Enabling Panoramic Full-Angle Reflection via Aerial Intelligent Reflecting Surface

This paper proposes a new three dimensional (3D) networking architecture enabled by aerial intelligent reflecting surface (AIRS) to achieve panoramic signal reflection from the sky. Compared to the conventional terrestrial IRS, AIRS not only enjoys higher deployment flexibility, but also is able to achieve 360$^\circ$ panoramic full-angle reflection and requires fewer reflections in general due to its higher likelihood of having line of sight (LoS) links with the ground nodes. We focus on the problem to maximize the worst-case signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in a given coverage area by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming, AIRS placement and phase shifts. The formulated problem is non-convex and the optimization variables are coupled with each other in an intricate manner. To tackle this problem, we first consider the special case of single-location SNR maximization to gain useful insights, for which the optimal solution is obtained in closed-form. Then for the general case of area coverage, an efficient suboptimal solution is proposed by exploiting the similarity between phase shifts optimization for IRS and analog beamforming for the conventional phase array. Numerical results show that the proposed design can achieve significant performance gain than heuristic AIRS deployment schemes.

A New Store-then-Amplify-and-Forward Protocol for UAV Mobile Relaying

In this letter, we consider the use of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as a mobile relay to assist the communication between two ground users without a direct link. We propose a novel store-then-amplify-and-forward (SAF) relaying protocol for the UAV to exploit its mobility jointly with the low-complexity AF relaying. Specifically, the received signal from the source is first stored in a buffer at the UAV, then amplified and forwarded to the destination when the UAV flies closer to the destination. With this new SAF protocol, we aim to maximize the throughput of the UAV-enabled relaying system by jointly optimizing the source/UAV transmit power and the UAV trajectory, as well as the time-slot pairing for each data packet received and forwarded by the UAV. As this problem is a non-convex mixed integer optimization problem that is difficult to solve, we propose an efficient algorithm for obtaining a suboptimal solution for it by applying the techniques of Hungary algorithm, alternating optimization and successive convex approximation. Numerical results show that the proposed mobile SAF relaying outperforms the conventional AF relaying without signal storing.

Beamforming Optimization for Wireless Network Aided by Intelligent Reflecting Surface with Discrete Phase Shifts

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a cost-effective solution for achieving high spectrum and energy efficiency in future wireless networks by leveraging massive low-cost passive elements that are able to reflect the signals with adjustable phase shifts. Prior works on IRS mainly consider continuous phase shifts at reflecting elements, which are practically difficult to implement due to the hardware limitation. In contrast, we study in this paper an IRS-aided wireless network, where an IRS with only a finite number of phase shifts at each element is deployed to assist in the communication from a multi-antenna access point (AP) to multiple single-antenna users. We aim to minimize the transmit power at the AP by jointly optimizing the continuous transmit precoding at the AP and the discrete reflect phase shifts at the IRS, subject to a given set of minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints at the user receivers. The considered problem is shown to be a mixed-integer non-linear program (MINLP) and thus is difficult to solve in general. To tackle this problem, we first study the single-user case with one user assisted by the IRS and propose both optimal and suboptimal algorithms for solving it. Besides, we analytically show that as compared to the ideal case with continuous phase shifts, the IRS with discrete phase shifts achieves the same squared power gain in terms of asymptotically large number of reflecting elements, while a constant proportional power loss is incurred that depends only on the number of phase-shift levels. The proposed designs for the single-user case are also extended to the general setup with multiple users among which some are aided by the IRS. Simulation results verify our performance analysis as well as the effectiveness of our proposed designs as compared to various benchmark schemes.

