Roth-type Theorem for high-power system in Piatetski-Shapiro primes (II)

We consider the nonlinear system $c_1p_1^d +c_2p_2^d + \dots + c_s p_s^d = 0$ with $c_1, c_2,\dots, c_s\in\mathbb Z$ being nonzero and satisfying $c_1 +c_2 + \dots + c_s = 0$. We show that for $s\ge 2\lfloor \frac{d^2}2\rfloor+1$ and $c\in\left(1, 1+c(d,s)\right)$, if the system has only $K$-trivial solutions in subset $\mathcal{A}$ of Piatetski-Shapiro primes up to $x$ and corresponding to $c$, then $|\mathcal{A}| \ll \frac{x^{\frac1c}}{\log x} $$\left(\log \log \log \log x\right)^{\frac{2-s}{dc}+\varepsilon}$.

Line defects in nematic liquid crystals as charged superelastic rods with negative twist--stretch coupling

Topological defects are a ubiquitous phenomenon in diverse physical systems. In nematic liquid crystals (LCs), they are dynamic, physicochemically distinct, sensitive to stimuli, and are thereby promising for a range of applications. However, our current understanding of the mechanics and dynamics of defects in nematic LCs remain limited and are often overwhelmed by the intricate details of the specific systems. Here, we unify singular and nonsingular line defects as superelastic rods and combine theory, simulation, and experiment to quantitatively measure their effective elastic moduli, including line tension, torsional rigidity, and twist--stretch coefficient. Interestingly, we found that line defects exhibit a negative twist--stretch coupling, meaning that twisted line defects tend to unwind under stretching, which is reminiscent of DNA molecules. A patterned nematic cell experiment further confirmed the above findings. Taken together, we have established an effective elasticity theory for nematic defects, paving the way towards understanding and engineering their deformation and transformation in driven and active nematic materials.

LGD-GCN: Local and Global Disentangled Graph Convolutional Networks

Disentangled Graph Convolutional Network (DisenGCN) is an encouraging framework to disentangle the latent factors arising in a real-world graph. However, it relies on disentangling information heavily from a local range (i.e., a node and its 1-hop neighbors), while the local information in many cases can be uneven and incomplete, hindering the interpretabiliy power and model performance of DisenGCN. In this paper\footnote{This paper is a lighter version of \href{https://jingweio.github.io/assets/pdf/tnnls22.pdf}{"Learning Disentangled Graph Convolutional Networks Locally and Globally"} where the results and analysis have been reworked substantially. Digital Object Identifier \url{https://doi.org/10.1109/TNNLS.2022.3195336}.}, we introduce a novel Local and Global Disentangled Graph Convolutional Network (LGD-GCN) to capture both local and global information for graph disentanglement. LGD-GCN performs a statistical mixture modeling to derive a factor-aware latent continuous space, and then constructs different structures w.r.t. different factors from the revealed space. In this way, the global factor-specific information can be efficiently and selectively encoded via a message passing along these built structures, strengthening the intra-factor consistency. We also propose a novel diversity promoting regularizer employed with the latent space modeling, to encourage inter-factor diversity. Evaluations of the proposed LGD-GCN on the synthetic and real-world datasets show a better interpretability and improved performance in node classification over the existing competitive models. An Anchor Learning Approach for Citation Field Learning

Citation field learning is to segment a citation string into fields of interest such as author, title, and venue. Extracting such fields from citations is crucial for citation indexing, researcher profile analysis, etc. User-generated resources like academic homepages and Curriculum Vitae, provide rich citation field information. However, extracting fields from these resources is challenging due to inconsistent citation styles, incomplete sentence syntax, and insufficient training data. To address these challenges, we propose a novel algorithm, CIFAL (citation field learning by anchor learning), to boost the citation field learning performance. CIFAL leverages the anchor learning, which is model-agnostic for any Pre-trained Language Model, to help capture citation patterns from the data of different citation styles. The experiments demonstrate that CIFAL outperforms state-of-the-art methods in citation field learning, achieving a 2.68% improvement in field-level F1-scores. Extensive analysis of the results further confirms the effectiveness of CIFAL quantitatively and qualitatively.

