Unveiling the Enhancement of Spontaneous Emission at Exceptional Points

Exceptional points (EPs), singularities of non-Hermitian physics where complex spectral resonances degenerate, are one of the most exotic features of nonequilibrium open systems with unique properties. For instance, the emission rate of quantum emitters placed near resonators with EPs is enhanced (compared to the free-space emission rate) by a factor that scales quadratically with the resonance quality factor. Here, we verify the theory of spontaneous emission at EPs by measuring photoluminescence from photonic-crystal slabs that are embedded with a high-quantum-yield active material. While our experimental results verify the theoretically predicted enhancement, it also highlights the practical limitations on the enhancement due to material loss. Our designed structures can be used in applications that require enhanced and controlled emission, such as quantum sensing and imaging.

Direct Measurement of a Non-Hermitian Topological Invariant in a Hybrid Light-Matter System

Topology is central to understanding and engineering materials that display robust physical phenomena immune to imperfections. Different topological phases of matter are characterised by topological invariants. In energy-conserving (Hermitian) systems, these invariants are determined by the winding of eigenstates in momentum space. In non-Hermitian systems, a novel topological invariant is predicted to emerge from the winding of the complex eigenenergies. Here, we directly measure the non-Hermitian topological invariant arising from exceptional points in the momentum-resolved spectrum of exciton polaritons. These are hybrid light-matter quasiparticles formed by photons strongly coupled to electron-hole pairs (excitons) in a halide perovskite semiconductor at room temperature. We experimentally map out both the real (energy) and imaginary (linewidth) parts of the spectrum near the exceptional points and extract the novel topological invariant - fractional spectral winding. Our work represents an essential step towards realisation of non-Hermitian topological phases in a condensed matter system.

SGE net: Video object detection with squeezed GRU and information entropy map

Recently, deep learning based video object detection has attracted more and more attention. Compared with object detection of static images, video object detection is more challenging due to the motion of objects, while providing rich temporal information. The RNN-based algorithm is an effective way to enhance detection performance in videos with temporal information. However, most studies in this area only focus on accuracy while ignoring the calculation cost and the number of parameters. In this paper, we propose an efficient method that combines channel-reduced convolutional GRU (Squeezed GRU), and Information Entropy map for video object detection (SGE-Net). The experimental results validate the accuracy improvement, computational savings of the Squeezed GRU, and superiority of the information entropy attention mechanism on the classification performance. The mAP has increased by 3.7 contrasted with the baseline, and the number of parameters has decreased from 6.33 million to 0.67 million compared with the standard GRU.

Deep Learning for Depression Recognition with Audiovisual Cues: A Review

With the acceleration of the pace of work and life, people have to face more and more pressure, which increases the possibility of suffering from depression. However, many patients may fail to get a timely diagnosis due to the serious imbalance in the doctor-patient ratio in the world. Promisingly, physiological and psychological studies have indicated some differences in speech and facial expression between patients with depression and healthy individuals. Consequently, to improve current medical care, many scholars have used deep learning to extract a representation of depression cues in audio and video for automatic depression detection. To sort out and summarize these works, this review introduces the databases and describes objective markers for automatic depression estimation (ADE). Furthermore, we review the deep learning methods for automatic depression detection to extract the representation of depression from audio and video. Finally, this paper discusses challenges and promising directions related to automatic diagnosing of depression using deep learning technologies.

Optical Control of Topological Polariton Phase in a Perovskite Lattice

Strong light-matter interaction enriches topological photonics by dressing light with matter, which provides the possibility to realize tuneable topological devices with immunity to defects. Topological exciton polaritons, half-light half-matter quasiparticles with giant optical nonlinearity represent a unique platform for active topological photonics with phase tunability. Previous demonstrations of exciton polariton topological insulators still demand cryogenic temperatures and their topological properties are usually fixed without phase tunability. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a room-temperature exciton polariton topological insulator with active phase tunability in a perovskite zigzag lattice. Polarization serves as a degree of freedom to control the reversible transition between distinct topological phases, thanks to the polarization-dependent anisotropy in halide perovskite microcavities. The topologically nontrivial polariton states localized in the edges persist in the presence of a natural defect, showing strong immunity to disorder. We further demonstrate that exciton polaritons can condense into the topological edge states under optical pumping. These results provide an ideal platform for realizing tuneable topological polaritonic devices with room-temperature operation, which can find important applications in optical control, modulation and switching.

Ultralow Threshold Polariton Condensate in a Monolayer Semiconductor Microcavity at Room Temperature

Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides possess valley dependent functionalities that are usually available only at crogenic temperatures, constrained by various valley depolarization scatterings. The formation of exciton polaritons by coherently superimposing excitons and microcavity photons potentially harnesses the valley polarized polariton polariton interactions for novel valleytronics devices. Robust EPs have been demonstrated at room temperature in TMDs microcavity, however, the coherent polariton lasing and condensation remain elusive. Herein, we demonstrate for the first time the realization of EP condensation in a TMD microcavity at room temperature. The continuous wave pumped EP condensation and lasing with ultralow thresholdsis evidenced by the macroscopic occupation of the ground state, that undergoes a nonlinear increase of the emission and a continuous blueshift, a build up of spatial coherence, and a detuning-controlled threshold. Our work presents a critically important step towards exploiting nonlinear polariton polariton interactions and polaritonic devices with valley functionality at room temperature.

