Boosting the Generalization and Reasoning of Vision Language Models with Curriculum Reinforcement Learning

While state-of-the-art vision-language models (VLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in complex visual-text tasks, their success heavily relies on massive model scaling, limiting their practical deployment. Small-scale VLMs offer a more practical alternative but face significant challenges when trained with traditional supervised fine-tuning (SFT), particularly in two aspects: out-of-domain (OOD) generalization and reasoning abilities, which significantly lags behind the contemporary Large language models (LLMs). To address these challenges, we propose Curriculum Reinforcement Finetuning (Curr-ReFT), a novel post-training paradigm specifically designed for small-scale VLMs. Inspired by the success of reinforcement learning in LLMs, Curr-ReFT comprises two sequential stages: (1) Curriculum Reinforcement Learning, which ensures steady progression of model capabilities through difficulty-aware reward design, transitioning from basic visual perception to complex reasoning tasks; and (2) Rejected Sampling-based Self-improvement, which maintains the fundamental capabilities of VLMs through selective learning from high-quality multimodal and language examples. Extensive experiments demonstrate that models trained with Curr-ReFT paradigm achieve state-of-the-art performance across various visual tasks in both in-domain and out-of-domain settings. Moreover, our Curr-ReFT enhanced 3B model matches the performance of 32B-parameter models, demonstrating that efficient training paradigms can effectively bridge the gap between small and large models.

DecoupledGaussian: Object-Scene Decoupling for Physics-Based Interaction

We present DecoupledGaussian, a novel system that decouples static objects from their contacted surfaces captured in-the-wild videos, a key prerequisite for realistic Newtonian-based physical simulations. Unlike prior methods focused on synthetic data or elastic jittering along the contact surface, which prevent objects from fully detaching or moving independently, DecoupledGaussian allows for significant positional changes without being constrained by the initial contacted surface. Recognizing the limitations of current 2D inpainting tools for restoring 3D locations, our approach proposes joint Poisson fields to repair and expand the Gaussians of both objects and contacted scenes after separation. This is complemented by a multi-carve strategy to refine the object's geometry. Our system enables realistic simulations of decoupling motions, collisions, and fractures driven by user-specified impulses, supporting complex interactions within and across multiple scenes. We validate DecoupledGaussian through a comprehensive user study and quantitative benchmarks. This system enhances digital interaction with objects and scenes in real-world environments, benefiting industries such as VR, robotics, and autonomous driving. Research on visual simultaneous localization and mapping technology based on near infrared light

In view of the problems that visual simultaneous localization and mapping (VSLAM) are susceptible to environmental light interference and luminosity inconsistency, the visual simultaneous localization and mapping technology based on near infrared perception (NIR-VSLAM) is proposed. In order to avoid ambient light interference, the near infrared light is innovatively selected as the light source. The luminosity parameter estimation of error energy function, halo factor and exposure time and the light source irradiance correction method are proposed in this paper, which greatly improves the positioning accuracy of Direct Sparse Odometry (DSO). The feasibility of the proposed method in four large scenes is verified, which provides the reference for visual positioning in automatic driving and mobile robot.

Anywhere: A Multi-Agent Framework for User-Guided, Reliable, and Diverse Foreground-Conditioned Image Generation

Recent advancements in image-conditioned image generation have demonstrated substantial progress. However, foreground-conditioned image generation remains underexplored, encountering challenges such as compromised object integrity, foreground-background inconsistencies, limited diversity, and reduced control flexibility. These challenges arise from current end-to-end inpainting models, which suffer from inaccurate training masks, limited foreground semantic understanding, data distribution biases, and inherent interference between visual and textual prompts. To overcome these limitations, we present Anywhere, a multi-agent framework that departs from the traditional end-to-end approach. In this framework, each agent is specialized in a distinct aspect, such as foreground understanding, diversity enhancement, object integrity protection, and textual prompt consistency. Our framework is further enhanced with the ability to incorporate optional user textual inputs, perform automated quality assessments, and initiate re-generation as needed. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that this modular design effectively overcomes the limitations of existing end-to-end models, resulting in higher fidelity, quality, diversity and controllability in foreground-conditioned image generation. Additionally, the Anywhere framework is extensible, allowing it to benefit from future advancements in each individual agent.