Energy Beamforming for RF Wireless Power Transfer with Dynamic Metasurface Antennas

Radio frequency (RF) wireless power transfer (WPT) is a promising technology for charging the Internet of Things. Practical RF-WPT systems usually require energy beamforming (EB), which can compensate for the severe propagation loss by directing beams toward the devices. The EB flexibility depends on the transmitter architecture, existing a trade-off between cost/complexity and degrees of freedom. Thus, simpler architectures such as dynamic metasurface antennas (DMAs) are gaining attention. Herein, we consider an RF-WPT system with a transmit DMA for meeting the energy harvesting requirements of multiple devices and formulate an optimization problem for the minimum-power design. First, we provide a mathematical model to capture the frequency-dependant signal propagation effect in the DMA architecture. Next, we propose a solution based on semi-definite programming and alternating optimization. Results show that a DMA-based structure can outperform a fully-digital implementation and that the required transmit power decreases with the antenna array size, while it increases and remains almost constant with frequency in DMA and FD, respectively.

Channel Estimation for Movable Antenna Communication Systems: A Framework Based on Compressed Sensing

Movable antenna (MA) is a new technology with great potential to improve communication performance by enabling local movement of antennas for pursuing better channel conditions. In particular, the acquisition of complete channel state information (CSI) between the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) regions is an essential problem for MA systems to reap performance gains. In this paper, we propose a general channel estimation framework for MA systems by exploiting the multi-path field response channel structure. Specifically, the angles of departure (AoDs), angles of arrival (AoAs), and complex coefficients of the multi-path components (MPCs) are jointly estimated by employing the compressed sensing method, based on multiple channel measurements at designated positions of the Tx-MA and Rx-MA. Under this framework, the Tx-MA and Rx-MA measurement positions fundamentally determine the measurement matrix for compressed sensing, of which the mutual coherence is analyzed from the perspective of Fourier transform. Moreover, two criteria for MA measurement positions are provided to guarantee the successful recovery of MPCs. Then, we propose several MA measurement position setups and compare their performance. Finally, comprehensive simulation results show that the proposed framework is able to estimate the complete CSI between the Tx and Rx regions with a high accuracy.

Pressure-tuned superconductivity in the Dirac semimetal PdTe

We report an unusual evolution of superconductivity (SC) in the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal PdTe with increasing pressure up to $\sim$50 GPa. The compressed PdTe exhibits a sudden reversal in the superconducting transition temperature $T\mathrm{_c}$, from an initial decrease with pressure to an increase above a critical pressure $P\mathrm{_c} \approx$ 15 GPa, showing a V-shaped feature composed of SC-I and SC-II phases due to a structural phase transition through $P\mathrm{_c}$. Subsequently, the $T\mathrm{_c}$ goes into a plateau around 2.5 K when the pressure is higher than $\sim$32 GPa. In addition, we find the variations of carrier concentrations and mobilities also manifest a similar trend on the pressure response as the $T\mathrm{_c}$, and the normal-state electronic properties change from the electron-dominated single-band model to two-carrier model after the structural phase transition, implying the close correlation between electronic properties and two SC phases. Our findings establish the SC of PdTe is highly tunable under varying pressures.

Debiasing Sequential Recommenders through Distributionally Robust Optimization over System Exposure

Sequential recommendation (SR) models are typically trained on user-item interactions which are affected by the system exposure bias, leading to the user preference learned from the biased SR model not being fully consistent with the true user preference. Exposure bias refers to the fact that user interactions are dependent upon the partial items exposed to the user. Existing debiasing methods do not make full use of the system exposure data and suffer from sub-optimal recommendation performance and high variance. In this paper, we propose to debias sequential recommenders through Distributionally Robust Optimization (DRO) over system exposure data. The key idea is to utilize DRO to optimize the worst-case error over an uncertainty set to safeguard the model against distributional discrepancy caused by the exposure bias. The main challenge to apply DRO for exposure debiasing in SR lies in how to construct the uncertainty set and avoid the overestimation of user preference on biased samples. Moreover, how to evaluate the debiasing effect on biased test set is also an open question. To this end, we first introduce an exposure simulator trained upon the system exposure data to calculate the exposure distribution, which is then regarded as the nominal distribution to construct the uncertainty set of DRO. Then, we introduce a penalty to items with high exposure probability to avoid the overestimation of user preference for biased samples. Finally, we design a debiased self-normalized inverse propensity score (SNIPS) evaluator for evaluating the debiasing effect on the biased offline test set. We conduct extensive experiments on two real-world datasets to verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Experimental results demonstrate the superior exposure debiasing performance of proposed methods. Codes and data are available at \url{https://github.com/nancheng58/DebiasedSR_DRO}.

