Engineering Radio Map for Wireless Resource Management

Radio map in general refers to the geographical signal power spectrum density, formed by the superposition of concurrent wireless transmissions, as a function of location, frequency and time. It contains rich and useful information regarding the spectral activities and propagation channels in wireless networks. Such information can be leveraged to not only improve the performance of existing wireless services (e.g., via proactive resource provisioning) but also enable new applications, such as wireless spectrum surveillance. However, practical implementation of radio maps in wireless communication is often difficult due to the heterogeneity of modern wireless networks and the sheer amount of wireless data to be collected, stored, and processed. In this article, we provide an overview on the state-of-the-art techniques for constructing radio maps as well as applying them to achieve efficient and secure resource management in wireless networks. Some key research challenges are highlighted to motivate future investigation.

Tree-structured Kronecker Convolutional Network for Semantic Segmentation

Most existing semantic segmentation methods employ atrous convolution to enlarge the receptive field of filters, but neglect partial information. To tackle this issue, we firstly propose a novel Kronecker convolution which adopts Kronecker product to expand the standard convolutional kernel for taking into account the partial feature neglected by atrous convolutions. Therefore, it can capture partial information and enlarge the receptive field of filters simultaneously without introducing extra parameters. Secondly, we propose Tree-structured Feature Aggregation (TFA) module which follows a recursive rule to expand and forms a hierarchical structure. Thus, it can naturally learn representations of multi-scale objects and encode hierarchical contextual information in complex scenes. Finally, we design Tree-structured Kronecker Convolutional Networks (TKCN) which employs Kronecker convolution and TFA module. Extensive experiments on three datasets, PASCAL VOC 2012, PASCAL-Context and Cityscapes, verify the effectiveness of our proposed approach. We make the code and the trained model publicly available at https://github.com/wutianyiRosun/TKCN.

Adaptive Deployment for UAV-Aided Communication Networks

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as an aerial base station is a promising technology to rapidly provide wireless connectivity to ground users. Given UAV's agility and mobility, a key question is how to adapt UAV deployment to best cater to the instantaneous wireless traffic in a territory. In this paper, we propose an adaptive deployment scheme for a UAV-aided communication network, where the UAV adapts its displacement direction and distance to serve randomly moving users' instantaneous traffic in the target cell. In our adaptive scheme, the UAV does not need to learn users' exact locations in real time, but chooses its displacement direction based on a simple majority rule by flying to the spatial sector with the greatest number of users in the cell. To balance the service qualities of the users in different sectors, we further optimize the UAV's displacement distance in the chosen sector to maximize the average throughput and the successful transmission probability, respectively. We prove that the optimal displacement distance for average throughput maximization decreases with the user density: the UAV moves to the center of the chosen sector when the user density is small and the UAV displacement becomes mild when the user density is large. In contrast, the optimal displacement distance for success probability maximization does not necessarily decrease with the user density and further depends on the target signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) threshold. Extensive simulations show that the proposed adaptive deployment scheme outperforms the traditional non-adaptive scheme, especially when the user density is not large.

Style Separation and Synthesis via Generative Adversarial Networks

Style synthesis attracts great interests recently, while few works focus on its dual problem "style separation". In this paper, we propose the Style Separation and Synthesis Generative Adversarial Network (S3-GAN) to simultaneously implement style separation and style synthesis on object photographs of specific categories. Based on the assumption that the object photographs lie on a manifold, and the contents and styles are independent, we employ S3-GAN to build mappings between the manifold and a latent vector space for separating and synthesizing the contents and styles. The S3-GAN consists of an encoder network, a generator network, and an adversarial network. The encoder network performs style separation by mapping an object photograph to a latent vector. Two halves of the latent vector represent the content and style, respectively. The generator network performs style synthesis by taking a concatenated vector as input. The concatenated vector contains the style half vector of the style target image and the content half vector of the content target image. Once obtaining the images from the generator network, an adversarial network is imposed to generate more photo-realistic images. Experiments on CelebA and UT Zappos 50K datasets demonstrate that the S3-GAN has the capacity of style separation and synthesis simultaneously, and could capture various styles in a single model.

