The electroweak magnetic monopole in the presence of KSVZ axion

The Witten effect implies the dynamics of axion and magnetic monopole. The Cho-Maison monopole is a realistic electroweak monopole arisen in the Weinberg-Salam theory. This monopole of TeV scale mass motivates the dedicated search for electroweak monopole at colliders. In this work we investigate the implication of KSVZ axion for the electroweak magnetic monopole. We use the spherically symmetric ansatz for the electroweak dyon and introduce the spherically symmetric function for the axion field. The effective Lagrangian is then shown in terms of the electroweak monopole part, the axion kinetic energy as well as the axion interaction term. We derive the consequent equations of motion in the presence of the axion-photon coupling and show the numerical results of the topological solutions. We then calculate the changed characteristics of the electroweak monopole such as the monopole mass and the electromagnetic charges, as well as the axion potential energy.

Solutions to axion electrodynamics with electric-magnetic duality in supersymmetric Seiberg-Witten theory

Axion and magnetic monopole are among the most fascinating candidates for physics beyond the Standard Model. The potential connection between axion and magnetic monopole stems from the Witten effect and is revealed by non-standard axion electrodynamics. Non-standard axion electrodynamics under electric-magnetic duality modifies conventional axion Maxwell equations and motivates intriguing axion-photon phenomenology. A calculable ultraviolet model of Peccei-Quinn axion coupled to magnetic monopoles and electric charges was proposed based on $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Seiberg-Witten (SW) theory with manifest electric-magnetic duality. In this work, we aim to investigate the solutions to the non-linear axion electrodynamics from SW axion model and propose relevant detection strategies for non-trivial axion-photon couplings. Based on the infrared Lagrangian of SW axion, we derive the electromagetic (EM) equations of motion. We also analyze the moduli space coordinate in SW theory and find out the reliabe parameter space. We then solve the resultant axion Maxwell equations with an external EM field. The observable axion-induced EM fields are obtained analytically and then numerically computed. Finally, we propose the detection strategy with an LC circuit and show the prospective sensitivity to SW axion-photon couplings.

Probing light axion-like particle via primordial black hole evaporation with gamma-ray observations

The axion-like particle (ALP) and primordial black hole (PBH) are two representative dark matter (DM) candidates as light bosonic DM and macroscopic objects, respectively. In this work, we investigate the gamma-ray production mechanisms induced by PBH evaporation and ALP-photon coupling $g_{aγγ}$. The detection of gamma-rays is also explored in future satellite telescopes, including AMEGO, e-ASTROGAM and MAST. We first propose the evaporation-conversion scenario in which light ALPs are emitted by PBHs and are converted into photons in the presence of magnetic field in the Universe. The second scenario assumes ALPs as dominant DM component in the Milky Way and considers the relativistic electron production from PBH evaporation. The emitted electrons scatter off non-relativistic ALP in DM halo and produce gamma-rays through the ALP-photon coupling. Using the Fisher forecasting method, we calculate the gamma-ray energy spectra from these two scenarios and derive projected sensitivity for the fraction of DM composed of PBHs $f_{\rm PBH}$ and ALP-photon coupling $g_{aγγ}$.

Dark Photon Dark Matter in Quantum Electromagnetodynamics and Detection at Haloscope Experiments

The ultralight dark photon is one of intriguing dark matter candidates. The interaction between the visible photon and dark photon is introduced by the gauge kinetic mixing between the field strength tensors of the Abelian gauge groups in the Standard Model and dark sector. The relativistic electrodynamics was generalized to quantum electromagnetodynamics (QEMD) in the presence of both electric and magnetic charges. The photon is described by two four-potentials corresponding to two $U(1)$ gauge groups and satisfying non-trivial commutation relations. In this work, we construct the low-energy dark photon-photon interactions in the framework of QEMD and obtain new dark photon-photon kinetic mixings. The consequent field equations and the new Maxwell's equations are derived in this framework. We also investigate the detection strategies of dark photon as light dark matter as well as the generic kinetic mixings at haloscope experiments.

Sensitivity of two-mode SRF cavity to generic electromagnetism of sub-$μ$eV dark matter

The low-mass dark matter (DM) such as axion or wavelike scalar is a plausible DM candidate. Recently, the possible non-standard couplings of low-mass DM has drawn much attention. In this work we investigate the detection of electromagnetic couplings in a few benchmark models of low-mass DM. For illustration, we consider the generic axion electrodynamics including CP violating coupling as well as the newly proposed axion electromagnetodynamics. The superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavity with two modes has more advantages than the traditional cavity approach with static background field. We utilize the two-mode SRF cavity to probe the generic couplings of low-mass DM with frequency lower than GHz. We show the sensitivity of the SRF cavity to the axion couplings in the above frameworks.

Searching for high-frequency axion in quantum electromagnetodynamics through interface haloscopes

The so-called Witten effect implies the existence of electromagnetic interactions between axion and magnetic monopole due to the axion-photon coupling. A sound quantization in the presence of magnetic monopoles, called quantum electromagnetodynamics (QEMD), was utilized to construct a more generic axion-photon Lagrangian in the low-energy axion effective field theory. This generic axion-photon Lagrangian introduces the interactions between axion and two four-potentials, and leads to new axion-modified Maxwell equations. The interface haloscopes place an interface between two electromagnetic media with different properties and are desirable to search for high-mass axions $m_a\gtrsim \mathcal{O}(10)~μ{\rm eV}$. In this work, for the generic axion-photon couplings built under QEMD, we perform comprehensive calculations of the axion-induced propagating waves and energy flux densities in different interface setups. We also obtain the sensitivity to new axion-photon couplings for high-mass axions.