Towards Open-World Recommendation with Knowledge Augmentation from Large Language Models

Recommender systems play a vital role in various online services. However, the insulated nature of training and deploying separately within a specific domain limits their access to open-world knowledge. Recently, the emergence of large language models (LLMs) has shown promise in bridging this gap by encoding extensive world knowledge and demonstrating reasoning capability. Nevertheless, previous attempts to directly use LLMs as recommenders have not achieved satisfactory results. In this work, we propose an Open-World Knowledge Augmented Recommendation Framework with Large Language Models, dubbed KAR, to acquire two types of external knowledge from LLMs -- the reasoning knowledge on user preferences and the factual knowledge on items. We introduce factorization prompting to elicit accurate reasoning on user preferences. The generated reasoning and factual knowledge are effectively transformed and condensed into augmented vectors by a hybrid-expert adaptor in order to be compatible with the recommendation task. The obtained vectors can then be directly used to enhance the performance of any recommendation model. We also ensure efficient inference by preprocessing and prestoring the knowledge from the LLM. Extensive experiments show that KAR significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines and is compatible with a wide range of recommendation algorithms. We deploy KAR to Huawei's news and music recommendation platforms and gain a 7\% and 1.7\% improvement in the online A/B test, respectively.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Aided Electromagnetic Stealth Against Radar Detection

While traditional electromagnetic stealth materials/metasurfaces can render a target virtually invisible to some extent, they lack flexibility and adaptability, and can only operate within a limited frequency and angle/direction range, making it challenging to ensure the expected stealth performance. In view of this, we propose in this paper a new intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided electromagnetic stealth system mounted on targets to evade radar detection, by utilizing the tunable passive reflecting elements of IRS to achieve flexible and adaptive electromagnetic stealth in a cost-effective manner. Specifically, we optimize the IRS's reflection at the target to minimize the sum received signal power of all adversary radars. We first address the IRS's reflection optimization problem using the Lagrange multiplier method and derive a semi-closed-form optimal solution for the single-radar setup, which is then generalized to the multi-radar case. To meet real-time processing requirements, we further propose low-complexity closed-form solutions based on the reverse alignment/cancellation and minimum mean-square error (MMSE) criteria for the single-radar and multi-radar cases, respectively. Additionally, we propose practical low-complexity estimation schemes at the target to acquire angle-of-arrival (AoA) and/or path gain information via a small number of receive sensing devices. Simulation results validate the performance advantages of our proposed IRS-aided electromagnetic stealth system with the proposed IRS reflection designs.

ANPL: Towards Natural Programming with Interactive Decomposition

Though LLMs are capable of generating plausible programs, it's challenging to interact with the LLMs further to revise the program, especially if the user's specific requirements are different from the initial proposal. In this paper, we introduce ANPL, an interactive programming system that ensures users can always refine the generated code towards their specific programmatic intents via structured decompositions. Borrowing the paradigm of sketching from program synthesis, an ANPL program consists of a set of input-outputs that it must satisfy, a ``sketch'' -- control/data flow expressed in precise code (e.g. Python), and ``holes'' -- sub-modules to be implemented by the LLM specified with natural language. The user revises an ANPL program by either modifying the sketch, changing the language used to describe the holes, or providing additional input-outputs to a particular hole, turning it into a sub-ANPL program that can be solved recursively. This workflow allows the users to offload programming burdens to the LLM as much as possible while retaining the ability to pinpoint and resolve bugs locally, without exposing the rest of the program to the LLM. We deploy ANPL on the Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus (ARC), a set of unique tasks that are challenging for state-of-the-art AI systems, showing it outperforms baseline programming systems that (a) without the ability to decompose tasks interactively and (b) without the guarantee that the modules can be correctly composed together. Additional evaluations on APPS, HumanEval, and real-world programming tasks have validated that the ANPL framework is applicable to multiple programming domains. We release the ANPL solutions to the ARC tasks as a dataset, providing insights into how humans decompose novel tasks programmatically. See our code at https://iprc-dip.github.io/ANPL/.