Weighted Sum Power Maximization for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided SWIPT

The low efficiency of far-field wireless power transfer (WPT) limits the fundamental rate-energy (R-E) performance trade-off of the simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system. To address this challenge, we propose in this letter a new SWIPT system aided by the emerging intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) technology. By leveraging massive low-cost passive elements that are able to reflect the signals with adjustable phase shifts, IRS achieve a high passive beamforming gain, which is appealing for drastically enhancing the WPT efficiency and thereby the R-E trade-off of SWIPT systems. We consider an IRS being deployed to assist a multi-antenna access point (AP) to serve multiple information decoding receivers (IDRs) and energy harvesting receivers (EHRs). We aim to maximize the weighted sum-power received by EHRs via jointly optimizing the transmit precoders at the AP and reflect phase shifts at the IRS, subject to the individual signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints for IDRs. Since this problem is non-convex, we propose efficient algorithms to obtain suboptimal solutions for it. In particular, we prove that it is sufficient to send information signals only at the AP to serve both IDRs and EHRs regardless of their channel realizations. Moreover, simulation results show significant performance gains achieved by our proposed designs over benchmark schemes.

Hybrid Offline-Online Design for UAV-Enabled Data Harvesting in Probabilistic LoS Channel

This paper considers an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless sensor network (WSN) in urban areas, where a UAV is deployed to collect data from distributed sensor nodes (SNs) within a given duration. To characterize the occasional building blockage between the UAV and SNs, we construct the probabilistic line-of-sight (LoS) channel model for a Manhattan-type city by using the combined simulation and data regression method, which is shown in the form of a generalized logistic function of the UAV-SN elevation angle. We assume that only the knowledge of SNs' locations and the probabilistic LoS channel model is known a priori, while the UAV can obtain the instantaneous LoS/Non-LoS channel state information (CSI) with the SNs in real time along its flight. Our objective is to maximize the minimum (average) data collection rate from all the SNs for the UAV. To this end, we formulate a new rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the UAV three-dimensional (3D) trajectory and transmission scheduling of SNs. Although the optimal solution is intractable due to the lack of the complete UAV-SNs CSI, we propose in this paper a novel and general design method, called hybrid offline-online optimization, to obtain a suboptimal solution to it, by leveraging both the statistical and real-time CSI. Essentially, our proposed method decouples the joint design of UAV trajectory and communication scheduling into two phases: namely, an offline phase that determines the UAV path prior to its flight based on the probabilistic LoS channel model, followed by an online phase that adaptively adjusts the UAV flying speeds along the offline optimized path as well as communication scheduling based on the instantaneous UAV-SNs CSI and SNs' individual amounts of data received accumulatively.

Sculpting stable structures in pure liquids

Pure liquids in thermodynamic equilibrium are structurally homogeneous. In liquid crystals, flow and light pulses are used to create reconfigurable domains with polar order. Moreover, through careful engineering of concerted microfluidic flows and localized opto-thermal fields, it is possible to achieve complete control over the nucleation, growth, and shape of such domains. Experiments, theory, and simulations indicate that the resulting structures can be stabilized indefinitely, provided the liquids are maintained in a controlled non-equilibrium state. The resulting sculpted liquids could find applications in microfluidic devices for selective encapsulation of solutes and particles into optically active compartments that interact with external stimuli.

Asymmetric GAN for Unpaired Image-to-image Translation

Unpaired image-to-image translation problem aims to model the mapping from one domain to another with unpaired training data. Current works like the well-acknowledged Cycle GAN provide a general solution for any two domains through modeling injective mappings with a symmetric structure. While in situations where two domains are asymmetric in complexity, i.e., the amount of information between two domains is different, these approaches pose problems of poor generation quality, mapping ambiguity, and model sensitivity. To address these issues, we propose Asymmetric GAN (AsymGAN) to adapt the asymmetric domains by introducing an auxiliary variable (aux) to learn the extra information for transferring from the information-poor domain to the information-rich domain, which improves the performance of state-of-the-art approaches in the following ways. First, aux better balances the information between two domains which benefits the quality of generation. Second, the imbalance of information commonly leads to mapping ambiguity, where we are able to model one-to-many mappings by tuning aux, and furthermore, our aux is controllable. Third, the training of Cycle GAN can easily make the generator pair sensitive to small disturbances and variations while our model decouples the ill-conditioned relevance of generators by injecting aux during training. We verify the effectiveness of our proposed method both qualitatively and quantitatively on asymmetric situation, label-photo task, on Cityscapes and Helen datasets, and show many applications of asymmetric image translations. In conclusion, our AsymGAN provides a better solution for unpaired image-to-image translation in asymmetric domains.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface with Discrete Phase Shifts: Channel Estimation and Passive Beamforming