Quantum calculation of axion-photon transition in electromagnetodynamics for cavity haloscope

The Witten effect implies the presence of electric charge of magnetic monople and possible relationship between axion and dyon. The axion-dyon dynamics can be reliably built based on the quantum electromagnetodynamics (QEMD) which was developed by Schwinger and Zwanziger in 1960's. A generic low-energy axion-photon effective field theory can also be realized in the language of ``generalized symmetries'' with higher-form symmetries and background gauge fields. In this work, we implement the quantum calculation of axion-single photon transition rate inside a homogeneous electromagnetic field in terms of the new axion interaction Hamiltonian in QEMD. This quantum calculation can clearly imply the enhancement of conversion rate through resonant cavity in axion haloscope experiments. We also show the promising potentials on the cavity search of new axion-photon couplings in QEMD.

Solutions to axion electromagnetodynamics and new search strategies of sub-$μ$eV axion

The Witten effect implies the electromagnetic interactions between axions and magnetic monopoles. Based on the quantum electromagnetodynamics, a generic low-energy axion-photon effective field theory was built by introducing two four-potentials ($A^μ$ and $B^μ$) to describe a photon. More anomalous axion-photon interactions and couplings ($g_{aAA}$, $g_{aBB}$ and $g_{aAB}$) arise in contrary to the ordinary axion coupling $g_{aγγ}aF^{μν}\tilde{F}_{μν}$. As a consequence, the conventional axion Maxwell equations are further modified. We properly solve the new axion-modified Maxwell equations and obtain the axion-induced electromagnetic fields given a static electric or magnetic field. It turns out that the dominant couplings $g_{aAB}$ and $g_{aBB}$ can be probed in the presence of external magnetic field and electric field, respectively. The induced oscillating magnetic fields are always suppressed compared with the electric fields for the axions with large Compton wavelengths. This is contrary to the situation in conventional experiments searching for the oscillating magnetic fields induced by sub-$μ$eV axions. Thus, we propose new strategies to measure the new couplings for sub-$μ$eV axion in haloscope experiments.

Axion-like particles from primordial black hole evaporation and their detection in neutrino experiments

The primordial black holes (PBHs) play as a novel source to radiate light elementary particles of energies in the region of a few hundred MeV. We explore the possibility that the axion-like particles (ALPs) with mass less than 1 MeV are produced from PBH evaporation. The absorption of light ALPs in the underground detector targets then induces energetic photoelectron signatures in current and future neutrino experiments. Utilizing the PBH ALP event rate, we place general exclusion limits on the axion couplings at Super-K and Hyper-K. We also translate these limits into the upper bound on the fraction of DM composed of PBHs $f_{\rm PBH}$.

Dark magnetic dipole property in fermionic absorption by nucleus and electrons

The fermionic dark matter (DM) absorption by nucleus or electron targets provides a distinctive signal to search for sub-GeV DM. We consider a Dirac fermion DM charged under a dark gauge group and with the dark magnetic dipole operator. The DM field mixes with right-handed neutrino and interacts with the ordinary electromagnetic charge current via the kinetic mixing term of gauge fields. As a result, the incoming DM is absorbed and converted into neutrino in final state through the dipole-charge interaction. For the DM absorption by nucleus, the recoil energy spectrum exhibit a peak at $m_χ^2/2m_N$ for each isotope in the target. XENON1T can probe the DM mass above 27 MeV and the projected constraint on the inelastic DM-nucleon cross section becomes $10^{-49}$ cm$^2$. CRESSTIII with lower energy threshold would be sensitive to the DM mass above 2 MeV. We also check that the contribution from the nuclear magnetic dipole is negligible for $^{131}{\rm Xe}$ target. The absorption of DM by bound electron target induces ionization signal and is sensitive to sub-MeV DM mass. The involvement of the ionization form factor spreads out the localized recoil energy. We show the future prospect for the constraint on the magnetic dipole coupling from the electron ionization of $^{131}{\rm Xe}$.

The implication of $J/ψ\to (γ+ ){\rm invisible}$ for the effective field theories of neutrino and dark matter

We study the implication of $J/ψ$ decay into invisible particles for light sterile neutrino and sub-GeV dark matter (DM). The low-energy effective field theories (EFTs) are used for the description of general neutrino interactions and the Dirac fermion DM coupled to charm quark. For $J/ψ\to γ+{\rm invisible}$, we perform the likelihood fits for the individual neutrino and DM operators with distinct Lorentz structures and photon spectra. The limits on the decay branching fractions are obtained for different neutrino or DM scenarios and then converted to the lower bounds on the new energy scales. The most stringent bounds on the energy scale in neutrino and DM EFTs are 12.8 GeV and 11.6 GeV, respectively. The purely invisible decay $J/ψ\to {\rm invisible}$ provides complementary constraints on the effective operators. The relevant bound on the energy scale is above 100 GeV for the dipole operators. We also evaluate the limit on the DM-nucleon scattering cross section converted from $J/ψ$ data. The data of $J/ψ$ invisible decays are sensitive to the light DM mass range where the DM direct detection experiments cannot probe yet. The future Super Tau Charm Factory after one year run can push the limits down by two orders of magnitude.