Hypersonic wave wall flow based on gas kinetic method

The transition of hypersonic boundary layer can lead to a several-fold increase in surface heat flux and skin friction for the aircraft, significantly impacting its flight performance. The corrugated wall, as a passive control method for boundary layer flow, also serves as a type of wall microstructure, making its study on the local rarefaction effect of considerable engineering significance. In this study, we employed the conservative discrete unified gas dynamic scheme and utilized a domain-wide numerical simulation method. Initially, we simulated the hypersonic flat plate flow with different depths of corrugated walls under the conditions of incoming flow Mach number of 6 and Reynolds number of ${{10}^{7}}$. Subsequently, we investigated the effects of corrugated walls, including flat plate corrugated walls and wedge corrugated walls, under varying Reynolds numbers for an incoming flow Mach number of 6, and discussed the impact of local rarefaction effect of corrugated walls under different Reynolds numbers. By using the local Knudsen number as the criterion, we found that under these conditions, the occurrence of local rarefaction effect near the corrugated wall due to consecutive failures does not take place when the incoming Reynolds number reaches ${{10}^{7}}$ or ${{10}^{6}}$. However, when the incoming Reynolds number drops to ${{10}^{5}}$, the local rarefaction effect near the corrugated wall becomes evident, with the appearance of non-equilibrium effects in translational and rotational temperatures of molecules. This phenomenon becomes more pronounced as the Reynolds number decreases further.

Complementary and Integrative Health Lexicon (CIHLex) and Entity Recognition in the Literature

Objective: Our study aimed to construct an exhaustive Complementary and Integrative Health (CIH) Lexicon (CIHLex) to better represent the often underrepresented physical and psychological CIH approaches in standard terminologies. We also intended to apply advanced Natural Language Processing (NLP) models such as Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) and GPT-3.5 Turbo for CIH named entity recognition, evaluating their performance against established models like MetaMap and CLAMP. Materials and Methods: We constructed the CIHLex by integrating various resources, compiling and integrating data from biomedical literature and relevant knowledge bases. The Lexicon encompasses 198 unique concepts with 1090 corresponding unique terms. We matched these concepts to the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS). Additionally, we developed and utilized BERT models and compared their efficiency in CIH named entity recognition to that of other models such as MetaMap, CLAMP, and GPT3.5-turbo. Results: From the 198 unique concepts in CIHLex, 62.1% could be matched to at least one term in the UMLS. Moreover, 75.7% of the mapped UMLS Concept Unique Identifiers (CUIs) were categorized as "Therapeutic or Preventive Procedure." Among the models applied to CIH named entity recognition, BLUEBERT delivered the highest macro average F1-score of 0.90, surpassing other models. Conclusion: Our CIHLex significantly augments representation of CIH approaches in biomedical literature. Demonstrating the utility of advanced NLP models, BERT notably excelled in CIH entity recognition. These results highlight promising strategies for enhancing standardization and recognition of CIH terminology in biomedical contexts.

AutoAlign: Fully Automatic and Effective Knowledge Graph Alignment enabled by Large Language Models

The task of entity alignment between knowledge graphs (KGs) aims to identify every pair of entities from two different KGs that represent the same entity. Many machine learning-based methods have been proposed for this task. However, to our best knowledge, existing methods all require manually crafted seed alignments, which are expensive to obtain. In this paper, we propose the first fully automatic alignment method named AutoAlign, which does not require any manually crafted seed alignments. Specifically, for predicate embeddings, AutoAlign constructs a predicate-proximity-graph with the help of large language models to automatically capture the similarity between predicates across two KGs. For entity embeddings, AutoAlign first computes the entity embeddings of each KG independently using TransE, and then shifts the two KGs' entity embeddings into the same vector space by computing the similarity between entities based on their attributes. Thus, both predicate alignment and entity alignment can be done without manually crafted seed alignments. AutoAlign is not only fully automatic, but also highly effective. Experiments using real-world KGs show that AutoAlign improves the performance of entity alignment significantly compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Nematic superconductivity from selective orbital pairing in Ba(Fe1-xMx)2As2 (M = Co, Ni) single crystals

