Origin of the exotic electronic states in antiferromagnetic NdSb

Using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and first principle calculations, we report that the possible unconventional 2q antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in NdSb can induce unusual modulation on its electronic structure. The obvious extra bands observed in the AFM phase of NdSb are well reproduced by theoretical calculations, in which the Fermi-arc-like structures and sharp extra bands are originated from the in-gap surface states. However, they are demonstrated to be topological trivial. By tuning the chemical potential, the AFM phase of NdSb would go through a topological phase transition, realizing a magnetic topological insulator phase. Hence, our study sheds new light on the rare earth monopnictides for searching unusual AFM structure and the potential of intrinsic magnetic topological materials.

Globally Consistent Normal Orientation for Point Clouds by Regularizing the Winding-Number Field

Estimating normals with globally consistent orientations for a raw point cloud has many downstream geometry processing applications. Despite tremendous efforts in the past decades, it remains challenging to deal with an unoriented point cloud with various imperfections, particularly in the presence of data sparsity coupled with nearby gaps or thin-walled structures. In this paper, we propose a smooth objective function to characterize the requirements of an acceptable winding-number field, which allows one to find the globally consistent normal orientations starting from a set of completely random normals. By taking the vertices of the Voronoi diagram of the point cloud as examination points, we consider the following three requirements: (1) the winding number is either 0 or 1, (2) the occurrences of 1 and the occurrences of 0 are balanced around the point cloud, and (3) the normals align with the outside Voronoi poles as much as possible. Extensive experimental results show that our method outperforms the existing approaches, especially in handling sparse and noisy point clouds, as well as shapes with complex geometry/topology.

Phase Stability of Hexagonal/cubic Boron Nitride Nanocomposites

Boron nitride (BN) is an exceptional material and among its polymorphs, two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal and three-dimensional (3D) cubic BN (h-BN and c-BN) phases are most common. The phase stability regimes of these BN phases are still under debate and phase transformations of h-BN/c-BN remain a topic of interest. Here, we investigate the phase stability of 2D/3D h-BN/c-BN nanocomposites and show that the co-existence of two phases can lead to strong non-linear optical properties and low thermal conductivity at room temperature. Furthermore, spark-plasma sintering of the nanocomposite shows complete phase transformation to 2D h-BN with improved crystalline quality, where 3D c-BN grain sizes governs the nucleation and growth kinetics. Our demonstration might be insightful in phase engineering of BN polymorphs based nanocomposites with desirable properties for optoelectronics and thermal energy management applications.

SGDA: Towards 3D Universal Pulmonary Nodule Detection via Slice Grouped Domain Attention

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. The best solution for lung cancer is to diagnose the pulmonary nodules in the early stage, which is usually accomplished with the aid of thoracic computed tomography (CT). As deep learning thrives, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been introduced into pulmonary nodule detection to help doctors in this labor-intensive task and demonstrated to be very effective. However, the current pulmonary nodule detection methods are usually domain-specific, and cannot satisfy the requirement of working in diverse real-world scenarios. To address this issue, we propose a slice grouped domain attention (SGDA) module to enhance the generalization capability of the pulmonary nodule detection networks. This attention module works in the axial, coronal, and sagittal directions. In each direction, we divide the input feature into groups, and for each group, we utilize a universal adapter bank to capture the feature subspaces of the domains spanned by all pulmonary nodule datasets. Then the bank outputs are combined from the perspective of domain to modulate the input group. Extensive experiments demonstrate that SGDA enables substantially better multi-domain pulmonary nodule detection performance compared with the state-of-the-art multi-domain learning methods.

