechanisms have achieved great success in computer vision applications, they are rarely introduced into SNNs. Inspired by experimental observations on predictive attentional remapping, we propose a new spatial-channel-temporal-fused attention (SCTFA) module that can guide SNNs to efficiently capture underlying target regions by utilizing accumulated historical spatial-channel information in the present study. Through a systematic evaluation on three event stream datasets (DVS Gesture, SL-Animals-DVS and MNIST-DVS), we demonstrate that the SNN with the SCTFA module (SCTFA-SNN) not only significantly outperforms the baseline SNN (BL-SNN) and two other SNN models with degenerated attention modules, but also achieves competitive accuracy with existing state-of-the-art methods. Additionally, our detailed analysis shows that the proposed SCTFA-SNN model has strong robustness to noise and outstanding stability when faced with incomplete data, while maintaining acceptable complexity and efficiency. Overall, these findings indicate that incorporating appropriate cognitive mechanisms of the brain may provide a promising approach to elevate the capabilities of SNNs.

Modeling Dynamic Heterogeneous Graph and Node Importance for Future Citation Prediction

Accurate citation count prediction of newly published papers could help editors and readers rapidly figure out the influential papers in the future. Though many approaches are proposed to predict a paper's future citation, most ignore the dynamic heterogeneous graph structure or node importance in academic networks. To cope with this problem, we propose a Dynamic heterogeneous Graph and Node Importance network (DGNI) learning framework, which fully leverages the dynamic heterogeneous graph and node importance information to predict future citation trends of newly published papers. First, a dynamic heterogeneous network embedding module is provided to capture the dynamic evolutionary trends of the whole academic network. Then, a node importance embedding module is proposed to capture the global consistency relationship to figure out each paper's node importance. Finally, the dynamic evolutionary trend embeddings and node importance embeddings calculated above are combined to jointly predict the future citation counts of each paper, by a log-normal distribution model according to multi-faced paper node representations. Extensive experiments on two large-scale datasets demonstrate that our model significantly improves all indicators compared to the SOTA models.

Distributed TD(0) with Almost No Communication

We provide a new non-asymptotic analysis of distributed temporal difference learning with linear function approximation. Our approach relies on ``one-shot averaging,'' where $N$ agents run identical local copies of the TD(0) method and average the outcomes only once at the very end. We demonstrate a version of the linear time speedup phenomenon, where the convergence time of the distributed process is a factor of $N$ faster than the convergence time of TD(0). This is the first result proving benefits from parallelism for temporal difference methods.

Betray Oneself: A Novel Audio DeepFake Detection Model via Mono-to-Stereo Conversion

Audio Deepfake Detection (ADD) aims to detect the fake audio generated by text-to-speech (TTS), voice conversion (VC) and replay, etc., which is an emerging topic. Traditionally we take the mono signal as input and focus on robust feature extraction and effective classifier design. However, the dual-channel stereo information in the audio signal also includes important cues for deepfake, which has not been studied in the prior work. In this paper, we propose a novel ADD model, termed as M2S-ADD, that attempts to discover audio authenticity cues during the mono-to-stereo conversion process. We first projects the mono to a stereo signal using a pretrained stereo synthesizer, then employs a dual-branch neural architecture to process the left and right channel signals, respectively. In this way, we effectively reveal the artifacts in the fake audio, thus improve the ADD performance. The experiments on the ASVspoof2019 database show that M2S-ADD outperforms all baselines that input mono. We release the source code at \url{https://github.com/AI-S2-Lab/M2S-ADD}.

Lightweight privacy-preserving truth discovery for vehicular air quality monitoring

Air pollution has become a global concern for many years. Vehicular crowdsensing systems make it possible to monitor air quality at a fine granularity. To better utilize the sensory data with varying credibility, truth discovery frameworks are introduced. However, in urban cities, there is a significant difference in traffic volumes of streets or blocks, which leads to a data sparsity problem for truth discovery. Protecting the privacy of participant vehicles is also a crucial task. We first present a data masking-based privacy-preserving truth discovery framework, which incorporates spatial and temporal correlations to solve the sparsity problem. To further improve the truth discovery performance of the presented framework, an enhanced version is proposed with anonymous communication and data perturbation. Both frameworks are more lightweight than the existing cryptography-based methods. We also evaluate the work with simulations and fully discuss the performance and possible extensions.