In this paper, we consider an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided single-user system where an IRS with discrete phase shifts is deployed to assist the uplink communication. A practical transmission protocol is proposed to execute channel estimation and passive beamforming successively. To minimize the mean square error (MSE) of channel estimation, we first formulate an optimization problem for designing the IRS reflection pattern in the training phase under the constraints of unit-modulus, discrete phase, and full rank. This problem, however, is NP-hard and thus difficult to solve in general. As such, we propose a low-complexity yet efficient method to solve it sub-optimally, by constructing a near-orthogonal reflection pattern based on either discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-matrix quantization or Hadamard-matrix truncation. Based on the estimated channel, we then formulate an optimization problem to maximize the achievable rate by designing the discrete-phase passive beamforming at the IRS with the training overhead and channel estimation error taken into account. To reduce the computational complexity of exhaustive search, we further propose a low-complexity successive refinement algorithm with a properly-designed initialization to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution. Numerical results are presented to show the significant rate improvement of our proposed IRS training reflection pattern and passive beamforming designs as compared to other benchmark schemes.

ICDAR 2019 Robust Reading Challenge on Reading Chinese Text on Signboard

Chinese scene text reading is one of the most challenging problems in computer vision and has attracted great interest. Different from English text, Chinese has more than 6000 commonly used characters and Chinesecharacters can be arranged in various layouts with numerous fonts. The Chinese signboards in street view are a good choice for Chinese scene text images since they have different backgrounds, fonts and layouts. We organized a competition called ICDAR2019-ReCTS, which mainly focuses on reading Chinese text on signboard. This report presents the final results of the competition. A large-scale dataset of 25,000 annotated signboard images, in which all the text lines and characters are annotated with locations and transcriptions, were released. Four tasks, namely character recognition, text line recognition, text line detection and end-to-end recognition were set up. Besides, considering the Chinese text ambiguity issue, we proposed a multi ground truth (multi-GT) evaluation method to make evaluation fairer. The competition started on March 1, 2019 and ended on April 30, 2019. 262 submissions from 46 teams are received. Most of the participants come from universities, research institutes, and tech companies in China. There are also some participants from the United States, Australia, Singapore, and Korea. 21 teams submit results for Task 1, 23 teams submit results for Task 2, 24 teams submit results for Task 3, and 13 teams submit results for Task 4. A Comprehensive Survey on Hybrid Communication for Internet of Nano-Things in Context of Body-Centric Communications

With the huge advancement of nanotechnology over the past years, the devices are shrinking into micro-scale, even nano-scale. Additionally, the Internet of nano-things (IoNTs) are generally regarded as the ultimate formation of the current sensor networks and the development of nanonetworks would be of great help to its fulfilment, which would be ubiquitous with numerous applications in all domains of life. However, the communication between the devices in such nanonetworks is still an open problem. Body-centric nanonetworks are believed to play an essential role in the practical application of IoNTs. BCNNs are also considered as domain specific like wireless sensor networks and always deployed on purpose to support a particular application. In these networks, electromagnetic and molecular communications are widely considered as two main promising paradigms and both follow their own development process. In this survey, the recent developments of these two paradigms are first illustrated in the aspects of applications, network structures, modulation techniques, coding techniques and security to then investigate the potential of hybrid communication paradigms. Meanwhile, the enabling technologies have been presented to apprehend the state-of-art with the discussion on the possibility of the hybrid technologies. Additionally, the inter-connectivity of electromagnetic and molecular body-centric nanonetworks is discussed. Afterwards, the related security issues of the proposed networks are discussed. Finally, the challenges and open research directions are presented.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Secrecy Communication: Is Artificial Noise Helpful or Not?