Controllable CVD-Growth of 2D Cr5Te8 Nanosheets with Thickness-Dependent Magnetic Domains

As a typical 2D magnetic material with self-intercalated structure, Cr5Te8 exhibits many fascinating magnetic properties. Although the ferromagnetism of 2D Cr5Te8 has been reported, the study of its magnetic domain is still blank. Herein, we successfully fabricated 2D Cr5Te8 nanosheets with controlled thickness and lateral size by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Then magnetic property measurement system suggested Cr5Te8 nanosheets possessing intense out-of-plane ferromagnetism with the Curie temperature of 179 K. Most importantly, we found magnetic bubbles and thickness-dependent maze-like magnetic domains by cryogenic magnetic force microscopy (MFM) for the first time. The domain width of the maze-like magnetic domains increases rapidly with decreasing sample thickness, while domain contrast decreases. This indicates dipolar interaction is the dominant role over exchange interaction and magnetic anisotropy. Our work not only paves a way for the controllable growth of 2D magnetic materials, but also suggests new directions for controlling magnetic phases and systematically adjusting domain properties.

Converge to the Truth: Factual Error Correction via Iterative Constrained Editing

Given a possibly false claim sentence, how can we automatically correct it with minimal editing? Existing methods either require a large number of pairs of false and corrected claims for supervised training or do not handle well errors spanning over multiple tokens within an utterance. In this paper, we propose VENCE, a novel method for factual error correction (FEC) with minimal edits. VENCE formulates the FEC problem as iterative sampling editing actions with respect to a target density function. We carefully design the target function with predicted truthfulness scores from an offline trained fact verification model. VENCE samples the most probable editing positions based on back-calculated gradients of the truthfulness score concerning input tokens and the editing actions using a distantly-supervised language model (T5). Experiments on a public dataset show that VENCE improves the well-adopted SARI metric by 5.3 (or a relative improvement of 11.8%) over the previous best distantly-supervised methods.

Electronic Janus lattice and kagome-like bands in coloring-triangular MoTe2 monolayers

Polymorphic structures of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) host exotic electronic states, like charge density wave and superconductivity. However, the number of these structures is limited by crystal symmetries, which poses a challenge to achieve tailored lattices and properties both theoretically and experimentally. Here, we report a coloring-triangle (CT) latticed MoTe2 monolayer, termed CT-MoTe2, constructed by controllably introducing uniform and ordered mirror-twin-boundaries into a pristine monolayer in molecular beam epitaxy. Low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS) together with theoretical calculations reveal that the monolayer has an electronic Janus lattice, i.e., an energy-dependent atomic-lattice and a pseudo-Te sublattice, and shares the identical geometry with the Mo5Te8 layer. Dirac-like and flat electronic bands inherently existing in the CT lattice are identified by two broad and two prominent peaks in STS spectra, respectively, and verified with density-functional-theory calculations. Two types of intrinsic domain boundaries were observed, in one of which the electronic-Janus-lattice feature maintains, implying potential applications as an energy-tunable electron-tunneling barrier in future functional devices.

POSTER++: A simpler and stronger facial expression recognition network

Facial expression recognition (FER) plays an important role in a variety of real-world applications such as human-computer interaction. POSTER achieves the state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance in FER by effectively combining facial landmark and image features through two-stream pyramid cross-fusion design. However, the architecture of POSTER is undoubtedly complex. It causes expensive computational costs. In order to relieve the computational pressure of POSTER, in this paper, we propose POSTER++. It improves POSTER in three directions: cross-fusion, two-stream, and multi-scale feature extraction. In cross-fusion, we use window-based cross-attention mechanism replacing vanilla cross-attention mechanism. We remove the image-to-landmark branch in the two-stream design. For multi-scale feature extraction, POSTER++ combines images with landmark's multi-scale features to replace POSTER's pyramid design. Extensive experiments on several standard datasets show that our POSTER++ achieves the SOTA FER performance with the minimum computational cost. For example, POSTER++ reached 92.21% on RAF-DB, 67.49% on AffectNet (7 cls) and 63.77% on AffectNet (8 cls), respectively, using only 8.4G floating point operations (FLOPs) and 43.7M parameters (Param). This demonstrates the effectiveness of our improvements.

Bumblebee black holes in light of Event Horizon Telescope observations

We report the existence of novel static spherical black-hole solutions in a vector-tensor gravitational theory called the bumblebee gravity model which extends the Einstein-Maxwell theory by allowing the vector to nonminimally couple to the Ricci curvature tensor. A test of the solutions in the strong-field regime is performed for the first time using the recent observations of the supermassive black-hole shadows in the galaxy M87 and the Milky Way from the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration. The parameter space is found largely unexcluded and more experiments are needed to fully bound the theory.