Symbiotic Radio: A New Communication Paradigm for Passive Internet-of-Things

In this paper, a novel technique, called symbiotic radio (SR), is proposed for passive Internet-of-Things (IoT), in which a backscatter device (BD) is integrated with a primary transmission. The primary transmitter is designed to assist the primary and BD transmissions, and the primary receiver decodes the information from the primary transmitter as well as the BD. We consider a multiple-input single-output (MISO) SR and the symbol period for BD transmission is designed to be either the same as or much longer than that of the primary system, resulting in parasitic or commensal relationship between the primary and BD transmissions. We first derive the achievable rates for the primary system and the BD transmission. Then, we formulate two transmit beamforming optimization problems, i.e., the weighted sum-rate maximization problem and the transmit power minimization problem, and solve these non-convex problems by applying semi-definite relaxation technique. In addition, a novel transmit beamforming structure is proposed to reduce the computational complexity of the solutions. Simulation results show that when the BD transmission rate is properly designed, the proposed SR not only enables the opportunistic transmission for the BD via energy-efficient passive backscattering, but also enhances the achievable rate of the primary system by properly exploiting the additional signal path from the BD.

Beamforming Optimization for Intelligent Reflecting Surface with Discrete Phase Shifts

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising technology for achieving high spectrum efficiency in future wireless networks by leveraging massive low-cost reflecting elements with each reflecting the incident signal with a proper phase shift. However, prior works on IRS are mainly based on the optimization of infinite-resolution phase shifters which are practically infeasible due to hardware imperfections. In contrast, we study in this paper an IRS-aided wireless network, where an IRS with only finite-resolution phase shifter available at each element is deployed to assist in the communication from a multi-antenna access point (AP) to a single-antenna user. We aim to minimize the transmit power at the AP by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming at the AP and reflect beamforming at the IRS, subject to the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) constraint and practical discrete phase shift constraints. We first propose a suboptimal but low-complexity algorithm by exploiting the alternating optimization technique. Then, we reveal that as in the case with continuous phase shifts, the IRS with discrete phase shifts also achieves the squared power gain for asymptotically large number of reflecting elements, despite suffering a performance loss that depends only on the resolution of phase shifters.

SyntaxSQLNet: Syntax Tree Networks for Complex and Cross-DomainText-to-SQL Task

Most existing studies in text-to-SQL tasks do not require generating complex SQL queries with multiple clauses or sub-queries, and generalizing to new, unseen databases. In this paper we propose SyntaxSQLNet, a syntax tree network to address the complex and cross-domain text-to-SQL generation task. SyntaxSQLNet employs a SQL specific syntax tree-based decoder with SQL generation path history and table-aware column attention encoders. We evaluate SyntaxSQLNet on the Spider text-to-SQL task, which contains databases with multiple tables and complex SQL queries with multiple SQL clauses and nested queries. We use a database split setting where databases in the test set are unseen during training. Experimental results show that SyntaxSQLNet can handle a significantly greater number of complex SQL examples than prior work, outperforming the previous state-of-the-art model by 7.3% in exact matching accuracy. We also show that SyntaxSQLNet can further improve the performance by an additional 7.5% using a cross-domain augmentation method, resulting in a 14.8% improvement in total. To our knowledge, we are the first to study this complex and cross-domain text-to-SQL task.

Exploiting NOMA for Multi-Beam UAV Communication in Cellular Uplink

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are expected to be an important new class of users in the fifth generation (5G) and beyond 5G cellular networks. In particular, there are emerging UAV applications such as aerial photograph and data relaying that require high-speed communications between the UAVs and the ground base stations (GBSs). Due to the high UAV altitude, the strong line-of-sight (LoS) links generally dominate the channels between the UAVs and GBSs, which brings both opportunities and challenges in the design of future wireless networks supporting both terrestrial and aerial users. Although each UAV can associate with more GBSs for communication as compared to terrestrial users thanks to the LoS-dominant channels, it also causes/suffers more severe interference to/from the terrestrial communications in the uplink/downlink. This paper studies the uplink communication from a multi-antenna UAV to a set of GBSs within its signal coverage by considering a practical yet challenging scenario when the number of antennas at the UAV is smaller than that of co-channel GBSs. To achieve high-rate transmission yet avoid interfering with any of the existing terrestrial communications at the co-channel GBSs, we propose a novel multi-beam transmission strategy by exploiting the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique. Specifically, the UAV sends each data stream to a selected subset of the GBSs, which can decode the UAV's signals and then cancel them before decoding the messages of their served terrestrial users, and in the meanwhile nulls its interference at the other GBSs via zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming. To draw essential insight, we first characterize in closed-form the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) under the proposed strategy. Then, we propose an efficient algorithm to maximize the UAV's transmit rate subject to the interference avoidance constraints for protecting the terrestrial users.