SigStyle: Signature Style Transfer via Personalized Text-to-Image Models

Style transfer enables the seamless integration of artistic styles from a style image into a content image, resulting in visually striking and aesthetically enriched outputs. Despite numerous advances in this field, existing methods did not explicitly focus on the signature style, which represents the distinct and recognizable visual traits of the image such as geometric and structural patterns, color palettes and brush strokes etc. In this paper, we introduce SigStyle, a framework that leverages the semantic priors that embedded in a personalized text-to-image diffusion model to capture the signature style representation. This style capture process is powered by a hypernetwork that efficiently fine-tunes the diffusion model for any given single style image. Style transfer then is conceptualized as the reconstruction process of content image through learned style tokens from the personalized diffusion model. Additionally, to ensure the content consistency throughout the style transfer process, we introduce a time-aware attention swapping technique that incorporates content information from the original image into the early denoising steps of target image generation. Beyond enabling high-quality signature style transfer across a wide range of styles, SigStyle supports multiple interesting applications, such as local style transfer, texture transfer, style fusion and style-guided text-to-image generation. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrate our approach outperforms existing style transfer methods for recognizing and transferring the signature styles.

DP-Adapter: Dual-Pathway Adapter for Boosting Fidelity and Text Consistency in Customizable Human Image Generation

With the growing popularity of personalized human content creation and sharing, there is a rising demand for advanced techniques in customized human image generation. However, current methods struggle to simultaneously maintain the fidelity of human identity and ensure the consistency of textual prompts, often resulting in suboptimal outcomes. This shortcoming is primarily due to the lack of effective constraints during the simultaneous integration of visual and textual prompts, leading to unhealthy mutual interference that compromises the full expression of both types of input. Building on prior research that suggests visual and textual conditions influence different regions of an image in distinct ways, we introduce a novel Dual-Pathway Adapter (DP-Adapter) to enhance both high-fidelity identity preservation and textual consistency in personalized human image generation. Our approach begins by decoupling the target human image into visually sensitive and text-sensitive regions. For visually sensitive regions, DP-Adapter employs an Identity-Enhancing Adapter (IEA) to preserve detailed identity features. For text-sensitive regions, we introduce a Textual-Consistency Adapter (TCA) to minimize visual interference and ensure the consistency of textual semantics. To seamlessly integrate these pathways, we develop a Fine-Grained Feature-Level Blending (FFB) module that efficiently combines hierarchical semantic features from both pathways, resulting in more natural and coherent synthesis outcomes. Additionally, DP-Adapter supports various innovative applications, including controllable headshot-to-full-body portrait generation, age editing, old-photo to reality, and expression editing.

Soliton microcombs in X-cut LiNbO3 microresonators

Chip-scale integration of optical frequency combs, particularly soliton microcombs, enables miniaturized instrumentation for timekeeping, ranging, and spectroscopy. Although soliton microcombs have been demonstrated on various material platforms, realizing complete comb functionality on photonic chips requires the co-integration of high-speed modulators and efficient frequency doublers, features that are available in a monolithic form on X-cut thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN). However, the pronounced Raman nonlinearity associated with extraordinary light in this platform has so far precluded soliton microcomb generation. Here, we report the generation of transverse-electric-polarized soliton microcombs with a 25 GHz repetition rate in high-Q microresonators on X-cut TFLN chips. By precisely orienting the racetrack microresonator relative to the optical axis, we mitigate Raman nonlinearity and enable soliton formation under continuous-wave laser pumping. Moreover, the soliton microcomb spectra are extended to 350 nm with pulsed laser pumping. This work expands the capabilities of TFLN photonics and paves the way for the monolithic integration of fast-tunable, self-referenced microcombs.