Probing vector hair of black holes with extreme mass ratio inspirals

The bumblebee gravity model, with a vector field nonminimally coupled to gravity, is a natural extension of the Einstein-Maxwell theory. In this theory, a black hole can carry a vector hair, making the metric deviate from the Schwarzschild metric. To investigate the detectability of the vector hair, we consider an Extreme Mass Ratio Inspiral (EMRI) system, where a stellar-mass black hole inspiraling into a supermassive black hole. We find that, with a one-year observation of an EMRI by a space-based gravitational-wave detector, we can probe the vector charge as small as $Q\sim 10^{-3}$ in the bumblebee gravity model, which is about three orders of magnitude tighter comparing to current EHT observations.

A Four-Parameter Black-Hole Solution in the Bumblebee Gravity Model

The bumblebee gravity model includes a class of vector-tensor theories of gravitation where the vector field couples to the Ricci tensor quadratically. We obtain an analytical spherical black-hole solution in this model. The solution has four parameters, expanding the two-parameter solution family known in the literature. Special choices of the parameters are pointed out and discussed.

Emergent Electronic Kagome Lattice in Correlated Charge-Density-Wave State of 1T-TaS$_2$

Quantum materials with tunable correlated and/or topological electronic states, such as the electronic Kagome lattice, provide an ideal platform to study the exotic quantum properties. However, the real-space investigations on the correlated electronic Kagome lattice have been rarely reported. Herein, we report on the electronic Kagome lattice emerging in the correlated charge-density-wave (CDW) state of 1T-TaS$_2$ at ~200 K via variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (VT-STM). This emergent Kagome lattice can be considered a fractional electron-filling superstructure with reduced translational and rotational symmetries, confirmed by STM measurements and density functional theory simulations. The characteristic band structure and density of states of this electronic Kagome lattice are further explored based on theoretical calculations. Our results demonstrate a self-organized electronic Kagome lattice from the correlated CDW state via the effective tuning parameter of temperature and provide a platform to directly explore the interplay of correlated electrons and topological physics.

More comprehensive facial inversion for more effective expression recognition

Facial expression recognition (FER) plays a significant role in the ubiquitous application of computer vision. We revisit this problem with a new perspective on whether it can acquire useful representations that improve FER performance in the image generation process, and propose a novel generative method based on the image inversion mechanism for the FER task, termed Inversion FER (IFER). Particularly, we devise a novel Adversarial Style Inversion Transformer (ASIT) towards IFER to comprehensively extract features of generated facial images. In addition, ASIT is equipped with an image inversion discriminator that measures the cosine similarity of semantic features between source and generated images, constrained by a distribution alignment loss. Finally, we introduce a feature modulation module to fuse the structural code and latent codes from ASIT for the subsequent FER work. We extensively evaluate ASIT on facial datasets such as FFHQ and CelebA-HQ, showing that our approach achieves state-of-the-art facial inversion performance. IFER also achieves competitive results in facial expression recognition datasets such as RAF-DB, SFEW and AffectNet. The code and models are available at https://github.com/Talented-Q/IFER-master.

Static spherical vacuum solutions in the bumblebee gravity model

The bumblebee gravity model is a vector-tensor theory of gravitation where the vector field nonminimally couples to the Ricci tensor. By investigating the vacuum field equations with spherical symmetry, we find two families of black-hole (BH) solutions in this model: one has a vanishing radial component of the vector field and the other has a vanishing radial component of the Ricci tensor. When the coupling between the vector field and the Ricci tensor is set to zero, the first family becomes the Reissner-Nordström solution while the second family degenerates to the Schwarzschild solution with the vector field being zero. General numerical solutions in both families are obtained for nonzero coupling between the vector field and the Ricci tensor. Besides BH solutions, we also reveal the existence of solutions that have a nonvanishing $tt$-component of the metric on the supposed event horizon where the $rr$-component of the metric diverges while the curvature scalars are finite. These solutions are not supported by existing observations but present certain properties that are of academic interests. We conclude the study by putting the BH solutions into tests against the Solar-system observations and the images of supermassive BHs.