Supercritical Superprocesses: Proper Normalization and Non-degenerate Strong Limit

Suppose that $X=\{X_t, t\ge 0; \mathbb{P}_μ\}$ is a supercritical superprocess in a locally compact separable metric space $E$. Let $ϕ_0$ be a positive eigenfunction corresponding to the first eigenvalue $λ_0$ of the generator of the mean semigroup of $X$. Then $M_t:=e^{-λ_0t}\langleϕ_0, X_t\rangle$ is a positive martingale. Let $M_\infty$ be the limit of $M_t$. It is known (see, J. Appl. Probab. 46 (2009), 479--496) that $M_\infty$ is non-degenerate iff the $L\log L$ condition is satisfied. In this paper we are mainly interested in the case when the $L\log L$ condition is not satisfied. We prove that, under some conditions, there exist function $γ_t$ on $[0, \infty)$ and a non-degenerate random variable $W$ such that for any finite nonzero Borel measure $μ$ on $E$, $$ \lim_{t\to\infty}γ_t\langle ϕ_0,X_t\rangle =W,\qquad\mbox{a.s.-}\mathbb{P}_μ. $$ We also give the almost sure limit of $γ_t\langle f,X_t\rangle$ for a class of general test functions $f$.

Hot electron heatsinks for microwave attenuators below 100 mK

We demonstrate improvements to the cooling power of broad bandwidth (10 GHz) microwave attenuators designed for operation at temperatures below 100 mK. By interleaving 9-$μ$m thick conducting copper heatsinks in between 10-$μ$m long, 70-nm thick resistive nichrome elements, the electrical heat generated in the nichrome elements is conducted more readily into the heatsinks, effectively decreasing the thermal resistance between the hot electrons and cold phonons. For a 20 dB attenuator mounted at 20 mK, a minimum noise temperature of $T_{n} \sim$ 50 mK was obtained for small dissipated powers ($P_d <$ 1 nW) in the attenuator. For higher dissipated powers we find $T_n \propto P_{d}^{(1/4.4)}$, with $P_{d} =$ 100 nW corresponding to a noise temperature of 90 mK. This is in good agreement with thermal modeling of the system and represents nearly a factor of 20 improvement in cooling power, or a factor of 1.8 reduction in $T_n$ for the same dissipated power, when compared to a previous design without interleaved heatsinks.

Tunable structure and dynamics of active liquid crystals

Active materials are capable of converting free energy into directional motion, giving rise to striking dynamical phenomena. Developing a general understanding of their structure in relation to the underlying non-equilibrium physics would provide a route towards control of their dynamic behavior and pave the way for potential applications. The active system considered here consists of a quasi-two-dimensional sheet of short ($\approx$ 1 $μ$m) actin filaments driven by myosin-II motors. By adopting a concerted theoretical and experimental strategy, new insights are gained into the non-equilibrium properties of active nematics over a wide range of internal activity levels. In particular, it is shown that topological defect interactions can be led to transition from attractive to repulsive as a function of initial defect separation and relative orientation. Furthermore, by examining the +1/2 defect morphology as a function of activity, it is found that the apparent elastic properties of the system (the ratio of bend-to-splay elastic moduli) are altered considerably by increased activity, leading to an effectively lower bend elasticity. At high levels of activity, the topological defects that decorate the material exhibit a liquid-like structure, and adopt preferred orientations depending on their topological charge. Taken together, these results suggest that it should be possible to tune internal stresses in active nematic systems with the goal of designing out-of-equilibrium structures with engineered dynamic responses.