Complete replacement of magnetic flux in a flux rope during a coronal mass ejection

Solar coronal mass ejections are the most energetic events in the Solar System. In their standard formation model, a magnetic flux rope builds up into a coronal mass ejection through magnetic reconnection that continually converts overlying, untwisted magnetic flux into twisted flux enveloping the pre-existing rope. However, only a minority of coronal mass ejections carry a coherent magnetic flux rope as their core structure, which casts doubt on the universality of this orderly wrapping process. Here we provide observational evidence of a different formation and eruption mechanism of a magnetic flux rope from an S-shaped thread, where its magnetic flux is fully replaced via flare reconnections. One of the footpoints of the sigmoidal feature slipped and expanded during the formation, and then moved to a completely new place, associated with the highly dynamical evolution of flare ribbons and a twofold increase in magnetic flux through the footpoint, during the eruption. Such a configuration is not predicted by standard formation models or numerical simulations and highlights the three-dimensional nature of magnetic reconnections between the flux rope and the surrounding magnetic field.

PerCoNet: News Recommendation with Explicit Persona and Contrastive Learning

Personalized news recommender systems help users quickly find content of their interests from the sea of information. Today, the mainstream technology for personalized news recommendation is based on deep neural networks that can accurately model the semantic match between news items and users' interests. In this paper, we present \textbf{PerCoNet}, a novel deep learning approach to personalized news recommendation which features two new findings: (i) representing users through \emph{explicit persona analysis} based on the prominent entities in their recent news reading history could be more effective than latent persona analysis employed by most existing work, with a side benefit of enhanced explainability; (ii) utilizing the title and abstract of each news item via cross-view \emph{contrastive learning} would work better than just combining them directly. Extensive experiments on two real-world news datasets clearly show the superior performance of our proposed approach in comparison with current state-of-the-art techniques.

Neural Partial Differential Equations with Functional Convolution

We present a lightweighted neural PDE representation to discover the hidden structure and predict the solution of different nonlinear PDEs. Our key idea is to leverage the prior of ``translational similarity'' of numerical PDE differential operators to drastically reduce the scale of learning model and training data. We implemented three central network components, including a neural functional convolution operator, a Picard forward iterative procedure, and an adjoint backward gradient calculator. Our novel paradigm fully leverages the multifaceted priors that stem from the sparse and smooth nature of the physical PDE solution manifold and the various mature numerical techniques such as adjoint solver, linearization, and iterative procedure to accelerate the computation. We demonstrate the efficacy of our method by robustly discovering the model and accurately predicting the solutions of various types of PDEs with small-scale networks and training sets. We highlight that all the PDE examples we showed were trained with up to 8 data samples and within 325 network parameters.

The Solar Upper Transition Region Imager (SUTRI) onboard the SATech-01 satellite

The Solar Upper Transition Region Imager (SUTRI) onboard the Space Advanced Technology demonstration satellite (SATech-01), which was launched to a sun-synchronous orbit at a height of 500 km in July 2022, aims to test the on-orbit performance of our newly developed Sc-Si multi-layer reflecting mirror and the 2kx2k EUV CMOS imaging camera and to take full-disk solar images at the Ne VII 46.5 nm spectral line with a filter width of 3 nm. SUTRI employs a Ritchey-Chretien optical system with an aperture of 18 cm. The on-orbit observations show that SUTRI images have a field of view of 41.6'x41.6' and a moderate spatial resolution of 8" without an image stabilization system. The normal cadence of SUTRI images is 30 s and the solar observation time is about 16 hours each day because the earth eclipse time accounts for about 1/3 of SATech-01's orbit period. Approximately 15 GB data is acquired each day and made available online after processing. SUTRI images are valuable as the Ne VII 46.5 nm line is formed at a temperature regime of 0.5 MK in the solar atmosphere, which has rarely been sampled by existing solar imagers. SUTRI observations will establish connections between structures in the lower solar atmosphere and corona, and advance our understanding of various types of solar activity such as flares, filament eruptions, coronal jets and coronal mass ejections.

Coverage-centric Coreset Selection for High Pruning Rates

One-shot coreset selection aims to select a representative subset of the training data, given a pruning rate, that can later be used to train future models while retaining high accuracy. State-of-the-art coreset selection methods pick the highest importance examples based on an importance metric and are found to perform well at low pruning rates. However, at high pruning rates, they suffer from a catastrophic accuracy drop, performing worse than even random sampling. This paper explores the reasons behind this accuracy drop both theoretically and empirically. We first propose a novel metric to measure the coverage of a dataset on a specific distribution by extending the classical geometric set cover problem to a distribution cover problem. This metric helps explain why coresets selected by SOTA methods at high pruning rates perform poorly compared to random sampling because of worse data coverage. We then propose a novel one-shot coreset selection method, Coverage-centric Coreset Selection (CCS), that jointly considers overall data coverage upon a distribution as well as the importance of each example. We evaluate CCS on five datasets and show that, at high pruning rates (e.g., 90%), it achieves significantly better accuracy than previous SOTA methods (e.g., at least 19.56% higher on CIFAR10) as well as random selection (e.g., 7.04% higher on CIFAR10) and comparable accuracy at low pruning rates. We make our code publicly available at https://github.com/haizhongzheng/Coverage-centric-coreset-selection.