SuperNeRF-GAN: A Universal 3D-Consistent Super-Resolution Framework for Efficient and Enhanced 3D-Aware Image Synthesis

Neural volume rendering techniques, such as NeRF, have revolutionized 3D-aware image synthesis by enabling the generation of images of a single scene or object from various camera poses. However, the high computational cost of NeRF presents challenges for synthesizing high-resolution (HR) images. Most existing methods address this issue by leveraging 2D super-resolution, which compromise 3D-consistency. Other methods propose radiance manifolds or two-stage generation to achieve 3D-consistent HR synthesis, yet they are limited to specific synthesis tasks, reducing their universality. To tackle these challenges, we propose SuperNeRF-GAN, a universal framework for 3D-consistent super-resolution. A key highlight of SuperNeRF-GAN is its seamless integration with NeRF-based 3D-aware image synthesis methods and it can simultaneously enhance the resolution of generated images while preserving 3D-consistency and reducing computational cost. Specifically, given a pre-trained generator capable of producing a NeRF representation such as tri-plane, we first perform volume rendering to obtain a low-resolution image with corresponding depth and normal map. Then, we employ a NeRF Super-Resolution module which learns a network to obtain a high-resolution NeRF. Next, we propose a novel Depth-Guided Rendering process which contains three simple yet effective steps, including the construction of a boundary-correct multi-depth map through depth aggregation, a normal-guided depth super-resolution and a depth-guided NeRF rendering. Experimental results demonstrate the superior efficiency, 3D-consistency, and quality of our approach. Additionally, ablation studies confirm the effectiveness of our proposed components.

Dilated space-and-wavelength selective crosspoint optical switch

Photonic integrated switches that are both space and wavelength selective are a highly promising technology for data-intensive applications as they benefit from multi-dimensional manipulation of optical signals. However, scaling these switches normally poses stringent challenges such as increased fabrication complexity and control difficulties, due to the growing number of switching elements. In this work, we propose a new type of dilated crosspoint topology, which efficiently handles both space and wavelength selective switching, while reducing the required switching element count by an order of magnitude compared to reported designs. To the best of our knowledge, our design requires the fewest switching elements for an equivalent routing paths number and it fully cancels the first-order in-band crosstalk. We demonstrate such an ultra-compact space-and-wavelength-selective switch (SWSS) at a scale of $4\times 4\times 4λ$ on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. Experimental results reveal that the switch achieves an insertion loss ranging from 2.3 dB to 8.6 dB and crosstalk levels in between -35.3 dB and -59.7 dB. The add-drop microring-resonators (MRRs) are equipped with micro-heaters, exhibiting a rise and fall time of 46 $μ$s and 0.33 $μ$s, respectively. These performance characteristics highlight the switch's ultra-low element count and crosstalk with low insertion loss, making it a promising candidate for advanced data center applications.

CHASE: A Native Relational Database for Hybrid Queries on Structured and Unstructured Data

Querying both structured and unstructured data has become a new paradigm in data analytics and recommendation. With unstructured data, such as text and videos, are converted to high-dimensional vectors and queried with approximate nearest neighbor search (ANNS). State-of-the-art database systems implement vector search as a plugin in the relational query engine, which tries to utilize the ANN index to enhance performance. After investigating a broad range of hybrid queries, we find that such designs may miss potential optimization opportunities and achieve suboptimal performance for certain queries. In this paper, we propose CHASE, a query engine that is natively designed to support efficient hybrid queries on structured and unstructured data. CHASE performs specific designs and optimizations on multiple stages in query processing. First, semantic analysis is performed to categorize queries and optimize query plans dynamically. Second, new physical operators are implemented to avoid redundant computations, which is the case with existing operators. Third, compilation-based techniques are adopted for efficient machine code generation. Extensive evaluations using real-world datasets demonstrate that CHASE achieves substantial performance improvements, with speedups ranging from 13% to an extraordinary 7500 times compared to existing systems. These results highlight CHASE's potential as a robust solution for executing hybrid queries.