UAV-Enabled Cooperative Jamming for Improving Secrecy of Ground Wiretap Channel

This letter proposes a novel UAV-enabled mobile jamming scheme to improve the secrecy rate of ground wiretap channel. Specifically, a UAV is employed to transmit jamming signals to combat against eavesdropping. Such a mobile jamming scheme is particularly appealing since the UAV-enabled jammer can fly close to the eavesdropper and opportunistically jam it by leveraging the UAV's mobility. We aim to maximize the average secrecy rate by jointly optimizing the UAV's trajectory and jamming power over a given flight period. To make the problem more tractable, we drive a closed-form lower bound for the achievable secrecy rate, based on which the UAV's trajectory and transmit power are optimized alternately by an efficient iterative algorithm applying the block coordinate descent and successive convex optimization techniques. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed joint design can significantly enhance the secrecy rate of the considered wiretap system as compared to benchmark schemes.

Throughput Maximization for UAV-Enabled Wireless Powered Communication Networks

This paper studies an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless powered communication network (WPCN), in which a UAV is dispatched as a mobile access point (AP) to serve a set of ground users periodically. The UAV employs the radio frequency (RF) wireless power transfer (WPT) to charge the users in the downlink, and the users use the harvested RF energy to send independent information to the UAV in the uplink. Unlike the conventional WPCN with fixed APs, the UAV-enabled WPCN can exploit the mobility of the UAV via trajectory design, jointly with the wireless resource allocation optimization, to maximize the system throughput. In particular, we aim to maximize the uplink common (minimum) throughput among all ground users over a finite UAV's flight period, subject to its maximum speed constraint and the users' energy neutrality constraints. The resulted problem is non-convex and thus difficult to be solved optimally. To tackle this challenge, we first consider an ideal case without the UAV's maximum speed constraint, and obtain the optimal solution to the relaxed problem. The optimal solution shows that the UAV should successively hover above a finite number of ground locations for downlink WPT, as well as above each of the ground users for uplink communication. Next, we consider the general problem with the UAV's maximum speed constraint. Based on the above multi-location-hovering solution, we first propose an efficient successive hover-and-fly trajectory design, jointly with the downlink and uplink wireless resource allocation, and then propose a locally optimal solution by applying the techniques of alternating optimization and successive convex programming (SCP). Numerical results show that the proposed UAV-enabled WPCN achieves significant throughput gains over the conventional WPCN with fixed-location AP.

Joint Computation and Communication Cooperation for Energy-Efficient Mobile Edge Computing

This paper proposes a novel user cooperation approach in both computation and communication for mobile edge computing (MEC) systems to improve the energy efficiency for latency-constrained computation. We consider a basic three-node MEC system consisting of a user node, a helper node, and an access point (AP) node attached with an MEC server, in which the user has latency-constrained and computation-intensive tasks to be executed. We consider two different computation offloading models, namely the partial and binary offloading, respectively. Under this setup, we focus on a particular finite time block and develop an efficient four-slot transmission protocol to enable the joint computation and communication cooperation. Besides the local task computing over the whole block, the user can offload some computation tasks to the helper in the first slot, and the helper cooperatively computes these tasks in the remaining time; while in the second and third slots, the helper works as a cooperative relay to help the user offload some other tasks to the AP for remote execution in the fourth slot. For both cases with partial and binary offloading, we jointly optimize the computation and communication resources allocation at both the user and the helper (i.e., the time and transmit power allocations for offloading, and the CPU frequencies for computing), so as to minimize their total energy consumption while satisfying the user's computation latency constraint. Although the two problems are non-convex in general, we propose efficient algorithms to solve them optimally. Numerical results show that the proposed joint computation and communication cooperation approach significantly improves the computation capacity and energy efficiency at the user and helper nodes, as compared to other benchmark schemes without such a joint design.