We use transport measurements to determine the in-plane anisotropy of the upper critical field Hc2 in detwinned superconducting Ba(Fe1-xMx)2As2 (M = Co, Ni) single crystals. In previous measurements on twinned single crystals, the charge carrier doping dependence (x) of the upper critical field anisotropy for fields along the inter-planar (c-axis) and in-plane field directions was found to increase in the overdoped regime. For underdoped samples, which exhibit a spin nematic phase below the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition temperature Ts , we find that Hc2 along the a-axis is considerably lower than that along the b-axis. The upper critical field anisotropy disappears in the over-doped regime when the system becomes tetragonal. By combining these results with inelastic neutron scattering studies of spin excitations, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we conclude that superconductivity in under-doped iron pnictides is orbital selective - with a dominant contribution from electrons with the dyz orbital character and being intimately associated with spin excitations.

An In-Depth Evaluation of Federated Learning on Biomedical Natural Language Processing

Language models (LMs) such as BERT and GPT have revolutionized natural language processing (NLP). However, the medical field faces challenges in training LMs due to limited data access and privacy constraints imposed by regulations like the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Federated learning (FL) offers a decentralized solution that enables collaborative learning while ensuring data privacy. In this study, we evaluated FL on 2 biomedical NLP tasks encompassing 8 corpora using 6 LMs. Our results show that: 1) FL models consistently outperformed models trained on individual clients' data and sometimes performed comparably with models trained with polled data; 2) with the fixed number of total data, FL models training with more clients produced inferior performance but pre-trained transformer-based models exhibited great resilience. 3) FL models significantly outperformed large language models using zero-/one-shot learning and offered lightning inference speed.

FaMeSumm: Investigating and Improving Faithfulness of Medical Summarization

Summaries of medical text shall be faithful by being consistent and factual with source inputs, which is an important but understudied topic for safety and efficiency in healthcare. In this paper, we investigate and improve faithfulness in summarization on a broad range of medical summarization tasks. Our investigation reveals that current summarization models often produce unfaithful outputs for medical input text. We then introduce FaMeSumm, a framework to improve faithfulness by fine-tuning pre-trained language models based on medical knowledge. FaMeSumm performs contrastive learning on designed sets of faithful and unfaithful summaries, and it incorporates medical terms and their contexts to encourage faithful generation of medical terms. We conduct comprehensive experiments on three datasets in two languages: health question and radiology report summarization datasets in English, and a patient-doctor dialogue dataset in Chinese. Results demonstrate that FaMeSumm is flexible and effective by delivering consistent improvements over mainstream language models such as BART, T5, mT5, and PEGASUS, yielding state-of-the-art performances on metrics for faithfulness and general quality. Human evaluation by doctors also shows that FaMeSumm generates more faithful outputs. Our code is available at https://github.com/psunlpgroup/FaMeSumm .

Emergent Communication for Rules Reasoning

Research on emergent communication between deep-learning-based agents has received extensive attention due to its inspiration for linguistics and artificial intelligence. However, previous attempts have hovered around emerging communication under perception-oriented environmental settings, that forces agents to describe low-level perceptual features intra image or symbol contexts. In this work, inspired by the classic human reasoning test (namely Raven's Progressive Matrix), we propose the Reasoning Game, a cognition-oriented environment that encourages agents to reason and communicate high-level rules, rather than perceived low-level contexts. Moreover, we propose 1) an unbiased dataset (namely rule-RAVEN) as a benchmark to avoid overfitting, 2) and a two-stage curriculum agent training method as a baseline for more stable convergence in the Reasoning Game, where contexts and semantics are bilaterally drifting. Experimental results show that, in the Reasoning Game, a semantically stable and compositional language emerges to solve reasoning problems. The emerged language helps agents apply the extracted rules to the generalization of unseen context attributes, and to the transfer between different context attributes or even tasks.