Combined selective plane illumination microscopy (SPIM) and full-field optical coherence tomography (FF-OCT) for in vivo imaging

Selective plane illumination microscopy (SPIM), also known as light sheet fluorescence microscopy, provides high specificity through fluorescence labeling. However, it lacks complementary structural information from the surrounding context, which is essential for the comprehensive analysis of biological samples. Here, we present a high-resolution, multimodal imaging system that integrates SPIM with full-field optical coherence tomography (FF-OCT), without requiring modifications to the existing SPIM setup. Both SPIM and FF-OCT offer low phototoxicity and intrinsic optical sectioning, making them well-suited for in vivo imaging. Their shared detection path enables seamless and efficient co-registration of fluorescence and structural data. We demonstrate the functionality of this combined system by performing in vivo imaging of zebrafish larvae.

Unlocking Electro-optic Resonant Phase Shifting for Multi-dimensional, Ultra-dynamic Photonic Switches

Optical circuit switching is connection-oriented, being deterministic through the reservation of a complete wavelength channel or spatial path for a certain period. However, this comes at a trade-off against link dynamics, and overall capacity can thus be constrained by the time slot reservations, especially for switches with microsecond- to millisecond-scale reconfiguration times. For data-intensive applications, the communication patterns associated with random data sets typically yield short-lived flows. This situation calls for a new multi-dimensional switching paradigm that fully exploits not only the space and wavelength domains but also with nanosecond-scale reconfigurable capability in the time domain to enable ultra-dynamic links. In this work, we focus on the exploitation of micro-ring resonant phase shifters (RPSs) that are wavelength selective for optical switching in a single plane. By proposing an innovative analytical method with transmission circle chart, we fully unlock the power of RPS with nanosecond-scale reconfigurability and the capability to arbitrarily manipulate its phase and amplitude. Such a compact model offers fresh insights into designs with under and critically coupled RPSs beyond the commonly explored over-coupling condition. This creates not only versatile switch elements but also perfect absorbers for robust multi-wavelength operations. The proposed device can bring about a breakthrough in the optical switching capacity that potentially addresses the challenges faced by modern data center networks, as well as other photonic circuits for high-throughput signal processing.

Lower order mixed elements for the linear elasticity problem in 2D and 3D

In this paper, we construct two lower order mixed elements for the linear elasticity problem in the Hellinger-Reissner formulation, one for the 2D problem and one for the 3D problem, both on macro-element meshes. The discrete stress spaces enrich the analogous $P_k$ stress spaces in [J. Hu and S. Zhang, arxiv, 2014, J. Hu and S. Zhang, Sci. China Math., 2015] with simple macro-element bubble functions, and the discrete displacement spaces are discontinuous piecewise $P_{k-1}$ polynomial spaces, with $k=2,3$, respectively. Discrete stability and optimal convergence is proved by using the macro-element technique. As a byproduct, the discrete stability and optimal convergence of the $P_2-P_1$ mixed element in [L. Chen and X. Huang, SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 2022] in 3D is proved on another macro-element mesh. For the mixed element in 2D, an $H^2$-conforming composite element is constructed and an exact discrete elasticity sequence is presented. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical results.

One-Shot Learning for Pose-Guided Person Image Synthesis in the Wild

Current Pose-Guided Person Image Synthesis (PGPIS) methods depend heavily on large amounts of labeled triplet data to train the generator in a supervised manner. However, they often falter when applied to in-the-wild samples, primarily due to the distribution gap between the training datasets and real-world test samples. While some researchers aim to enhance model generalizability through sophisticated training procedures, advanced architectures, or by creating more diverse datasets, we adopt the test-time fine-tuning paradigm to customize a pre-trained Text2Image (T2I) model. However, naively applying test-time tuning results in inconsistencies in facial identities and appearance attributes. To address this, we introduce a Visual Consistency Module (VCM), which enhances appearance consistency by combining the face, text, and image embedding. Our approach, named OnePoseTrans, requires only a single source image to generate high-quality pose transfer results, offering greater stability than state-of-the-art data-driven methods. For each test case, OnePoseTrans customizes a model in around 48 seconds with an NVIDIA V100 GPU.