SurfaceVoronoi: Efficiently Computing Voronoi Diagrams over Mesh Surfaces with Arbitrary Distance Solvers

In this paper, we propose to compute Voronoi diagrams over mesh surfaces driven by an arbitrary geodesic distance solver, assuming that the input is a triangle mesh as well as a collection of sites $P=\{p_i\}_{i=1}^m$ on the surface. We propose two key techniques to solve this problem. First, as the partition is determined by minimizing the $m$ distance fields, each of which rooted at a source site, we suggest keeping one or more distance triples, for each triangle, that may help determine the Voronoi bisectors when one uses a mark-and-sweep geodesic algorithm to predict the multi-source distance field. Second, rather than keep the distance itself at a mesh vertex, we use the squared distance to characterize the linear change of distance field restricted in a triangle, which is proved to induce an exact VD when the base surface reduces to a planar triangle mesh. Specially, our algorithm also supports the Euclidean distance, which can handle thin-sheet models (e.g. leaf) and runs faster than the traditional restricted Voronoi diagram~(RVD) algorithm. It is very extensible to deal with various variants of surface-based Voronoi diagrams including (1)surface-based power diagram, (2)constrained Voronoi diagram with curve-type breaklines, and (3)curve-type generators. We conduct extensive experimental results to validate the ability to approximate the exact VD in different distance-driven scenarios.

RFEPS: Reconstructing Feature-line Equipped Polygonal Surface

Feature lines are important geometric cues in characterizing the structure of a CAD model. Despite great progress in both explicit reconstruction and implicit reconstruction, it remains a challenging task to reconstruct a polygonal surface equipped with feature lines, especially when the input point cloud is noisy and lacks faithful normal vectors. In this paper, we develop a multistage algorithm, named RFEPS, to address this challenge. The key steps include (1)denoising the point cloud based on the assumption of local planarity, (2)identifying the feature-line zone by optimization of discrete optimal transport, (3)augmenting the point set so that sufficiently many additional points are generated on potential geometry edges, and (4) generating a polygonal surface that interpolates the augmented point set based on restricted power diagram. We demonstrate through extensive experiments that RFEPS, benefiting from the edge-point augmentation and the feature-preserving explicit reconstruction, outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of the reconstruction quality, especially in terms of the ability to reconstruct missing feature lines.

Polarizations of Gravitational Waves in the Bumblebee Gravity Model

Lorentz violation modifies the dispersion relation of gravitational waves (GWs), and induces birefringence and anisotropy in propagation. Our study shows that Lorentz violation can also activate multiple polarizations of GWs. We use the gauge invariants to investigate the polarizations of GWs in the bumblebee gravity model, and obtain the following results. (i) For a vector background $b^μ$ with only a nonzero temporal component $b^t$, there are five independent propagating degrees of freedom (DOFs), which is simlar to the Einstein-aether theory. (ii) The presence of a spatial component in the background defines a preferred spatial direction which breaks rotational symmetry. We denote $\hat{\bf b}$ as the direction of the spatial part of the background and $b_s$ as its length. If GWs propagate along $\hat{\bf b}$, the polarization content is similar to the purely timelike case. (iii) If the propagation direction of GWs is separated by an angle $β$ to $\hat{\bf b}$, and $β=\arccos(b^t/b_s)$, there are only two tensor polarizations. (iv) If $β\neq \arccos(b^t/b_s)$, there are only two independent DOFs, and the vector and scalar modes degenerate with the tensor modes. The tensor perturbations can activate a mixture of all six polarizations simultaneously. Finally, we point out the difference in GWs between the bumblebee gravity model and the minimal Standard-Model Extension framework in the linearized regime. Current observations have placed stringent constraints on the anisotropy induced by the background, while our theoretical study still reveals some novel phenomena and provides more understanding about the interaction between the Lorentz-violating vector field and gravity.