In this letter, we investigate whether the use of artificial noise (AN) is helpful to enhance the secrecy rate of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted wireless communication system. Specifically, an IRS is deployed nearby a single-antenna receiver to assist in the transmission from a multi-antenna transmitter, in the presence of multiple single-antenna eavesdroppers. Aiming to maximize the achievable secrecy rate, a design problem for jointly optimizing transmit beamforming with AN or jamming and IRS reflect beamforming is formulated, which is however difficult to solve due to its non-convexity and coupled variables. We thus propose an efficient algorithm based on alternating optimization to solve the problem sub-optimally. Simulation results show that incorporating AN in transmit beamforming is beneficial under the new setup with IRS reflect beamforming. In particular, it is unveiled that the IRS-aided design without AN even performs worse than the AN-aided design without IRS as the number of eavesdroppers near the IRS increases.

Radio Map Based Path Planning for Cellular-Connected UAV

In this paper, we study the path planning for a cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to minimize its flying distance from given initial to final locations, while ensuring a target link quality in terms of the large-scale channel gain with each of its associated ground base stations (GBSs) during the flight. To this end, we propose the use of radio map that provides the information on the large-scale channel gains between each GBS and uniformly sampled locations on a three-dimensional (3D) grid over the region of interest, which are assumed to be time-invariant due to the generally static and large-size obstacles therein (e.g., buildings). Based on the given radio maps of the GBSs, we first obtain the optimal UAV path by solving an equivalent shortest path problem (SPP) in graph theory. To reduce the computation complexity of the optimal solution, we further propose a grid quantization method whereby the grid points in each GBS's radio map are more coarsely sampled by exploiting the spatial channel correlation over neighboring grids. Then, we solve the approximate SPP over the reduced-size radio map (graph) more efficiently. Numerical results show that the proposed solutions can effectively minimize the flying distance of the UAV subject to its communication quality constraint. Moreover, a flexible trade-off between performance and complexity can be achieved by adjusting the quantization ratio for the radio map.

IRS-Enhanced OFDMA: Joint Resource Allocation and Passive Beamforming Optimization

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an emerging technique to enhance the wireless communication spectral efficiency with low hardware and energy cost. In this letter, we consider the integration of IRS to an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) based multiuser downlink communication system, and study the pertinent joint optimization of the IRS reflection coefficients and OFDMA time-frequency resource block as well as power allocations to maximize the users' common (minimum) rate. Specifically, due to the lack of frequency-selective passive beamforming capability at the IRS, only one set of reflection coefficients can be designed for adapting to a large number of channels of multiple users over different frequency sub-bands. To tackle this difficulty, we propose a novel dynamic passive beamforming scheme where the IRS reflection coefficients are dynamically adjusted over different time slots within each channel coherence block to create artificial time-varying channels and select only a subset of the users to be simultaneously served in each time slot, thus achieving a higher passive beamforming gain. Although the formulated optimization problem is non-convex, we propose an efficient algorithm to obtain a suboptimal solution to it. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme significantly improves the system common rate over the setup without IRS and that with random IRS reflection coefficients. Moreover, our proposed dynamic passive beamforming outperforms the fixed passive beamforming which employs a common set of reflection coefficients in each channel coherence block, by more flexibly balancing between passive beamforming and multiuser diversity gains.

Structuring Stress for Active Materials Control

Active materials are capable of converting free energy into mechanical work to produce autonomous motion, and exhibit striking collective dynamics that biology relies on for essential functions. Controlling those dynamics and transport in synthetic systems has been particularly challenging. Here, we introduce the concept of spatially structured activity as a means to control and manipulate transport in active nematic liquid crystals consisting of actin filaments and light-sensitive myosin motors. Simulations and experiments are used to demonstrate that topological defects can be generated at will, and then constrained to move along specified trajectories, by inducing local stresses in an otherwise passive material. These results provide a foundation for design of autonomous and reconfigurable microfluidic systems where transport is controlled by modulating activity with light.