Overcoming Endurance Issue: UAV-Enabled Communications with Proactive Caching

Wireless communication enabled by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has emerged as an appealing technology for many application scenarios in future wireless systems. However, the limited endurance of UAVs greatly hinders the practical implementation of UAV-enabled communications. To overcome this issue, this paper proposes a novel scheme for UAV-enabled communications by utilizing the promising technique of proactive caching at the users. Specifically, we focus on content-centric communication systems, where a UAV is dispatched to serve a group of ground nodes (GNs) with random and asynchronous requests for files drawn from a given set. With the proposed scheme, at the beginning of each operation period, the UAV pro-actively transmits the files to a subset of selected GNs that cooperatively cache all the files in the set. As a result, when requested, a file can be retrieved by each GN either directly from its local cache or from its nearest neighbor that has cached the file via device-to-device (D2D) communications. It is revealed that there exists a fundamental trade-off between the file caching cost, which is the total time required for the UAV to transmit the files to their designated caching GNs, and the file retrieval cost, which is the average time required for serving one file request. To characterize this trade-off, we formulate an optimization problem to minimize the weighted sum of the two costs, via jointly designing the file caching policy, the UAV trajectory and communication scheduling. As the formulated problem is NP-hard in general, we propose efficient algorithms to find high-quality approximate solutions for it. Numerical results are provided to corroborate our study and show the great potential of proactive caching for overcoming the limited endurance issue in UAV-enabled communications.

Multi-UAV Interference Coordination via Joint Trajectory and Power Control

In this paper, we consider an unmanned aerial vehicle-enabled interference channel (UAV-IC), where each of the $K$ UAVs communicates with its associated ground terminals (GTs) at the same time and over the same spectrum. To exploit the new degree of freedom of UAV mobility for interference coordination between the UAV-GT links, we formulate a joint trajectory and power control (TPC) problem for maximizing the aggregate sum rate of the UAV-IC for a given flight interval, under the practical constraints on the UAV flying speed, altitude, as well as collision avoidance. These constraints couple the TPC variables across different time slots and UAVs, leading to a challenging large-scale and non-convex optimization problem. By exploiting the problem structure, we show that the optimal TPC solution follows the fly-hover-fly strategy, based on which the problem can be handled by firstly finding an optimal hovering locations followed by solving a dimension-reduced TPC problem with given initial and hovering locations of UAVs. For the reduced TPC problem, we propose a successive convex approximation algorithm. To improve the computational efficiency, we further develop a parallel TPC algorithm that is effciently implementable over multi-core CPUs. We also propose a {segment-by-segment method} %virtual waypoint model which decomposes the TPC problem into sequential TPC subproblems each with a smaller problem dimension. Simulation results demonstrate the superior computation time efficiency of the proposed algorithms, and also show that the UAV-IC can yield higher network sum rate than the benchmark orthogonal schemes.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Enhanced Wireless Network: Joint Active and Passive Beamforming Design

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is envisioned to have abundant applications in future wireless networks by smartly reconfiguring the signal propagation for performance enhancement. Specifically, an IRS consists of a large number of low-cost passive elements each reflecting the incident signal with a certain phase shift to collaboratively achieve beamforming and suppress interference at one or more designated receivers. In this paper, we study an IRS-enhanced point-to-point multiple-input single-output (MISO) wireless system where one IRS is deployed to assist in the communication from a multi-antenna access point (AP) to a single-antenna user. As a result, the user simultaneously receives the signal sent directly from the AP as well as that reflected by the IRS. We aim to maximize the total received signal power at the user by jointly optimizing the (active) transmit beamforming at the AP and (passive) reflect beamforming by the phase shifters at the IRS. We first propose a centralized algorithm based on the technique of semidefinite relaxation (SDR) by assuming the global channel state information (CSI) available at the IRS. Since the centralized implementation requires excessive channel estimation and signal exchange overheads, we further propose a low-complexity distributed algorithm where the AP and IRS independently adjust the transmit beamforming and the phase shifts in an alternating manner until the convergence is reached. Simulation results show that significant performance gains can be achieved by the proposed algorithms as compared to benchmark schemes. Moreover, it is verified that the IRS is able to drastically enhance the link quality and/or coverage over the conventional setup without the IRS.

Passively Q-switching cylindrical vector beam fiber laser operating in high-order mode

We experimentally demonstrate a linear-cavity all-fiber passively Q-switching cylindrical vector beam (CVB) laser operating in high-order mode. This CVB fiber laser operates without any mode converter which always leads to high insertion loss, and it can realize high efficiency. In this fiber laser, the stable Q-switching pulse is achieved with a slope efficiency of 39%. By properly adjusting the polarization controllers, radially polarized and azimuthally polarized beams can be obtained. Our work proves the feasibility of achieving the stable Q-switching CVB pulse with high-order mode directly oscillating, and it may have an enormous potential for enhancing the efficiency.
