Strange quark as a probe for new physics in the Higgs sector

This paper describes a novel algorithm for tagging jets originating from the hadronisation of strange quarks (strange-tagging) with the future International Large Detector (ILD) at the International Linear Collider (ILC). It also presents the first application of such a strange-tagger to a Higgs to strange ($h \rightarrow s\bar{s}$) analysis with the $P(e^-,e^+) = (-80\%,+30\%)$ polarisation scenario, corresponding to 900 fb$^{-1}$ of the initial proposed 2000 fb$^{-1}$ of data which will be collected by ILD during its first 10 years of data taking at $\sqrt{s} = 250$ GeV. Upper limits on the Standard Model Higgs-strange coupling strength modifier, $κ_s$, are derived at the 95% confidence level to be 7.14. The paper includes as well a preliminary study of a Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) system capable of discriminating between kaons and pions at high momenta (up to 25 GeV), and thus enhancing strange-tagging performance at future Higgs factory detectors.

Throughput Maximization of UAV Networks

In this paper we study the deployment of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to form a temporal UAV network for the provisioning of emergent communications to affected people in a disaster zone, where each UAV is equipped with a lightweight base station device and thus can act as an aerial base station for users. Unlike most existing studies that assumed that a UAV can serve all users in its communication range, we observe that both computation and communication capabilities of a single lightweight UAV are very limited, due to various constraints on its size, weight, and power supply. Thus, a single UAV can only provide communication services to a limited number of users. We study a novel problem of deploying $K$ UAVs in the top of a disaster area such that the sum of the data rates of users served by the UAVs is maximized, subject to that (i) the number of users served by each UAV is no greater than its service capacity; and (ii) the communication network induced by the $K$ UAVs is connected. We then propose a $\frac{1-1/e}{\lfloor \sqrt{K} \rfloor}$-approximation algorithm for the problem, improving the current best result of the problem by five times (the best approximation ratio so far is $\frac{1-1/e}{5( \sqrt{K} +1)}$), where $e$ is the base of the natural logarithm. We finally evaluate the algorithm performance via simulation experiments. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is very promising. Especially, the solution delivered by the proposed algorithm is up to 12% better than those by existing algorithms.

Livšic theorems for Banach cocycles: existence and regularity

We prove a nonuniformly hyperbolic version Livšic theorem, with cocycles taking values in the group of invertible bounded linear operators on a Banach space. The result holds without the ergodicity assumption of the hyperbolic measure. Moreover, We also prove a $μ$-continuous solution of the cohomological equation is actually Hölder continuous for the uniform hyperbolic system.

Horseshoes and Lyapunov exponents for Banach cocycles over nonuniformly hyperbolic systems

Let $f$ be a $C^r$$(r>1)$ diffeomorphism of a compact Riemannian manifold $M$, preserving an ergodic hyperbolic measure $μ$ with positive entropy, and let $\mathcal{A}$ be a Hölder continuous cocycle of injective bounded linear operators acting on a Banach space $X$. We prove that there is a sequence of horseshoes for $f$ and dominated splittings for $\mathcal{A}$ on the horseshoes, such that not only the measure theoretic entropy of $f$ but also the Lyapunov exponents of $\mathcal{A}$ with respect to $μ$ can be approximated by the topological entropy of $f$ and the Lyapunov exponents of $\mathcal{A}$ on the horseshoes, respectively.

The approximation of Lyapunov exponents by horseshoes for $C^1$-diffeomorphisms with dominated splitting

Let $f$ be a $C^1$-diffeomorphism and $μ$ be a hyperbolic ergodic $f$-invariant Borel probability measure with positive measure-theoretic entropy. Assume that the Oseledec splitting $$T_xM=E_1(x) \oplus\cdots\oplus E_s(x) \oplus E_{s+1}(x) \oplus\cdots\oplus E_l(x) $$ is dominated on the Oseledec basin $Γ$. We give extensions of Katok's Horseshoes construction. Moreover there is a dominated splitting corresponding to Oseledec subspace on horseshoes.

Towards a Framework for Tracking Multiple Targets: Hybrid Systems meets Computational Geometry

We investigate a variation of the art gallery problem in which a team of mobile guards tries to track an unpredictable intruder in a simply-connected polygonal environment. In this work, we use the deployment strategy for diagonal guards originally proposed in [1]. The guards are confined to move along the diagonals of a polygon and the intruder can move freely within the environment. We define critical regions to generate event-triggered strategies for the guards. We design a hybrid automaton based on the critical regions to model the tracking problem. Based on reachability analysis, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for tracking in terms of the maximal controlled invariant set of the hybrid system. We express these conditions in terms of the critical curves to find sufficient conditions for n/4 guards to track the mobile intruder using the reachability analysis.

On the Optimal Policies for Visibility-Based Target Tracking

In this paper, we investigate a pursuit-evasion game in which a mobile observer tries to track a target in an environment containing obstacles. We formulate the game as an optimal control problem with state inequality constraint in a simple environment. We show that for some initial conditions, there are two different regimes in the optimal strategy of the pursuer depending on whether the state-constraint is activated. We derive the equations that characterize the switching time between the two regimes. The pursuer's optimal tracking strategy in a simple environment is further extended to a general environment with multiple polygonal obstacles. We propose techniques to construct a "pursuit field" based on the optimal solutions to guide the motion of the observer in a general environment.

Particle Swarm Optimization Based Source Seeking

Signal source seeking using autonomous vehicles is a complex problem. The complexity increases manifold when signal intensities captured by physical sensors onboard are noisy and unreliable. Added to the fact that signal strength decays with distance, noisy environments make it extremely difficult to describe and model a decay function. This paper addresses our work with seeking maximum signal strength in a continuous electromagnetic signal source with mobile robots, using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). A one to one correspondence with swarm members in a PSO and physical Mobile robots is established and the positions of the robots are iteratively updated as the PSO algorithm proceeds forward. Since physical robots are responsive to swarm position updates, modifications were required to implement the interaction between real robots and the PSO algorithm. The development of modifications necessary to implement PSO on mobile robots, and strategies to adapt to real life environments such as obstacles and collision objects are presented in this paper. Our findings are also validated using experimental testbeds.