Consensus Feature Network for Scene Parsing

Scene parsing is challenging as it aims to assign one of the semantic categories to each pixel in scene images. Thus, pixel-level features are desired for scene parsing. However, classification networks are dominated by the discriminative portion, so directly applying classification networks to scene parsing will result in inconsistent parsing predictions within one instance and among instances of the same category. To address this problem, we propose two transform units to learn pixel-level consensus features. One is an Instance Consensus Transform (ICT) unit to learn the instance-level consensus features by aggregating features within the same instance. The other is a Category Consensus Transform (CCT) unit to pursue category-level consensus features through keeping the consensus of features among instances of the same category in scene images. The proposed ICT and CCT units are lightweight, data-driven and end-to-end trainable. The features learned by the two units are more coherent in both instance-level and category-level. Furthermore, we present the Consensus Feature Network (CFNet) based on the proposed ICT and CCT units, and demonstrate the effectiveness of each component in our method by performing extensive ablation experiments. Finally, our proposed CFNet achieves competitive performance on four datasets, including Cityscapes, Pascal Context, CamVid, and COCO Stuff.

Angular-Domain Selective Channel Tracking and Doppler Compensation for High-Mobility mmWave Massive MIMO

In this paper, we consider a mmWave massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system with one static base station (BS) serving a fast-moving user, both equipped with a very large array. The transmitted signal arrives at the user through multiple paths, each with a different angle of-arrival and hence Doppler frequency offset, thus resulting in a fast time-varying multipath fading MIMO channel. In order to mitigate the Doppler-induced channel aging for reduced pilot overhead, we propose a new angular-domain selective channel tracking and Doppler compensation scheme at the user side. We formulate the joint estimation of partial angular-domain channel and DFO parameters as a dynamic compressive sensing problem. Then we propose a Doppler-aware-dynamic variational Bayesian inference (DD-VBI) algorithm to solve this problem efficiently. Finally, we propose a practical DFO compensation scheme which selects the dominant paths of the fast time-varying channel for DFO compensation and thereby converts it into a slow time-varying effective channel. Compared with the existing methods, the proposed scheme can enjoy the huge array gain provided by the massive MIMO and also balance the tradeoff between the CSI signaling overhead and spatial multiplexing gain. Simulation results verify the advantages of the proposed scheme over various baseline schemes.

Photonic realization of quantum resetting

Contrary to the usual assumption of at least partial control of quantum dynamics, a surprising recent result proved that an arbitrary quantum state can be probabilistically reset to a state in the past by having it interact with probing systems in a consistent, but $uncontrolled$ way. We present a photonic implementation to achieve this resetting process, experimentally verifying that a state can be probabilistically reset to its past with a fidelity of $0.870\pm0.012$. We further demonstrate the preservation of an entangled state, which still violates a Bell inequality, after half of the entangled pair was reset. The ability to reset uncontrolled quantum states has implications in the foundations of quantum physics and applications in areas of quantum technology.

Cooperative Downlink Interference Transmission and Cancellation for Cellular-Connected UAV: A Divide-and-Conquer Approach

The line-of-sight dominant air-ground channels have posed critical interference issues in cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications. In this paper, we propose a new base station (BS) cooperative beamforming (CB) technique for the cellular downlink to mitigate the strong interference caused by the co-channel terrestrial transmissions to the UAV. Besides the conventional CB by cooperatively transmitting the UAV's message, the serving BSs of the UAVs exploit a novel interference transmission scheme to effectively suppress the terrestrial interference to the UAV. Specifically, the co-channel terrestrial users' messages are shared with the UAV's serving BSs and transmitted via CB to cancel their resultant interference at the UAV. To balance between the CB gains for UAV signal enhancement and interference cancellation, we aim to maximize the UAV's receive signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio by jointly optimizing the power allocations at all of its serving BSs for transmitting the UAV's and co-channel terrestrial users' messages. First, we derive the closed-form optimal solution to this problem in a special case and draw useful insights. Then, we propose an algorithm to solve the problem optimally in the general case. As the optimal solution requires centralized implementation with exorbitant message/channel information exchanges among the BSs, we further propose a distributed algorithm that is amenable to practical implementation, based on a new divide-and-conquer approach, whereby each co-channel BS divides its perceived interference to the UAV into multiple portions, each to be canceled by a different serving BS of the UAV with its best effort. Numerical results show that the proposed centralized and distributed CB schemes with interference transmission and cancellation (ITC) can both significantly outperform the conventional CB without applying ITC.