Observation of Exciton Polariton Condensation in a Perovskite Lattice at Room Temperature

Bose-Einstein condensation in strongly correlated lattices provides the possibility to coherently generate macroscopic quantum states, which have attracted tremendous attention as ideal platforms for quantum simulation. Ultracold atoms in optical lattices are one of such promising systems, where their realizations of different phases of matter exhibit promising applications in condensed matter physics, chemistry, and cosmology. Nevertheless, this is only accessible with ultralow temperatures in the nano to micro Kelvin scale set by the typical inverse mass of an atom. Alternative systems such as lattices of trapped ions and superconducting circuit arrays also rely on ultracold temperatures. Exciton polaritons with extremely light effective mass, are regarded as promising alternatives to realize Bose-Einstein condensation in lattices at higher temperatures. Along with the condensation, an efficient exciton polariton quantum simulator would require a strong lattice with robust trapping at each lattice site as well as strong inter-site coupling to allow coherent quantum motion of polaritons within the lattice. However, exciton polaritons in a strong lattice have only been shown to condense at liquid helium temperatures. Here, we report the observation of exciton polariton condensation in a one-dimensional strong lead halide perovskite lattice at room temperature. Modulated by deep periodic potentials, the strong lead halide perovskite lattice exhibits a large forbidden bandgap opening up to 13.3 meV and a lattice band up to 8.5 meV wide, which are at least 10 times larger than previous systems. Above a critical density, we observe exciton polariton condensation into py orbital states with long-range spatial coherence at room temperature. Our result opens the route to the implementation of polariton condensates in quantum simulators at room temperature.

Hybrid Actor-Critic Reinforcement Learning in Parameterized Action Space

In this paper we propose a hybrid architecture of actor-critic algorithms for reinforcement learning in parameterized action space, which consists of multiple parallel sub-actor networks to decompose the structured action space into simpler action spaces along with a critic network to guide the training of all sub-actor networks. While this paper is mainly focused on parameterized action space, the proposed architecture, which we call hybrid actor-critic, can be extended for more general action spaces which has a hierarchical structure. We present an instance of the hybrid actor-critic architecture based on proximal policy optimization (PPO), which we refer to as hybrid proximal policy optimization (H-PPO). Our experiments test H-PPO on a collection of tasks with parameterized action space, where H-PPO demonstrates superior performance over previous methods of parameterized action reinforcement learning.

An Accurate and Transferable Machine-Learning Interatomic Potential for Silicon

The development of modern ab initio methods has rapidly increased our understanding of physics, chemistry and materials science. Unfortunately, intensive ab initio calculations are intractable for large and complex systems. On the other hand, empirical force fields are less accurate with poor transferability even though they are efficient to handle large and complex systems. The recent development of machine-learning based neural-network (NN) for local atomic environment representation of density functional theory (DFT) has offered a promising solution to this long-standing challenge. Si is one of the most important elements in science and technology, however, an accurate and transferable interatomic potential for Si is still lacking. Here, we develop a generalized NN potential for Si, which correctly predicts the Si(111)-(7x7) ground-state surface reconstruction for the first time and accurately reproduces the DFT results in a wide range of complex Si structures. We envision similar developments will be made for a wide range of materials systems in the near future.

Highly efficient visible colloidal lead-halide perovskite nanocrystal light-emitting diodes

Lead-halide perovskites have been attracting attention for potential use in solid-state lighting. Following the footsteps of solar cells, the field of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) has been growing rapidly. Their application prospects in lighting, however, remain still uncertain due to a variety of shortcomings in device performance including their limited levels of luminous efficiency achievable thus far. Here we show high-efficiency PeLEDs based on colloidal perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) synthesized at room temperature possessing dominant first-order excitonic radiation (enabling a photoluminescence quantum yield of 71% in solid film), unlike in the case of bulk perovskites with slow electron-hole bimolecular radiative recombination (a second-order process). In these PeLEDs, by reaching charge balance in the recombination zone, we find that the Auger nonradiative recombination, with its significant role in emission quenching, is effectively suppressed in low driving current density range. In consequence, these devices reach a record high maximum external quantum efficiency of 12.9% reported to date and an unprecedentedly high power efficiency of 30.3 lm W-1 at luminance levels above 1000 cd m-2 as required for various applications. These findings suggest that, with feasible levels of device performance, the PeNCs hold great promise for their use in LED lighting and displays.

Room Temperature Polariton Lasing in All-Inorganic Perovskites

Polariton lasing is the coherent emission arising from a macroscopic polariton condensate first proposed in 1996. Over the past two decades, polariton lasing has been demonstrated in a few inorganic and organic semiconductors in both low and room temperatures. Polariton lasing in inorganic materials significantly relies on sophisticated epitaxial growth of crystalline gain medium layers sandwiched by two distributed Bragg reflectors in which combating the built-in strain and mismatched thermal properties is nontrivial. On the other hand, organic active media usually suffer from large threshold density and weak nonlinearity due to the Frenkel exciton nature. Further development of polariton lasing towards technologically significant applications demand more accessible materials, ease of device fabrication and broadly tunable emission at room temperature. Herein, we report the experimental realization of room-temperature polariton lasing based on an epitaxy-free all-inorganic cesium lead chloride perovskite microcavity. Polariton lasing is unambiguously evidenced by a superlinear power dependence, macroscopic ground state occupation, blueshift of ground state emission, narrowing of the linewidth and the build-up of long-range spatial coherence. Our work suggests considerable promise of lead halide perovskites towards large-area, low-cost, high performance room temperature polariton devices and coherent light sources extending from the ultraviolet to near infrared range.