Construction of various time-dependent Hamiltonians on a single photonic chip

Integrated photonics provides an important platform for simulating physical models with high-performance chip-scale devices, where the lattice size and the time-dependence of a model are key ingredients for further enriching the functionality of a photonic chip. Here, we propose and demonstrate the construction of various time-dependent Hamiltonian models using a single microresonator on thin-film lithium niobate chip. Such an integrated microresonator holds high quality factor to 10^6, and supports the construction of the synthetic frequency lattice with effective lattice sites up to 152 under the electro-optic modulation. By further applying a bichromatic modulation composed of two radio-frequency signals oppositely detuned from the resonant frequency in the microresonator, we build different time-dependent Hamiltonians with the time-varying nearest-neighbor coupling strength in synthetic frequency lattice. We measure the temporal features from capturing the dynamic band structures of the lattice and demonstrate a variety of time-dependent synthetic lattice models by engineering the driven pattern of the modulation, highlighting great flexibility of the microresonator. Our work shows a photonic chip for simulating versatile time-dependent Hamiltonians, which pushes forward quantum simulations in integrated photonics with great experimental tunability and reconfigurability.

RoSE-Opt: Robust and Efficient Analog Circuit Parameter Optimization with Knowledge-infused Reinforcement Learning

This paper proposes a learning framework, RoSE-Opt, to achieve robust and efficient analog circuit parameter optimization. RoSE-Opt has two important features. First, it incorporates key domain knowledge of analog circuit design, such as circuit topology, couplings between circuit specifications, and variations of process, supply voltage, and temperature, into the learning loop. This strategy facilitates the training of an artificial agent capable of achieving design goals by identifying device parameters that are optimal and robust. Second, it exploits a two-level optimization method, that is, integrating Bayesian optimization (BO) with reinforcement learning (RL) to improve sample efficiency. In particular, BO is used for a coarse yet quick search of an initial starting point for optimization. This sets a solid foundation to efficiently train the RL agent with fewer samples. Experimental evaluations on benchmarking circuits show promising sample efficiency, extraordinary figure-of-merit in terms of design efficiency and design success rate, and Pareto optimality in circuit performance of our framework, compared to previous methods. Furthermore, this work thoroughly studies the performance of different RL optimization algorithms, such as Deep Deterministic Policy Gradients (DDPG) with an off-policy learning mechanism and Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) with an on-policy learning mechanism. This investigation provides users with guidance on choosing the appropriate RL algorithms to optimize the device parameters of analog circuits. Finally, our study also demonstrates RoSE-Opt's promise in parasitic-aware device optimization for analog circuits. In summary, our work reports a knowledge-infused BO-RL design automation framework for reliable and efficient optimization of analog circuits' device parameters.

A Dataset and Benchmark for Copyright Infringement Unlearning from Text-to-Image Diffusion Models

Copyright law confers upon creators the exclusive rights to reproduce, distribute, and monetize their creative works. However, recent progress in text-to-image generation has introduced formidable challenges to copyright enforcement. These technologies enable the unauthorized learning and replication of copyrighted content, artistic creations, and likenesses, leading to the proliferation of unregulated content. Notably, models like stable diffusion, which excel in text-to-image synthesis, heighten the risk of copyright infringement and unauthorized distribution.Machine unlearning, which seeks to eradicate the influence of specific data or concepts from machine learning models, emerges as a promising solution by eliminating the \enquote{copyright memories} ingrained in diffusion models. Yet, the absence of comprehensive large-scale datasets and standardized benchmarks for evaluating the efficacy of unlearning techniques in the copyright protection scenarios impedes the development of more effective unlearning methods. To address this gap, we introduce a novel pipeline that harmonizes CLIP, ChatGPT, and diffusion models to curate a dataset. This dataset encompasses anchor images, associated prompts, and images synthesized by text-to-image models. Additionally, we have developed a mixed metric based on semantic and style information, validated through both human and artist assessments, to gauge the effectiveness of unlearning approaches. Our dataset, benchmark library, and evaluation metrics will be made publicly available to foster future research and practical applications (https://rmpku.github.io/CPDM-page/, website / http://149.104.22.83/unlearning.tar.gz, dataset).
